- Ong (7/5): - Good Supply towel onsen
- francesca (9/5): Marvelous view on the lake - The open-air onsen on the wooden terrace was really nice. The private onsen too was really comfortable (you will have to pay separately for this).
The staff was really helpful and kind.
The room big, with a majestic view on the lake and really comfortable beds. I think this was not the right season to enjoy the really old open-air onsen that is at the level of the lake water. The water level was extremely low (maybe 40-50 cm high) so it is probably better to go in winter when the water height can reach 140 cm.
Considering the overall service I don't really want to complain too much but the room price is quite high. It would be nice if they could offer an option without meals for the one who want to pay a little less.

The lake Communication a bit complicated. Nobody speaks English
- Alice (9/5): - Very special views, great food and tranquility. The rooms are older but give a sense of authenticity I liked.
- Adam (10/5): Amazing location and views. Great food and service. Phenomenal onsens right on the lake. - Amazing location and views. Great food and service. Phenomenal onsens right on the lake.

- Michael (5/5): Beautiful location and natural onsen, but room could be upgraded. - The location is ideal. Next to a lovely lake.
The onsen was rustic and natural.
But disappointed with the room. Very basic. And the deco was dated. disappointed with the room. Very basic. And the deco was dated.
- Jackie (8/5): It’s a wonderful destination for those seeking serenity, nature, and a traditional onsen escape. - Perfect for anyone looking to disconnect from the busy pace of city life. Nestled away from Sapporo and surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, the location is its greatest strength. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with the soothing onsen experience, made it incredibly easy to relax and unwind.
Another highlight was the shuttle bus service, which really eased the journey for those who don’t drive. It made accessing this secluded location much more convenient and stress-free. The tea-time refreshments. While the offerings were pleasant, a wider variety of snacks and drinks would have enhanced the overall experience and made it feel a bit more special.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Just a night here, lovely room, such comfortable beds, fine breakfast and nice yanaka robes! - Lakeside location beautiful. Interesting history.

- Rachel (10/5): I had a very nice time and everyone was very helpful - Staff were very friendly and helpful. Clean facilities and taken care of. Nothing
- Klavs (9/5): Idyllisk onsen - We had a wonderful time!
- Carolyn (10/5): Gorgeous location and a wonderful stay. I would come back in a heartbeat! - Beautifully located lakeside with gorgeous mountain views. The outdoor baths are the stars of the show with full views across the lake for sunrise.
Breakfast buffet was a good selection of traditional Japanese with enough options also for Western tastes.
Be sure to get a lake view room - it is worth it. We do the kaiseki dinner both nites - while it was good, I'm not sure I'd order it again for the price.
- Philip (10/5): We had a most enjoyable stay in a beautiful location with lovely Onsens and Kaiseki meals. - This is in a lovely location, right on the lake. It’s beautiful! The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a room overlooking the lake, which is a must. We enjoyed the Onsens and also the Kaiseki meals in both nights. Please note the photos of the Onsens were during a closed period when photos were permitted. The basin was in need of repair and didn’t drain properly.
- Chelsea (8/5): Excellent! Would definitely return! - Amazing breakfast and dinner! Room doesn’t have own shower
- Kuan Yin (10/5): -
- Pernilla (9/5): Fantastic value - Beautiful views, onsen and friendly staff. We also enjoyed the dinner and breakfast.

- Hoshang (9/5): Great onsen stay in a pristine quiet corner on Lake Shikotsu! - Marukoma Onsen Ryokan delivers 100% on comfort, great lakeside location (pristine, peaceful, quiet), cleanliness, and superb food (esp our daily kaiseki dinners which I highly recommend to book with your stay). You will need transport / rental car to get to this location, and the final stretch of road is challenging (esp in winter / snow) but once you are there then it is your oasis!
The onsen with the hot springs bath were great, if you want less crowds and more peace then I suggest to visit outside the "day trip" hours as the onsen remains open late until 11pm (11am to 3pm is when a lot of visitors flock to this onsen by buying a day pass at Yen1200 per day). The rooms were nice, spacious, and clean and our lake front view room on the 3rd floor has beautiful lake views (room is basic though without much amenities or furnishing - beds were a comfy mattress on the ground futon style).
The kaiseki dinner we had included with our reservation was delicious, well curated and lots of nice premium ingredients that you would not usually get to savor in a regular meal option. Breakfast was average, but well stocked with options for all (Incl Japanese and western items). Staff were always super responsive, warm & mostly friendly! The rooms only come with a private toilet and no bathroom / shower area - you will need to do down to the onsen for a shower every day and this we felt was a bit of a downside (on the day of the checkout, make sure you shower down in the onsen before you checkout!). We've stayed in a few onsen type of hotels in Japan, and a missing shower/bathroom area is the first time we encountered this situation (not a biggie if you plan things well ahead - so this is good to know!).
Breakfast starts early at 7am and ends at 9am - we feel it could be more relaxing for guests if they were to extend by one more hour and serve breakfast until 10am. Also there is no option for lunch at the hotel restaurant - so plan to either go out somewhere into lake shikotsu town for lunch or skip lunch and do an early dinner.
Some tea / coffee in the room would be nice to provide as its not convenient to step down each time. And they do have a hard 10am checkout policy, we requested a slightly late checkout to 11am but it was rejected instantly without the person at the reception even trying or looking into the possibility.

- Wahl (10/5): This was the last stop on our honeymoon and it was perfect. - The food was excellent, with breakfast served in a grand room with a view of the lake and a fantastic Kaiseki dinner served on a private hearth. My wife and I were blown away. The onsen and hot spring water is very special and the location is unmatched. Nothing
- David (10/5): Tranquil, traditional relaxation at its finest - Absolutely gorgeous location, and the dinner was incredibly delicious, an entire experience. Not many negatives.
- Ka Yee Katherine (9/5):

- Kath (10/5): We loved our stay, it was magical. We soaked in the outdoor onsen while it was snowing on us. One of those moments in tr - Everything! Nothing at all

- Wei Nien (10/5):

The menu is very diverse and traditional. Truly and experience.

- Lim (9/5): A Truly Unique Stay at Historic Ryokan by the Lake! - Located in a cosy quiet spot in nature literally on the edge of Lake Shikotsu. Fine varied dinners over 3 nights & good choice of breakfast options (including sunny-side up eggs!), it’s great value for money. Superb onsens & rooms facing the rising sun over the lake. A longer walk for the ladies to the ryokan’s very unique onsens built into the lake-side of Shikotsu but well worth the effort!
- Tzufu (10/5): -

- Rachel (9/5): Beautiful secluded location for a traditional onsen experience. - Beautiful secluded lakeside location, medium sized hotel (no large tour groups) with lovely indoor and outdoor onsen pools, excellent abundant food. No shower in room - a western expectation and the communal baths were excellent. Otherwise nothing not to like.
- Christopher Chen (9/5): Best way to start a trip to Hokkaido - Exceptional location. Exquisite open air onsen. Friendly helpful staff Musty room
- wendy (9/5): Excellent service and amenities. - Staff was excellent, Beds were very comfy, Food was delicious and variedand location was top notch. We had a terrible first night because a group of young people were partying all night next to us. Unbelievable behavior in an Onsen. We talked to the hotel and they came up to ask them to be quiet and they left. The partying and noise did not stop until 3:10am. When I went to talk to the hotel the next day, the person in charge was extraordinarily kind and helpful. We slept solid the whole next night thanks to his arranging some buffer room for us. It was so kind of him and we were really grateful. Walls are quite thin.
- Katja (8/5): Location, location, location - The location is absolutely fantastic. There is a spacious common area where breakfast is served with a view of the lake. The onsen with its scenic view is a truly memorable experience. The staff was not as friendly as I experienced in Japan at other places, and the dinner was fine but not great.
