Guest Reviews
- Kah Chin (6/5): - Environment and surrounded by trees. Not value for money, paying RM 2.5K for 3 rooms for 1 night, expensive without facilities.
- Yaling (10/5): -
- HSUEHYUNG (10/5): The best hostel I have stayed! So many merits here! If I go here again, I will stay here absolutely! - Good position, warm service, delicious breakfast, and nice building!
- Leonardo (5/5): Basic lodge in a forest. Concierge was a bit creepy. - Nothing Location
- Prof. Franz (10/5): Lovely, great host, great house, great location in the woods about 1.2 km from the slopes - The architecture of the building with the wide windows into Nature and the wood stove inside is wonderful. The host is very helpful, he even played guitar with another guest and entertained us nicely. The homemade breakfast is terrific and made on time to your specified time without a wait. It's a very personal experience, much nicer than staying at the nearby Shin Prince Hotel which costs a lot more (but is located right at the slopes). If you need a bathroom inside the room, I believe there are only a few rooms that provide that. However, the community bathroom is super clean and well kept. There is even a big bathtub that can be used as a tiny onsen (i.e. shower before entering).

- Jhih Ting (9/5): -
- Ruixue (7/5): For a short stay - Nice location and very friendly staff. The shared toilet and shower room are in Basement, far away from the room.
- Tracey (10/5): - Jun-san was a warm host. He gave us hints about the local ski hill and prepared the most delicious breakfasts. The accommodations were very relaxing with the wood burning stove and A frame window view. Would highly recommend.
- Jia Li (9/5): Amazing, will be back again! - Superb second gen owner that was really friendly, accommodating, whipped up great breakfasts and a pro at solving the Rubik’s cube! Property had everything you need, even a shared family bath you can book if you’d like an authentic Jap experience. We snowboarded nearby at the Furano hills which was great, location is nearby and super easy to get around with a car. Having an onsen would’ve been a plus!
- CHANYU (10/5): - Lovely and cozy place

- Guilmette (10/5): - Great host, delicious breakfast and dinner, great location
- Mikiya (8/5): -
- Otto (10/5): A (Hokkaido) home away from home. A thoroughly enjoyable stay with a wonderful family. - The whole experience at Pension Gooseberry was a joy throughout, with our hosts being the most friendly and accommodating people on our trip in Japan. They made us breakfast each morning and even offered dinner each night to eat with the family! While the rooms are small, they are cosy with comfy beds. The building itself is beautiful with a wooden beamed structure and plenty of natural light. They also have a couple of Weimaraner dogs who you can meet. We cannot thank the Gooseberry family enough for their incredible hospitality and genuinely hope to see them again in the future. Furano is a magical place made even more special by the people who live there! The towels were quite small but this was not a major issue at all! Everything else was perfect.
- Dinham (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dinham (9/5): Superb - Very clean and warm. Great drying room for skiers. Close to gondola but requires a car as too far to walk to shuttle bus Some rooms had small floor space.
- Ang (9/5): Linger and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. It is a hidden gem. - The breakfast is excellent. Simple yet nice. The owner is very friendly and approachable.
Most of the ingredients are from the local produce.
- Dinham (10/5): Highly Recommended - The breakfast provided was very good and the communal dining area was warm and inviting with a fire burning. The whole building was warm, well lit and very clean. Excellent ski drying room. The Prince Furano Ropeway ski lift was only 1.4km away which we drove to. The Japanese bath was a real bonus to use at the end of a hard days skiing. Joon was a generous and friendly host.
- Lavenia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wanchanok (10/5): Lovely and cozy place - The owner is very kind and helpful. Non
- Laurie (9/5): Superb - Jun is a wonderful host and it was perfect for our first stay in Japan. It’s quiet and removed from the ski area yet very close and feels like a true Japanese home. He also is a great cook!
- Heng (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lauren (10/5): The perfect place to discover Furano. This is 10/10 accomodation and we couldn’t recommend it more! - Beautiful location, and lovely host. Care put into every detail.
- May (10/5): Exceptional - Charming pension atmosphere with stunning snowy scenery during our stay, complemented by a delicious breakfast and a friendly owner.
- Lena (10/5): lovely - lovely host, lovely place, just lovely
- The pension is very beautiful and well maintained, cozy and comfortable!
During my stay, I didn’t see other customers so it was very quiet all the time, I believe people who enjoys me-time will definitely love this place!
The owner is a very friendly person! Though my Japanese is still very bad but he is always helpful! He can speak pretty good English, but I insisted to try my Japanese! So he is still very patient and calm!
I didn’t make any reservations for dinner in my first night, but I was riding motorcycle the whole so I would rather stay in the pension and not going out to look for dinner! He was super nice to serve me a simple meal with warmth! There was homemade ice cream for the dessert!
The owner is a good chef and all the ingredients he used for the meals were sourced from Furano! I am grateful I can taste that furano favored in the meals! Yes, I had breakfast and dinner again on the second day! The room I was staying is a room at second floor without toilet and bathroom, it is not a big issue during normal hours, but when it is late night, one might fear making noises walking two stairs down to toilet or bathroom! Otherwise, everything is near perfect!
- Tsuyoshi (10/5): It’s really cozy and pretty place and totally enjoyed the stay. Will definitely come back in winter. - It’s not far from the some famous sightseeing places in Furano or Biei.
The owner was really friendly and capable and introduced us about good place to go. We ordered the breakfast for 2 days and they were extremely good. We especially loved their homemade scones!
We chose to stay in the room with the ladder and my 12 years old daughter really enjoyed the place. Cleaned and quite comfortable. Nothing special but we took a time to find this place by using Google map at first time. So it’s better to note the detailed route or direction how the guest get there.
- Paul (9/5): Lovely pension, lovely spot. Bit out of town, but very nice indeed. We'll be back. - Lovely little pension (very photogenic!) in a lovely little spot. What you've got to know about Furano is that there are two areas: the main bit with the JR station, bars & restaurants and the skiing area with the pensions, slightly more isolated restaurants and the après ski stuff. Pension Gooseberry is in the latter area, in fact a little outside it. You will need a car or motorbike to get yourself around but, on a quiet road outside of town, this may well be the nicest place to stay.
Yes, it's a "shared bathroom" type of place - there's a lot of that over here - but it is nicely appointed and the staff are lovely and vert accommodating. Great breakfast full of local produce. The coffee and scones just kept on coming.
They sorted a covered area for us to park the motorbike and were full of useful information. We left promising to return. The room itself was a bit threadbare. Two beds and a cupboard. That's it. No bedside tables, no bedside lighting. Not much at all. The air-conditioning worked though, thank God. It was no deal breaker but the room itself wasn't very exciting.
- Biyun (10/5): Nice experience overall. - It’s full of characters. The owner is super nice and friendly! The wall is too thin. I was waken up by the alarm from next door at 04:00 in the morning.
- Susanna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gibi (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was great and prepared by the owner itself.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Margaretha (9/5): A relaxing forest escape - The host Jun treated us extremely well, was unbelievable helpful and considerate. Breakfast was always something to look forward to and he offered to cook an evening meal on request. The place is very peaceful, but without a vehicle you need to walk 20 minutes to the ski resort, where ski lockers are available. The room layout and size
- Hayden (10/5): - Really beautiful property.
Everything was super clean and in great condition.
The bath is amazing and perfect for recovery after skiing all day!
Jun made us amazing food for breakfast and lunch when we needed it, overall I would come again.
- anuwat (10/5): - Very beautiful place
- Cristy (8/5): It was a pleasure staycation at Pension Goosberry. June was a good hosts! - Location and Hospitality Not much, maybe food
- Karl (10/5): Exceptional - The Man that runs the place goes above and beyond to make sure you are well taken care of. It is not super kid friendly. the room was a little warm for my liking.
- Cc (9/5): Superb - For those nervous about the shared bathrooms: we never had to wait to use the shared toilets (two for men, two for women), or the shared Japanese style bath, which is kept quite hot and perfect after a day of snowboarding. In fact, we preferred a spacious, common bath to a small private bathtub/shower. I also recommend opting for breakfast, it's very good, and at the end, the host brings you a pot of fresh herbal tea. There's also a shared ski storage room, which is very useful. The room doesn't have much free floor space, but we only bought a smaller bag each so it was ok. Our room also had a loft area, which could be used as a third sleeping spot, or an area to lay out larger luggage.
- Ashley (10/5): A very nice homestay -
- Patcharin (8/5): nice place with great view - Lobby is nice, good view Owner is nice, but he can't speak English, cause some misunderstand. I arrive early before check in time, and need to use restroom at lobby, he didn't allow us for using because it is not check in time. So I felt a bit disappointed. Overall he is very nice. I understand him, it is the policy.
- Mia (6/5): Pleasant - Lovely and kind host. Beautiful common area with a fireplace. If you don’t have a car then don’t stay here. It’s a 30-45min walk into town or a 15min walk to the closest bus stop (which was unreliable and had super irregular times anyway).
Unfortunately there’s no microwave and no facilities to prepare your own food. This made it very difficult at dinner time, as there are no shops or restaurants accessible on foot. You could hike to the New Furano Prince hotel for the expensive dinner buffet, but even then it would be a 15/20min walk. This accom is a bit isolated.
We went in winter for skiing, under the impression that the ski lifts were walking distance. It ended up being a 20min hike through ankle deep snow along the side of the road (with all our equipment) extremely exhausting, especially at the end of a day of skiing. If you don’t have a car and want to ski, you’re better off staying in the main part of town (kitanomine gondola side)!
- LO (10/5): Just enjoyable - The breakfast and dinner are both delicious. It is close to Ningle Terrance. Owner is friendly and staying in here is very comfortable. It is an unforgettable memory. Thank you so much.
- Wan (9/5): Pretty warm, the host is very enthusiastic to the clients and made yummy and nice breakfast. - Dinning room It would be better if one end of the bed is against the wall.
- Yuwapan (10/5): Lovely heartwarming place to stay in Furano - Lovely heartwarming place to stay. We were there with a heavy snow. Mr.Jun the owner has been eager to help with everything. He gave us some ice cream to enjoy spending time in the common area before bed. And prepared lovely breakfast for us in the next morning. Everything was homemade and so yummy.
The location might be good for those with own cars. None
- Panupat (8/5): OK - The room is comfy. There are no microwave and wash basin in the dinning area.
- Yong (1/5): Very unpleasant - Slightly near to Ningle terrace No amenities, small, not kids friendly, out of the way, not worth the money.
- Fong (10/5): It was a pleasant experience. - The building is warm and beautiful. The owner Jun also very friendly and helpful. It’s not so easy to reach by public transport, but if you are driving, I highly recommend you to choose this place.
- Jun (8/5): Would stay again! - The owners were very friendly and nice. They gave us corn (which was very sweet!) while we were chilling in the common room at night. The common room had snacks and water for free and was very comfy. We also enjoyed the public Japanese-style family bathroom, with a hot bath to soak in after bathing. Pillows and bed were comfy and we had a good night's rest (: Take note that the bunk bed ladder for the 3 ppl room is really high and can be scary for some people to climb up. The location was also slightly further from the town area, around 15 min drive but near Ningle Terrace (which doesn't have much tbh)
- Ignacio (8/5): Very good -
- Ng (8/5): Nice countryside pension - Superb
Friendly host No private bathroom
- Chris (8/5): Charming - Lovely breakfast with delicious freshly baked scones and green salad picked from the owner’s vegetable patch. The breakfast room was large, airy and restful The rooms and bathrooms are honestly a little spartan. But they are scrupulously clean. The bath towels supplied are really too small
- Summer (10/5): Fantastic location, great customer service - Very sweet place, and in walking distance of the ski lift. the people running the place were very lovely and really helpful - they even offered us some of their homemade ice cream and it was amazing!
- Pothiwan (10/5): Exceptional - Staff is so friendly. Near ski area and ningle terrace.
- Sophawara (10/5): Nice & cozy home stay that worth the money - The room and the owner is so kind and nice. Nothing
- Piotr (9/5): Superb - Personel is amazing, very friendly. Very positiv vibe around. Good location easy Access after skiing Rooms are quite small but its ok to stay there for few days
- Chau (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marthe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Agnes (10/5): Lovely stay. Would love to be back - Lovely people, I get to play with their dogs! ❤️
- Wei (9/5): Superb -
- Jesse (10/5): Exceptional - June was a very helpful host and his service was fantastic. It’s a cute little pension and we will definitely stay there again if we’re in the area.
- Sally (10/5): Exceptional -
(10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was awesome!
- Robert (10/5): - We loved staying here. The host was wonderful and the building was very clean, warm amd cozy
- Sava (10/5): - Great stay. Wonderful host with a sweet, playful dog that’s very friendly. Clean house with a nice dining/common area and close to the slopes.
Beware: the closest 7-11 is a 40 minute walk and there is little public transport. Reccomended to have your own transport.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Friendly staff - Good service and staff were friendly. However the location ain’t convenient unless you’re driving. Water temperature is not consistent and wifi connection is pretty weak in rooms as well. Not really worth the price paid.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good for self-driving, easy parking, silent and comfort, and great breakfast
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- HUI TING (8/5):
