Guest Reviews
- kteppich (2/5): Horrible old place - The hotel was old, had leaks in the ceiling in the lobby. They gave us a room that had no towels in the bathroom The pillow cases were wrinkled. They didn’t have real tv, they had Roku. So no live tv. Only one night stand. Our door wouldn’t close unless you slammed it shut. The pool was cold and the hot tub was broken.
We ended up leaving after a half hour and went next door to a nice hotel. Don’t stay there.
- margiec4909 (2/5): Hotel from hell - Quality Inn and Suites, Houghton Lake, Michigan - On July 30, 2022, we stayed at the Quality Inn and Suites in Houghton Lake, Michigan.
1. While the television was new, it was impossible to get any of the national channels – namely ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, etc. We could only stream programs such as the best of Family Feud.
2. We had to ask for extra towels four time before we received any.
3. We had to ask for more toilet paper as what was left on the roll would not support two adults.
4. The was no hair dryer in the room.
5. We had to spend $17.00 for breakfast because the facility did not provide the hot breakfast that is advertised from Choice Hotels. The juice was Sunny D. The pastries were not very appetizing and looked old. The only cereal was sugar coated. There was not a single serving of Cheerios or other cereal that was plain. The coffee was lukewarm and not very strong.
6. We do not understand why our charge card was not immediately processed. The charge did not occur until August 26, 2022, almost a month after our stay.
7. The side door was held open with a rock. This was definitely a security issue.
Do not stay here!
- elizabethhZ7142RD (2/5): Not ready for guests - No wi-fi, no TV, no phone, no in room coffee, no cups, no ice. No one at desk during the night. Routy guests not dealt with, one slept on the couch in the lobby. You get a uncomfortable bed and a bathroom. Can't check in early as doors are locked until 3:00 p.m.
- 899rods (2/5): BEWARE!! - Booked online. When we got there at 6PM the lights were off and the doors locked, red stickers on the door. Windows were broken and some were boarded up. The phone has been disconnected. This appears to be an abandoned property!
- angelajR3870LC (2/5): Closed for renovations - Booked this hotel online for memorial weekend and they are closed for renovations!!! So ridiculous that you can even book online still. 3 hour trip almost turned into a nightmare thankfully I found another hotel with openings close to this location!!!!!!!
- KJ (6/5): Motel in Transition - Room was nice but smoke alarm was not present and open wires were protruding from the wall. The door to the motel room hallway was never secured. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. The lobby had a mildew smell to it. Continental breakfast was limited to cereal, bagels, bread, peanut butter, jelly-no butter. Fruit available. Coffee was in the lobby.
I understand there are new owners who are making changes.
- Scott (2/5): The TV had one channel, the pool was freezing, and - The TV had one channel, the pool was freezing, and they had Tom had no hot water.
- TSaunders25 (10/5): Weekend Getaway - A very relaxing stay with my 3 children. The kids had plenty of room to venture around, swim, and play ping pong. They really enjoyed themselves. Yes the hotel is being renovated, but the staff went the extra mile to make sure that we were comfortable with our stay! Cannot wait to see the hotel when it is finished.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Rundown dump that was expensive - This hotel fakes you out with the photos they post online..they use some of the only flattering pics they have..pics are taken at a distance so u cannot see details. It was over $200 for one night stay and the entire place looked as if it were closed for many years and the bare minimum was done to get it open.. carpets we're stained, the place was dirty, dingy, and poorly lit. Garbages were overflowing outside doors onto the ground and was never taken out and cleaned up for our entire stay..the beds were poor condition and uncomfortable. Little to no amenities. I could continue to go on but I think this should suffice..do not stay here..my bet is it's closed for good within 6 months. Also the front desk girl was walking around bare foot and chain smoking cigarettes outside..was hard to find an actual worked that belonged their..she was 19 and running the entire place on a Saturday night with no other help. Very poorly managed hotel. Drive a little farther to Grayling or Clare if u have to if there is no other option at Houghton lake.
- Natti_Cpq (2/5): Never again, dirty, no hygiene - I wish I had time to read other travelers review but I didn't.
This hotel is totally overpriced although it looks like it's under renovation. The bulb and the lightning is missing on the wall, the breakfast is horrible. The worst thing is that when I decided to finally get to bed and uncover the blanket I found the bed is full of food crumbs and leftovers from other visitors! The cover and sheets are all with stains. This is absolutely unacceptable!!! Of course nobody was on the front desk to assist and provide with clean linen.
And let me tell you, there were 3 other people in the hotel and they couldn't service people properly and clean the laundry after the visitors. Never again to any other Travelodge.
- pam (8/5): Nice - Easy to get to. Close to restaurants and fuel stations. Nice people.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Hard to sleep, scary - We found 3 spiders: 2 in the wall and 1 on my bed. I am nervous about spiders, mostly when I am sleeping. Also in our bathroom there was a hole in the wall. Maybe a rat can come in at the night, who never knows.
- Bill (4/5): Unprepared for guests - Hot and cold water plumbing reversed in bathroom sink
Dirty face towel
No phone
No drinking glasses or cups
Musty/old odour permeated the room and building.
Lots of staining in bathroom area.
Plumbing in shower loose.
Carpets needed cleaning
Big complex apparently recently purchased needs a lot of updating/maintenance seems like they are accepting guests before they are ready. Cash flow?
Desk staff, while pleasant enough, seemed inadequate in anticipating guests needs eg complimentary breakfast was missed by us because we assumed there was none but it was held in an area behind some doors. There were no signs directing people and the staff didn't volunteer any info or directions. A simple enough thing to do. Maybe more training?
- 678rg (2/5): Never again - Smell of smoke in hallway and room, no screens on window, dirty sheets, toilet run continuously, no plugs in sink or tub, back door broken - propped open, had to giggle my door latch to get it locked, light bulb burned out, no light bulb beside bed, breakfast included sour milk and stale cereal, no phone, mouse in room. homeless people living there
- Cynthia (8/5): Travelodge Houghton Lake - We go yearly to visit friends and have stayed when this location was under other ownership. Still.under renovations. Not a good time of year to be there as there is a big community event and things can be noisy.
- Heinrich (2/5): Never again - We picked this hotel because it was the only one that had room. We checked in around 9:45 pm to find a long line of guests also trying to check in, waiting for a clean room, or needing a second key because the first one did not open the door. After we got our room, 30 minutes later we found the following issues:
- outside entry doors could not be locked
- overflowing garbage cans right next to the entry way
- electronics on the inside of the room door held on with electrical tape
- carpet old and worn
- no mattress protectors on the bed, just a sheet
- boxspring with heavy stains on the side that is visible to the room
- oldest TV I have seen in a long time
- overall the room was old and in need of a complete remodel
- the free breakfast was served in a conference on table cloth that had been used several days and full of stains
- the Juice provided was Tang I believe, definitely not orange juice
- the Waffle makers were both had broken timers so impossible to get the waffles right
- the coffee was served in the hallway away from the breakfast area and was old and burnt
To summarize, stay away from this hotel if you can.
- jancouchie (2/5): Overpriced and Understaffed NOT worth the drive or effort! - The room looked very nice at a fast glance! These guys are renovating and the rooms look it, too! Large holes where the pipes go thru the wall, rust covering the toilet and the room wasn't cleaned! Garbage overflowing outside and grass hadn't been cut all summer. The worst thing....I locked my keys in the room at 6:30 am and the owner had only left a phone on the desk with a number to call...so I did 6 times! NO one but no one came to open the door...I even climbed over the desk looking for a spare key, anything to open the door! They say "they offer a breakfast at 7 am" no one showed up until 8 and put out a box of Fruit loops and some milk! I didn't get my key until 9:30 am when the manager came out from his room showered and didn't ever say "sorry" for making us wait 3 hours! Way, way over priced and NO assistance from the staff! Never again, Travelodge....NEVER!
- Tim (2/5): The hotel shouldn't be open to the public. - The hotel shouldn't be open to the public,it's bad and I paid $125.00 for the room want a refund.
- Arianna (2/5): Don't do it! - When we arrived at the hotel we actually sat in our car for a good 5-10 minutes seriously contemplating if we HAD to stay here or not, considering we prepaid for this stay we did end up having to stay but we will not stay here ever again.
The outside is very run down; broken windows, the side door doesn't have a lock on it so anyone that wants in is free to come and go, our room was dirty- shower had left over washcloths in it as well as used shampoo and bar soap, the towels are stained.
Front door service was very poor. We had several heavy bags/coolers for our weekend stay and they don't have courtesy carts or elevators for those on the second floor. I called before arriving to make sure the pool was 24/7 as advertised and I was told it was and it was open, we arrived and the pool/spa were closed, when it did open we were told it closed at 10pm.
We will never stay here again. Next time we will spend the extra $30-40 to stay next door at the American Inn.
- Nancee (6/5): - was a little run down but looked like they are trying to remodel and they said on paper check in 2 but was really 3, but got us in at 2:30. The breakfast was to start at 6:30 but food was not out till 8 is
- Verified traveler (4/5): Hotel need a LOT of work - Hotel feels like it's right out of the 1970s, with perhaps new owners who might be just just barely starting some minor renovations. Rooms are very basic, large hole in bathroom wall where new plumbing was installed. Bathtub had rust stains. Key cards didn't work four times and then when we barely got them to work, they were intermittent at best. Breakfast was pretty horrible, even for motel standards. No hot water for oatmeal, for instance, Sunny D to serve as orange juice. Place just seems from another decade and didn't feel right at all. I'll definitely pass for another hotel in town next time.
- Verified traveler (4/5): They tried but failed. - I needed one cheap room for the night but I wish I would have driven back downstate. If you are going to refurbish a hotel then you should close-off what is not ready and execute the few rooms that you do have flawlessly. My room had cracked glass on inside pane; no pillow cases; no mattress cover (one fitted sheet between you and mattress); bathroom door would not close (screws were stripped in wood);
Hotel staff (staff of 2 that I saw) were certainly not rude but lacking of help.
I realize some investor group bought this asset (money pit) under the assumption that there would be cashflow but they were not told the full truth.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - My boyfriend had to clean the pool out before kids could go swimming.I walked into my room and there was a snack cake wrapper on the floor. There were wires sticking out of the wall.Wish i could give a lesson on how to clean the room.Like staying because of the spirits that are around the hotel.
- kent (2/5): Craphole - Place was pathetic. This is just one craphole that should not be open.
- David (2/5): Run away as fast as you can from this hotel - It was horrible, side entrance door is unlocked all night, paid for queen beds got old full beds. The headboards were caked with dust and dirt, had to take a Benadryl to stay. No phone in room, not even just to call front desk. Musty smelling really bad in main entrance. Neighboring toilet ran all night and we could hear it loudly, our toilet ran too but we would jiggle the handle. Pillows were Holiday Inn pillows. Breakfast was a bag of cereal, milk and coffee. Keep your $50 we will never stay there again! Room looks nothing like pictures.
- Joshua (6/5): - Place will be nice but is currently under going remodeling so... Walking anywhere from the hotel be careful there was a restaurant owner that was very rude to my girlfriend and I for walking through the back of his parking lot on our a way to subway.
- bethanyalderman (2/5): 1970's Horror Movie Scene - That's what I felt like I was in. The place was gross. Hair on the sheets (not mine, I'm not that hairy) dead moth on the floor, dried pee on the toilet seat. If you need to sleep, sleep in your vehicle!
- 935daleh (2/5): Ice fishing with son - My son & I just stayed at the All Seasons Hotel & Conference Center in Houghton Lake,MI. On a fishing trip. This hotel should be condemn. I have never complained before but this was too much. There was plastic up dividing the lobby from the conference area. The pool was closed & the water is green in hottub, the outside security door has no lock, the smoke detector was missing & wires hanging, the widows were screwed closed, it took us 13hrs to get towels for the second night, noone cleaned the room & the parking lot was all ice with noone plowing or salting. I have pics. If needed. I know this place cannot be up to code. This place doesnt deserve 1 star or any recommendations. They do not offer coffee until 7 am per "there bosses orders". I have pics but don't know how to transfer. I don't require much but this is unacceptable. I strongly recommend a walk through.
- NukedNative (2/5): The best part? We get released tomorrow. Bad part? We paid for this... - Where do I start?
The front desk guy was sleeping upon arrival. Huh? Yes, snoring.
Told us we were lucky and that we got their last jacuzzi room. There was one other guest in the establishment. And a car in the lot that is half a step from being on blocks.
Was sleeping again when we had to walk up there for toilet paper after getting in our room. Yes, there was NO toilet paper, no kleenex, nothing.
The bath non slip mat had black stains where decades of feet have stood.
The yellow towels told us of their memories of whiteness.
The toilet seat was broken.
The fridge has mold over 50% of the top of the door.
We killed 16 spiders.
There's a nail sticking up holding the tile next to the jacuzzi in the room.
The heated pool was cold.
Room keys do not open exterior doors from the outside.
There are No Phones in the rooms.
The jacuzzi dumped seriously half a cup of sand into the bottom of it when the jets were turned on.
The air conditioners are put in with spray foam adhesive, which covers the carpet in the surrounding 6 square feet.
The shower temperature was consistent. Every 5 seconds, the ice water would warm. Ok, maybe not every 5 seconds, but most of them.
If you finished reading this, please believe when I tell you, avoid this place at any and all costs. Drive to Detroit and sleep in your car.
- fvc_2886 (2/5): WARNING!! - The mattress had stains on it. Stains on the sheets along with cigarette burn holes. There was hair in the tub. Dust on the lamps. The keycard door mechanism was held with tape and the door didn't shut properly. When i tried to call the desk the phone didn't work.
Went straight out to talk to the desk and explain the situation. The clerk didn't seemed very interested in helping. Couldn't get my money back because he didn't have clearance to do so and the manager wasn't going to be there until the next morning. When i called the manager the next day he had to talk it with the owner. The owner never called me so i called again. The manager said that there was nothing wrong with the room and the mattress stains must've simply been the springs rusting(because that makes it any better). The phone is just for looks according to him. If you need assistance you use your cellphone. Even though we walked right out and didn't stay that night the owner refused to refund our money and didn't even had the decency to call. Worst place i have ever been.
- C8995PXcindys (4/5): Had indoor pool and hot tub for a very reasonable price - Pros: Had indoor pool and hot tub for a very reasonable price. It was good for a rainy day. Jet tub room had a VERY LARGE Jacuzzi tub :) The hotel just reopened and was pretty deserted. Friendly staff! Room had a fridge and microwave.
Cons: Air conditioner didn't work. It would only stay on for a short period of time and didn't really cool the room. Sauna room and exercise room, pool bathroom was locked up. Hotel barely had any lights on in the large room by the pool. Pool was chilly. Jacuzzi tub water looked very yellow. I assume they never fully reopened when the hotel reopened. The hotel smelled like mold and I am pretty sure there was mold in our bathroom ceiling, which was drooping in a spot. When we got into our room we had no bath towels. The bed only had sheets and a cover, so I had to go ask for a blanket. Hotel looked like at one point it was a nice place, but it is kind of trashy now.
- 503julis (4/5): Clean room, but very dated. - We had no other hotel options for our 1 night stay due to last minute business trip. We stay in hotels 5-10 nights a month and have stayed at several there in Houghton Lake this year. All that said, here is my 2 cents:
Pros- Clean room, vicinity to our business and all restaurants is good.
Cons- very dated hotel inside and out, no updates to TVs, furniture, carpet, bedding, etc. Not a great value for the money (we paid 80.00 for king). There was a used towel left hanging on the back of the bathroom door. We had to ask for another sheet for the bed cause it was made with just the bottom one and then the bedspread. C as rd in room ask for comments of any necessary repairs/attention to room but no pen to make comments.
- jillbY894OH (2/5): Filthiest, nastiest place I've ever seen - This "hotel" was , without a doubt, the worst place I've ever planned to stay. (Actually didn't stay when I saw the room.)
It was dirty, carpet totally stained, bathroom and toilet wasn't cleaned, horrible odors, hodge podge furniture. Walking down hall towards room, the entire door handles and locks were missing from some rooms.
The clientele was questionable. People lurking in the parking lot. Made me worry about my car and things inside it.
The two desk clerks lacked in customer service skills and seemed to be clueless about everything. Unorganized.
Lobby furniture didn't match at all and looked like it had been picked up along the road -- probably back in the 1980's.
I was not only disgusted by this place, I was also a little freaked out by the people there.
- tucan143 (2/5): One nite - Thats all it took....no breakfast, nasty coffee, horrible building inside and out , dirty rooms,no hot water, cant see out the windows, dirty floors none the the outer door have card readers that work so u have to prop open the doors with rocks, very stupid and will never be back
- juliek141414 (2/5): Look somewhere else! - I don't recommend this hotel. The desk service was nice, but not professional. He couldn't find the reservation for the lady in front of me, then couldn't find mine. He had to hunt through stacks of paper then found mine written in the margins of a notebook! We reserved a king and when we got there were told they overbooked and I would have to take a double. Hotel seemed empty for that... The hotel also smelled really bad. It was super hot in the lobby, and the guy at the desk was sweating. It was 90 degrees out and the air wasn't on at 3:00 in the afternoon! Half of the hotel was not in use and was blocked off. The staff blocked open the back doors, which were supposed to remain locked for our protection, because they said the cards never worked in them. It wasn't s pleasant night for us at all.
- 594robynb (2/5): Very poor quality. AC not working? - Air conditioning seemed to not be working . Was very hot in the lobby and hotel room itself. Hotel had a musty smell. Pool was green and visibly dirty. Large hotel mostly empty. Restaurant no longer in hotel. Lobby appears to be under construction .
- B2955IHstevem (2/5): Shocked at How Bad This Place is - I have stayed in dives all over the country, but this place shocked me. This is an extremely poorly kept property inside and out. Years of neglect are apparent throughout. We tried 4 rooms before we gave up and just picked one; we had no choice, all area hotels were booked. Every guest we ran into was having issues. They didn't have king rooms as advertised. The toilet in our first room was inoperable and contain the remnants of a previous guest. The door locks did not work on a few rooms and none of the exterior security doors worked so they were all propped open with broken chunks or concrete from the decaying sidewalks. The shower was stained and disgusting, the shower head sprayed water inside the walls. The lobby smelled of mold an all the carpeting was torn, stained, and sticky. We found bugs in the pillow case of one room we rejected. Ours worked, but several guests complained that their ACs were inoperable. This place should is not fit for habitation. It's under new management. Shut it down and re-open after it has been cleaned and repaired.
