Guest Reviews
- Caroline Beth (8/5): - A charming old building, very well maintained and the bathrooms were very clean. Some midnight vehicle operations in an adjacent yard.
- Lauren (7/5): Great location in Queenstown for a short stay - Great location, nice and quiet, beds were comfortable and staff were lovely. Unfortunately the room wasn’t serviced during our stay - this was our only issue.
- Stuart (7/5): The Empire Hotel is conveniently located and offers spacious and clean rooms. - It is conveniently located to the wilderness train and central business area of Queenstown. The room was clean and spacious with a modern ensuite. The hotel offers a reasonable meal in the dining area. The stairs are a bit of a climb with luggage as there are no downstairs rooms available.
- Harradine (8/5): -
- Katrina (8/5): Great location, enjoyed our stay in this historic pub. - Loved the Blackwood staircase and old pub feel. Great location, room basic but clean and comfortable. Staff friendly, and the complimentary breakfast was great! Bed was a little squeaky
- McDonald (10/5): 125 years old... - The staff, food, customers (Cheyanne) and the amenities. Leaving!
- James (7/5): DISAPPOINTING FOOD - Good central location. Rooms are very basic set up. No bench space in bathroom for toiletties.
Food in the dining room was not at the same quality as visiting 3 years ago. Had the worst sticky date pudding there in my life. The garlic prawns were lacking any garlic flavour too.
- Rose (10/5): -
- Chris (7/5): -
- Tanya (3/5): -
- Catalina (4/5): - The bathrooms were clean at night The night was cold and the bed uncomfortable
- dragan (7/5): - Location None
- Maree (8/5): Lovely place to stay if you get a room with an ensuite. - Beautiful hotel, excellent location, quiet Breakfast was very minimal
- Anouk (10/5): -
- David (9/5): -
- McGregor (4/5): - A quaint old place. The room was clean. The staircase was the feature. The room could best be described as a box room! It would still have been too small, even if it had a single bed in there.
- Hubert (8/5): -
- Robert (9/5): -
- Liz (3/5): Nice stairs, very basic facilities. - The security light outside our window kept going off and the guy delivering the kegs at 3am in the morning woke us up as it was so noisy.
- Che Ming (8/5): -
- Mark (7/5): Great location - Clean sheets..clean bathroom..great location No tv in room..a bit noisy at night with creaky hallway floor boards and people going in and out of their rooms.
- Romina (7/5): -
- Julie (7/5): - Close to everything. No one helped us get our luggage up those huge stairs to our room. The floors boards creaked so badly, we couldn’t sleep.
- Colin (8/5): -

- Kimberley (8/5): -

- Justina (7/5): Beautiful old pub with good accommodation, meals and friendly staff. - Centre of town, right across the road from the Wilderness Railway. Good meals. Great accommodation. Beautiful, old heritage style pub. Great staff especially Squizzy and Jarrod. The hot water or lack of. The rooms and ensuites were great but the hot water for showers was non existent. Two days of cold showers isn’t ideal in freezing cold weather.
- Anna (6/5): -
- Rachel (8/5): - Convenient location and clean ensuite. Historic staircase was impressive. Meals offered in the dining room were tasty and promptly served. Monday evening was not a busy night. Breakfast simple but OK.
- Yohani (10/5): -
- Colin (8/5): A good stop over - Easy to book in. We ate in that night and the meal was good and well priced. While the rooms were small, they contained everything that you need.
- Kim (7/5): -
- Kelly (7/5): Old world charm - It’s absolutely stunning, steeped in history. It was like going back in time. Glorious! The food downstairs was average but OK.
- Churchill (8/5): - Olde world feeling
- Helen (6/5): -
- Yohani (8/5): Great old world charm in centre of town - Lovely old world charm. A bit scruffy around the edges but that just added to the character. Staff very friendly and helpful. Pillows could have been a bit plumper maybe?
- Johanna (8/5): Great time staying in the centre of Queenstown. - Breakfast good, enough choice. We would have liked to have had a few more vegetarian choices on the dinner menu. Nevertheless, we dined three nights in your hotel during our stay.
- Kabita (6/5): -
- Annette (8/5): Pleasant, comfortable. Perfect location. - Location, location. Beautiful old staircase NT listed. Lovely old dining room. Good breakfast. Good pillows and comfortable bed.
Good value. Street parking but parked just down the road in the RSL car park.
- Tanya (7/5): Not complaining,as we’ve stayed here before - Awesome hotel, close to everything Too expensive for the room we got!
A lot of dust, and not cleaned thoroughly
- Mike (8/5): - Great history, fabulous staircase Rooms are very basic. No en-suite but very close by over the corridor.
- Alex (6/5): Small town vibes - Bed was incredibly comfortable. Shower pressure was amazing. Great location. The initial interaction when checking in came across rude and uninviting. There was a sign on reception saying if unattended please see bar staff. But there was someone in the room so said hello and they said go to the bar. Didn't come across very nice. But they bar staff were lovely.
- Amanda (9/5): Great value for money. Classic old building! - Historical building, old pics
- Sheryl (8/5): - all was as expected and good nothing to dislike
- Niall (9/5): - The preservation of the past in a comfortable present
- Margaret (9/5): Comfortable stay. - Grand old lady, plenty of nice clean bathrooms.
Friendly staff Breakfast was very basic.
- gary (8/5): - Location and old style hotel Having to walk the stairs, needs a lift for people who back issues
- Laura (9/5): - A classic old style hotel from another era. Comfortable, clean & welcoming. Evening meals were delicious. The breakfast included was an unexpected bonus
- Pamela (8/5): Good -
- Sabey (7/5): - As a pub with rooms with shared bathrooms, the bathrooms were clean, brand new and a lot of them. Security and access were good. The rooms were quite basic (for the price)
- Sharyn (10/5): -
- Jamie (8/5): Very enjoyable - Great location, Lovley building
- Sean (10/5): Quick getaway - Clean rooms, excellent bathroom facilities. Great location . Good breakfast selection Nothing
- Michael (5/5): Basic - We could not book a dinner reservation as they were "booked out".
The room they had for us was adjoining the area being painted, internally, with strong paint odours and painters working. We complained and were moved ultimately.
- Strathearn (9/5): - OK brekky
- Debbie (5/5): Disappointing - Location was central Room very small. Bed small and dated
- Carla (9/5): Beautiful historic building in great location - We loved the old charm of the building and all the history printed on the placemats. We had dinner in the dining room and it was a little disappointing. The seafood marinara was like tin sauce with hardly any seafood in it and the chicken Parma lacked taste.
- Cathy (8/5): -
- Kerrilee (10/5): -
- Terry (10/5): We loved it. Nice surroundings and classic old pub charm. Breakfast an added bonus. - Food at the dining room was exceptional. Excelllent cooking. Have had two great meals and going back again if i can get a table! Awesome period pub. Hard to get a seat for dinner. Limited space. Not a fault of the premise just the way an old pub is.
- Carla (9/5): Great location - It’s so central to everything The meals were a little tasteless. The marinara tasted like it was tin sauce and had barely any seafood in it
- Margaret (10/5): Lovely - The Staff, especially Danielle and Danielle were Amazing!!! SO helpful. Blessed Gorgeous
- Tracy (6/5): A charming historical hotel. The breakfast and bathroom products were very basic. - Breakfast was included but very basic. Only cereal was rice bubbles and nutri-grain. Not even weet-bix or muesli. Was a very busy long weekend and the staff were under pressure
- Rhonda (10/5): Excellent - Clean and centrally located
- Philip (5/5): Ordinary - Reception was at the bar, when they were available.
Didn’t tell me breakfast finished at 9 am, never heard that before on any hotel
- Wendy (9/5): - Location and the meals were delicious
- Russell (7/5): Iconic stay, best for 1 night. - The Empire Hotel is a very iconic place to stay. Its history dates back to 1901, but some things are more up to date than others! There's a lot of historical spaces in the hotel, including a beautiful, dark wood staircase in the lobby, but our room had recently been renovated. It had a new shower with great water pressure, a good-sized wall-mounted TV, a small bar fridge for drinks and food, a wall heater, and a kettle for tea. For breakfast, there is an OK continental spread, including options of cereal, toast with condiments such as jam, fruit, juices, and coffee you make yourself. The bed in the room was only a double, and felt dated, so it wasn't very comfortable for two people to sleep in. And while the room did have a ceiling fan, and a window you could open, the room did become very hot in the evening (travelled in March) due to a lack of airflow. Given the age of the hotel the floor boards outside the room creak quite loudly when other guests walk down the cooridor.
There is a small diner in the hotel, but it was booked out for dinner when we arrived around 4pm. There are other dinner options in town, but it would have been helpful to be told during check-in which were recommended.
- Justine (10/5): -
- Iwona (6/5): Charming old hotel in urgent need of maintenance - Grand hotel with a centre piece impressive stairway
Centrally located
Secure storage in the basement for when we went on a 7 day hike and left small bags behind Dodgy partition in the room (family suite), not in character with the building, small and old ensuite bathroom with loose basin tap and leaky shower
Staff ran of their feet and unable to smile.
Continental breakfast items at bare minimum, no staff in attendance
Tiny kitchenette (just a kettle with tea/coffee bags) old square table and a small fridge
Mix up with meals at dinner (2 out of 6 people finished their meals before the other arrived and after prompting)
- JENEENE (6/5): Queenstown was as expected :-) - People were friendly and obliging and the food was tasty 🙂
- Garry (8/5): - Breakfast was great and fresh fruit as well
- john (5/5): -
- Michelle (4/5): Would not recommend, the reality was very different from the pictures! - Room was tiny, view out window was of adjacent brick wall. The hotel is badly in need of rejuvination
- Dimuthu (9/5): -
- Debbie (9/5): -
- Kate (8/5): Confortable - Convient to Wilderness Railway
- Charlie (8/5): - The bathroom facilities were ultra clean and the room was comfortable. The breakfast included was adequate but would have been better if Vegemite was an option as all they had was jam and honey.
- shane (9/5): Would recommend Empire to future travellers. - Very well run and staff were great. Restaurant ran out of many menu items early in the evening.
- Ellen (10/5): -
- harry (7/5): Great old fashioned pub with historical links - Food was excellent large tasty meals
- YUN HSUAN (6/5): - 很古典的外觀
離車站非常近 內部設備相當老舊
- George (8/5): - Hotel appeared to be in the process of renovation but our room was adequate with a good bathroom Breakfast was poor
- Lydia (9/5): -
- David (6/5): -
- Christine (8/5): Enjoyed our stay very pleasant - Good location nice meals would be nice to have a car park not the street Nothing
- David Robert Lamb (9/5): - the old-world charm, but the room was nice and modernised, high ceiling and an amazing view. We got the best room they had the town is a little quite so not a lot to do
- Bradley (8/5): - Bedrooms a bit small but clean and tidy. Great staff and good food in the restaurant. Lovely old building and full of history
- Critchley (7/5): Enjoyed the visit, the heritage was a plus and room was adequate. Hated the stair climb. - Centrally located opposite the West Coast Wilderness Railway Station. Easy access to the main street. Lots of historic charm. Meals were good - typical pub fare. The heritage of the Hotel was a big plus Lack of off street parking was an issue - especially as it gets busy with the West Coast Railway being so popular.
As a disabled person, the lack of a lift or disabled access was very problematic. The steep, heritage listed stairs are beautiful but impractical for anyone with poor mobility. The Hotel really should consider putting in a lift somewhere.
- Philip Roy (6/5): Ok for a short stay. Queenstown is very quiet. Locals ver friendly. - Central location. Quirky. Bar shut at 8 pm even to residents. Overpriced for what you get. Breakfast was a bowl of cereal (4 choices), toast and jam or honey, coffee and tea and a piece of fruit.
- Kent (6/5): - It's near the wilderness train. The kitchen closed an hour ahead of schedule and the breakfast is very rudimentary.
- Andrew (7/5): This historic hotel must have been amazing in its heyday, hosting a PM and Nellie Melba. - Great location. Beautiful historic hotel. Nice breakfast. No towel rails at all in the bathroom.
- Jennifer (7/5): Queenstown stay - Large room with access to balcony at front of hotel Self service breakfast limited choice. Dining Room closed early on Australia Day
- Taryn (8/5): -
- Roxanne (8/5): - Restaurant was good, food was great. Was handy being across the road to the train station. The rooms smelt a bit musty.
- Emilie (2/5): -
- Danae (8/5): - Historical nature right in town. Breakfast not suited to our diet.
- Mireille (8/5): Aangenaam verblijf in dit historisch hotel - Aangename, goed verwarmde kamer.
Nette badkamer.
Prima locatie.
Historisch kader. Ontbijtbuffet: eerder beperkt.
