- Pia (4/5): Die Glanzzeiten sind vorbei. - Freundliches Personal, Parkplätze Das Hotel ist total runter gekommen. Die Ausstattung ist uralt, es riecht nach Chemikalien und wir hatten in unserem Zimmer einen alten Wasserschaden, der schön neben dem Bett zu sehen war. Auch das Badezimmer lädt nicht zum duschen ein.

The receptionist was very helpful and changed the room but I found the bathroom bin hadn't been emptied from previous occupant.

- Cathy (10/5): - Beautiful garden filled with nesting birds, beautiful old building with lovely decor. Reception staff were very accommodating, changing our booked room to twins and brought us blankets. The breakfast was the most traditional offering we’d had.

We are in our 70’s and had to maul suitcases up two steep flights of steep stairs, no lift. Paid for a superior room but the bed was so small and uncomfortable. The room should have had a king size bed. Room was very hot but it was not possible to open any windows.

Due to having the dog we were asked to eat our evening meal and breakfast in the reception area - which in itself we didn’t mind however there are no suitable tables in reception to eat from so it is pretty uncomfortable.

- Robert (6/5): The Pentland was not Penthouse - The location, parking and breakfast were all excellent. The quaint nature of the building and its interior were pluses. There was no hot water. Tepid at best and I wasn’t able to take a shower though I really wanted to. It had probably the worst WiFi I have ever had at any hotel anywhere! The sheets and bedding were clean but just looked old. The pillows felt like they were bought at the dollar store. I would not recommend or return in the future.

Bus tour had been in before us and although we were were in for breakfast an hour and fifteen minutes before breakfast finished the hot food was not being refreshed so some had run out, all tables were dirty, no glasses or cups or cutlery. On asking the single waitress on duty she was uninterested and it was about twenty minutes before we got cutlery and glasses. We gave up waiting for cups so did without a hot drink or hot food

Petit déjeuner copieux ouvert à 6h30 Chambre très bruyante : la fenêtre à guillotine ne permet ni l'isolation thermique ni surtout sonore. Jusque tard dans la soirée, passage de voitures aux échappements modifiés et les mouettes très bavardes à partir de 5h du matin !

Cleanliness of the rooms were poor, toothpaste stains in the bathroom, crumbs on the floor, just not quite right. TV in the main room didn't work. Breakfast was poor, waiting staff no where to be seen. All tables were either in use or dirty. Had to clean our own table and ask for our own cutlery. Just disappointing

- Lauren (8/5): Overall a nice hotel to stay in, comfortable and easily accessible for the village of Thurso. - We enjoyed looking at the memories of the history of Thurso in the books upstairs. The buffet breakfast was perfect and the staff were very friendly. It was difficult to get the shower temperature, it was either too cold or scorching hot. No complaints though as it was clean enough and we had a good sleep.

- Donald (6/5): Could be better - I'd say the location. I've stayed at the Pentland a few times previously when working in the area so I knew what to expect. This time I was with my wife after travelling to Thurso by train. I knew the hotel was basic, but clean and welcoming. The room was clean, and comfortable although there was a bit of black mould around the shower skirting. I knew breakfast was self service, but somehow I feel standards have dropped. No one was in the dinning room, and we had to go to reception to ask for the tea flask to be filled. The hot food was drying out and the eggs had been there for some time - not very appealing. Some reception staff were friendlier than others. One lady in particular was really helpful with local information. Drop in standards since my last visit. At a glance, the hotel is well presented, but the breakfast dinning room looked tired. There was mould on the paintwork near the windows and the blinds hadn't seen a duster for a while. We heard guests at a different breakfast table making comments about the hotel which mirrored our thoughts. One said it reminded them of Faulty Towers, which I think was a bit unfair. Despite this, I would consider staying again for a night, but the owners need to take note of their standards. I feel embarrassed when visitors from different countries experience these things.

- Gaurav (2/5): Photos are deceptive. I would avoid this hotel and Thurso. - Nothing much. The hotel is an old property. Rooms aren't that clean, have that old damp smell and feel claustrophobic. Thurso itself is an industrial town which might have seen better days in the past.

- Vaughan (1/5): Awful place - Not much The place was dirty and rundown. A used towel was still hanging on the back of the bathroom door. Plastic cups in the room were dirty. Breakfast was abysmal. Breakfast runs until 9, we arrived for breakfast just after 8. There were no fried eggs left, no hashbrowns, no beans, the bacon was dry and hard, the scrambled eggs looked like old wallpaper paste. I asked for eggs and hashbrowns and it took the better part of 20 minutes to arrive. The fruit was all but finished save for a few segments of citrus. The breakfast room was maybe a quarter full of people, but all the tables were covered in food crumbs and ickyness and had not been prepared. The bedding was old and tired and the towels were frayed. Just awful.

Not any comfy seating in bar area, but there is lots of seating at reception. Room had bath with shower above. Small double bed Only 1 hour parking in front of hotel. There is street parking 1 street up, behind the hotel.

Room was cold. Facilities on the website were not provided. We also given a standard double room until we went back to ask for a change. On our last day younger members of staff weening charge of the breakfast. The doffrence was night and day. Tables not set correctly. Milk not provided with a milk jug. Coffee was.cold and never filled during out time.

- James (4/5): Good location, nice room but it was cold as heating wasn’t on - Lovely big room, friendly staff. The room was lovely, good size but freezing. We contacted the receptionist, were told heating was on a timer. Contacted them 40 min’s later because still freezing, porter came over said again it was on a timer and must have gone off at about 4, I said that when we checked in there would still have been some residue heat in the room but it was freezing. He said he’d get us a heater, which he did, but it didn’t work. Phoned up the receptionist again she said that the porter had put the heating back on but it never worked. We had to sleep with our jackets and towels over the duvet as it was that cold.

- Paul (9/5): Usual high standards from Pentland Hotel & it's STAFF. - Usual friendly, helpful check-in & breakfast room. Room was spotless, spacious, comfortable, windows able to open & very very quiet. Strong steady wifi signal. Couple of minor things, I was in room #12 and the electrical socket provision was very poor. To use the kettle I was having to use the double socket behind the TV, with kettle under the TV. Where the desk is located has a single socket used for desk lamp, if you need to plug in a laptop, you need to ditch the lamp. Not much work needed to resolve these issues.

My dog was unsure of the revolving entrance door but there was another door I was able to use.

- Garry (9/5): One very satisfied customer - I arrived very late, the night porter was a credit to the hotel, friendly and helpful. 6.30 breakfast start was perfect as I had an early start.
- Simon (10/5): An excellent traditional Scottish hotel - Fantastic value for money, comfortable, convenient location, lovely food, friendly staff. I’m sure I’ll stay again. Wasn’t keen on the tea served in mugs at breakfast, but that’s my only quibble!

- Anne Louise (8/5): Comfortable and friendly staff - Location was perfect and all staff were really friendly and helpful in arranging an early check in. Hotel is a bit dated in parts but overall it fits the bill. Noise levels in my room were not the best, walls seemed paper thin as I could hear full conversations from adjoining room, I also had a continual running water noise which kept me awake the bulk of the night. There is no car park for the hotel so reliant on parking in nearby street which for me wasn't an issue but can imagine those with mobility difficulties it could be problematic.
- Tina (7/5): Ok place to stay in Thurso but needs updating - Staff were welcoming. Bar area was very nice. Was offered a choice of available rooms when our one was road facing. Room was dated. Tiny shower. On the road so noisy. Water dripping somewhere at night. Odd coloured bedding. All floors creaked. Breakfast wasn’t great.

- Jennifer (6/5): Zentrales Hotel - ok für eine Nacht - Gutes Frühstück, Parkplatz direkt vor dem Hotel, gutes Abendessen. Gute zentrale Lage. Das Zimmer war sehr dreckig (Boden und Bad), der Abfallkübel im Bad war bereits bei Ankunft voll von den Vorgängern.

- Nicoleta (6/5): - The architecture of the hotel was splendid and the location I called in the day of my booking asking details about any charges for pets, the lady at the phone told me that there isn't any as we have a cat, not a dog. Arrived at the hotel, 5 months later and they told me that I have to pay £10 per night because of our cat, which we paid without any other discussion. We checked in and figured it out that the bathroom floor was full of hair on the corners and the bathroom bin hasn't been emptied, it was full of dirty nappies. The lady from the reception came to empty it. The following 2 days, when they were cleaning, in none of them the bathroom was cleaned properly, we had to go and ask for handsoap, we had to go and ask for toilet paper. At breakfast, in our last day, the chef was dressed more like a painter than a cook, I doubt that any food hygiene rules apply. Overall, this will be a place that probably will never visit and would not recommend.

- Ross (5/5): - Good location. Most of the staff were friendly and welcoming. The food (dinner & breakfast) was decent. Our room was very quiet, and the beds were comfy. The place has clearly seen better days and feels a bit run down. The restaurant, bar, and corridors were all very cold (had to wear a scarf to dinner!) while our room was too hot (the heater wouldn't turn off and we had to leave a window open). No working fan in the bathroom, either.

- Lynette (3/5): I would be reluctant to recommend this hotel to friends. - Location was ok The beds were uncomfortable. The bathrooms had a musty smell and were exceptionally small. The Bain mare breakfast was not overly appealing.
