Guest Reviews
- Cameron (9/5): -
- Kay (10/5): Would stay again - Picked me up from train station Long walk to supermarket
- Hill (8/5): Great, central place to stay in Hakuba. - Close to ski bus stops. Breakfast every morning. Pickup and drop off to train station. Kind and friendly staff. Heaters in room warm space up quickly. Private bathroom in each room. Firm beds but I slept great. Nice duvets. Outdoor storage for ski equipment. Indoor storage with heater for ski boots. We used 3 rooms. In one room the attached bathroom had very strong sewer smell for the entirety of our stay. I saw previous review about this as well.
- philippe (10/5): -
- isaac (8/5): -
- Leigh (10/5): - Great location, awesome staff always willing to help and good breakfast Going home
- William (10/5): -
- Claire (8/5): Comfortable small lodge with great staff - The team running the lodge were amazing. They were helpful and friendly, which made us feel very welcome. The lodge is early in the ski shuttle bus scheduled pick ups, which means you always get a seat. Big bonus. Beds were really comfortable. Better than other hotel beds we slept in in Japan. The door to our room had a big gap at the top, meaning that light came through from the corridor and sound from the dining room/lounge below.
- Isabella (8/5): Excellent property, would definitely recommend - Very friendly staff, easy to arrange pick up and drop off from the train station.
Spacious room with comfortable bed.
Excellent breakfast included and microwave/hot water dispenser available for use. Also really appreciated the drying room and place to store our ski gear. Room was not very well insulated so quite cold unless heater running.
Would have been nice to have our room cleaned (or equipment so we could do it ourselves) and linen changed during our 10 day stay.
- Simon (10/5): Really nice B&B in Hakuba - We stayed in the low-season in September, getting a good deal on the rate. The property is managed by Asuka and Aurel, the nicest people ever. Both speak fluent english (quite rare in Japan). The best thing is the breakfast! Perfect energy before going on the ski slopes. Toilet and shower is a bit tiny, even by Japanese standards.
- Michelle (9/5): -
- Bradley (10/5): Great place to stay for a family snowboarding trip in Hakuba Valley, great breakfast, great staff. - A cozy and comfortable lodge with a super helpful staff and an excellent breakfast (and dinner too). Easy access to Happo One, Snowpark 47-Goryu and Tsugaike by the bus stop out front, and a short walk from restaurants in Echoland. Had a really wonderful stay and the staff was always happy to help out with questions.
- Joe (8/5): Good vibes - Great service, we appreciated the rides to and from the bus station. As well as the helpful travel suggestions.
Pretty easy walk to Happo One. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I was confused about the breakfast times initially.
- Ashley (10/5): Friendly comfortable stay close to skiing - All the staff especially the chef were extremely helpful and friendly. The food was excellent, especially the fresh made bread and jam. Beds were comfortable. The lounge area had games and cards which we enjoyed playing. The shuttle to the ski area was very easy to catch. Overall we were thrilled with our stay. Bathroom was small, but nothing that wasn't workable. Very little that we didn't like.
- Iuliia (10/5): Great - The host was very friendly and welcoming, gave us useful tips and answered all our questions.
The location of the hotel is very quiet and peaceful.
Really good breakfast were tasty and fresh – the host makes his own bread, jam and pancakes, and serves freshly brewed coffee.
The beds were very comfortable and there was more than enough space for us (2 person).
Overall, the place has a really nice vibe that makes you feel at ease.
Thanks Aurel and Chi The bathroom was a bit small, but it didn’t affect our stay.
- Sakari (9/5): - Friendly staff that spoke English very well. A delicious breakfast and cozy room. One minus side that there is no elevator and may require some strength to get luggage up the steep stairs.
- San (4/5): Unless you have absolutely no other place to stay, I would not recommend this accommodation at all. - The building and rooms are very old and poorly maintained. No towels, no bath towels, no toothbrushes, and no service at all. I really don’t understand why some people gave it a 9. Definitely not worth the price.
- FUMITO (9/5): -
- Eri (9/5): - Delicious and comfortable breakfast. Private toilets and showers. Stylish interior design.
- maureen (10/5): Great place - amazing hosts - Very clean and comfortable and the hosts are amazing. They were so helpful with all my questions and they foster a calm environment where you can relax and enjoy this cool town. The breakfast they made was wonderful - biggest mug of coffee we had in Japan! Would stay here again in a heartbeat - highly recommend the ensuite bathroom was small but it did the job!
- Jayson (9/5): Awesome relaxing time staying there this summer. - Breakfast was great! All hand made according to the staff
- Rajesh (10/5): - Breakfast, children liked the bunk beds Restroom is small and ventilation not enough
- Adelinde (8/5): -
- Ambinintsoa Vola (10/5): - Friendly staff, excellent breakfast, and very comfortable bed! The location is quiet (which is what we were looking for), and yet not far from Echoland. We loved walking in the neighborhood. The bathroom was a little too small, but we could still manage!
- Graham (10/5): Thanks for your hospitality! - We arrived late at night but he was waiting for us and welcome us.
We were very happy to stay there!
- Paul (10/5): - The quiet and beautiful location, close to restaurants and bars. Mostly the hosts were very kind and welcoming and they provided a great breakfast. Thank you for your hospitality. Nothing
- Josu (9/5): Superb - Breakfast was delicious, with homemade omelettes and pancakes. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the host was very helpful in planning our days in Hakuba. There was a small gap between the door and the wall, which allowed some noise from other guests to enter the room.
- Keren (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly and awesome breakfast
- Piotr (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Cassandra (10/5): Absolutely fabulous guest house - great staff, comfortable beds, delicious breakfast! - The breakfast was fabulous, home made bread - what more could you ask for! The staff went over and above for us, Cameron was a great host and we appreciated his hospitality immensely. We would definitely choose Hakuba Matata again!
- Scott (9/5): Awesome spot in Hakuba - Staff were so accommodating, room was comfortable with a big bed & heating, perfect location just a short walk from Echoland. As a bigger guy, the shower in our room was a little small for me
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable and friendly staff
Accommodating
Homely feeling
Good information sharing Don’t have an Onsen anymore
- Maria (10/5): Great Experience Overall! - The hosts are very friendly & accommodating! Nothing bad to say its home away from home. So nice x Nothing!
- Robert (2/5): In summary, we feel ripped off, but the on-site staff were great and at least tried their best to make it work for us. - Staff is great and went out of our way to accommodate us since we were given a double room when we had booked a triple. The staff did their best given our circumstance. We booked a triple room and were provided a double with an extra bed crammed in. There was no closet space, no where to place clothes, and essentially nowhere to walk inside the room, making it impossible to get comfortable and difficult to dry clothes, etc. I contacted the property owner (in NZ) who tried her best to convince us that a double room was really a triple. We attempted to find different accommodations but every place nearby was booked up and our intent was to ski, not to waste time finding a comfortable place to stay. We made due, but to experience a switch-a-roo on the part of the property owner wasn’t cool (and a first for us). We plan to contact booking.com to discuss this. If you book a triple room, you should expect a triple not a double.
- Rod (9/5): Really enjoyed our stay. - Fantastic helpful and friendly staff.
- Natasha (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Supratim (10/5): Lovely Hosts, a cozy house and a beautiful location. - Lovely and super helpful Hosts, a cozy house and a beautiful location. Loved the breakfast. Everything was great.
- Mark (9/5): This was a great place to stay! - This place was like a grown up backpackers, in a great way. It was very relaxed, with great staff. Cam did a great job of making sure everything was taken care of for us, even going in to town to pick something up for us. Being slightly out of the main town, it was nice and quiet, even on New Years eve.
The room that we had had its own hot tub, which was awesome after a particularly freezing day on the mountain. The beds were great and the room was clean. This reminded me of younger days travelling!
Thanks Cam for making our trip to Hakuba finish well! We had a great time. The bathroom was really small.
- Sue (9/5): Fantastic lodge for a week of skiing - Great quiet lodge only 10 minutes walk from main area of echo land. Free bus shuttle just outside to get to the snow.
Fantastic breakfast each morning and helpful and friendly hosts. Bathroom is very small.
- May (9/5): Was a great stay! - Great breakfast, friendly hosts, enjoyed the ceramic hot tub in the family room and it was spacious. It was also convenient to get to the shuttles. Though a bit further from the heart of Echoland. When we arrive it was only a new staff, so was a bit confusing as we were uncertain how to get to Echoland. Maybe if there could be a simple map with directions how to walk out would help. After we figured those out it was a breeze.
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - The breakfast was incredible, staff was very friendly, and location was centralized and a 10 minute walk from everything you need
- Hanna (10/5): Outstanding hospitality and the venue itself that has exceeded my expectations!!! - Excellent location, very close (40 m) to shuttle bus, recommended ski rental shop with discount and one ride to the slopes with equipment, discount for ski pass if bought in the property, ski storage room and drying room for boots, nice breakfasts and Cody evenings with the fire place;))) Nothing
- Jovin (8/5): Awesome Host! - The friendly hosts and the comfort of their lodge. Ample room spaces to get our luggage's sorted and still can move freely around the room. Comes with a hot tub too. Need to carry the luggage's up the stairs, but the host helped out in carrying them which lessen my load...
- Amy (9/5): Cosy, friendly and helpful - Both the owner and the staff working there were so friendly and helpful. The lodge was cosy and the room we had was nice and spacious. A silly thing really but would have loved more pillows so we could sit up and read / watch movies on our devices.
- Kumar (8/5): Very good -
- Khotchakorn (9/5): Superb - Feel like home. The staffs are friendly and trying to help anything.
- Prajeesh (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (10/5): With one of the most beautiful stays on our Japan road trip. A beautiful house in an edylous area and super friendly and -
- Shihwen (7/5): Good - Friendly staff, great breakfast The 3 beds room is very small for our family of 3.
- Willy (9/5): We love staying in this property. The host and staff made of stay memorable. Thank you very much! - Staff were friendly and did their best go make us feel comfortable. The location was at a quiet picturesque neighbourhood. The breakfast was a nice additional inclusion. Further, we are thankful that the property included a pick up service to and from the bus station as finding our way there would’ve been difficult. The property owner Teri assisted us with getting to the slope as we started quite late on the first day, we greatly appreciated this gesture. Thank you! The location of the property is a bit out of the way from the main strip of Hakuba (Echo land). The property also smelt of kerosene. Lastly, the wall between rooms could be more soundproof as we could here muffles from our neighbour next door - this affected our sleep.
- Joshua (10/5): Exceptional -
- Denys (8/5): Very good - The lodge was located handy to the bus shuttle. Stuff was very helpful and friendly. Room was clean. Our clothing in drying room wasn't always getting dry next morning.
- Michelle (9/5): like a home away from home - great location, excellent staff, comfortable. like a home away from home
- Anna (8/5): Very good -
- Kylie (10/5): Perfect position and local knowledge, very helpful with a difficult language barrier. - The staff were amazing. Ben and Billy were fantastic hosts, free shuttle and cooked scrambled eggs daily, Josie and Riley cooked yummy pizzas and servicing the room was a treat. Thankyou. Nothing … all was good.
- Becci (10/5): Friendly ski lodge with great breakfast. - Loved the super helpful staff, they were kind, knowledgeable and made you feel so welcome. Steep stairs to get up to the room, luckily the staff took my luggage up and down the stairs.
- Jessica (10/5): Fantastic lodge, location, and staff. Will return! - Great location for walking to Echoland for dinners, snow shuttle bus stop out the front, great short walking track with access to ski lift, and the lodge was a great size with just 6 rooms for guests.
- Cassandra (6/5): 3 day stay, what we liked and worked and what didn't - Hosts were fantastic.
Quick walk to bus stop for Hakuba 47.
15 min walk to bus stop for Cortina but the bus trip can take 2+ hours if traffic is bad.
Easy 10-15 min walk to Happo One.
Breakfast was appreciated every morning.
Only a 10-15 min walk to main road of restaurants.
Drying room had boot racks to help dry boots properly.
Cozy common room to hang out after a long day on the hill with dinner, drinks and good company available The shower temperature was difficult to control, usually had to choose between a shower that was way too hot or cold and the water pressure was average. Bathroom was also on the small side but was usable for a story stay
- Kelsey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gderun (9/5): Thank you Riley, Josie, Ben & Beth for making our stay at comfortable and enjoyable. - Had a wonderful stay at Hakuba Matata Lodge for first visit to Hakuba Valley in 2024 winter season. The lodge is close by to shuttle bus stop and walking distance to shops in Echoland. The staff were friendly and helpful. Looking forward to returning for 2025 winter season. Nothing. Hakuba Matata Lodge is a great affordable place to stay in Hakuba. Steep staircase up to lodge bedrooms may be a challenge for young kids but there is a family apartment on the ground floor.
- Wayne (10/5): Staff were helpful and friendly - Great Not mo
- Matthew (9/5): Superb - Location and staff
- Ching (7/5): Good - The staffs are amazing, they are the highlight of the lodge, very helpful and friendly. The bus stop to 47/Goyru and Happo is just right outside lodge. Easy couple minutes walk to the busy area of Echoland. We stayed in a room with a sofa bed which is on very soft, could be a problem for people with back problem. The toilet is very tiny, the temperature of the shower is hard to adjust.
- Daniel (10/5): Beautiful forest location, located right by the valley bus stop, amazing lodge hosts and lodge owner who all went out of - Beautiful forest location, located right by the valley bus stop, amazing lodge hosts and lodge owner who all went out of their way to do things for us The location is a little out of the Echoland centre so a little walk is necessary to head into town for dinner, particularly with smaller kids. But the trade off for this location is the beautiful forest location. Also the lodge owner allowed us use of an off road pram which made it easier to take the kids into town
- Darren (10/5): Great lodge in a great location with lovely customer focused staff, everything we were hoping for ! - Location of the lodge was great, easy walking distance into Echoland and a snow shuttle bus stop not far from the front door. The lodge is well appointed and the family room is very accommodating. Breakfast was great served in the lounge area which was available for use at any time with complimentary tea/coffee. The owner was so helpful with suggestions and tips prior to our arrival and the staff looking after the lodge were so friendly, very helpful and extremely customer focused. I would highly recommend the lodge.
- Marinus (9/5): super nice winter break. - very nice staff. super helpful. great bath in our room. we would like new towels everyday. too bad no laundry service
- Richard (10/5): Expectations exceeded. Will cone back for sure - Amazingly friendly and helpful staff and super convenient location. Breakfast was great. Recommend 100%
- Mike (10/5): Cosy, friendly, welcoming lodge with lots of pluses - This lodge has a lovely homey feel. Our hosts Billie, Ben, Riley & Josie were warm, friendly and helpful. The bus stops were within very easy walking distance. Our room included a private onsen that we made good use of and would highly recommend. This room had plenty of space for our family of 4 and all our luggage. Breakfast was ample and main street of Echoland only a 10 minute walk with lots of dinner options. We would definitely stay here again. The bathroom is very small, Functional, clean but tiny. Using the onsen for our bathing made it less of an issue but just something to be aware of. We would have welcomed more hooks to hang jackets.
- Richard (9/5): Staff and breakfast made the whole stay worth it. They contacted me after my booking to see and even offered to pick us - Location. Short walk from all the nice restaurants along Echoland.
- Aneta (7/5): Good -
- Benedict (10/5): Exceptional - Teri is a wonderful host. The breakfast was very good. A very cosy and personal way to stay.
- Raymond (9/5): Superb -
- Peter (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (10/5): everyone was great! cam’s omelettes were cracker in the morning. would come back again!!!! -
- Callahan (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff, great breakfast and an awesome pooch! Nothing
- Jessica (10/5): Amazing stay - We had the loveliest stay at the lodge. The whole family were incredibly kind, fun and made us feel at home. They helped with any advice we needed, cooked us a delicious breakfast every morning, and brought us along to local yoga classes and pubs, truly went above and beyond. The lodge itself is so cosy and exactly what you want to come home to after a day in the snow. The comfiest, warmest beds and a wonderful common area to hang out in whenever you like. I'm so glad we stayed there and hope we can again in the future! Thank you to you three for being such wonderful hosts.
- Evan (10/5): fantastic place, great people - Cam and the owners were great. super accomodating and helped out, especially when we stuffed up the bus times. hot taps were bit a bit touchy but I mean, it’s in the snow so what can you really do about it
- Eliza (10/5): home away from home experience - Cam the lodge manager is an absolute legend!! helped us out getting to and from the lodge to the bus stop - breakfast was 11/10 and would happily pay money for the included breakfast we received, Cafe quality!!
- Joshua (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location with shuttle's back and forth from each of the available resorts. Cameron was a fantastic host who helped us tremendously during our stay. Bathrooms were outdated but we managed!
- Judith (6/5): Hard to get around with lots of walking, adequate facilities for the budget minded. - The breakfast was very good.
The lounge room was very comfy & convivial. Very slippery just inside the front door @ impossible to put ski boots on with no seating.
Cameron our host did not give enough info for getting around or finding restaurants we could book into. We were not given assistance or advice on how to get to the Lodge from Bus station.
Onsen that is advised does not exist.
- Tsz (9/5): Superb -
- Oliver (10/5): Convenient location and friendly hosts. - Cam and Susan did a great job of making everyone feel welcome and were very helpful. Breakfast was a great addition and always made a great start to the day. Would definitely come back and stay again.
- Trent (10/5): Exceptional - Had an excellent atmosphere, and close to the shuttle buses.
- Darina (10/5): Exceptional - great breakfast! right next to shuttle bus to Happo. short walk to Echoland street for food. nothing
- Jun (8/5): Very good -
- Maidment (9/5): Superb -
- Terence (9/5): Superb - Hosts make you feel at home. Breakfast is tasty and wholesome; sets you up for a good day on the slopes. The offer to pickup and drop off to make sure you get from/ to your connecting transport is very helpful. The hot tub in Rm.1 is very relaxing. I've been spoilt by heated toilet seats in Japan. Would be nice if they had one also.
- Sally (10/5): Lachy and I had the best stay here in Hakuba. The hosts Susan and Cam were delightful and definitely made our stay. We l - We loved the communal area, the hosts and the bedroom was so comfortable, especially the bed nothing
- Karissa (10/5): Exceptional - Susan and Cam were lovely, helpful, friendly hosts. The location is great, in-between two bus stops to the slops and walking distance from echoland restaurants. I would recommend staying here to anyone
- Garry (10/5): gr8 snowboard trip - clean. away from busy central town
free bus service to ski field
great breakfast and coffee, essential if sick of Japanese breakfast noisy steps , expensive compared to some other hotels ( Shakespeare)
- Jason (10/5): Exceptional - cosy accommodation close to restaurants and easy access to the shuttle bus for the ski slopes.
Cam and Susan are amazing people which was a pleasure to share their company while we stay with them..
You won’t be disappointed with the breakfast, perfect way to start the day!
- Matt (10/5): Our first stay for skiing in Japan was fantastic, with a great room and excellent and helpful hosts. - Our room had a private onsen and was roomy for the 4 of us. The hosts were great. friendly, helpful and knowledgable about local restaurants, transport and ski resorts. Tasty breakfasts and evening meal if don’t want to venture out. nothing
