Guest Reviews
- Izette (10/5): - Feels like home N/A
- Heidi (9/5): Carol and her team truly went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Nothing was ever too much to ask, and she even m - Felt like home
- RUAIRIDH (10/5): Can’t think of a better place to stay in the lovely town of Tulbagh. - Everything! The location is great. The house is superb. The staff are wonderful. Excellent breakfast around the kitchen table - it feels like being part of the family. All good.
- Ronald (8/5): Perfect stay for doing some vine yard visits - Location close to Main Street
- Strauss (1/5): Poor communication - Never got to see the accomodation We were passed off to a different host at a different accomodation venue without being properly told what was going on. Paid for accomodation we never received.
- Philippa (2/5): Very disappointing. Would not recommend it. - Pretty but very poorly maintained. Website pictures grossly exaggerated. The building was very poorly maintained. Security was nonexistent. We were burgled on the first night losing all identity documents & personal items. Windows were not secured, doors shoddily secured.
Swimming pool not maintained, was green. Website pictures were very misleading. Kitchen amenities were old & unattractive. Accommodation was not what was booked.
- Irene (9/5): Excellent overnight stop in a beautiful old house - Breakfast was excellent. Freshly cooked and served with a smile Parking was tight
- Vermaak Properties Obo (8/5): Excellent Stay - Excellent
- Robert (7/5): -
- Colleen (10/5): - Friendly, accommodating staff, gorgeous cool house, wonderful swimming pool, conveniently situated
- Gabbi (10/5): A beautiful, welcoming home with fantastic hosts and staff - Carol and Dorothy were wonderful hosts who went out of their way to ensure my stay was comfortable. The home was incredibly beautiful and immaculately kept. It genuinely felt like a treat to stay there. I will most definitely be returning.
Carol also owns the best restaurant in town, Readers, just a short walk down the street. I ate there twice during my stay and each meal was exceptional. I can’t wait to go back. everything was perfect
- Reg (8/5): Pleasant, relaxing and enjoyable. - Simple, home from home and adequate. "Open plan" bathroom and toilet
- Renata (10/5): - Wittedrift Manor House is a beautiful old Cape Dutch house in the perfect location, in the beginning of the main historic street of Tulbagh, where you can find also the fabulous Readers restaurant. We definitely recommend a visit.
Very spacious and clean rooms are decorated with amazing antique art, and very comfortable beds. Just perfect.
Carol and PJ were absolutely amazing hosts and very helpful with anything we needed for our first stay in Tulbagh. We enjoyed our little chat in your beautiful garden with a glass of wine - it felt so homely and welcoming!
Thank you so much for the wonderful stay in your home and we definitely recommend your place to all Tulbagh visitors. Nothing to not like !
- Libor (10/5): Very recomended. - We had a wonderful stay at the Wittedrift Manor House. Our Hostess, Carol and her chambermaid, welcomed us very friendly and we felt as at castle in mid nineteen century from the minute we've entered the premises. The Wittedrift Manor House has an unique atmosphere of an old noble family, it is full of culture, an art and good will. We had a lovely room with a lot of paintings and other pieces of art. Carol is very heartiness, warmth and communicative woman, she has opened her restaurant Readers only for us, as at Sundays is obviously closed. The diner was excellent and lekker. We loved the full farmers breakfast that was prepared by Carol herself and a friendly staff member. We had a very memorable stay at this pretty guest house.
- Nick (5/5): - The booking. Com described the bathroom as private
This is not ensuite
The description states there is a restaurant on site, there is no restaurant on site
So altogether a bit disappointing
- Werner (8/5): -
- laura (10/5): - The room and breakfast were wonderful.
Our hostess was knowledgeable and helpful
- Fleur (7/5): -
- Jayshree (7/5): - The property is nice.. It is fine for a overnight stay. Breakfast was a surprise.. We struggled to contact the person to open the gate.. The board says entrance in Church street.. There is not bell at the entrance of the property.
- Gordon (2/5): Dreadful - Location is great. Security seemed fine. Dreadful stay in a mis-sold property.
Booking, arrival and check in was fine. Looks like a charming, characterful place but first impression on entering the property was an overwhelming smell of smoke from the fire. Clearly the smoke wasn't going up the chimney.
The allocated room was off a hallway from the communal lounge. The room also had an overwhelming smell of smoke from the fire.
The property was listed with a "private bathroom". This turned out to be a bathroom on the other side of the hallway leading off the communal lounge. It didn't lock from the outside so was accessible to anybody. Clearly not a private bathroom.
To clear the smoke in the room, I opened the window. The smell of smoke gave way to a damp, musty smell instead. Not sure where it was coming from but it was very unpleasant.
With the window closed the smell built up in the room. By 1am I had to open the window to get air in. Fortunately it wasn't mosquito season as there were no mosquito nets on the windows. It was an uncomfortable night and a relief to get out into the fresh air in the morning.
- Margie (7/5): We enjoyed our short 1 night stay. - Comfy bed and excellent breakfast. Bathroom had no shower curtain and no door? It was very cold and the house is an old large high roofed house so not ideal in the winter.
- Jenny (10/5): - The house was charming, filled with art and history, the staff were very thoughtful and welcoming and had our beds and rooms warming when we arrived which was very welcome on a chilly evening.
- Gavin (9/5): Very nice stay - Large bedroom , clean with comfortable bed. Situated in town with restaurants close by. Breakfast is available if you want but we ate the hotel down the road which was great. Staff was very pleasant and an asset to the BnB. Our room had an en suite but some rooms don't and have a shared bathroom. No TV in our room ( which was advertised on booking.com) but didn't really matter as we not in room much and there is wifi that works well. Shower has good pressure and hot which I like. They have a fan for summer and heater for winter in the room. Also has a large lounge with fireplace and tv with satellite channels to watch. Very "rustic" house with lots of character and will use it again when in the area for the festival. Safe parking behind gates. For summer they also have a swimming pool Was very happy with the place
- Tahn (8/5): Very good -
- Maria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (4/5): Not a great nights sleep. - Didn’t have breakfast, location was great. Had a bad night sleep due to mosquitos, despite using copious amounts of the peacefull sleep spray supplied I was kept awake by mozzies buzzing around my head and discovered numerous bites in my face in the morning. Having a bathroom totally open to the room is probably 90% of the problem.
- Debbie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Erika (8/5): Very good -
- Samantha (10/5): Exceptional - The staff are absolutely Amazing and, in particular, Dorothy went out of her way to ensure I had a comfortable stay. The place is run like a right ship; clean and beautiful. Highly recommend! Wifi is more than suitable for vacation / leisure. If you require a video business call, it could lag a little.
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wixx (10/5): warm welcome, clean comfy bed and amazing pool garden area - great welcome, with comfy beds, invited to join the other guest for breakfast in the "family' table which make you feel like home away from home, pool area welcoming with excellent Wi-Fi, managed to do all work emails in the lovely garden, pool area after a swim to cool.
- Chan (10/5): Exceptional one night stay, clean and comfortable - A warm welcome with friendly staff, the room was clean and comfortable, little confusing re the private bathroom, but it was so nice to have a bath. I was offered breakfast and joined the other guest in the kitchen, and the host Carol chatted about the valley. As an artist in my spare time - loved the art and collectable the filled the house -
- Oliver (1/5): Horrible, overpriced hotel. We couldn’t wait to leave. Avoid. - Hundreds of mosquitoes, and they didn’t provide a mosquito net.
Breakfast at a group table, with no option for a private meal.
Decor terrible. Like living in Bric-à-brac store. Dark old stodgy mismatched furniture.
- Craig (5/5): Passable -
- Pauline (8/5): comfortable and central - Quaint olde-world environment It is quite dark
- Deon (9/5): Wittedrift Manor House, Tulbagh Splendid old Cape Dutch residence, furnished in style, located at th - Wittedrift Manor House, Tulbagh
Splendid old Cape Dutch residence, furnished in style, located at the start of Tulbagh's historic Main Street. Offers comfortable and spacious accommodation, common use of TV lounge, porch, patio and pool in fine garden and off-street parking and an excellent breakfast served in main kitchen. Congenial atmosphere. The house is affiliated with the excellent Readers restaurant a short walk away along the the historic Main Street. Would happily return.
- Mike (5/5): Was ok but nothing outstanding - good location old and tired
- Julie (4/5): The photos misrepresent the condition of the house and garden - Friendly staff In the pictures it looked like a lovely country house with a nice pool and garden - in realty it is a gloomy dark house with some shabby furniture and crammed with dusty stuff. The garden unkept, dried out and mainly hard dry sand. There was furniture squeezed into a section of the patio but had a large metal thing underneath which prevented use and the smelly dog bed and dirty bowls alongside were off putting. No consideration for guests comfort. We had booked for 3 nights but left after 1
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Thomas (9/5): Superb - Nice place to stay, the furnishings were not really my style though. Special thanks to Dorothy for her kindness and help. We booked half board and to our great surprise dinner was offered at the Readers restaurant our favorite in Tulbagh. Couldn't have been better. Had some very noisy neighbors, music sometimes too loud, talking too loud, close to shouting, they didn't pay much attention to the rest of other residents.
- Geert (10/5): Super - Charming old house with beautiful garden. A nice helpful woman welcomed me. The house is a museum with paintings, sculptures and curiosities. too bad the owner was not there for explanation. I slept wonderfully in a beautiful spacious room. the breakfast was also delicious.
- Anina (5/5): No value for money - Friendly staff if you can find them. Beautiful Cape Dutch architecture. House has a moldy smell. The charm of the house is destroyed by cheap art. In a beautiful home like this, less is more!!!The dogs on the premises barked throughout the night. The workers that are working on the roof made a loud noise on an early Sunday morning while walking above your head. There was no coffee station in the room, and no one told us about coffee in the kitchen ( just as well because there were no pods). Photos on Booking.com are misleading. The 3 bicycles in front of the house with flat tyres sums it all up.
- Danielle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sandy (4/5): Average to poor with an uncomfortable vibe - Friendliness of staff, location Definitely not value for money. My room had no bathroom on suite and I had to cross a corridor to access it. The house has a damp odour and is extremely dark . It felt like I was staying in a museum. There was a communal kitchen and no coffee station in room. A coffee pod machine was in the kitchen but without pods. Everything looked grungy. My friend who also stayed over but in a separate room the other side of the house. This was ideal and her room price was exorbitant for what she received. The Wi-Fi was sporadic, and carpets in my room threadbare in places.
- Karen (9/5): We had a wonderful two day visit, perfect to explore the surrounding countryside. - Centrally situated
Quaint and eclectic
Lovely staff An open bathroom and a double bed and single bed.
Fine if it is family, but sharing with friends and having an open toilet is not ideal!
- Zani (8/5): Very good -
- Heyneke (6/5): Pleasant -
- Camla (8/5): Very good - The room was nice and clean. My husband saw a cockroach in the kitchen when we were eating breakfast.
The one lightbulb was not working so we just switched it with one that was working from another lamp
- Annette (8/5): Very good -
- Frank (9/5): Cape Dutch old world charm and comfort surrounded by interesting art. - This beautiful heritage Cape Dutch house combines old world comfort with an eclectic art collection which has every room tell a story. My very late check-in was accommodated without any fuss and Carol could not have been more helpful. I sadly missed out on the breakfast, but the refreshment and kitchen facilities were excellent. Nothing noted.
- Shane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Melissa (9/5): A lovely house and garden, situated in a central location. - The house is spacious and the garden is lovely. I liked that the bathroom was private (not shared) There was a slight smell (possibly a drain) which wasn't great, but this didn't really impact the experience
- Claudia (9/5): Superb -
- Helene (8/5): Very good - The art was fascinating.
We were on our way back from holiday and had cooler goods that we could keep cold. Thank you Personal preference: to have a little less detail in the bedroom?
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good - Fabulous house with interesting art and eclectic items No hot water in morning due to local issue
- Nancy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marie (9/5): Superb -
- Victoria (10/5): Absolutely beautiful - Staying in such a beautifully preserved manor with all its antiques and wirqiness was really amIng
Above all the Hospitality of the hosts was superb, made us feel like we were home.
- Jack (10/5): Most enjoyable and hope to return next year - Breakfast was excellent and the staff exceptionally helpful and friendly. We were very fortunate to have been able to go on a lovely walk with the owner. We also had a lovely braai together with other residentsl Nothing to be honest
- Henk (9/5): The house is charming; the staff is extremely friendly and helpful; and we felt at home. - The breakfast was good. Great location.
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dimiter (9/5): Superb - Great replica Cape Dutch house with original doors and windows, full of quaint artefacts of personal value and taste of the owner PJ. Even greater to meet PJ in person, to chat and hike on the local farms
- Catrin (10/5): Exceptional - Great hospitality.
- Renda (8/5): Your facility made work felt like vacation. - Breakfast was excellent. The pool was a bonus after a hard day on site. The Wifi kept us in contact with our famalies, thank you.
We will definately use your facility / hospitality again when we are back for fase 2 of our project. To have a bit of space when having your meal in order to enjoy it.
- Willy (7/5): Good -
- Reinette (10/5): Exceptional -
- Willem (10/5): Exceptional - A very special house where you immediately feel at home. Loads of space, and very comfortable. Beautifull and interesting furniture, artifacts and art Well located to discover the region, do wine tasting etc. Very friendly staff excellent breakfast. Nothing
- Slabbert (10/5): A outstanding experience. Thank you. - Fantastic breakfast and the hostess was fantadtic.
P.J. was also so friendly. We appreciate an excellent stay.
- C (10/5): I felt transported back to old world charm in this period Manor house - I loved the old world charm and wonderful paintings on the walls.
- Grace (8/5): nice place - lovely place. meet my expectation.
- Liza (10/5): The welcome was very friendly and efficient; the room was perfect and very comfortable - -
- Sylvia (8/5): Very good -
- Gilbert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Niel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kevin (7/5): Good -
- Bertie (10/5): Dutch Gable House with amazing art and friendly staff and welcoming burning fire - The friendly staff, the amazing art collection, the comfortable bed, the large rooms, the warming fire on arrival, the home away from home feeling, the friendly dogs, the breakfast treat, the host and sharing of knowledge, The stay was too short
- Tracey (9/5): A stunning weekend in beautiful Tulbagh - at a stunning guesthouse! - Fantastic location, amazing staff, we really enjoyed the relaxed vibe of the house, where we could sit in the beautiful lounge in the afternoons or evenings, having something to drink and meeting the other guests. Nothing - we liked everything.
- Jesse (10/5): Magestic homely homestead, and welcomed liked family - The friendly staff, the homely atmosphere and the amazing collection of art on the walls. The welcoming fire in the lounge, the warm cosy room and the awesome treat in the morning, farm scrambled eggs in the kitchen.
- David (3/5): Really depressing and annoying to have spent money for that. - Cape Dutch architecture. That's it. No upkeep on outside. The place is dismal and depressing. Booking.com photos are misleading. Very little is being done to keep the place in even a half decent presentable mode. Flaking paint, old irrigation tubing and hoses lying about. Overgrown gardens. Junk stacked up in a carport. Just really depressing and off-putting. Fortunately, Dorothy, the house keeper, came to the gate while we were trying to find some contact info so we could enter as there is no buzzer or intercom. The 2 ancient dogs did not seem like they liked strangers coming in. The interior is filled with cheap, garish charity shop "art" work. It's a shame because the old manor house charm is totally destroyed by it. The smell of old, moldy smoke is very strong. There was 1 worthless, broken flat panel heater on the wall and a tiny electric fan heater that struggled to bring some warmth in to our bedroom. The tiny bathroom mirror was a joke that only one of the little people could make use of. We couldn't get out of there fast enough.
- Schafers (10/5): We will be back! - Outstanding value for money Nothing - everythign was out of this world.
- Charlee (10/5): COUNTRY SIDE HOSPITALITY! - A warm fireplace awaited us. Our room was also warmed up with a heater. The bed had electric blankets. The breakfast was lovely with crispy bacon. We will definitely go there again!
- Bertie (7/5): Good - Stay was very nice, Breakfast was delicious. Did not have a quote and was unrepaired with making the payment.
- Erika (9/5): It felt just like home! Will definitely recommend your establishment. - I liked that we could come and go as we wanted to without feeling like we are intruding. The electric blankets and heater in the room was well utilized as it was quite cold this weekend. The breakfast was awesome and the staff very friendly.
- Domingos (8/5): Very good -
- Sheree (10/5): Exceptional - So happy with our experience at Wittedrift, they were more than happy to accommodate all of our needs and we enjoyed a lovely, comfortable stay!
- David (10/5): Exceptional - Everything. Beautiful house filled with antiques and interesting items. Friendly and helpful staff close to everything. Nothing
- Smit (8/5): Very good -
- Patsy (8/5): lovely staff and comfortable rooms - lovely old house shower was a little erratic
- Angie (8/5): Very good -
- Howiet (10/5): A great stay full of character - The friendliness of the host and staff was exceptional. If you want something slightly different, a stay with character this is the place We particularly enjoyed the walks with BJ in the morning and would advise any one staying at Wittedrift to join BJ if you can
- Jon (10/5): One of the best places I have ever stayed at - Exceptional people, breakfast very good. Service amazing. Great location Load shedding wifi on would have been better
- Jon (10/5): Brillant place to stay - Extremely friendly and helpful people
- Johann (8/5): All over a quite comfortable stay at Wittedrift - Location very good...in the heart of the town; breakfast was super! The cold water tap in the shower didn't work...had to shower super quick not to be scorged by the hot water! Lighting in room was very dim...which made the room a bit on the dark side.
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Pleasant atmosphere, very friendly and helpful hosts and staff. We enjoyed the walk in the nearby orchards with our host Peter.
- Reynolds (9/5): Carol is an excellent host and made a stay a pleasure - very comfortable, lots of character and charm nothing
- Derick (9/5): The staff was extremely helpful and made our stay very comfortable. - The breakfast was excellent I should have been given a choice regarding how I wanted my eggs done, fied/scrambled/omelette.
