Guest Reviews
- David (5/5): -
- Brenda (1/5): It was terrible.I want ever stay again🥵 - Nothing Never seen a staff the room was terrible no bathroom supplies like toilet paper a few Kleenex.I want to dispute the charge.
- Nicholas (1/5): I never stayed there. I was shut out upon arrival and was fortunate to find another property in town - Booking.com sent me a confirmation saying that check-in was from 3PM to 9PM. When I arrived at 8:35PM the office was locked and the sign said they close at 8PM. I called the number and got a recording telling me to call back during business hours. I was very fortunate to be able to book another property. Chama, NM is a tiny town. The hotel went ahead and charged me. I called Booking.com and explained the situation and was told they should be able to refund me. About a week later I got an email saying there was nothing they could do about the charges. fortunately I had booked with VISA and my bank refunded my money. Booking.com and/or the hotel need to get their act together and provide accurate information to your guests. Stranding a customer at night like that is unacceptable . I was told by numerous people in town and at the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway that the place I stayed was vastly superior the the Branding Iron anyway. You need to provide guests with accurate hours for checking in or out.
- Robert (8/5): Only there two nights but the place is nice and convenient and quiet so i would recommend it. - Took the train ride so the location was very good. No breakfast is offered so we ate at the place down the road. Staff is friendly and helpful, beds were comfortable. Breakfast would be nice, but the competition does not offer either. Under the circumstances i probably wouldn't either if i owned the place. Chama goes into hibernation when the train shuts down for the year so the owners need to get every dollar they can while they can.
- Kevin (8/5): -
- Anne (9/5): - Spacious room, quiet location AND close to train
- Robert (4/5): Would like a refund for the second night which we did not stay. - We had to cancel our second night due to issues with the property, which did not meet our expectations. Location,
- James (9/5): -
- Peter (3/5): Property run down lacking care, not again - Location is reasonably convenient; not busy (hint!) Not much - very dated, smoking in the Room machine not working, bathroom extractor from 1950s
- Debbie (7/5): -
- David (8/5): - More amenities.
- Rick (8/5): -
- Gabriela (7/5): -
- Carlos (8/5): Clean quiet place just very old facility - Quite
- George (2/5): Would have stayed elsewhere but I found out too late. - Breakfast not included Checked into the room and found it had no soap. I was given only two very small bars of soap. Also the only toilet paper was on the roll with no extra rolls anywhere. Had to go to the office for a roll of TP and was given only one roll with no apologies from the office.
- Pamela (1/5): Don't stay there -- dirty and old - this place is old, out of date and run down
- Susan (5/5): Train room for a night. - Location near the Cumbres & Toltec train in Chama The WiFi and TV didn't work. Half the electric plugs turned off/didn't work. The bed was old and lumpy. The office shuts down by 8pm and doesn't open again until 8 am. No hair dryer in room.
- Lawrence (7/5): - Simply room No refrigerator
Upstairs out of 30 vacant rooms
- Cathy (1/5): I won't be using or recommending booking.com or priceline to anyone. - The property was shabby at best. The office manager impolite. The problem was more with booking . com. I was booked for two rooms instead of one. I made a reservation before my trip but never received an email confirmation. The next day I tried again and the reservation went through, and I received an email confirmation. When I showed up at the motel, they said booking.com sent them two reservations and made me pay for both. I called booking.dot com and for an hour was on the phone trying to work this unfair charge out. Booking.com said it was my fault and wouldn't work with me in any way.
- Marc (10/5): - Check-in was fast and pricing was accurate, friendly desk clerk, the room was VERY well cleaned and quiet. Convenient to C&TRR.
- Walter (3/5): Not recommended at all unless nothing else is available. - Convenient location Facilities seriously outdated. Need to hang sign on doorknob to get maid service. Got poor maid service next day as room was not cleaned and only replaced toilet tissue roll and emptied trash can. Floor and lavatory was not even touched by maid. Large facility but very few customers on a supposedly busy weekend tells the story.
- Jerry (10/5): - Nice place
- adolphus d (8/5): - Convenient
- Ronald (4/5): - There was no refri or microwave. The room was ok but the amenities were lacking
- Billy (8/5): Two Night Stay - Our two nights stay left a lot to be desired. Evidently this motel only has two queen bedrooms, others are two single beds. Our queen bed was not very comfortable for two people, and they do not offer king beds although the room is plenty big to accommodate. No microwave, no refrigerator, and the ice machine did not work. A repair man did show up and had it working again by 6 PM or last night, but ice wasn’t ready until midnight. It is a very small town and not a lot of choices so that must be taken into consideration when visiting Chama.
- SAMMY (10/5): Nice and clean! - Nice and clean room. Quiet area. Good service. I’ve stayed here three years in a row on my Colorado vacation.
- Curt (6/5): - Given the area, it was about what you would expect. Chama pretty much closes up Sunday thru Tuesday during non-elk season
- Cindy (8/5): - The room was clean and the staff was friendly.
- ANDREW (10/5): - Beautiful cozy rooms
- Maria (6/5): - There was no elevator to the second story. Room was just okay. No hairdryer. Restaurant was closed.
- Thomas (8/5): - A simple place to stay in a simple town.
- Norma (10/5): Wow - What a Gem! - We had never been to New Mexico before and love taking the scenic side roads instead of the highways, which led us to this gem. We arrived during a torrential rainstorm, but Tanya went above and beyond to help us get settled in. She even made sure we had a ground-floor room for our dog, which was so appreciated.
Though the rain kept us in for the evening, the next morning brought sunshine and the chance to explore this charming town. The people here are incredibly friendly, and the whole experience felt warm and welcoming from start to finish.
If you're passing through—especially if you're taking the backroads—definitely stay here!
- Peter (6/5): Pleasant - 3 Nights - no room cleaning
- Mel (9/5): Superb - Place was very quiet, clean and was centered to everything. Heater worked good went temperature dropped after hail storm. TV reception was bad. wish the restaurant was open but we had other options that were close by.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean, roomy and comfortable.
- Leslie (8/5): - They just need to let customers know that check-in is at
4 rather than 3 as it says on their web site.
- william (2/5): - This is a low budge motel in a nice area
- Katherine (8/5): - Simple, clean not bad for a quick over night
- Preston (10/5): Small town station town - Clean basic hotel in very small town at the terminus of the Cumbress & Toltec RR. Close to RR station.
- Kelly (6/5): - Clean. But lightbulb burnt out over bathroom sink, no blow dryer, guests smoking pot right outside of room two doors down.
- Patrick (6/5): Pleasant -
- karen (8/5): - Quiet, convenient
- Israel (4/5): Disappointing -
- Julie (10/5): - Overall very clean and nice place. Wish in future they would have refrigerator and microwave in the room.
- Tad (6/5): Pleasant - No breakfast Rather expensive for a very simple room and accommodations
- Greg (4/5): - The place is a dump.
- Richard (5/5): Good for a night. A little over priced for the night. - Good location, bad tv selections. Overall good. Needs updating like almost every hotel in Chama. Needs updating and better TV reception and channel choices.
- Stephen (4/5): Disappointing -
- Darlene (8/5): Would not hesitate to stay there again if I were going to take the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad again - No breakfast but several small places to have coffee and breakfast items. The location was superb for such a small town. We walked to The Outlaw Restaurant for dinner. Great food (New Mexican), large portions, really nice music from a fellow who had a nice voice and played very well. Loud enough to hear but not overwhelming. We'd go back to Chama just to hear him. I think he plays on the weekends. Back to the motel--Clean as a whistle and quiet. We were on the ground floor. Saw deer bounding in the meadow. What more could you ask for. No breakfast available but they did have a coffee service in each room.
- Jack (8/5): Better than I expected by other reviews - Location, clean, toilet ,sink and bathtub all drained as they should (some higher rated motels don’t) Overnight stay ,room should have been refreshed.(coffee, towels weren’t restocked)
- Larry (4/5): - Depressing, dreary, dingy old-style motel. On the plus side, it has new sink and toilet. Apparently, nothing better in the poor little town of Chama.
- Mike (8/5): Very good -
- Joe (6/5): - This is an older motel, but it is kept up well. We posted a sign to have maid service after the first night, but it was not done. As expensive as the rates are for this motel, you can find better choices in the area.
- CHRISTINA (2/5): - When we booked the property, the check in time listed was 3pm on the Travelocity website, which is why I booked here because we had a wedding to attend at 4. No rooms we clean but we were given a key. We asked if we could just get ready somewhere and they were not helpful with that. I went up to see where our room was and to check if it was ready since we were given a key and a woman started screaming at me that we are not allowed in the rooms until 4. She preceded to yell at me across the property. So I went back to the office to cancel our stay. The front desk worker went to get the manager and turns out that’s who was yelling at me across the property. I could not believe how unprofessional the manager was. We left and did not stay here. I will be disputing the charges on my credit card.
- Ann (2/5): - no blankets, no fan that worrked well
- Doris (5/5): Passable - Hospitality was good Booking.com over charged me
- Jared (10/5): - Tonya was awesome she was very accommodateing
- Rita (6/5): - No Wifi, no refrigerator
- Wentzel (9/5): Superb -
- Clokey (5/5): Barely acceptable. - Facility needs to be upgraded. Outside building needs painting.
- Mary Margaret (8/5): - It was quiet, clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Icemaker waiting for replacement. Nightlight for bathroom would have been nice.
- Rachael (4/5): adequate barely - Price point cheaper that others in the town of Chama room had new carpet but bathroom had black hair stuck to the walls ( not mine) Overall the building was very shabby on the outside and ice machine downstairs wasnt working. NO mini fridge or microwave in room Trash cans in parking lot hadnt been emptied in a while. The hotel front desk told me they were a seasonal motel only open when the train is running and had to close all other rooms as their housekeeping staff had not showed up for work that day
- Patricia (2/5): - only 3 rooms. in entire complex occupied. were not allowed to transfer to a ground floor room. no ice machine. restaurant was closed. NO room cleaning, linens etc between nights of stay, Many other superior properties in the area. Expedia should not offer this as an option.
- Tracey (6/5): - Property over all was nice and the staff was very nice as well. Beds were harder than I like. Not anywhere in the room to plug in a charger for phones without unplugging something else. Even had to unplug the clock to use the coffeemaker.
- Robert (10/5): Very comfy bed staff was very nice - Staff was very nice and it was quite
- Stephen (10/5): - Best place in town. Clean convenient friendly, fully functional. Not a 5 star hotel but it’s not a 5 star town.
- Charles (2/5): - Checked in. No Vacancy sign but no patrons? TV was terrible--few channels and most were unviewable.. Advised clerk who stated it hoped to be fixed the next week. No microwave or fridge. Room was not made up for second day. Restaurant was closed. No discount for all this! We were the only patrons for two days.
- Gary (8/5): - It was ok. It was an older place. It was one of the more reasonably priced motels in the area.
- Janice (8/5): Successful trip, had what we needed for a comfortable nights sleep. - Location surroundings were beautiful. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The front desk staff was friendly and above and beyond helpful. our own fault didn't notice the hotel didn't have a microwave or mini refrigerator which we needed and had expected. Staff loaned us a microwave and made do with cooler we had. The hotel is older and open seasonal, could use some updating and a few more extras for the price. The wi-fi was fair but the tv was sorry. Ice Machine not working for the 6 days we were there. There for my husbands hunting trip so I was in the room most of the time and basically had everything I needed just a little more rustic then I liked. Staff was super accommodating and helped any way they could.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The accommodations were adequate, but the room rate was way over priced. No, microwave or mini refrigerator and no staff on site at night for emergencies. There was an elderly couple that was accidentally locked out of their room and could not get a hold of anyone.
- Paul (3/5): Noisy rundown and overpriced - Location is good for Chama train Noisy rundown and overpriced
- dennis (2/5): - Run down hotel.
- Ray (3/5): Ghost motel in need of repair - Good location in Chama for doing the train ride. Room was roomy with only one double bed. It was ok but kind of shabby. Would not stay there again. Property was run down, half the rooms were out of service. Restaurant was closed long ago. Room doors were left open. Fire alarm went off several times - fire department came. Office manager often wasn’t around. Strange people roamed through the motel. Only about 4 rooms were occupied one night and only 2 the next night. Clearly the management had decided to stop maintaining the motel several years ago. Not sure why they were even renting out the remaining rooms.
- Richard (8/5): Quiet restful stress free,very Clean - Clean,friendly staff,comfortable!
- Jerry (5/5): This motel needs major facelift. - No amenities. Bath/ shower Luke warm at best. Price for room same as other much better lodging in the area. Was the last room available in Chama, NM or I would have gone elsewhere.
- Domonique (8/5): Very good -
- Domonique (8/5): Very good -
- Domonique (8/5): Very good -
- Schmudde (7/5): Good - Location good. The motel's ice maker was broken, so we had to buy ice at a grocery store. On our first night, there were no external lights on, so the parking lot and stairways were dark.
- LYNN (4/5): - The property needs to be updated to accommodate senior citizens. The bathroom facilities are not up to 20th, let alone 21st century standars.
- Marcos (9/5): It was good. Few hotels/motels get excellent ratings. - There wasn’t a breakfast. The location was good. Close to the train ride.
- Bill (5/5): Passable - Room was clean No microwave, no refrigerator, no hair dryer, no deadbolt or extra door lock. Still using keys for rooms. No keycards.
- Harry (8/5): Very good -
- Natasha (8/5): Older but not bad overall - The motel was serviceable. We didn't spend a lot of time there as we got in late and left early for the train. We drove in about 8:30pm so the front desk was closed for the night and our key was left in an envelope in a drop box. Overall, the housekeepers do an excellent job at keeping things clean and tidy but there were a few issues that were beyond them. There were some mold spots on the ceiling above the shower and our bathroom light wasn't working either so we had to use our phone flashlights to see. The motel feels like an old place and is a bit outdated, but I think, overall, it is in pretty decent condition and a quiet and peaceful spot. It has a convenient location where everything is just a couple minutes' drive. I wouldn't mind staying there again.
- Timothy (6/5): Pleasant -
- Charles (6/5): - Although the room was large and the property is convenient to town, there was no refrigerator, no hair dryer, and most aggravating, the bottom "fitted" sheet on the bed would not stay on the mattress.
- Wayne (7/5): Good -
- Odin (8/5): Comfortable. - Wonderful greeting and service. We were disappointed that room did not have a microwave and refrigerator, but the fault is ours for not checking when reserving. A great area for dog walking.
- Kathleen (8/5): - We had to leave early before sunrise so a porch light we could turn on would have been useful. We very much liked having no lights on after 10 pm though! Esp with the potential bear situation. But great stay.
- Sherry (5/5): We will not stay here again. - No breakfast available. Ice machine was broken. Maid service - we put out the maid service needed sign twice and there was not any service. No microwave or mini refrigerator. Old facility and needs upgrading.
- Linda (2/5): Never again - Horrible. Bed was terrible. No ice. Charged my card 5 times!!
- Wesley (1/5): Bad - This property double charged my credit card and has so far refused to remove the charge plus the rooms overpiced!
- Keith (6/5): - Needs major updating. No dining, no refrigerator or microwave.
- Bruce (5/5): Passable - Location near the center of Chama and near the Cumbres and Toltec Railway. It was quiet and staff were friendly. It is an old hotel that has seen much better days. There have been some improvements.
- Alan (5/5): The train experience was wonderful, but Chama needs to try harder at hospitality to tourists. - Not far from restaurants, train etc. Room was decent. Furniture was very dated, room was not inviting. Exterior Lighting at poor especially the hotel sign at night. You could not see it. Only the "vacancy" sign was lit snd even that was not bright. Coming back from dinner,we had a hard time ginding our way back to the hotel due to no lit sign.
TV only had a few channels. The restaurant was not in operation. I had expected better for the price I was quoted.
- Roger (8/5): Good place for the train ride in - Large comfortable clean rooms A little light on places to eat the ones. Open at the time were busy
- Aguirre (9/5): Superb - Did not have breakfast restaurant was closed. location was fine for my visit. Couldn't find ice machine.
- Michael (7/5): Utilitarian - Location Bed could have been more comfortable
- Reed (8/5): - The room was very clean and quiet but the ice machine was not functioning, the wifi was sub par, and there was no USB charging in the room.
- Jennifer (5/5): OK in a pinch - It’s what you’d expect for a roadside motel. The good news is it’s clean. Overpriced. But I guess you can get away with price gauging when there are limited vacancies in town. What a headache dealing with payment. They had a “problem” with the credit card machine and charged me about 8 times. I’m still waiting for all the credits to come through so that I’m only charged the right amount, once!
