Guest Reviews
- Hendrik (10/5): My home in Nagasaki -
Alles bestens!
- Jessica (9/5): The closest home-away-from-home accommodation I've been to. Thanks! - What a lovely first-time guesthouse experience! The hosts are well-traveled themselves, and their accommodation clearly reflects this. English signs are placed throughout the house regarding rules and instructions on how to use the facilities. I really appreciated the kitchenette and eating area so that I could save some convenience store goodies for later. Hair and body wash are provided so I did not have to worry about bringing my own. Books and brochures of various languages are there for anyone to read, and the hosts even have their own maps and notes of their own recommendations (which I recommend!).
I was very excited and happy with the tatami room I chose since it was so spacious. All the rooms are equipped with heating/cooling and big windows that are nice and bright during the day. The hosts are very helpful and responsive in person as well as through messaging via Booking's website. I really felt like "I'm home!" when arriving here since it's so cozy and home-like, and away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Make sure you have change on hand for the municipal accommodation tax, which isn't included on Booking's billing. Also for a towel and/or toothbrush if you did not bring your own.
The path to the guesthouse isn't very smooth, so I would not recommend bringing big/heavy/bulky luggage. I found two ways to get there: the recommended route which goes through the residential area, but will consist of several uneven stone steps. The second option is to go from the opposite direction of the first route, taking the sidewalk next to the major road. You will still have to go through a few stone steps. I also highly recommend arriving during the day/when it's bright out, because I found the street lights to be very sparse when it got dark.
I think I went during off-season, so sharing facilities with other guests was not an issue. When there are many guests, just keep in mind that there are several toilets and sinks but only one bathroom.
- Umberto (10/5): The best place I’ve stayed at - The hosts are incredibly kind, accommodating and helpful.
- Amber (9/5): -
- Taiki (10/5): -
- Wong (10/5): The owners are really nice and accomodating. - Free bread and jam provided with coffee/tea. Comfy beds and tatami flooring. The location is a bit far but via the tram, it is quite convenient and was not a hassle at all.
- Marian (10/5): - My stay was soured by falling sick, but the place is really good, and it's nice to take a walk through some nearby districts and all the way to the Suwa shrine. The hilly views are very nice too.
The owners are very friendly and even helped me with some medicine for which I'm so very grateful!
If I stay in Nagasaki again, I'm sure to check this location first!

- Valerie (10/5): Excellent time at what I think is Nagasaki 's most underrated guesthouse! - Nagasaki Kamagiya homey vibe and cleanliness! Despite it's location, I think it's definitely an underrated guesthse that deserves more attention! Great price vs performance - for unfussy travellers looking for a comfortable stay! The stairs going up into the residences but it couldn't be helped ! The directory guide provided was very handy and accurate!
- KOUICHI (8/5): -
- Sendrine (9/5): Very comfortable - Everything was great. The bedroom was nice, the house is small and convenient. The hosts are very very nice. I would have loved to stay longer.
- Seweryn (10/5): -
- Claire (7/5): Very comfortable and quaint. - Very comfortable western beds and a cozy house with good heaters. The facilities were nice and clean. There is quite a steep staircase to the rooms and it’s a wooden house so it’s all quite loud. It’s not central but the tram gets you quite close and and the instructions provided are clear.
- John (9/5): Something like a bit of Japan around the early 20th century. - It is a big space with 2 bedrooms upstairs. Yes, stairs.. It's in the traditional style of Tanami mats in the bedrooms. You sleep on the matresses on the floor. The houses are built near a small shrine. And yes, Nagasaki is hilly, with lots of stairs. I liked it all. There was a real presence of the older Japan.
- Bedia cifrian Luis antonio (7/5): -
- Lmato (8/5): Sleeping with the Gods at Hostel Kagamiya - What a unique location.
Super neat ce people. Clean and well organized Share shower
- Xian (8/5): - The owner was very nice and friendly. The location is good, 5 min Walk to the trams. The area is quite and we had great two nights
- Flightjam (10/5): - The room was a great size and comfortable bed to sleep on.

- Beryl (10/5): -
- Luca (9/5): Pace all’ombra dei colli. - Struttura molto accogliente e pulita, host molto cortesi e disponibili. Contesto piacevole e pittoresco, buon collegamento tramite i tram.
- Jelizaveta (10/5): This guesthouse was an absolute delight! Even for just one night, we felt so at home thanks to the incredibly kind owner -
- Kim (8/5): Very good - The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, there was a common room with free (simple) breakfast, and the room was spacious. The hotel is close to a road, so you hear the sounds of traffic constantly throughout the entire night.
- Padsara (8/5): Stay Near a Shrine in a Clean and Charming Guesthouse - Very clean and cute place with kind and welcoming hosts. It's within a nice walking distance to the city, which I really loved. I stayed for 3 nights in a tatami room. The guesthouse itself was great.
Just a heads-up for light sleepers—the walls are very thin. My first night was good: very peaceful and quiet. The second night had a bit of noise but was still okay. Unfortunately, the third night was rough. The guests in the next room were walking around, talking, and moving things past midnight, then woke up early around 5–6 AM, opening and closing door. I just wish all guests would be more mindful and respect the quiet hours so everyone can enjoy their stay.
- Katharina (10/5): Exceptional - The atmosphere in the guesthouse was warm and the host very kind. Comfortable futon bed, cozy common space, great recommendation for an authentic dinner experience.
- Emily (10/5): Great - Great location, big comfortable room.
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Really friendly and kind owners
Comfortable and clean
The location near a shrine, 22mins from the station was peaceful
- Stéphanie (9/5): Very nice place, we would reccomend it anytime - The staff was very friendly. It was nice to have a room downstairs to chill out or prepare food. The parking was far.
- Jeremy (10/5): Exceptional - Owners were very friendly and helpful, room was spacious and clean. Easy to get to from Hotarujaya station. Everything was fine and I have no complaints about my stay.
- Paul (8/5): Nice local guesthouse with kind and helpful hosts. -
- Daniel (10/5): Among the greatest stays we've had - The service was superb. They were considerate of how we were new to Japan. We got to share Mongolian culture with them too. Their morning tea and toast were amazing and honestly made the starts to our days quite delightful.
They even came prepared with slippers for everywhere and city maps in many languages to help plan itineraries. When we came new to the city, they helped us find their place. They also were prepared for when we lost something to help return it.
Above all, they were compassionate about helping us to understand and appreciate Japan, which was the greatest gift. For anyone visiting Nagasaki, would highly recommend. Understanding the different types of slippers had their learning curve. The laundry service was unfortunately only available during the daytime, so after preparing our funds we had missed our chance.
- Anna (10/5): A cosy, friendly guesthouse that feels like home. - Lovely location and very convenient, the owners were very friendly and helpful. The room was very comfortable and relaxing. Definitely planning to come back form my next Nagasaki trip.
- Scott (8/5): Very good -
- Shiat (6/5): Pleasant -
- Lisa (8/5): Very good -
- Nicholas (10/5): Exceptional - Great location on the outskirts of town, close to the tram lines. Very friendly staff who remembered us from our previous stay at the property. the room was clean and cosy, with great toilet and shower facilities.
- Fam (8/5): Very good - Great experience of Japanese style accommodation, host family was super friendly and helpful.. Lovely couple. We enjoyed our stay
- Jacob (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were super nice! The dining room was nice, it even had a nice jingle playing. It has a very picturesque entrance, almost like entering a house from a fairytale.
- Nur (8/5): Comfortable stay - Private room is huge, close to the tram line, nearby konbini, amazing hosts. Located along a shrine. Quite a walk & few steep steps to reach the place. There is also staircase leading to the private rooms. If you have big luggage, it’s a workout.
- Swan (7/5): Good - Good for experience their culture with this room style
- Genevieve (9/5): Superb - Guesthouse located close to the last tramway stop, perhaps 10 min from city center. Owner is very nice and the place was clean and overall wonderful. I recommend!
- Matjash (7/5): Good -
- Alessandro (10/5): Exceptional - We love everything, the location is beautiful, but above else the Owners were Lovely, kind and super funny. We felt home, and this is the best thing one can say when traveling!
- Joao (8/5): Very good - Very nice host, amazing surroundings.
- Nicholas (10/5): Beautiful stay right at the door step of Nagasaki - great location for getting into and exploring Nagasaki. Close to the tram line, with easy access by car both into and out of Nagasaki. The Hostel its self was well kept and had a great homily feel to it. the western style room was comfortable for two travellers and the faculties provided where clean.
- Léo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gert (7/5): Not bad stay but could have been better relatively to other stays in Japan - - good signposting of how to use the airco remote control which is in Japanese: something which is done in little places in Japan
- mattress was not too hard (though was on the ground directly which is part of the negative)
- owners are very friendly
- quite some space in the rooms
- free jam and toast in the morning and iced tea in the afternoon - kitchen equipment very limited: only microwave no possibility of really cooking something yourself (not even an electric one pan heater)
- our room was next to a busy road which was noisy
- rather remote location, an uphill walk to the guesthouse
- the guesthouse is not well signposted (there is a sign but can be easily missed with all the Japanese characters). We were lucky that some Japanese neighbours helped us because with Google Maps it was hard to find the right spot. It's up stairs looks like going to some temples.
- pretty old building which looks a bit run down which leads to thinking it is not squeaky clean as the usual Japanese home stay. Though, I have to say that it is clean enough in the end
- only one shower downstairs for 6 people which is still OK, however, the shower is next to a bath which also looks a bit run down. In the end, it is OK, but compared to other accommodation (also hostels) we had in Japan, it is below average.
- have to make your own bed (sheets and pillow)
- Nguyễn (9/5): Superb -
- James (10/5): A wonderful stay in a uniquely Japanese-style room. - The tatami floor and futon are delightful! The whole property is uniquely Japanese and a wonderful experience. The room was very comfortable. The common area was clean, comfortable and well-equipped. The streetcar is a short walk away and goes all over the city. The wi-fi didn't work for me. My phone just told me I was connected without internet.
- Matúš (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff, flexibility, smooth communication, near streetcar station and supermarket, clean, laundry possibility. Bonus for Catholics especially from East Europe: church founded by Maximilian Kolbe is just 10 minutes away. Wholeheartedly recommended.
- Jamie (10/5): Exceptional - The owners were really friendly and helpful. The nearby tram stop connects with the train / bus station tram stop and the property is easy to find with the detailed directions provided by the owners.
The room was a good size and the shared toilet facilities were clean and sufficient for the number of guests. Also a quiet area to sit outside in the evening. I enjoyed my stay here, thanks!
- Hendrik (10/5): Exceptional - The owners, Yukari and her husband, and the staff made the difference, They were really nice and helpful. Everything was really clean. I had the tatami room which was really spacious. There is free tea/coffee and toast with jam which is a nice addition looking at the price. There is also a laundry service for 800 yen.
It is also located nicely, 5 minutes away from a tram station (line 3 and 5) and just 10 seconds away from a shinto shrine that you have to visit.
To reach Kagamiya, you can get tram 5 (Hotarujaya) or a taxi (about 1400/1500 yen) from Nagasaki station.
For the light sleepers, there is a road next to the hotel and the walls are thin.
If you like, the owner also has 2 kimono rental shops, one recently opened on Dejima island, go check it out.
Overall, I can really recommend Kagamiya, if I ever go to Nagasaki again, this will be my first choice.
- Emilie (10/5): Exceptional - Good location, quiet in a small street near a shrine
- Jan (9/5): Superb -
- Shannon (9/5): Superb -
- Robin (9/5): Superb - This smaller facility was tucked away behind a picturesque Japanese garden. It was walking distance to shrines and temples and we found a charming market before eventually ending up at the waterfront pier. Loved Nagasaiki and hope to return one day!
- Luca (9/5): Superb - The place is cozy, comfortable and relaxing. The hosts are very nice people and do everything they can to ease customers life!
- Lydia (10/5): Fantastic friendly place - The hosts are so kind and friendly, and helpful too. We envoyed the decoration and facilities. It is well located also.
- Paola (8/5): Lovely owners! - Extremely friendly owners, clean room, I had plenty of space. Common restroom and showers very clean, super cozy kitchen, the owners suggested me a good jazz club for my second night and I loved it!! I walked from there to the harbor and to the main attraction points but there are also buses and tramways If you arrive late at night and it is cold and rainy you might ask yourself why you chose a place far from the station, but it is only a few stops by tramway and when you arrive the kindness of the owners will conquer you!
- Rabah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ramakanta (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tiffany (9/5): Superb -
- Sébastien (10/5): Exceptional - Our host were very nice and helpful. The lady of the house was so kind with us, especially as my wife is a huge fan of kimono.
The futons were very confortable, some of the best we had in Japan.
We will be happy to come back if we return to Nagasaki. A little bit far from the town center and a bit noisy as there is a big road near.
- Tanja (9/5): Superb - The hosts are great, the house is nice. I am not used to shared bathrooms, but everything was clean, so no need to worry. Love the room where it is possible to have breakfast. The amount you have to pay for the towels you use is reasonable...
- Michele (8/5): Very good - Very helpful owners. Lovely more traditional style Japanese accommodation. Lots of steep steps to reach accommodation.
- Feraz2022 (10/5): Exceptional - Hospitality, beds, and authenticity. Location bit far away and some stairs to climb! Be aware with big luggages. But overall they are good.
- Nattapan (10/5): Warm and comfy. - The place is very clean and comfy. It's a great experience staying in a Japanese style room. The owner is very helpful. There are free bread and jam for breakfast in the lovely kitchen.
- Gordon (10/5): Exceptional - Yukari-san and Kou-san are the warmest, sweetest most helpful people we have met in a nation of warm sweet people. They made our stay here so special. And we love their guesthouse. A little old and worn but so comfortable and like home. And the quiet lane that leads from the tram terminal to their place, past the Torii gate, seems to lead into a gentler, more real Japan. There is also an excellent shopping street 10 minutes away (with a great Italian restaurant.)
- Fvrther (10/5): The cherry on the top - This stay was the cherry on the top of my Kyushu trip, by far. The place is a bit far but the warm welcome from the owners is worth every yen. If you're looking for human authenticity and a place that feels like home look no further ! Nothing, I wished I could have stayed longer ^^
- Christopher (10/5): Wish I could stay 3 nights - Friendly owners on hand, beautiful tatami room with views of mountains and forest. Quiet neighborhood and beautiful area. An easy and fun 8 minute tram ride from center. Walk to inn was easy to find the way. Great price
- Benita (9/5): We enjoyed our 2nites stay at Kagamiya - Cleanliness of bathrooms
Bedrooms n kchen Just a bit only in walking goin to find d haus
But after getting in and meeting d host it was all
Good
Very thoughtful n considerate hosts
- Jokubas (10/5): Excellent stay, the owner is very welcoming and helpful! -
- Jean-david (10/5): Great place to stay to explore Nagasaki - The owners are absolutely lovely people and were very welcoming, making me feel right at home. The place is very nice with a comfortable room and nice shared space for the kitchen/living room and bathrooms. I was travelling by bike and the location was great, a bit out of the city center but within easy reach. It is also located next to a very nice temple.
- Thomas (10/5): A fantastic place to enjoy Nagasaki - Only a short walk from the tram line / not many rooms providing an intimate setting / owners were very friendly and helpful, even when I made mistakes with our room key / directions provided for reaching the property were very thoughtful / quiet and calm at night time. -
- Muni (9/5): Superb -
- Diego (10/5): Nice, traditional stay at a wonderful city - The owners are extremely gentle people, had a great time staying here. The futon is really comfy and warm, the traditional bath is great, and the location is wonderful (near the Hotarujaya tram terminal). I fully recommend it. Nothing to mention
- Philippe (9/5): Traditional, very quiet. A good value. - Very kind staff. Traditional house in a quiet area. Not far from various shrines. Clean and confortable. A little far from JR station but tram 3 is available to reach it.
- Marie (10/5): Very japan with heart - It was just very nice to stay here. The Room is was quite big and the view from the window nice. The location is very pretty. But a bit outside. For me it was okay.
- Claire (9/5): Absolutely wonderful place and people would highly recommend. - Wonderful staff and facilities. It's very traditionally Japanese but still comfortable. The little breakfast included was a perfect start to the day. The futons are as comfortable as they can be given that they are the old style. They are still quite uncomfortable but that's not the fault of the hotel, simply that futon are not the best.
- Lee (8/5): Very good -
- Tan (7/5): Good - Location was good. Some areas were not clean.
- Dw (8/5): Very good - The hosts are so nice. The Japanese-style guesthouse was very comfortable and in a peaceful location. Comfortable beds. There's a small kitchenette area with a microwave, crockery, cutlery, fridge/freezer. Tea & coffee available all day plus toast & jam for breakfast. After check-out, we could store our bags at the guesthouse until the evening when we caught the night bus. -
- Spencer (10/5): It was an amazing experience in a beautiful city with rich history - The rooms were amazing and there was completely toast We loved everything
- Connor (10/5): Excellent Japanese style stay! Run by a very nice couple! - Great for experiencing a proper Japanese style room with tatami mat floors and a futon bed. It’s also very spacious! The facilities are clean and modern.
The couple who run the guesthouse are lovely and very helpful. They speak good English so easy to communicate if you don’t know Japanese.
- Sandrine (10/5): Lovely owners, comfortable room - The owners are exceptionally nice people, we loved spending some time with them. The room was big, clean and comfortable, they even offer free breakfast. It was a perfect stay. Nothing, all was very nice.
- Andrew (10/5): Nice owners, nice location, beautiful city. - Owners were incredibly lovely, and gave recommendations about the city.
- Tom (10/5): Exceptional -
