Guest Reviews
- Melissa (2/5): - We couldn't even get outside, the door wouldn't open from inside!! Our roo. Didn't get get cleaned so therefore we didn't get no towels, wash rags or shampoo, the telephone didn't even have a cord on it to call downstairs. Which we told the guy when he came up to fix the door bout door wouldn't lock !! And the heater smell like it's burning so don't turn it on!! Motorcycles starting up the bikes just to listen to them at midnight or 1 am & 6 am while they are smoking!!!!! Worst hotel ever!!!!!
- Robert (4/5): - The room was okay.
The hall was drab and not inviting poorly kept
The lobby was nice
- melody (2/5): - Tolit did not work room had a smell no towels
- Pamela (2/5): - VERY UNCOMFORTABLE
- Pamela (2/5): - Close the hotel down until the remodeling is finished Tub and shower runs at one time, bad plumbing. Crickets in the AC chirping all night and jumping through your room. Service is scarce. NO POOL, IT SHOULD HAVE STAYED "SOUTHGATE TIKI BAR and LOUNGE HOTEL...WE MISS YOU SUSAN
- Glenn (4/5): - Red Roof Inn's always have a certain value since they do not serve breakfast, but in this case, although less expensive, the property condition is was questionable.
They recently have remodeled the rooms, but they are quite sterile in appearance although in reasonable condition. They chose not to upgrade the bathrooms nor windows making the overall room condition not great. The first room given had non-working outlets and lights. The second room given had an *extremely* noisy AC/heater unit (the location of the property and property itself is quite quiet when the unit was off), plus the bathroom outlets were loose and would come out of the wall. There is no exhaust ventilation and the rooms have a plastic smell from the new flooring/furniture, plus humidity builds up (there are bath vents but the building fan that should be exhausting was obviously not working). The exit closest to the room had a magnetic lock that would not release when trying to exit (which is a very significant life safety hazard)
Ultimately, all these issues are obvious, but ignored. They need to bring in professional property management and address these issues asap if they expect to stay in business.
- Fernando (6/5): - No parking lot drinking, fix pool and clean better. Fix doors and rooms
- Brad (6/5): No pool - It was acceptable. Bed and room were clean. No breakfast or pool
- Sarena jo (10/5): - I love everything about this hotel the rooms are so nice and cozy definitely safe environment and it's the perfect hotel for a getaway
- Stacy (6/5): - The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. I would rate that in itself a five. I gave the overall rating a 3 because it was listed with a pool which was not working and will need to be fixed before it is operational. The clerk at check in explained that they had only converted to the Red Roof Inn over the last year and hadn't got around to fixing the pool yet. Also hope they will find a new wifi company since Spectrum is terrible. I would stay again once the pool was operational. I really was impressed with their staff and the price of the room I got was a decent price for a room in the high travel season.
- Pam (6/5): - Hair in the bathtub and dirty on the counter in the bathroom. Not bad for the price.
- Greg (6/5): Disappointed no Lounge or Pool - We have been staying at this hotel for years. Now that Red Roof took over we would be better off at another hotel. The Tiki Lounge is Closed. And after an all day motorcycle ride in 92 degree heat The POOL IS OUT OF SERVICE. What the heck the lounge and pool and the family that ran the place made it better than the other places in the area. Don’t know if we will be back
- Brian (4/5): Old hotel building with cheap updates! - This is an old hotel building that was recently updated and a name change. The bed was terrible, only one trash can in the room. The ac unit was very loud and squeaky. Theres only one ice machine in the whole building and it was on the other side of the building. Our room key stopped working, then we couldn't find anyone at the front desk. We had to walk around the building until we found someone.
- Dakota (8/5): - Stayed in room 128, sink had issues draining making shaving problematic. Beds are slightly uncomfortable if you have back issues.
Otherwise, the night stay was fine enough.
- Greg (8/5): Now a red roof inn. GET THE BAR OPEN - The 2 big reasons I always book at this hotel is the bar and the family that owned it. The bar was closed till sometime halfway through summer and red roof inn owns it now. The rooms have been redone and are very clean and nice. It’s an old building so there’s only so much a renovation can do. But they have done a good job. Coffee in the lobby would be nice. We will be back several times this summer
- Steven (2/5): Not safe, not clean - The room was not very clean. There was toothpaste on the bathroom floor, McDonald’s trash by the bed, and crumbs everywhere. They were dog friendly which is why we chose this property. The booking page listed a dog run. It was a fenced in court yard not a dog run. I took my dogs out and a random man followed me around the building wanting me to give him my key so he could get in the building. There was also a man sleeping in the grass all night just outside the exit. I did not feel safe.
- Scott (10/5): - This place is improved greatly since the last time I was here the lobby is much cleaner and the rooms are much nicer.
- Brea (10/5): - Great stay, we liked the old fashioned look.
- Chris (2/5): Safer sleeping in your car instead of at this dump - The entrance way on the backside of the building and the hallway stunk. The entrance door and the room door didn’t shut all the way so anyone could just walk in. The room was disgusting. Lint on the vent in the bathroom. Dead bugs in the toilet. Checked the mattress. Bed bugs on the box springs dog piss stains all over the box spring sheets. Crumbs on the floor.
- Destiney (4/5): - staff wasnt very nice
- Destiney (10/5): - very nice and friendly disappointed ice machine is off limits
- William (2/5): - Good size room. Felt clean. Got bed bug bites.
- James (2/5): - I was over charged for my room twice on the same day
- Jennifer (6/5): Ok for the price. Wouldn’t pay more - Ok for one night. Not terribly clean - lots of dirt around windows. Looks like renovations are underway so hope it gets better and would stay again for the price
- Wayne (10/5): - It was a very nice stay. Didn't get to check out the lounge. But next time.
- Roger (8/5): - My favorite place to stay in Cambridge because it is an excellent value. Everything was great but the bathroom, which was clean, was in need of some basic maintenance.
- Russell (6/5): - Great area; hotel needs remodeling
- Scott (10/5): - Friendly Staff. Great Price.
- Christopher M (8/5): - Nice staff
- David (8/5): - Good location
- Justin (10/5): - Very nice and convenient
- Mark (8/5): - For the price, it was fine. Clean sheets, clean bathroom, TV and a shower. I slept decently on the bed too.
- Christopher M (8/5): - Nice staff
- Christopher M (10/5): - Staff was nice
- Md Shifat (8/5): - Except Denny everything as dine in closes by 10. But i would recommend Denny to eat. Their steaks are good. about the hotel it nice & comfy at this budget.
- Ingeborg (10/5): - Nice place for a quick stay.
The pool is great, and the location is close to shopping and restaurants.
Maybe housekeeping could be a little more on the stick....
The receptionists were great!
- Erica (10/5): - We really enjoyed the pool. It was very clean and relaxing. Can’t wait to go back again.
- Doug (4/5): - Shower looked liked it hasn't been cleaned in months. No soap no shampoo no tissue 2 towels terrible all round.
- Donald (2/5): Not for senior people's - $140/night was double what we should have paid ! Hall ways stunk to hi heaven.Air conditioning was hit or miss, kiosk locks on doors worked when they felt like it ! How ever the front desk folks were very pleasant.
Will not book this place next year.
- Daryl (4/5): - Long in the tooth facility, beat-up looking. Staff SUPER NICE. I guess new ownership is "transitioning"?
- Brett (8/5): - Wasn’t horrible pretty quiet spot for the night the room was actually pretty big just smelled kinda weird in the hall but other than that was pretty nice for how cheap it was
- Robert (8/5): - The smell of cumin filled the hallways. Clean, fresh paint, but very dated!
- Barb (2/5): Do not recommend - The first room we checked into was unclean, we were given a second room which was worse than the first, dirty linens and trash, beds unmaid , it had not been touched except for dirty linen on floor! We did get a third room after the desk clerk first inspected it. It was clean, could have been better. We will not recommend this Hotel to anyone! This is the first bad experience we have had using Hotels.com
- Christopher (6/5): Room review - Room was not clean. Hair in sink and shower. Rug in room did not appear to have been cleaned. No remote when we came into the room. Trying to get 1 was difficult. Asked for remote around 5 in the afternoon and did not get one till after 8 in the evening. Staff was friendly.
- Cindy (8/5): - Had to call for towels for our room, then had to get them ourselves. Stayed for a few days, and they never cleaned the room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ground floor request totally ignored. - Requested a ground floor room because my wife has difficulty with stairs. Request was ignored and there are no elevators. As we were leaving on checkout day, my wife fell on the stairs. Luckily, she was not hurt badly, just a bruised knee and ego. No offer of any compensation.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Would not stay again. - The beds were clean. The rest of the room was not very clean. The bathtub had mold. There was quite a bit of hair in the bathroom. Our room had a terrible odor. The pool is not the greatest for a person with mobility issues.
- Heather (10/5): - Was able to take my dog and with a fenced in
They was able to deel at homeyardthey
- Dekota (10/5): - Easy cheap and good
- Jeff (10/5): - I liked it all. Everything was fine
- Jeff (10/5): - Clean
- Jeff (10/5): - It was good just don't have a cover sheet on the bed
- Verified traveler (4/5): FIND ANOTHER PLACE - HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED - Upon check-in to our room, we soon discovered our TV did not work at all and the Wi-Fi was barely working for minutes at a time. I called down to the front desk, and housekeeping was supposed to come but never did. We left for dinner, came back, and still the TV was not working. We walked down to the front desk and were told there would be no maintenance until the following day. We were told we could change rooms which is highly inconvenient at 9:30 p.m. and add to the fact my husband is disabled. But we did so because my husband enjoys watching TV at night to fall asleep.
Well, we had tv but the mattress in this room was horrible! It belongs in the dumpster. All night we rolled to the edges like we were going to fall off. Plus the room smelled old and musty.
It doesn't end there. The pool that this hotel boasts about was not even open for Memorial Day Weekend. It's locked up and no chairs to speak of. FALSE ADVERTISING.
If they do not intend to open their pool until a certain date than they should place that information on their website. It was eighty-degree weather, people wanted to swim, but could not.
The three days we were there we honestly never saw a housekeeping cart. So no fresh towels, coffee, toilet paper, etc. I have never been to a hotel where there is no housekeeping.
Lastly, their Tiki Lounge is a joke I have no clue why other reviewers are saying it's a fun spot. It's a dark and gloomy, place! When we looked in there on a Saturday night it was dead.
- Ashley (8/5): - Convience
- Kathleen (10/5): - The front desk person was awesome and helped every way he could..
The dryers dont work very well but other than that i loved the stay and loved the tiki bar
- Ashley (10/5): - It's convenient and cheap
- Joy (2/5): Run away! - The service was horrible. The room was disgustingly dirty. The microwave and fridge were gross. Everything was old. I was too afraid to open the bed or use the shower.the advertised lounge was closed. I booked handicap and had an up the stairs room.
- Delbert (8/5): - Loved the tiki bar.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel - We always enjoy staying at the Southgate Hotel in Cambridge. It's an affordable hotel and always clean.
- Ricky (10/5): Great stay - We had a great stay. Room was very nice. The woman at the front desk was so sweet, and help full. We're already planning our stay for next year.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Dated but ok. - Grew up in this town and this hotel has been around a long time. My class reunion was held here so I booked a room. The check in process and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was very clean and had a refrigerator and microwave. Not many electrical outlets for charging. The biggest issue is that it’s very dated and had a bit of deferred maintenance. My bathroom door actually had a fist hole punch in it. The staff at the tiki bar were great.
- Ryan (8/5): - Can walk to eateries.
- joseph (4/5): - The biggest problem is that it is very dated.
It smelled musty and every time the air conditioning came on the smell of old air filter.
- Tina (10/5): - Did an amazing job
- Georgette (2/5): - I liked the pool. Did not like our bathroom the bathtub had rust all around the inside and the vent in the bathroom had paint chipping off. The blankets was very old and the bed was very hard. They charged me $64.00 over the said amount for bed tax. They need to really update their rooms. Glad i only stayed one night there and then went to a nicer hotel for two days. We'll never stay there again. I do not recommend 😐
- Debra (8/5): Weekend getaway - The hotel was a bit dated and not the cleanest. There was spash marks on he cleaning and wall .The microwave didn't work. The pool and fitness center seemed desent..Had alot of fun at the tiki bar. There was a dj and we met alot of cool people
- TYLER (6/5): not the greatest but not the worst - hotel was ok but it was outdated the bar is closed until Wednesday their was some gun shots around midnight so didn't sleep a whole lot their is a lot of people just wondering around outside at nights if your on a budget it will get the job done but i would recommend probably just going somewhere else
- Verified traveler (10/5): Southgate - The host/desk clerk was very cordial. Everything went well. I slept well.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay, ample parking with many food options within walking distance.
Pool is very clean as well as the grilling area out back.
- Jaycen (6/5): - Staff was very helpful and maid service was great. Tv had no movie channels at all and every other station had no sound.
- Sarah (10/5): Great experience. - The desk staff were so kind and sweet, they were very helpful. The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The Tiki Lounge was a blast. I would absolutely stay there again (but will book directly through them as it is MUCH cheaper that way).
- 711rogerd (2/5): Faulty Towers, but not in a funny way - First room had no heat. The staff moved me to another room, but my cpap machine blew a circuit breaker and all electricity went out. After much futzing by staff, the power came back on. Very long night with no peaceful sleep. Staff was sympathetic, but not really helpful. Nothing works right here.
- Sherry (8/5): Check in was easy staff with super nice - Overall it was a good stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is an older property, but everything was clean. They have updated carpeting and a few things. The bath area had rust stains in the tub, maybe they have real hard water not sure. But still it was clean and we felt safe in the area.
- Laurie A (10/5): Sweet deal - Very nice hotel they r doing great repairs. Only thing was the tiki bar was not open(closed mon-weds) ugh But great restaurants nearby. Would definitely stay again
- Cheryl (8/5): - The Tiki bar/lounge doesn’t exist anymore. To compensate, perhaps an evening snack or continental breakfast would be nice. There are no instructions in the room on how to checkout. There are no comfortable chairs to sit on for reading/relaxing. There was no clock in the room. TV/remote was difficult to use. There were cigarette burn holes in the bedspread. The room was clean. There were plenty of towels.
- Patti (8/5): - It was pleasant and comfortable.
Needs new tv and premium channels. Also, not happy that we got a strange call at 2 on the room phone😡
- Elizabeth (8/5): Bathroom - The bathroom could have been better. Low toilet, rust in the tub was bad, sink faucet needed scrubbed.
- Jamie (4/5): - Broken toilet, beetles on the floor, huge party going on
- Robert (6/5): - Served it's purpose. Older hotel in need of upgrade. Lobby remodeled but the room is in need of repair; hole in bathroom door, no exhaust fan, broken tile and stuck shower/spigot valve.
- Tracie (10/5): - Great service all around, excellent outdoor seating !!
- Patti (10/5): - Room was very nice and staff very friendly
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice hotel - Friendly check in & check out. Room was clean. Pet friendly. Only thing that bugged me was the TV programming was confusing to me ... and once I would finally find a channel, it would cut out due to connection issues. Other than that, very nice stay. If I'm ever back in the area, will consider staying there.
- Agata (4/5): Needs upgrading! - Not a 3-star hotel as advertised ,dirty bathrooms and there was no hot water in the shower ,only warm. Loud mini refrigerator and AC unit . We were cold . You get 1 sheet and blanket.
- Robert (8/5): - Sleeping area was good for the price, but the bathroom looked like it had not been cleaned.
- Marinella (10/5): Great price! Great hotel! - Great hotel! We checked in late in the night on a long road trip with my two cats. It was a relief to come inside to a friendly clerk and a very clean nice smelling room. The bed was very comfy and we had a great night's sleep! I will use this hotel from now on on my cross country road trips I do many times a year!
- KEVIN E (10/5): - Nice comfortable place.
- Diana Wells (8/5): - The location was great. Numerous eating opportunities within walking distance. Room wasn’t fancy, but comfortable.
Problem: internet was sporadic.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Pool in need of some attention beer bottle caps all over the pool area and in the pool. Water in need of some chlorine.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was excellent! The hotel is located in a great location in the town of Cambridge
- Gloria (8/5): - It was fine for what I needed.. Daughter had bridal shower there, and I needed a place to stay while in town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The place was clean. Housekeeping was excellent. Worked with us on things we needed and needed done. Tub was large enough to set back and relax in. Everthing in the room worked as it should.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was a long way from the lobby. The side entrances were old and obsolete; The room was comfortable and the bed was great.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly staff. Cleaniness
- 509rickg (4/5): I would only stay here if I had no other choice - Hotel was old, room was smelly from water drip on a/c, front desk attendant was more interested in smoking cigarettes than working. As far as I could tell he wasn't watching Captain Kangaroo
It had a bar but it was closed.
It was summer and the bed still had a winter blanket on it, almost like it hadn't been used in months.
The a/c leaked so the floor was wet by it. Plus I could swear my room got hotter as it ran
The shower didn't have any complimentary shampoo
The property was all together outdated
- Val_Hotz (8/5): Charming, friendly clean hotel with a bar - Room was spacious and clean. The hotel and bar staff were extraordinarily friendly. Would stay here again if we ever pass this way again. After a long drive it was nice to have a quiet clean place to stay and have a drink. Walking distance to several places to eat.

- W5444CYchristinab (10/5): A great Get Away!! - A beautiful & quiet setting on a busy shopping strip..Easy access to the freeways..The rooms are nice and everything was clean. The staff is very nice & pleasant..The tiki bar was a nice added feature , just wish they offered food..but close enough to many options so not a big deal..Enjoyed our stay & look forward to returning if in the area...Bravo to the owner !!
- looking4OZ (8/5): Cambridge marble and Glass Show - We came in for the show and stayed one night. We had a room on the first floor. It was clean - also had mini fridge and microwave.
Only issue I really had was that the air was blowing directly on my head while trying to sleep. If you are a sinus sufferer this is bad news! However, I was able to roll the large desk chair between the bed and the wall unit - problem solved.
It was very quite there- could not hear other patrons. We were almost at the opposite end of the building from the tiki bar - so the level of noise may be different down there.
There are signs for a game room... but they don't have one. Kids and husband were disappointed about that. But all in all a nice stay for a decent price. Nice front desk staff too.
