Guest Reviews
- Jacqualine (7/5): - Lovely environment. Staff were very willing and pleasant. The meals were simple and tasty. Property feels slightly neglected. Pool was not clean.
- Jaques (7/5): Lovely place but only food and relaxing vibes where worth it I prefer a Africamps - Deep in the bush gives a feeling of disconnect from the world
The food is out of this world amazing I had the ostrich steak first night and it was perfect Tent is a bit run down
Toilet flushed like it’s blocked
Floor is very noisey
Outside lounging isn’t comfortable
Intet
- shatadi (1/5): - Nothing really The pictures are not like what you will get, the rooms are not up to standard. The place is falling apart
- Muller (4/5): Bit of a dissapointment - The tents are nicely spaced apart that gives nice privacy I have stayed in better safari tents that cost me much less than this. For the price we expected far more
- Hellobunde (8/5): Nice place to stay. - An adorable place near Kruger NP.
A warm welcome when we arrived and all the help with the luggage.
The tents have lots of private, except for the monkeys (they break in in your room and eat all your cookies, chips an sweets, so leave that in your car).
Wild animals walking throughout the camp (zebra's giraffes, impala's).
Very good breakfast and dinner, especially the dinner on the second night around the campfire and under the stars....amazing!
The bush walk with Devin is very interesting with lots of information about the area.
And last but not least......in winter it gets cold during the night but luckily a hot water jug is placed in your bed.
- Explorer01498806822 (10/5): The true Ngama experience - What an experience. If you want to take your glamping to the next level then please carry on reading.
On arrival Millicent greeted us with the best smile we have ever seen. And offered us welcome drinks.
Shortly after we were escorted to our tent. It is a place to chill with some extra features, if you know what I mean. Outside shower, bath that can be seen from the bed. Nothing more, nothing less.
Let me tell you where the true experience kicks in. The staff are the most helpful and friendliest we have ever experienced.
The food, my God!! Thank you Nomvulo and Wendy for cooking the best representation of African cuisine. Gordan Ramsey can come learn a thing or two from you. And best part, you can have seconds. The kicker, you get breakfast too!!
Now wait for this, we go on a game drive with Tanya. She has 10 years of ranger experience and boy oh boy does it show. She explained everything from how the soil gets it’s nutrients to termite colonies. How trees can change scent, next moment she started tracking animals and before you know it we were on wild dogs chasing after a leopard with it’s kill.
Not long and she spots a leopard in the thick of the bush, did you read that, we saw a freggin leopard in the 700 hectare camp we sleep in a tent in.
If you are a lover of nature and love the call of an Hyena at 3am, a Bushbaby screaming at midnight, bush buck strolling past while you shower, and monkeys galavanting on your roof then book a stay, and book a game drive with Tanya.
Our stay will not be forgotten thanks Ngama lodge for a damn riveting stay!!!
- JudyMetroNYCarea (4/5): An unfortunate choice for a tented safari experience - It pains me to write this review. This was to be the highlight of our visit to South Africa. Of our entire itinerary, this was the first place we booked because we felt it to be the most important part of the trip. We expected a glamping experience based on the photos and reviews. So sadly disappointed.
The last review seems to be more than a year ago and apparently a lot has changed, or rather, nothing has been changed, cleaned or updated since the last review.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by Millicent, who was very lovely and soft spoken. She provided light refreshments and then walked us to our tents.
It was an immediate disappointment when seeing the tent. Dirty & Stained canvas (especially the top), ripped mosquito netting (why bother when it has holes), uneven floor boards with the stain worn off, bathtub was dirty (would not even think about using the tub) and bathroom (toilet) just as basic as could be and full of bugs and ants. This is off-grid shabby style camping, not glamping.
The first evening dinner which was held outside looked to be romantic or at least comfortable. However, there was not enough lighting on the food display or the tables, which just made for an uncomfortable dining experience. Thankfully the weather on last day forced the dinner inside under the main tent. At least then we could see what we were eating.
This is a very small lodge and they do not have their own guides for the game drives. They outsourced to other lodges or contracted guides. We were lucky to have 2 decent game drives but the full day game drive in Kruger was another disappointment. The guide was terrible and spent the entire day on her phone checking her text messages for her chef job. She clearly had better things to do than be with us.
There is only wifi at the main tent (where the reception & dining space is). So once you are in your tent for the night, that's it. No wifi for you, which is just being cheap on their part.
The pool is big enough for 3 people, certainly not big enough for the amount of tents they have. The filter was off for most of the day and when we returned from a very hot bush walk, the pool water was not clean. I could see little worms at the bottom of the pool. Many of the floor boards around the pool were loose and in bad condition.
They are located in a reserve that is fenced off from Kruger so don't expect to see lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards on the property. Only animals around the tents were birds, turtles and a few reptiles near the water.
The food was very good. A nice variety and some local dishes were delicious. It was probably the highlight of the 3 days.
Devin, the owner, and the rest of the staff were very nice and pleasant to talk you and very accommodating. However, the condition of the camp, including the tents, walkways and pool do not justify the cost per night. The entire camp needs an overhaul.
- Julie (10/5): - Beautiful and peaceful. Awesome staff. Definitely recommend.
- 646leishab (8/5): Last minute kruger trip - Blessing and the other ladies made our stay excellent and is because of them that we give 4 stars. So helpful and going the extra mile like making a gorgeous boma dinner even though we were the only guests. The food was delicious and the choices really good. The only down side was the actual tent. Very run down...There is a lot of renovation needed around the property and we can see the effects of covid. We feel that a proper heater and an electric blanket could also assist guests in winter.
- malup928 (10/5): Amazing unforgettable stay!!! - We had a splendid 3-day stay at this amazing luxury tented safari lodge. Exactly what we were looking for! The feel of being in the bush and yet so relaxing and comfortable. The bush surroundings, good care, and wildlife activities made it all perfect!
The tent with the bathtub was amazing! Very tastefully decorated with all the comfort and using natural toiletry products.
The staff prepared amazing meals for us! The packed breakfast was superb for our day tour at Kruger National Park. Devin, our host and guide, took all the time to drive us around, there was no rush, taking time to watch the beautiful animals and absorb nature. This was the highlight of our activities - from sunrise to sundown!!! After a long day, we were treated to an amazing dinner at the boma under the twinkling stars and waning moon. It was magical!
Apart from Kruger, the game drive, morning bush walk, and the Blyde River Canyon boat cruise, completed our long-weekend experience!
Thanks, Devin, for hosting us and guiding us around. You are such a great host who went out of your way to give us an unforgettable experience. You are an excellent guide - your knowledge about the bush and wildlife conservation are admirable.
We wish you all the best for Ngama and who knows, maybe, see you next time again!!!!
Words can't express how grateful we are for this amazing experience! Many many THANKS, Devin and Ngama staff!!!
- mariannas809 (10/5): The best spoil for our 40th Wedding Anniversary - The real bush experience!
Excellent staff, and food!
Romantic atmosphere, surrounded by African bush sounds
Devin is a very friendly and experienced host!
Everything you need for a bush break!!!
Rassie & Marianna
- tzendzeg (10/5): Two lovely days - Thank you for two lovely days. Devin and Blessing were perfect hosts. The food was delicious and the bush massages divine. Combining our luxury stay with a few days in the nearby Kruger made for a perfect anniversary getaway. Ben & Mari
- DavidH13515 (10/5): Wonderful stay! - A central lodge surrounded by power and water equipped tented room facilities. The rooms are rustic and that adds to the character! Outstanding staff, great food, and relaxed and friendly facilities. We went for a week and stayed for 10 days! Devin gave us expert guidance around Kruger Park and some of the private reserves, taught us a lot about the animals and their habits, and we got some stunning wildlife photos of the Big 5 and many many more exotic creatures. Best vacation we have ever had, and we will definitely be back!
- ShotLeftFanatic (10/5): One I'm not likely to forget - To say Ngama Tented Safari Loge exceeded all our expectations would be an understatement. Every single bit of detail was amazing, amazing, amazing. From the early morning guided bush walk, to the daily surprise visit from the gorgeous giraffe, to the private picnic, private dinner at the Boma; and not forgetting the consistently delectable meals.
- Kilindrie (10/5): Relaxing and tranquil getaway - From the entrance, you are greeted by welcoming staff who aim to serve and accommodate your requests.
The food was delicious and menu's were tailored to cater to our dietary requirements.
Upon returning from dinner on our first night we had a surprise turndown waiting in our room, with candles around a filled bathtub and a bottle of campaign. This was just one of the many instances where the staff go above and beyond to make your stay memorable.
We highly recommend that you book the following:
- The guided bush walk, nothing compares to standing next to a Giraffe and appreciating the beauty of nature. Devin was an amazing guide who is well versed in both flora and fauna.
- The private picnic, secluded from the resort, the set up overlooks a beautiful water hole. During our picnic we had a herd of about 10 Zebra's who were grazing next to us.
- The couples massage, pure bliss, and absolutely relaxing. Blessing has patience and skill and will work out all the knocks in your back.
- private dinner, beats any reservation in a crowded restaurant and allows you the time to be alone.
Overall we had an excellent unforgettable experience.
Be prepared to soak in nature and get lost in the beauty of quietness.
- Elize44 (10/5): Peace for the soul! - I want to start off by saying I did expect more. Maybe my expectations were just too high, but then again it was a fabulous and unforgettable weekend to celebrate both my husband's and my birthdays.
The road signs are perfectly adequate and we didn't struggle to find the place at all. Blessing came out of the lodge to welcome us and we had some refreshing ice tea to enjoy while filling out all the forms for COVID-19.
It was raining on and off and we were supposed to have our private dinner on our little patio the 1st evening at 19:00. We didn't know whether they were still coming to serve us at the tent or if they are going to move the table inside so we waited. At 19:10 we eventually decided to walk up to the main dining area where we were informed that we will be dining there instead. At that stage it was not raining.
Although I can understand that their arrangements were also thrown off by the rain, surely it is not the 1st time that they have experienced such and it would have been nice to have been informed prior to 19:00 about the change of plans. It was a bit of a let-down.
Dinner however was superb and compliments to the chef, definitely! Just be mindful though that the drinks are on the pricey side and the selection is limited. There are for example no non-alcoholic drinks other than cold drinks and coffee or tea.
During Friday evening there were music pumping somewhere in the vicinity and it was definitely detracting from the peace and quiet and the bush sounds. It eventually stopped at 07:00 the Saturday morning.
The bush walk the Saturday morning with Devin was unforgettable! He is a great guide and we tracked the wild dogs that were in the area but we missed them unfortunately. Don't lie in, even if you are tempted because it is really a great experience.
We also had a picnic planned but again I was a bit disappointed. I assumed it would be for lunch (my bad) but was informed after our walk that it was actually a breakfast picnic but that due to the rain it would not be possible. And since they had another couple's picnic planned for lunch, maybe we could do sundowners at the picnic spot. Well we didn't go, mainly because we did not know where the picnic spot was or whether we could still go and do sundowners. I just feel they could have done more - even have it in the tent or something. Not just to leave it. I really looked forward to it and maybe that's why I am a bit upset about it.
The afternoon we had massages and it was perfect. Just mind though that they do not do the massages in a separate tent as advertised but rather have a mobile massage bed which they bring to your own tent and it is done there. And they don't skimp on the time either, if it says 30 minutes you will get your full 30 minute massage.
Dinner was superb! It was set up in the boma area and the food again was super delicious, the atmosphere with all the lamps great and all round 5-star!
The plunge pool is very small. There were 2 people in the pool the Friday afternoon and it would have been awkward to get in the pool with them. And since they were smoking in the pool as well, for us and non-smokers, it was unpleasant.
The tents are beautiful and dreamy! This was everything they said it would be. The linen is good quality, the outside shower a real treat and the bathroom products they provide wonderful (I even bought some of the foam bath) and the food superb! The peace and quiet truly soaked into your soul. And the romantic turndown truly romantic and very special.
None of the things that were bothersome detracted from how special the weekend was and how beautiful it is at Ngama. I would definitely recommend them to anyone that wants to get away from it all to soak in the peace and quiet of nature and to be pampered on the side.
- wiesdawg (10/5): Value for Money Getaway in the bush! - I must say the two things that stood out the most from our stay at Ngama Tented Safari Lodge, is how friendly the staff are and how well organised the lodge is. Very few accommodation places can say they tick all the boxes when it comes to doing the basics right. Food exceeded our expectations and the wildlife that surrounds the lodge is quite a sight to behold.
Definitely would recommend a break away to Ngama Tented Safari Lodge.
- Superdave2104 (10/5): What a weekend away!!! Blessed - If ever you what to take a break, leave the city life behind, relax and have a romantic time away, please don't think twice to book with Ngama Safari tented lodge... This place and staff will not disappoint your expectations, not for one second. Thank you to Devin and staff, for the best weekend away in a long long time... The picnic breakfast was the cherry on top.
- Travelbugkzn (10/5): Absolute peace and tranquility! - My recent stay at Ngama Tented Safari Lodge was nothing short of perfection. The service, accommodation, food, ambiance, attention to detail was 5 star. The establishment arranged a guided morning walk through the reserve as well as a secluded and romantic picnic spot overlooking a watering hole for lunch. On one of the nights, dinner was served outside our tent in complete privacy and we heard and then saw buck and warthog rustle through he bush. Was amazing! I would most certainly recommend this establishment if you are looking for a complete retreat from the hustle and bustle of our crazy lives. The added advantage is that it is a short drive away from the Orpen Gate going into the Kruger National Park which you could go to for a few hours if you would like.
Well done Devin and Team! Keep up the fantastic service. I am looking forward to my next trip already:)
- joacobry (10/5): Blessed Paradise Plus - Like if there was not enough with the endlessly beautiful African bush, the calming animal life, the interesting habitat of nature, here come &Beyond staff and make it even better. Whether it is the delicious food, the comforting drinks or the deep knowledge of rangers and helpers, you will spend days and wish it would never end. Superb!
- gawie2015 (10/5): The staff is very friendly and the food was excellent - The room is comfortable, neat an had everything we needed. It was my birthday weekend and the staff and owner went above and beyond to make it special. Had a bush walk on Saturday morning. Was informative and refreshing.
- PBYLincs (10/5): Amazing lodges with friendly attentive staff. Devin is the ultimate host! - Stayed with 5 other ladies (brought together through Soul Safari with Jacquie Gauthier) for a 10 night stay. A great base for our variety of trips and experiences.
Pre arrival communication about the lodge was with Kim (owner with husband Devin). Responses were prompt and pleasant - more than happy to answer any questions with excellent guidance for first timers.
Devin collected me (sole traveller) from Johannesburg airport then collected the rest of the group from a nearby hotel. Devin was happy to answer all our many questions and was a wealth of information across a broad range of subjects.
A comfortable 4 hour minibus transfer was broken up by a stop at great services - having an array of local wild animals as well as good refreshment facilities and further stop for lunch at Harries Pancake House in Dullstroom. Yummy!
A warm welcome awaited us at the lodge from Blessings (you are such a lovely lady) and all the team. Beautiful rooms (tented lodges) - immaculately clean with natural toiletries. Comfortable beds. Outdoor seating area for each lodge as well as comfortable communal decking areas, plunge pool, under cover lounge and indoor dining area. A lovely relaxed feeling about the whole place.
The outdoor shower is an amazing experience (don't worry, it's still private!).
Food - a good mix and plenty of it. Great breakfasts too! Super picnic meals provided when out at meal times. Our package included drinks with meals - a choice of beer or local very drinkable wine.
Had several evening meals in the BOMA - a wonderful experience eating in this outdoor lantern-lit British Officer's Mess Area.
Nothing was too much trouble - all the staff wanted you to have an amazing stay - and we did!
Devin was our main guide and driver throughout our trip and again, nothing was ever too much trouble. He went out of his way to ensure that we had the most amazing holiday. Our safari transport was an 11 seater safari truck - comfortable and made for the terrain but do take a jumper / windcheater as with open sides, the wind rush can be chilly - although there were snuggly blankets provided!
Places to visit / things to do:
- Bush walks (early mornings around the lodge). Meet the locals (animals) minding their own business - we got to see giraffes drinking at the water hole and a baby giraffe practising along side as well as zebra and Impala daily.
- Blyde Cannon. Boat trip, beautiful scenery, great folklore story and hippos too!
- Kruger Park. Just the best day out! Go with Devin, he has so much passion and knowledge for the animals and the natural landscape - again nothing too much trouble. We all had loads of time to absorb the experience of seeing the animals up close, switching off the truck engine to give us the best chance to get amazing photos.
NB: avoid the so called 'Ferrari Safari' - these are ones that just whizz you round the park with little time to absorb the surroundings or get that special photograph.
- Mariepskop Nature Reserve. Stunning views for miles! Worth the rough road climb in the jeep. All part of the experience!
- Nyani Cultural Village. High energy dance and story telling show. Have your photo taken with their resident Wart Hog - she's a beauty!
- Nourish Eco Village. A not for profit organisation doing amazing work supporting the local community through education and empowerment.
- Greater Kruger Hotel School - cookery class which was great fun and you get to eat what you cook.
- Bourke's Luck Potholes. Amazing rock formations. (visited on way back to airport)
I had an amazing time and would go back to Ngama in a heartbeat!
- Lennart (10/5): Very nice lodge, close to the nature! - We really enjoyed staying at this lodge! Great service and a genuine place. Nice to see giraffes and Zebras just outside your door. We also enjoyed the night drive with Devin, although not so many animals this time, but that was compensated when we did the bush walk in the morning and saw 11 wild dogs.
- suet274 (10/5): Simply the best - We were a group of 12 and were lucky enough to have the lodge to ourselves. Devin met us in Johannesburg and transferred us to the lodge. The tents were very comfortable with huge 4 poster beds, indoor and outdoor showers, coffee and tea facilities. There was a balcony off the side of the tent where we could sit and watch the zebras and other wildlife come and visit. The meals provided were fantastic with a large variety of local dishes. The malva cake was the best. Devin and his staff went out of their way to make our stay memorable. I would highly recommend this lodge for anyone wanting to experience Africa and its wonderful wildlife.
- SSKrypteia (10/5): Amazing - Stayed here for 5 days with 11 others. We had an amazing time. Devin (the owner) was incredibly helpful and informative. The food was great! We had the opportunity to try various South African dishes (the Malva pudding is incredible). The accommodation was beautiful. Theres something really special about waking up and seeing a giraffe, Zebra, Warthog or band of monkeys 20 metres away. I also highly recommend using the outdoor shower (don't worry it's still private). The activities are great: We did a night safari (bring warm clothes if it's winter), two safaris in Manyeleti, a morning walk, we visited moholoholo (definitely worth it) and an afternoon picnic near a watering hole. All were great. I highly recommend this place. Amazing!
- IsabelG2016 (10/5): Fantastic bush house and very frendly staff - We stayed at the bush house of Ngama Lodge, it is a fantastic accommodation with lots of space and decorated with charm. It has a magnificent porch, private pool and magnificent views.
We enjoyed a day in the Kruguer park organized by themselves, the guide picked us up and took us to the park where we could see the "big 5". The guide was super attentive and very friendly. The breakfast picnic was incredible and very well prepared by him.
We spend another day on the Blyde Canyon, it was very easy to go from Ngama.
We also enjoyed an organized dinner outdoors, around the fire in a very cozy atmosphere.
When I come back to South Africa I will definitely stay in Ngama again. Thanks a lot!!
- Paul (10/5): - From check in to check out this was a fabulous stay. Food was amazing and served in the wonderful Boma area. Devin as host was great, incredibly knowledgeable about the local fauna and flora and also great with ideas for local trips. Brilliant morning walk before moving on. We had 2 nights here chilling before headinginto kruger and would recommend it to anyone.
