Guest Reviews
- Sheila (10/5): - Nice staff good parking area.
- Michael (2/5): - Dirty dusty and cobwebs
Stool collapsed and cut my leg
- Derek (6/5): Nice place to stay - Friendly and helpful at front desk. The handle on the bathroom door was loose so couldn’t close it fully to use the loo.
Could do with something on at night.
- Natalie (8/5): - Bed very comfortable. Room got hot. Didn’t feel comfortable leaving window open over night due to fire escape right outside the window and being a lone female.
- Darren (10/5): - Nice hotel with great staff beautiful gardens and excellent spa
- Sue (10/5): - Good Service accommodation and food
- Linda (8/5): - Lovely stay. Nice staff, some areas a little tired, however it didnt put us off staying as we felt welcomed, and would not hesitate to stay again should we be in the area. Good food. Comfortable bed.
- C (8/5): - Everything was as expected
- Bernard (10/5): Eyesight checked - Excellent food. Wonderful staff. Could have done with handrails in the shower
- Jayne (10/5): - Great hotel just off A66 not far from Barnard Castle. Great spot to break our journey between Falkirk and Cambridge Food very good.
- Chris (10/5): Great hotel and location - Check in was very easy, staff were very friendly and helpful, room was lovely , larger than expected with 4 poster bed. Great hotel in great location. Bar area was very nice with painted mural walls.
Only minor negative comment would be that the paint work i.e. doors and skirting was looking very tired, could do with a refresh.
- Aimee (8/5): Overnight stay - Good hotel in a lovely area. Very pretty gardens. Food was great in the restaurant. Our room was large and comfortable but a little tired in places.
- Catherine (10/5): Clean and comfortable - Friendly efficient staff. Clean room. Comfortable bed with clean linen. Clean bathroom. Good food.
Would definitely stay again
- Barry (10/5): - Old world charm but very tidy and clean.
Staff provided excellent assistance, very friendly and shared knowledge of local attractions.
Two wonderful nights …. thank you.
- Stephen (10/5): - Nice traditional country hotel, lovely staff
- Jonathan (10/5): - Excellent stay
- Paul (2/5): Avoid room 20, pre cooked breakfast, cold hotel - Cold downstairs, main door left open & bar/garden door left open, breakfast all pre-cooked except the egg, small cold buffet selection, twin beds pushed together in room 20 fall into the mattress, mould on walks, iron burn on carpet, walls stained,
- Jade (4/5): Disappointed - Food was lovely and staff serving were helpful. The heating was on in my room full blast in a really warm day when I first went in, was too scared to leave the window open as I was level with the roof and there was a lot of birds. Room was average, pretty small. Unfortunately i attempted to call reception 3 times between 11pm-midnight to ask when the music would be turned off, it was turned off at midnight but then the music was back on again at 6.30am. I’m guessing my room was right above the speakers in the restaurant which was unfortunate. Just overall a very noisy hotel with old floor boards and other guests shouting good night to each other down the hall.
- Elizabeth (4/5): Paper thin walls - prepare for no sleep. - Unfortunately I had virtually no sleep at the hotel as it was so noisy. The walls are paper thin, so you can hear everything from the room above too. Added to which the bathroom was in a "cupboard" so accessing it was ridiculously awkward. At 5am we gave up, drove home and went to bed.
- Alastair (10/5): - No served its purpose. The staff were so helpful and pleasant.
- Laura (4/5): - The room was fine, old fashioned but worked for us to lay our head when we got back. We had an issue with keys (we accidentally left it in the room as we left and didn’t realise, so this then involved them trying about 100 keys in the lock to get in and then waking up the owner of the hotel and us being told “a very angry man is going to come in a minute to sort this out”, which made me feel very uncomfortable. it took almost an hour to sort out, which was a nightmare, and once we finally got to bed, we could hear the goings on in the next room until the very early hours of the next morning so barely slept. I probably wouldn’t stay again!
- neil (10/5): - Lovely quiet place and great food .
- Robert (8/5): - Comfortable relaxed hotel with good food
- Elizabeth (8/5): - Love this hotel for a halfway stop whilst driving up to Scotland.
- Johanna (10/5): - I had an economy room at an amazing low price and it is in a property immediately next to the hotel. The room is really nice and the bed is very comfortable.
- Yasmin (4/5): - It was ok , had to ask for clean cups as room not done second day, first room that we were checked into was not made up so they moved us to another room.
- Gervis (10/5): - Fantastic location and very scenic and peaceful. There is plenty to do within driving distance, 10 mins or so and the food at the hotel was very good and reasonable priced. The spa is a must it’s a great addition to your stay and very relaxing and well worth the money. Highly recommended
- Michael (8/5): - The history of the building.
- John (6/5): Poor service but comfortable. - Very poor breakfast service. And bar service in evening. Room was very comfortable but overall the hotel looked a little tired.
- Stephen (2/5): - Beds were so uncomfortable that we did not sleep at all both nights, mattresses should have been replaced years ago
- Tom (10/5): - Beautiful place. Very good value. Will return.
- Darren (4/5): - Dated and tired, rooms are poorly decorated, back rooms have the kitchen extractor running from 6 till 11
- Katie (8/5): - Very good stay - friendly staff, good breakfast and comfortable room. Only let down was that the curtains are very thin so the room was very bright at night and early morning. Ended up hanging blankets over the windows to try and block out light.
- Michelle (8/5): Lovely quaint hotel In a quiet location - The hotel is gorgeous and the staff are amazing. So friendly and genuinely want to help you and make you feel welcome. The surroundings are lovely and Barnard Castle is down the road with some lovely views, walks and a couple of coffee shops.
The room was cute. We booked a deluxe and it was like a little apartment.
Breakfast is lovely.
The food in the bar was lovely but a bit pricey for what it is.
Overall a lovely, pleasant stay 😊
- Christine (4/5): Bad first impression - Our room was small and stuffy, with the windows open the smell of cooking from the kitchen below wasunpleasant. We asked for a fan which helped. The friends we travelled with has a much bigger room without the smells. The setting is lovely and we enjoyed the gardens. The second breakfast was a disaster: there was no bread, they ran out of yogurts and fruit. A request for marmalade was ignored until Erin was asked and she knew where the jar was in the kitchen. Louise was very sympathetic and cancelled the previous bad impression by reserving us a table that didn't wobble with marmalade already on the table. She was friendly and helpful and went out of her way to make us comfortable.
- William (10/5): - The staff went out of their way to accomodate us, they were very friendly & the grounds were well looked after, making for a peaceful atmosphere. Thank you
- Phillip (8/5): - Value for money, but silly things let hotel down sometimes.
- Stephen (8/5): Value for money - Good value for money. I think the hotel itself would admit that it isn't a luxury venue but for £55 for the room it was clean and comfortable and I slept well. The decor needs updating. Staff were great and very friendly. Food was excellent. I highly recommend the restaurant. I would stay again.
- Mark (8/5): Better than expected 👍 - Decent location, quiet and <10min drive from Barnard Castle and <30 from loads of Dales walks.
- Jonathan (10/5): - Food was amazing
- Debbie (10/5): - Everyone was very caring, dog friendly and helpful... going the extra mile to meet all our needs.
Thank you everyone.
- Peter (10/5): Great stay - I have used this hotel several times and am always impressed with the friendly staff. Rooms are comfortable and at a good price
- Julia (10/5): Wonderful hotel - We had a wonderful 2 nights stay. The staff were fabulous, the breakfast 10 out of 10. The room was clean spacious, and well equipped. We had lovely big fluffy towels, the only complaint would be the mattress but I am very fussy with mattresses.
- Martin (4/5): - Room not available at check in at 6pm! Spa not available as there were no spaces left. Room was down the road in another building. Curtains were paper thin so woke up at dawn. Bar full of local workmen in overalls and boots.
- C m dunne (8/5): - Very small room no heating on do room felt cold on arrivel .
Traveled with dog no facilities in room for dog ie dog bowl
- Mr (8/5): Friendly and cosy - Lovely homely hotel with very friendly staff.
Food was lovely and had a cosy bar with a real fire.
Hotel is a little dated however staff are excellent. Lovely surroundings and had a visit to the spa however booking is essential to avoid any disappointment.
We had a room on the road side of the hotel and with the windows open could hear the traffic from the nearby A66.
Would definitely stay again if in the area.
- Frank (10/5): - The staff were fantastic. Excellent value for the money. The Breakfast was outstanding.
- Susan (10/5): - Enjoyed a lovely comfortable break for very reasonable price. Welcoming log fire in bar and very pleasant staff through out hotel. Excellent breakfast.
- Jan (10/5): - Friendly, helpful staff, good food, comfy bed - all warm and welcoming. Will be back
- Neil (6/5): Overall adequate accommodation but a little tired. - We stayed overnight at The Morritt on a long road trip from Inverness to Stevenage. The hotel is dog friendly, our small dog was with us. The room was adequate but a little tired. Good tea & coffee facilities in the room. Very friendly staff but we felt £18.95 for basic fish & chips in the bar a tad pricey.
- Michael (10/5): Excellent hotel and great value for money - Stayed one night on a visit to the nearby Bowes Museum. We had a very pleasant drink in the hotel bar (famous wall murals) followed by an excellent dinner
Our room was comfortable (though I needed to remake the bed - sheets were crumpled and not tucked in).
Lovely full breakfast.
We're looking forward to our next stay in this great hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Evening meal choice - Enjoyed our stay ,no complaints apart from the lack of choice of food on the evening meals,so after the first evening we ate elsewhere,...the breakfast meals had plenty of choice the food at breakfast was plentiful and tasty ...
- richard (10/5): - Totally amazing hotel, welcoming, clean, tidy, great night sleep, superb buffet breakfast
- James (8/5): - I was told on the phone that I could charge my electric car for free at the hotel but when I got there I was charged an exorbitant price, the twin room was badly decorated and looking onto the workman’s shed and the flat roof. The service was good and the food was nice.
- Edmund (6/5): It was okay - Standard room was in fact tiny, with a v small double bed, which was also damn uncomfortable. Rubbish mattress.
No bulb in bedside lamp. The kids twin room was a good size.
Breakfast was a bit slow getting going, and they were pretty forgetful bringing the toast we requested.
Cooked breakfast looked good.
Coffee average.
- John (6/5): - Excellent breakfast friendly staff
- Stephen (8/5): - Pleasant stay. Good value stay with good breakfast
- Robert (8/5): - It was ok for the price we paid. The room was ok but dated furnature and a hard matress. However, we did sleep altgough some room neighbours were noisey late PM and early AM. Not the hotels fault.
The blind in the bathroom was broken, it happens but when we reported it we were informed it had been reported 4 times before. It needs fixing.
I would visit again as it was a nice place. Tge staff were pleasant although we had to wait quite a whike to be served.
- Jane (10/5): - Lovely place to stay nothing was to much trouble
- Nina (6/5): - Excellent professional service from all the staff we met. Nice bar meal and wonderful breakfast. The hotel itself is wonderfully characterful, but we were very disappointed to be allocated a “garden room” round the corner from the main hotel (not a garden in sight, in fact just a small yard with a high fence furnished with a rusting sardine can - we were next to the bins.) The decor was tired, dated and ill-furnished: not even a dressing table (or indeed a table), nor drawers for clothes. The hotel is a real hidden treasure- just a shame we didn’t get to stay in it!
- Stuart (6/5): - Good location, free parking, nice garden.
Disappointing to experience: Room housekeeping poor, old and dark interior in need of complete refurbishment.
Lack of staff to greet at breakfast or reception. Lack of courtesy to ask about stay on departure.
- Cher (8/5): - Loved the hotel it's self, lovely grounds. The bed was like an ironing board hardly any sleep. Staff where great.
- Bernardus (8/5): - Very friendly staff. Nice food. Old building but well maintained. Good bed. Good breakfast.
- Cherry (10/5): Scotland stopover - Excellent care and comfort. Pleasant and helpful staff. So pleased we found this hotel on-line. We will certaintly make a return visit.
- Angela (8/5): Friendly and efficient - The stay was a meet up with my sister so I'd booked us into a twin bedded room. However, they gave us a very small double room. Went down to reception and we were instantly given a 2nd room at no charge as no twins were available. The receptionist was both apologetic and polite and we liked the way she not only dealt with us but sorted the problem straight away and in a very positive manner.
We used The Garage Spa, which was excellent. Will definitely be back
- Peter (8/5): - Staff friendliness
- Valerie (8/5): Pleasant Break - Very comfy beds and pillows. Lovely breakfast. Helpful and pleasant staff. Chosen for location to Barnard Castle and Bowes Museum.
- Alan (2/5): - We didn't stay for our planned night .
When we arrived they informed us that they was not a hotel room available for us
They blamed Expedia for this despite having our contact details.
We were very disappointed as we had travelled down which incurred travelling expenses there and to travel back home this spoilt our well deserved holiday night away .
- Michael (4/5): Could do better - The hotel could be so much better. The restaurant was good but not brilliant. The lighting is way to bright. There was an incident where we had no water in the morning, and reckon help from the reception. The room was spacious but could do with dusting and fixing the bathroom sink.
- Lawrence (8/5): A good location for a couple of days - Generally good however on the last day because there was a wedding the day before this caused a shortage at breakfast time. Found the noise from the A66 a bit irritating.
- Julia (10/5): - Perfect
- Mark (2/5): A very disappointing - Paid in advance for a "luxury double room" and was given a "classic double room" away from the main hotel. The room was tiny and wasn't cleaned properly with rubbish left in the bathroom from the previous guests. We also had no wifi in the room, something that was advertised and which we needed to be able to work. When I asked if we can be moved to the room which we paid for I was told nothing can be done as they are fully booked and when I asked about the wifi was told, "No, it doesn't really work there, you can try coming closer to the window that might work". I would recommend avoiding this hotel.
- Verified traveler (4/5): So so. Good in some respects not so in others. - Room ok, obviously one of the low end rooms. No drainage on shower or sink though, fully blocked with hair, but nice pressure on shower. Huge party happening somewhere which kept me awake until 2 am, breakfast was lovely.
- Adrian (10/5): Pleasant stay - Comfortable bed and room. Excellent food especially the pan fried salmon. Offered a miserable room about 60 metres from hotel entrance but were transferred to a pleasant room after complaining! Very good Covid policy.
- Verified traveler (6/5): so so - Hotel was not up to the cleanliness standard expected on arrival but hats off to the duty manager who rectified the problem immediately.
In general, the place just needs a bit of tender loving care and a new cleaning team!
Breakfast was great and dinner so so
- Royston (10/5): All smiles when one arrives. - It is nice sometimes to be "whelmed" by the public areas(restaurant, bar, lounge other socialising spaces), the variety of the rooms and the quality of the food. The Morrit was successful in this. We had a separate sitting/working area which was nice. The lounge had enough sitting furniture for several groups before or after meals. access of the A66 was easy in both directions.
- D (4/5): Faulty Towers - Was very much looking forward to our 6 night stay at the Morrit Arms Hotel. Using it as a base for our holiday in County Durham and further. We original booked up at Morrit to include our pet dog but unfortunately our pet dog became very unwell while we were on The Yorkshire Moors prior to arriving at the Morrit and had to be put to sleep. The reception was informed of this when we arrived, but we were still put in the pet freindly room. We are all well aware of Covid 19, but no where on their site did they mention there would be no room cleaning or servicing of rooms during our stay. On numerous occasions when had to ask for stocks of tea/coffee/milk clean bathroom towels as well as clean bedding after 4 days. The service at breakfast was a complete joke with not 1 of our 6 nights stay going without a problem whether it was missing cutlery, missing orders, no milk when given cereals and the list goes on. One night we wanted to have a drink from the bar to be drunk outside in the garden but all garden lights were turned off, so we found ourselves in darkness. We were told to wear masks while walking around the hotel but this only seamed to apply to my wife and l. At the end of our stay and after paying our bill l noticed they had charged us the extra £10 for a dog we did not have. We will never stay there again. The place in a joke. Just a quick shout out to 3 employees the 2 night managers and Dawn in the breakfast room nice people, and good at their jobs.
- Joanne (10/5): - A truly wonderful stay. We went for our wedding anniversary and cannot find a fault. The staff, building, food and gardens were all fantastic. Thank you so much. We will DEFINITELY return!
- Guy (8/5): Morritt Hotel - The Morritt Hotel is set in a stunning location with fantastic walks nearby. The staff were pleasant and helpful, the food was delicious and not over priced. The room and the ensuite was clean, however the floors hadn't been cleaned recently and the bathroom bin hadn't been emptied. These were minor points during what was a nice stay.
- Beverley (8/5): wonderful place x - Staff were amazing ... we went for a budget room which was still comfortable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Rooms need a good in-depth clean and updating. Old fashioned. Muriel on bar wall needs repairing and downstairs rooms need brightening up.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Needs updating bedrooms could do with a make over.
Staff and food good
- Lewis (10/5): Lovely hotel and surroundings off A66 - We stopped here for a change on our way to Scotland. The hotel is lovely to look at with idyllic surroundings. The staff were very friendly upon arrival and throughout. We enjoyed a drink in the lounge area before our room was ready. The room was a good size and very comfortable. We had dinner in the bistro which was also very good with the bar area offering lots of character.
Breakfast was very good the following morning and checkout easy.
Will definitely staff here again.
- LIAM (10/5): A very relaxing overnight stay & Spa - A very relaxing overnight stay combined with treatments at the hotels Garage Spa. The moonlit package was great after a long drive up and the following morning the Roof Top Cabriolet & Rasul Mud energised the muscles.
- Patrick (10/5): - Amazing place, well worth the effort to get there and stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fine country house hotel, comfortable room, good food and wine selection, offered by friendly, helpful staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location for a midway stop on the way to Scotland. Very nice room, lovely spa and good food.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The bedroom carpet needed a clean.
The bottom sheets were not tucked in on all sides, so the covers fell off.
The dining room was a pleasant room
- michael (6/5): False advertising of the spa - Unfortunately to use the spa 1 because it dosent say on app its £39 and 2 the receptionist said I couldn't use the spa as they needed to count heads...? The room was tiny and above a generator, gratefully I was moved to a bigger room. The food was nice and the staff were helpful. But this hotel is over priced for the quality of room and not been able to use the spa. I wouldn't stay here again
- Terence (10/5): The Great Get Away - Fantastic location for a cosy get away, staff, accommodation, food we're outstanding.
- Melissa (10/5): Great place - The bedrooms are a bit dated and tired BUT it was really clean, great food at reasonable prices, lovely surroundings and the staff were amazing. Definitely worth a visit.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The outside of the property and downstairs is lovely but our bedroom was rather shabby
- Verified traveler (8/5): - There was no WiFi coverage on the 2nd floor and there was no mobile data connectivity either. Rooms were nice. The restaurant was closed but the bar menu was available. Decent English breakfast. Spa access not included in room price.
- Piotr (8/5): Very cosy place. - Very cosy and quiet place near Barnard Castle.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The building is impressive, but everything else is very disappointing or downright terrible. Our room was very tired looking - no plug in the sink,
- Lynn (6/5): - We only stayed one night which was a Sunday it would have been good to have been told the restaurant was not open on a Sunday food was very average served in bar had to send two dinners back as they were cold. The bed we had was very small the situation of the hotel is lovely and the staff were very helpful
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Magnificent bedroom,very efficient,caring staff
Disappointed restaurant was closed both Sunday & monday
- Aruna (4/5): - Not very much of a facility or a flexibility with certain things. Restaurant closes as earlier as 9pm. And no food are served after this point what so ever. And hardly can find any where else to dine at night around his area. Over all it was not a good stay.
- JOHN (10/5): - Convenient for our needs and dog friendly. Convenient location both for the A1 and for exploring the local countryside.
- Sharon (10/5): Peace and Quiet - Hotel is tradition and well looked after. The location might be a little remote for some but we liked it for the views and quiet. We stayed for lunch which we enjoyed but were there for a visit to the spa mainly.
Unfortunately I took ill while there and the staff could not have been more kind. We did still stay in the hotel but couldn't use our voucher. The Spa staff allowed us to re-book the voucher for another time and as we loved it so much we have also booked another stay.
