Guest Reviews
- CAROL (10/5): 12 out of 10 - Everything was way above any standard we have ever experienced before. Just beautiful in every way with wonderful staff and amenities. No a thing
- Alison (10/5): - Beautiful house in a beautiful setting. So peaceful. Breakfast was amazing. Enjoyed walking in the gardens and down to the lake Nothing
- Yvonne (9/5): Een aanrader - Hartelijk ontvangst bij de balie, prima kamer. Ontzettend mooie tuin om het gebouw. Mooi statig landhuis. Erg hondvriendelijk. Mooi terras erbij. Je kon een bar maaltijd bestellen. Maar er was ook restaurant gedeelte. Niets.
- Gordon (9/5): -
- Bluegirl72 (10/5): Beautiful hotel with stunning views - Beautiful hotel with stunning views of Lake Windermere & very well kept grounds. Friendly, helpful staff. We stayed in a ground floor room number 23 for 2 nightd due to my husbands disability. Beautiful little patio & lucky to have great weather sitting out in the sunshine. Easy access, large comfortable room, shower seat & room. Breakfast was lovely with hot & cold selection. Grace was very helpful with ideas on where to go & always very friendly. Great accessible parking
- Hathaway (10/5): -
- Daniel (9/5): - Location was very good for travelling around the Lakes, and the gardens / views were lovely.
- Darren (8/5): -
- Sprague (9/5): - fantastic location and very comfortable hotel. It's not cheap but well worth it.
- Gill (8/5): - Would come again and recommend friends as well.
- Lesley Anne (8/5): Fabulous hotel, lovely room and great staff. - Lovely property and staff serving breakfast in the morning were very accommodating. Dog friendly as well which is always good for us. Be aware that outside the dog rooms there is an unused small swimming pool which is empty but has woodland/weather debris in. Very muddy!!! Be cautious if you are walking with young children or have a dog that likes to swim!! Incidentally you are near the lake at the bottom of the hill. Our dog played deaf and forgot stay command!! š¾š¤£š¾š
- debbieh368 (8/5): A lovely stay apart from the dogs - Beautiful grounds and hotel. Staff are so warm and friendly. Breakfast was nice and we saw guests get flasks for their walks which was a nice touch. Rooms were spotless and good tea and coffee facilities. Only downside was dogs were allowed in the hotel and they woke us up barking despite moving rooms. The walls are thin and doors were banging at 4am.
- 179gail1960 (10/5): A real treat. - Our second visit to Cragwood was even better than our first. Lovely, spotlessly clean room (and I'm fussy!) with plenty of space and a wonderfully powerful shower. The grounds in springtime are just gorgeous. The food is delicious (though we really wish the menu changed more often - even just one new dish each night or couple of nights would be great. We would stay longer if it did). The staff are so friendly. It is beginning to feel like home! We will be back.
- carole (10/5): Excellent stay! - Excellent stay. Staff were very kind, helpful, attentive. Bedroom was very good, comfortable..
Terrace lovely, grounds immaculate, view amazing. Had good sunny weather and it was a great place to relax and have lunch. Thank you everyone for making my stay so good. Carole nil
- Liam (10/5): -
- Richard (8/5): Good value for money and first class food in the fine dining restaurant. - The room was comfortable and clean but a little on the small side, especially the bathroom. The view of the lake from our window was impressive and walks around the grounds were very pleasant. Dinner in the fine dining room was excellent and breakfast was also very good. The staff were all very friendly. The sound insulation between our room and the adjoining room was poor, mainly due to the interconnecting door. We were able to hear virtually every word from the guests in the adjoining room, which was far from ideal.
- davidjulies2026 (10/5): Magical hotel - We have just got back from our stay at the magnificent cragwood country house. Everything was amazing from start to finish, Massive shoutout to Sarah who served us during our stay and the receptionist Helen, both girls was lovely and Sarah delivered amazing service . Canāt wait to return
- Lombardo (1/5): Inconsiderate reception staff, dirty rooms - Food was good, house and grounds are beautiful and in a wonderful location along the lake. Lady at the bar taking food and drink order was lovely. Room had fleas and my legs and hand were all bitten during my stay, when informing the staff about this I was told I was wrong and no follow up regarding the matter. Room was tiny and not very clean. No staff on reception during check in and had to wait a while even when pressing the bell to inform them.
- Robina (5/5): Wouldn't go again..too dark and dismal for us, and certainly wouldn't pick a dog friendly , missed t - The room was quite big, and view was nice.Outside was glorious, lovely gardens and views The bed was uncomfortable, didn't look presentable. 2 english tea bags not enough, they are a cheap commodity. Door didn't shut properly. The whole place looked dark and needs an uplift! Was surprised to see dogs in the dining area where there is food. Some were a little yappie as well
- Fiona (10/5): We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with our friends! - The friendly staff looked after us brilliantly. Our room was clean and comfortable with everything we needed. The food was excellent with a good choice at every meal. The situation of the hotel is breathtaking with beautiful gardens. It is perfectly situated in central Lakes.
- Perangie (10/5): - Wonderfull hotel, great staff, views and scenery were amazing here. The breakfast was fantastic. Very expensive bar prices.
- Mohammed (9/5): -
- Adam (10/5): Beautiful hotel, will stay again when in the Lake District - Great location close to lake Windermere but secluded enough that there were no tourists around. The hotel and room was excellent and we really enjoyed the room and the amenities provided.
- Pedro (8/5): Very comfortable and cozy. - Clean, spacious room, warm clean toilet Decor a little old
- peter Robert (9/5): -
- Joanne (7/5): Beautiful property, in a beautiful location - The grounds and location were beautiful and the actual room was spacious The walls are paper thin and you could hear everything from other rooms. The bathroom is tiny and I had to reach above my head to get toilet paper, if you were a large person you wouldnāt have been able to go to the toilet in the room we had. Service was slow had to wait for ages to get a drink, when I finally got my drink the glass was dirty and had lipstick on it which was rectified once I pointed it out.
- Saleh (7/5): Great - Stunning view, spotless room, lovely staff, nice old building Privacy and noise, we can even hear other people farting, there are doors in each room between the rooms (emergency!!!!)
- Harrison (9/5): -
- stefan (8/5): -
- deepM9431MJ (10/5): Fabulous hotel in beautiful surroundings with amazing staff - We stayed at the Cragwood for 2 nights for my daughters wedding. The hotel is nicely decorated and very clean the rooms are lovey and the views are amazing.
The bathroom for our room (a lake view room) was very small but did have everything we needed.
The lake view rooms are situated right above the bar area so might get noisy later at night if there is an event on.
The views and location cannot be beaten, its a wonderful setting for a celebration.
We could not fault the food everything was delicious. The breakfast and 5 course menu was outstanding and the drinks are reasonably priced for this type of venue.
The staff are amazing! They can't do enough for you and are very polite.
Grace especially, she is a great credit to this hotel.
Would definitely consider staying here for a weekend away.
- Lynne (9/5): - Beautiful location, comfortable hotel and welcoming staff.
Genuinely dog-friendly. We had a very relaxing stay.
- Aoi (9/5): I want to come back again - A hotel like a castle with beautiful view and friendly staff
- Julie (10/5): - Lovely hotel friendly staff Nothing
- Alex (9/5): -
- Mrsjessup2012 (10/5): Exceptionally friendly staff - Lovely experience with great food and friendly staff. Our two dogs were made very welcome too!
- philip (6/5): Great location - Great location with nice garden grounds. Unfortunately for us we didn't get chance to explore that because of the weather. Sure it would have made a difference if it had been clear or sunny. There's also a nice view of the lake which we couldn't appreciate due to the fog. Accommodation is large and has a comfortable lobby and lounge area. Bedroom was sufficient. Good size bed and comfortable. Warm enough. Staff were friendly without being in your face. Breakfast was good. We had a wooden door in our room separating us from the adjacent room. The problem with that was you could hear everything the neighbours were saying and doing, including their TV, eating their food and sex. So privacy was lacking.
- Michala (9/5): Gorgeous, all good things! - This is by far the most beautiful place we stayed on our trip. This is just gorgeous. We loved our family room for our little one and the ability to walk right outside on the patio. The staff was nice but not always readily available. There were a few times we had questions and they weren't at the front desk but when we were able to ask them they helped with every request! Food was good!
- nickyt624 (8/5): Doggy tolerant⦠- The most wonderful about this hotel is its location on the bank of lake Windermere. The grounds are truly stunning as is the building, the cosy fires, panelling and grand staircases.
Mostly we enjoyed our stay, although the following points should be noted:
- Parts of the hotel are quite shabby, the reception area feels like a nursing home and the rooms could definitely do with an upgrade!
- Pillows were quite hard and room was too hot.
- A rather rude ;southern) breakfast waitress practically told us off for the dog not being āunder the tableā⦠I would say they are dog tolerant rather than dog friendly.
We wouldnāt stay there again but some of the staff were absolutely lovely and none of the above really spoiled our stay.
- Cheryl (9/5): -
- Julie (7/5): Lovely hotel and staff but unfortunately, the room was shabby. I was disappointed with the room. - I love the hotel and the staff The room was shabby, the curtains were torn, the walls were marked and tired, the bathroom door was dirty as was the bath panel.
- Alley (10/5): - Everything š Couldn't fault it š
- Gary (8/5): - All staff were friendly and attentive, food was gorgeous, roaring fires were great after a day out and about. The room we were in had an adjoining door this needs some kind of sound proofing as could hear every word from the people in the next room! Quite annoying!
- Christina (9/5): - The Views, decor, bed, dog friendly, friendly staff, food⦠all amazing I didnāt include breakfast in my booking
- Craig (6/5): - I was booked into room 5, poor quality of sleep due to doors in the corridor banging throughout the night which vibrated my room door, staff accommodation above my room which sounded like big foot parading across the floor throughout the night, giggles and conversations from room above, I actually got two hours of broken sleep from the night.
I was going to ask for a refund but I was so tired I couldn't face the conversation. I did comment that it is a lovely hotel, staff couldn't be more helpful, food was wonderful, I really would like to visit again
- Liam (8/5): -
- Heila (7/5): It was nice enough for one night but less than exspected - Nice room The breakfast waitress was very rude
- HEALD (8/5): Lovely hotel with skillful and attentive staff. Well done. - The hotel was just the kind we like with plenty of character, after reading up on the history we could see some of the beautiful features. The evening meal was excellent, we've never experienced fine dining before, both the food and the service was a credit to your staff. After drinks in the bar ware expertly served by the barman, especially the cocktails. We had a restful night's sleep in comfortable bed and finished off with a very good breakfast. In short we will not hesitate to recommend it to our friends and relatives and will definitely be staying with you again in the future. There wasn't anything we would complain about.
- rhidian (10/5): - The bar staff were amazingā¦.one gentleman even went to his room and gave us a can of fanta because the bar didnāt offer this. He didnāt charge us either. So generous. Very dog friendly and saw deer and squirrels in the garden on the way to the lake .
- Sherles00 (10/5): Romantic escape - We had a wonderful overnight break. We booked the romantic escape package which was perfect. The staff were really friendly and professional. Our room was a downstairs room which had doors to a patio area which was lovely. The heating in the room was very efficient, lovely and cosy and could be controlled by a dial on the wall near the radiator. Bathroom was nice with lovely toiletries. Bottled water, jar of sweets, usual tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits alongside an espresso machine. Towels and bedding of super quality and a very comfortable bed. Our package included a cream tea with a glass of Prosecco which we had in the library in front of the window - what an amazing view! We also ordered a toasted sandwich with chips which was lovely and very generous in portion size! We did a lovely walk out of the hotel and up the hill near the Merewood hotel opposite. Lovely views. The grounds should also be explored itās such a beautiful setting. Our package also included a four course dinner with an amuse-bouche to begin and finished with coffee and chocolate truffles. It was absolutely stunning. The best meal weāve ever had in the lakes. Thereās an extensive Wine list to choose from too. Our package included breakfast in bed and a late checkout which was a real treat! The breakfast was delivered hot and exactly on time! One thing which I do think should be included are bathrobes if you have booked the breakfast in bed otherwise it is a little awkward being in your nightwear as they bring the breakfast in. The only thing overall that I spotted which could be improved is that the library/lounges soft furnishings could do with a refurb some look tired and the cushions by the window have stains/dirty marks on them. The lunch and drinks menus next to the bar are also sticky/have coffee stains on them.
To sum up⦠We had a wonderful relaxing stay and would love to return one day.
- Will (1/5): Rubbish - Nothing Nothing like the pictures , big waste of money . Could of stayed in my mums box room and been £170 richer
- Lauren (9/5): Lovely peaceful stay, will definitely be returning - The place itself is absolutely beautiful. But we loved how dog friendly it was and the added little gifts for our dog in the room just made it even more perfect. Nothing we didnāt like, only thing is there should be more dog waste bins but not a huge issue!
- Michael (8/5): - Received a complimentary upgrade
Staff were very nice
- Hava (8/5): Beautiful and spotless hotel in stunning location - This my second visit to Cragwood. Beautiful hotel in a stunning location. The receptionists were lovely and helpful with great recommendations of what to do in the area . Room was spotless and bed super comfy. Gardens lovely even in the winter! Was really looking forward to sitting in the library with crackling wood burner however there was a wedding party and the lounge was off limits. This was a shame as use of the lounge is included as part of the Cragwood experience. Otherwise stay was truly relaxing and rejuvenating.
- Tess (9/5): -
- MartinMGB (10/5): Not sure about the lake view room. - We had three nights in late January 2026 and the notable thing is the staff are all really friendly and helpful. We took the Gourmet package and the food was excellent, and the included tickets for the return sailing from Ambleside to Bowness were a nice touch, too. The hotel is also ideally situated for the walk up to Troutbeck, and the gardens are lovely, too, with walks down to the lake shore.
The negatives, however, were the wi-fi was slow and unfortunately it was easier for me to tether to my phone for a work conference call. The real bug, though, was we booked a lake view room and were assigned Room 16 which is a partial lake view owing to the large roof in front of the window. This was not apparent when we booked although on re-checking the website it does state 16 is a partial view, but I do not recall being made aware that is what we were booking. That said, in summer with the trees in full leaf I don't think there would be much of a view in any case from any of the lake view rooms.
Overall, we would go back.
- Alison (8/5): We'll be back! - Breakfast was lovely. Staff genuinely attentive, welcoming and professional. Went the extra mile to accommodate us. Accommodation very comfortable and relaxing. Lovely window seat. Room slightly dated, but good view and space..
- Robin (10/5): Amazing location, friendly team, really comfortable stay - thanks! - Friendly team working there. Lovely old hotel with real character. I got a free upgrade from a single to double room which was much appreciated. Great breakfast and comfortable room. Would definitely recommend. Shout out to Jack who I had a good chat with - a really personable young man. Nada
- Darren (10/5): -
- Nina (3/5): Needs renovating - Location The tired bedroom decor
- 34sunrise (10/5): Very pleasant peaceful stay - Cragwood Hotel
This was our second stay at Cragwood Hotel and once again it didnāt disappoint. The grounds are beautiful, the staff are very friendly, and the hotel is genuinely pet-friendly.
After returning from a walk, we were pleasantly surprised to find a dog mat, drinking bowl, and a lovely dog hamper with treats and a toy left outside our room, such a thoughtful touch.
The hotel is peaceful and quiet, making it ideal for a really good nightās sleep. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice, and the walk down to the lake through the grounds is lovely.
There isnāt much immediately nearby, but itās only a short drive to Bowness, Windermere, or Ambleside, which makes it a great base for exploring the area. We would happily stay here again.
- traceyn627 (10/5): Perfect New Yearās Eve Wedding - We had our wedding in this fabulous place on NYE 2025. It is a beautiful old traditional building in the most wonderful lake side location.
The wedding coordinators Hannah and Mathilda looked after us with so much care and attention, before, during and after our wedding.
We had a number of visits and meetings before hand and nothing was too much trouble for them.
We attended an Open Day where we got to look at every room in the hotel. This assured us all our guests were getting a quality room to stay in.
The bridal suite is exceptional, the four poster bed, comfy arm chairs, lots of space for the wedding morning hair and makeup. Plus the views of the lake and fells from two side of the room were amazing.
We booked an exclusive use package and were fortunate enough to have the same for the pre wedding night too, as enough of our guests booked for two nights. This was a special time for our guests to chat and mix with each other in a cosy setting.
The food is impressive and delicious, starting with the pre wedding night Italian buffet, we booked for all our guests. Then the wedding day canapĆ©s, main meal and evening hot buffet were all served with precision. All our guests booked told us how much theyād enjoyed the food, which was indeed superb.
I was very nervous and anxious in the lead up to our wedding but on our arrival at venue, we were met with a hug from Stacey the Hotel Manager and Hannah and Mathilda.
That meant so much, after that we felt totally welcome and at home. We relaxed from that moment and had the most perfect four days there.
Stacey runs a wonderful hotel, where every member of the Cragwood team was friendly and helpful to us and all our guests.
- Amber (10/5): Perfect hotel to stop after cold winter walks - Staff were lovely
Very comfortable
Dog friendly Nothing
- Roe (8/5): - Staff were lovely.setting was lovely.breakfast was lovely.and the fine dining was excellent. Also the room was very nice Afternoon tea had to many cakes.not enough savoury.also toilet for guests downstairs needs work.
- Jade (7/5): -
- Simon (9/5): -
- Laura (10/5): -
- Gary (6/5): Good location. Hotel from a past generation. - Good views and location Staff not particulary interested.
Bizarre hotel layout
Some rooms badly needs of upgrade
Difficult to find as entrance and long road to hotel not lit
- vivien (6/5): Good service in the restaurant and bar - reception needs work - Breakfast was good and service was great Check in was a challenge we were given the wrong room keys. The room was incredibly noisy with a party of walkers (20+) meeting at 7am outside our room door. In the room next door the late night smoking on the patio was noisy and smelly. Reception told housekeeping we had left and so they came to clean our room while we were dressing
- Jayne (8/5): - Excellent
- grahame (9/5): - staff, room, view bar food menu
- William (10/5): We were very impressed with the excellent staff who were very polite, pleasant and very professional - What went well? Absolutely everything! Just a wonderful place to stay. Can't speak too highly of the hotel rooms, the staff and the cleanliness of the place. A real showpiece. And to send you on your way a beautifully cooked breakfast. What more could any one ask for? Better identification of room numbers on the key fob would be nice. Something which I am assured by staff that it is going to be acted upon very soon.
- Jamie (8/5): Beautiful gardens and a quaint manor - The hotel is perfectly situated between Windermere and Ambleside with ample parking. The grounds are lovely with gardens and paths around to enjoy. Comfortable bed and quiet space. I wish they had the food hours listed on the menu. They weren't listed so didn't know when needed to order dinner by
- davidlisah (10/5): World class experience, an exemplary place to stay. - We were given the 2 night break as a wedding present last October and we booked to stay there 16th & 17th Jan. From the outset the place was outstanding. The check in process was seamless and easy, the team member that checked us in explained everything and took us to the room, then showed us were the Restaurant and Bar were located.
The food was out of this world, even the bar snacks menu was brilliant. Everything we ate there was tasty and very well made, there is a lot of skill in that kitchen for sure! How it hasn't got a Michelin Star is beyond me.
The room was fabulous, extremely clean and very well laid out with superb comfort. There was even a jar of sweets in there, which was a lovely touch. We slept very well as the place was quiet and with a comfortable temperature.
There was one thing that stood out through our stay, and that was Daniel. He was truly excellent and the service he provided us was exemplary, such a great credit to the hotel.
Every aspect of our stay was well beyond our expectations, and I would say that the people, the accommodation and the food are all certainly world class. Rarely have we enjoyed a stay as we did this one. We will without doubt go back again for a few breaks.
- Nicola (9/5): -
- Charlotte (9/5): Lovely country hotel. - Great location! Feels exclusive but not too far from anything. Not too many rooms so never felt over busy. Plenty of ground to walk around and places inside to relax. At times it felt hard to find staff. There was a bell to ring and a staff member would come shortly but it would be nice to maybe have more of a staff presence. For example we sat in the lounge area one morning and didnāt see any staff for about 45mins.
- steve (9/5): Couldnāt fault any aspect of my stay, from staff to food was first rate. - Location is great. Staff couldnāt have been any more helpful and friendly. Dinner was superb and the whole experience was beyond expectations. Nothing

- Dani (10/5): Highlight of our trip; just gorgeous. A must stay! - Definitely a highlight of our trip. Such a gorgeous place; felt like we were in an episode of Downton Abbey or something. Our room had a beautiful view of the lake, and even though it was cold and rainy, the hotel was cosy, warm and inviting, and set up perfectly for the Christmas period. Lovely staff who made us feel very welcome. Would definitely stay there again.
- Hathaway (10/5): I will come back - I had an up-graded room, excellent
I have stayed at this hotel 3 times in the last six months and will come back
Staff very helpful and food good nothing
- Dawn (8/5): Nice chilled overnight stay - Nice clean rooms

- Debbie (10/5): Beautiful relaxing stay - An amazing hotel. Stunning inside. Comfortable big beds. Clean. Lovely helpful staff. Even the cleaner went out of her way to help us. I shall be back here as soon as possible. It was so relaxing. From the reception to the bar staff. To the cleaners.
Thank you for a lovely stay Every thing. I canāt fault a thing.
- Kayleigh (10/5): Wonderful stay - Beautiful hotel in a great location, lovely bar area with open fires and view of the lake and the grounds.
really friendly, helpful staff, room was spacious with a great view and an adorable welcome package for our dog. Room had tea/coffee making facilities and little jar of sweets, nice touch. No dislikes.
- Jo (8/5): - Lovely to have pet welcome packs
A nice touch It was very hot in the room and difficult to turn heater down.
- Keeley (8/5): A relaxing 2 day break with the family. - The location and a comfortable room.
- Judith (5/5): lacking in atmosphere - The room was large, nice comfortable bed and nice and warm
The breakfast was nice My friends and I are regular travellers to the Lakes and have stayed in a vareity of hotels and air b n'b s in the past. this was very much at the top of our price range but we were dissapointed at the total lack of atmosphere, the bar and public areas were unwelcoming, the barman not very welcoming. for the money we paid it was quite a let down compared to places weve stayed previously

- stephanie (10/5): Wonderful break, really refreshing and lovely to sit in front of an open fire relaxing after an amazing meal. - The team are great, fabulous hotel in a wonderful location . Food was amazing Zero
- Delia (7/5): Really pleasant - The location was great and the lounge areas were cosy, chilled and sociable. The staff were so friendly and happy to help. The menu wasn't as vegetarian/ vegan friendly as it could have been and potentially could have been more creative with options. Also I would have liked to have been able to order lighter food options later in the evening .
However, the food was great quality.
The rooms were fairly basic but ok. However one of the rooms was a little cold due to a radiator not working and the water not being that warm. However the staff did help by giving extra portable heaters.
- Marcus (10/5): A well placed hotel with good walking tours available with fine views. The gardens are all wonderfully well kept and so t - Very comfortable, clean and tidy with all staff being most helpful and efficient and also politely being friendly.
Excellent quality food with a good choice of wine. We had a very enjoyable dinner and breakfast. There was nothing to not like.
- iank983 (10/5): A perfect country house hotel with amazing views, great food and service. - Attended a wedding at his wonderful hotel and stayed three nights over the new year. We had to bring our dig with us and were allocated room 22 on the ground floor which was perfect as we had access to the gardens from the patio doors in our room. The room itself was a good size and very comfortable. The staff throughout the whole hotel were simply incredible. Cleaners, waiters, bar staff, reception. All of them were so friendly and treated us and out dog wonderfully, with nothing too much trouble. Wedding was amazing, food fantastic. Gardens and lake setting perfect. I really cannot fault this great place and cannot wait to go back.
- karl (10/5): great night away - everything nothing
- julie (10/5): -
- RICHARDSON (9/5): Nice Horel Stay - The place itself Nothing
- Audrey (8/5): A lovely retreat and hidden gem in the Lakes - The food is always excellent at The Cragwood!
Also the hotel employs friendly staff who give attentive service. I required a ground floor room owing to mobility issues but they only have 4 rooms on the ground floor so had a struggle with the stairs. The fires seem to less well kept that in the past and some furniture is looking shabby.
- Yvonne (10/5): -
- Tanya (10/5): Warm and welcoming - The rooms were a good size
The place was very well heated for such an old buildingā¦
Rooms very comfortable The public spaces were quite bare with no rugs down in most of the areas near the bar..
So looked a little basic and not upmarket.
Our breakfast room lacked character and mirrored an old folks home!!!!
Some furniture in the rooms were worn and ready for renovations.
Surprised to see a shower curtain!
