- Tour54299694388 (10/5): Hotel, where everything fits - The hotel is located between the city center and the markets, both within easy walking distance. There are numerous restaurants, bars, massage parlors and tattoo studios nearby. Nevertheless, the hotel is in a quiet location, no noise pollution, not even during the day. Everything is very well maintained, nothing is damaged or worn, everything is clean and in good condition. The room we had was in the lowest price category, very good, large double bed, everything important was available, safe, TV, air conditioning, everything worked. Bathroom relatively large, clean, well maintained. Usual toiletries available, sufficient hot water from the shower. Breakfast buffet for an extra charge, but highly recommended. Hot and cold dishes, good coffee, fruit, cakes, salads, several hot dishes. Free coffee, cake, bananas for guests until 11am, then all day. On the day of departure, luggage is deposited free of charge for a possible late departure, the hotel arranges an airport cab at a very reasonable price. All in all, our hotel stay was a great experience, it's nice when everything fits.

- Eleanor1986 (6/5): Great position - I thought the Hotel Montha was a really lovely hotel. It was decorated beautifully with an eye for detail. The staff on the reception desk were friendly and efficient. The breakfast was really, really good with a wide choice of fruits, yogurts etc and offered eggs cooked to order. The coffee was really good too. Coffee, fruit and cake was available all day at no extra cost. The only problem I had was that the bed was rock hard which was such a shame as it really rather puts me off returning. A comfortable bed is so important and the bed at the Montha certainly wasn't.

- singhasam (10/5): Great hotel. - THIS hotel just keeps getting better and better. It was already my hotel of choice in Chiang Mai when I last visited just before Covid. When I returned this time I found that the little German restaurant near the entrance had been taken over by the Montha which had turned it into its own superb breakfast area. There was everything from hot bacon and sausages to yoghurt, fresh fruit and juice, bread, a choice of cold meats, several cereals, tea and coffee and an attached kitchen in which staff would make guests everything from omelettes to eggs how you wanted them. I also liked the way dishes were taken away quickly while any food showing signs of being used up was speedily refreshed Inside the hotel is the same attention to detail seen in the restaurant. Free computer use in the foyer, free chilled water, large area of leaflets on attractions and very helpful reception staff. My room was a real pleasure to stay in. A clothes rail with hangers, a very good room safe with a six figure combination which was easy to use, multiple power points and a light system which ensured that when you retired to sleep you could switch the last lights off without getting out of bed. A real asset was the flat storage surface which stretched right down one wall. It made it possible to lay clothes out for the next day, to open out maps to look at them while seated and to store shoulder bags, shopping bags, water bottles and similar things off to one side out of the way. The bed itself was so comfortable that I had some of the best nights of my entire holiday here while the bathroom was excellent. It had a separate shower area, a large mirrored wall with a long thin shelf in front of it and crisp fresh towels. Crucially the staff in charge of cleaning my room did a top job every time, replacing towels, making the bed, replacing toilet rolls, emptying bins and tidying up. I couldn't fault the job they did. All in all this is a hotel at the top of its game where top quality service is delivered with a smile. I have no hesitation in recommending anyone to give the Hotel Montha a try and I will be back.
- James (8/5): Cheap and cheerful - a good hotel! - We stayed at the Montha for 4 nights as part of a tour of Thailand and this was a great place to stay for Chiang Mai. The hotel is well situated for the night market (less than 10-minute walk) and for the main city (less than 15-minute walk). It is a quieter hotel because it’s off the main road and this is a big advantage in the buzzing city. The convenience of walking everywhere was a big plus! The Montha hotel itself was good and benefits from friendly and helpful staff, good facilities (the gym and lounge are great additions), a super laundry service and a clean environment. It was a lovely place to be and for this, we were happy to have chosen it. We couldn’t give it 5 stars because a couple of small issues; the beds are very hard but this was helped by a good mattress topper that was added on the 3rd day (we strategically went without room cleaning for the last 2 days to keep it but realised we could just ask for it next time!) and the bathroom we had was not the same standard as the one shown on the Hotels.com listing, which was a little disappointing. However, all in all, it was a good hotel and is still one I’d recommend with the advice to ask for a mattress topper and a warning that the bathroom might not quite be what you thought it was!

The room was spacious, had a great layout with a balcony, and they've thought of everything you could possibly need. Lots of desk space, fridge, kettle, toiletries, hairdryer. Called from Vietnam to reserve room, and spoke to Nai, manager at front desk. Easy to reserve. Fabulous. Delicious nutritious breakfast, good selection. Housekeeping does a fabulous job cleaning and tidying rooms and facility. Many rooms have balconies; some have patio. Staff work hard to be helpful. Large bottles of water provided. Super location. Quiet street, 10 minute walk to Night Bazaar; 10 minute walk to Thaphae Gate.

- Alwehsh (8/5): Decent, value hotel - Positives: -Safe -Fridge -AC -Fan -Room is clean -No bugs like mosquitos or ants in the room. Decent location right off Loi Kroh Road -10 minute walk to Ta Phae Gate and the Night Market in either direction. Negatives: -Room walls are paper thin, you can hear other guests, especially when doors are open and closed at night. -Requested a taxi to the airport from the hotel and was overcharged by 1.5 times what they originally said and what Bolt was quoting (no Bolt drivers were available). Overall, it’s a good value hotel if you are paying under $15 a night. Chiang Mai has a ton of similarly priced rooms throughout the city.

- Janitron (8/5): Good location and a nice stay - Overall, Hotel Montha is a perfectly fine hotel, and I'd probably stay again if I'm back in Chiang Mai. The location is pretty good, and as others have said, the breakfast/lunch voucher for the German restaurant next door is a great deal (though quite heavy!). The staff was friendly and helpful in calling me a Grab taxi and handling some laundry after I spilled Khao Soi all over myself. I do have to mention though that what others have said about roosters and noise in the wee hours of the morning is quite true. While I grew more accustomed to it after a few days, it was incredibly hard sleeping the first night. I don't think the rooster issue is enough to stop me from coming back, but I definitely recommend wearing ear plugs!

I reported this when we checked out with an understanding that they hear this all the time however change is unlikely. Sorry Montha. I cannot do it again.
- Zelda008 (2/5): Roosters Howling 3:15 Every Morning - Roosters by the hotel started howling at 3:15 every morning. And they keep howling hour by hour. Don’t try to get any sleep when they started. I went to the lobby to ask if the hotel can do anything to help. The reception girl on the night shift asked me “why you book this hotel then?” …… (Shocked by her attitude)……😢If only I knew earlier. The pillow is very uncomfortable. Feel itchy when lying down on the bed. Prostitutes and lots of old men surrounded.

There is a chicken farm next door and the roosters start to crow at three in the morning, long before sunrise, and they don't stop until nine or ten. The beds and pillows are uncomfortable so we had a hard time falling asleep as well. There are many other cheap hotels in the area so don't try to save money by coming here.

Canadian beavers do not need to book and totally lost he plot visiting foreign countries and towns. Ever woken up but noisy street traffic, disco, scraping chairs etc.? Lovely farm rooster to wake up on a hard bed - you want soft beds? Go somewhere else. Staff friendly, shared coffee / tea facilities and a fridge full of drinks for sale. And best of all it’s close to the airport and walking all the way to the bazaar, food stalls, temples, etc. Girlie bars? Heehhehehe........

- akdetb (10/5): Excellent Value - This hotel is a gem. Close to markets, restaurants & Old City. Staff are friendly and helpful, especially the lovely Yu. As an elderly female travelling alone, I felt very safe & at home at Montha. The German restaurant is great value and the food choices very extensive. The restaurant owner is so nice and obliging. Yes, the bed is hard. This is Thailand. The pillows soft. So good for a great night sleep. There is no coffee/tea making facilities in one's room but the foyer has a coffee station where you can make a hot drink, and sit there to enjoy it with a couple of the scrumptious comp-limentary biscuits. Rooms are roomy and kept immaculate. I found the hanging space was ample for my requirements. My first stay at this hotel. Definitely not my last. Montha Hotel is highly recommended.

- Travelbuzzblogger (2/5): BRUTAL EXPERIENCE - I think a lot of the good reviews are from hotel employees and friends, they are totally unbelievable. The beds are TERRIBLE, harder than the ground and old. There is a rooster farm beside the hotel, the roosters start howling at 345 am and don't stop till net day afternoon, even earplugs don;t help. Only one electric plug in the entire room, nothing in the bathroom to use hair appliances, we had to take turns to charge cell phones and laptops. Neighborhood is full of prostitutes and old men seeking them. Front desk ladies were extremely sweet and tried to be helpful given the situation.

- singhasam (8/5): Great base for a holiday - FEW hotels welcome their guests with one life-size cow by the entrance and another on a first floor balcony. The eye-catching effect shows a willingness to think away from convention but the Montha – which is run with the efficiency of a Swiss watch -- still has plenty of the usual comforts to reinforce its reputation as a great base for a holiday in Chiang Mai. Day and night staff were unswervingly helpful and my room and bathroom were immaculately clean with a very large and extremely comfortable bed and all the little things tourists like. These ranged from a hairdryer, a six-digit room safe and a writing area to shampoo, conditioner, soap, water glasses in the main bedroom and the bathroom and a fantastically efficient and very quiet air conditioning unit. So why am I awarding the Montha a “very good” instead of an “excellent”? My reasons are twofold. Firstly, when I previously reviewed the Montha a year and a half ago I was critical that the only clothes storage in the entire room was a little wall-mounted metal strip with four holes in it for coathangers. Nothing has changed since April 2018 and my latest visit still forced me to lay a lot of clothing including most of my shirts out on a flat concrete surface stretching along one wall. All my pants, socks and a few shorts and shirts never left my suitcase. Clearly management may read reviews but that doesn’t mean it will act on criticism. In fairness, my second reason for only awarding a “very good” may be beyond even a willing management to do anything about. That is because every one of my 17 nights at the hotel was interrupted from 4pm onwards by the persistent and loud crowing of several cockerels. I never heard them on my previous visit because my room faced an overgrown “garden” area, but this time around I was on the other side of the hotel facing buildings in or near which the cockerels seemed to be housed. Ironically I got used to the pesky poultry and even found them useful for waking me to get ready for very early morning trips, but as a general rule I found them irritating and mentioned it to staff who said they would report it. Don’t know if anything can be done about such a natural noise which is totally unconnected to the hotel, but potential visitors who don’t want sleep disturbed by loud crowing should ask for a room on the right side of the hotel facing the “garden” area. Even with such noise I would still have no hesitation in coming back because everything else is so good. The foyer boasts comfortable seating, an area for coffee and even a free use computer to keep up to date on world news, emails etc. There is no lift but I had no trouble as my room was on the second floor while staff kindly made a luggage room available to store my bag and suitcase when I checked out ahead of going to the airport. The Montha itself is a ten-minute walk from several night markets and the Iron Bridge on the Ping River to the east while a similar length walk will take you towards the Thae Pae Gate and the Old City with its temples and warren of twisting streets to explore. Easily available tuk tuk or Songthaew transport can take the sting out of walking in 33C temperatures and the hotel provides a free city street map to help orientate visitors. All in all I’d definitely recommend a stay at the Montha to anyone looking for a good reliable base for their holiday in Chiang Mai. I just hope a little more hanger space can be installed together with a little less dawn crowing so I can upgrade my next Montha review to “excellent”.
- StefRoh (10/5): Excellent choice, I'll be back - Clean, modern and comfortable room with a Swiss theme. The large bed was so comfy, it was hard to leave. I had a room to the back with a balcony. The sliding door had a well during bug screen, so I didn't even need the air-conditioning at night. I was able to enjoy the "jungle noises" from the green area behind the hotel instead. Staff is helpful, competent and friendly. There's a cute German restaurant on the premises providing a great value breakfast/lunch buffet. The hotel is my definite choice for return visits to Chiang Mai!

- NICHOLAS (10/5): Highly recommend! - Fantastic hotel for the price (and it is on a quiet street). I stayed in the double room with a balcony that had a nice view - the hotel is clean and in great condition - nice bathroom and fast WiFi also English TV options. There is a huge German buffet breakfast for only 100 baht which made for a nice change from all the Thai food we ate. Highly recommend Hotel Montha and would definitely stay again!

The hotel offers a discounted price for breakfast which is always a plus for anyone on vacation. The room was very clean, probably the cleanest place we stayed at in all of Northern Thailand in this price range. The balcony was pretty big so we absolutely loved that. The beds were a little hard but nothing you can’t live with. The front desk people were extremely nice and accommodating. Tons of food options in walking distance.

- Jacob (8/5): Get the German Breakfast Buffet - It was in a great location close to the night bazaar. The hotel was very clean, and the breakfast buffet was great and definitely worth 100 THB. The bed was a little stiff but that should be expected anywhere you stay in Thailand.

- R James (10/5): Great home base. - This is an amazing hotel for the price! Modern and well run, close to the action and old town. The only concern is the rather firm beds. Livable but really firm. We were there for over a week, it was an excellent place to use as a home base.
- jeanYves (8/5): - The location was great ...although at th beginning when I arrived and didn’t know the place I was wondering of my choice, I got 3 different room booked ... the balcony room are worth only iyou have the one finishing by 00 01 or 02 other wise you face a building 20 foot in front and not pleasant to look at... the one with out balcony was really open and enjoyable view. For the price you can not really complain . Clean even if towels are sometimes dated a bit and the staff is really great...I would recommend this hotel and for the budjet they charge even more reason to do so... Reslly good basic quality hotel in a good location... even if you may wonder when the taxi drop you when you will first arrive... Don’t worry ;)

Overall a great location - Value for money - Good WiFi - I have been to Chiang Mai over 20 times in past 10 years & rate Montha Hotel the BEST Budget Hotel in Chiang Mai at the moment. Already book another 4 weeks at Montha Hotel for August 2018.
- Joanne (10/5): Great Location and Excellent Service - Hotel is nothing fancy but meets your basic needs. Shower was a good strength and hot water. Beds are very hard but we did get used to them. The front desk staff are excellent and very helpful. We arranged both tours and taxis through them. They also sold ice cold beer at a reasonable price which we enjoyed after touring around in the heat. They also provided bananas, water and coffee for free in the lobby every morning. We initially stayed for 4 nights and then returned for 1 more night on our way to Phuket from Pai. Location is perfect. Close to lots of restaurants of all kind, but away from the noise. About an 8 minute walk to either the night market or in the other direction to the old town in the moated area. Would definitely stay there again if we were ever to return to Chiang Mai. A few minute walk away is a great place for a western (English) breakfast called The Country Inn.

The night market has tons to buy and loads to eat. Parking lot is across the street. We hired a motorbike through the hotel and the only issue we had was that it wasn't the right model that I chose. It was okay though because the CC was the same anyways but wished that we got what we requested for. The rooms do have ants crawling on the table so beware of that. There are no elevators in the hotel nor do they have telephones as well. The cows in front were very interesting. Other than that, this hotel is fantastic if you're staying a couple of days and on a budget.
