Guest Reviews
- JOHN (9/5): Excelled my expectations - Views to riverside from accommodation Perhaps an en suite
- Richard (9/5): - Perfect location
- Leo (10/5): - I stayed there because it seemed close to both the railway station and the Maltsters concert venue.
Both were a 5 minute walk!
The view of the Great river Ouse from my bedroom was sublime.
I got up at 6.30 after having slept unusually for 7 hours but I then noticed that the breakfast was only from 8am so I took a walk up to the Cathedral and found that due to the "morning prayers" the side door was open, soni went in and had a couple of minutes photographing!
When I got back at 8.30 I was really looking forward to breakfast. The decaf coffee was one of the best I have tasted, the self service cooked breakfast was tasty. The muffins were delicious and so was the miniature fresh fruit salad.
My only criticism was that they used UHT milk for the cereal but had fresh pasteurised milk for making the teas and coffees!
I was well impressed and will happily return and pay to properly visit the Cathedral and if possible stay longer at the "Riverside inn"! UHT milk for cereal whilst fresh milk for teas and coffees
- Michael (8/5): Great location. Comfortable room. - Decor, quality of bed, most particularly the location I didn’t receive an email letting me know the combination number for the front door, and where to park.
- Jesse (10/5): Excellent location and a wounderful stay. - Excellent location! Close to Ely Station, Ely Cathedral and downtown areas. We were allowed to check in early. We had to check out before breakfast started to catch an early train. Friendly staff. We would definitely stay again! The hotel does not have dedicated parking. Since we had to check and early train, we parked at the train station and made the short walk to the hotel.
- David (1/5): NO PARKING - No parking on site, we had to park away from the property, but no room for us to leave the car to get into the hotel. We didn’t stay, we found a hotel with parking.
- Steve J Clark (10/5): - Very clean, great location, good breakfast choices. None
- Mike (9/5): -
- Judy (10/5): Our expectations were exceeded. - The location was stunning. Everything we needed was in the room. I was grateful it was a ground floor room though I had not asked. (Was that because I had ticked the “over 75” box? The breakfast was a little disappointing. No fruit and the scrambled eggs were rather overcooked, but that was the only thing, and besides it’s a guest house, not a 5* hotel!
- Fraser (10/5): -
- amanda (6/5): - Great location Breakfast on the sparse side, had to keep asking for items to be topped up.
- Jennifer (5/5): Lacks the personal touch, expensive for what it is. - Location, lovely and clean, coffee at breakfast is lovely. Advised plenty of parking but Ely festival meant finding a space was difficult so not a relaxed arrival , both pubs said they regularly have guests asking for assistance.
Main problem was the building was so hot . Advised it was too early in the year to switch on aircon. Had paid extra for a river view which I had planned to sit and read by but was insufferably hot. The second night we had to sleep with the front and bathroom windows open to get a breeze. However this meant we were regularly woken by the outside noise from the railway and waterways.
First morning at breakfast 8-9.30 we arrived at 8.50 am there was no eggs left and was told that once it is gone it is gone! As a non meat eater I therefore had a choice of cereal or croissants! Ten minutes later the waitress offered to ask for more but did not think it would happen! Second morning there was plenty but choice is limited to bacon, sausage, grilled tomato and scrambled egg.
Coffee in rooms is horrid, Toiletries for second nights stay was not replenished.
No personal feel as everything is done via text message.
- Jeremy (9/5): - Great spot on the river All fine thank you.
- lisa (10/5): - Was lovely , clean and welcoming If I had to pick the only fault I had it would be to have baked beans with breakfast
- Martin (7/5): Generally efficiently run and well-located - The room was rather compact, but spotlessly clean. The ensuite a fair size and well-furnished with towels (bath 'sheets' a real bonus).. Provision of a coffee machine and bottled water for same a plus.
Housekeeping was generally very good, as was breakfast service.
Hands-off self-service access to room went smoothly.
The location, by the river and a small park, was charming, although be prepared for a walk up to main high street and shops/restaurant area and places of interest. For a stroll by the river on a pleasant evening, however, the location was excellent and was a short walk to both the railway station and major supermarket. Just as well, as buses in Ely appear to be virtually non-existent and there is no place to hire a car, whatever about local van hire. We did try to cool the room down by opening windows, but a request for a lighter quilt and/or lowering the room temperature was not addressed, although we left a note for housekeeping after our first night.
The breakfast was OK, but no variety in the cooked items. The coffee was the best we had anywhere on our trip and the breakfast staff were very pleasant. Actually, the only time we ever saw staff was at breakfast. The venue seems to operate a hands-off policy, which can be a benefit, but a 'hand up' the steepish stairs with cases would have been welcomed on our arrival as there is no lift. Guests were also left in no doubt that breakfast finished at 9.30 a.m. when staff started to clear away, so not really served until that time as such. We noticed one couple arriving at 9.25 who were taken aback to see items disappearing into the kitchen.
- G (8/5): Beautiful room in a good spot - Location was by the river and close to the train station. The room was comfortable and the rooms amenities were very good. If the breakfast offered was better I could agree with the price but it was a little high for a poor breakfast.
- Colin (9/5): -
- Maureen (10/5): - I just love riverside inn because it's very quiet and it's in a lovely area plenty of benches to sit and watch the boats and people going by. My stay wasn't long enough.
- Kenneth (9/5): Very pleasant - Room was very nice and bed was comfy. Nice large bathroom. Excellent breakfast too. The room was getting too warm - not sure if it was because the heating in the bathroom was on and I couldn't turn it off because the control panel was locked. Because of this I had to open the windows to cool the room but it was a bit noisy with the windows open.
- Liz (10/5): Excellent stay, staff fabulous, food great, clean, modern and well equipped. My only advice for people thinking of stayi - Everything No parking
- Rob (10/5): Beautiful views and quality accommodation within easy walking distance of the station and cathedral. - Excellent location right on the river and only 10 mins walk from the station. Superb quality throughout and spotlessly clean. The breakfast was beautifully presented and included hot meals as well as fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt, fresh rolls and muffins, and of course freshly made tea and coffee. Only a 10 min walk to the cathedral through the park. Perfect! The bed was very comfortable but the pillows are very high and solid - luckily I had brought my own! Everything else was wonderful.
- Teresa (10/5): We very much enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back . - Finished to a very high standard ,Spotlessly clean , comfortable,
Nice Location , excellent breakfast. Parking , had to park down a side street.
- Bastian (8/5): Perfect location for a weekend break in Ely - Clean comfortable nicely decorated . Nothing
- Bastian (8/5): Perfect location for a weekend break in Ely - Clean comfortable and nicely decorated I had 2 rooms booked the 2nd room in a different part of the building
- Christine (8/5): Pleasant Stay - The Riverside location. The room and facilities. The breakfast was okay but limited in choice. I had a small single room with a bathroom across the landing. As an older single lady it was slightly daunting. It wasn't immediately apparent that the bathroom was private and for my use only.
- Gabriella (8/5): Adequate - Typical fare. Attitude of the person I spoke to on the previous day. Very dismissive.
- Kim (9/5): Great stay. Lovely boutique hotel with riverside views - Immaculate, stylish and good location. Friendly and helpful staff. Everything was good. Parking could potentially be a problem, as no car park.
- Heidi (10/5): - The property was exceptionally clean.
- Wasyliw (8/5): - Lovely stay and a very nice clean comfortable room.breakfast was good
Parking was a bit difficult on arrival and had to search for a while until somewhere came available however after that it was ok.. Hubby dissappointed no fried eggs for breakfast.
- Kelley (10/5): - Very comfortable and clean room. Breakfast was exceptional with good coffee.
- Christian (8/5): Schöne Lage direkt am Fluss - Schöne Lage direkt am Fluss
- Michael (9/5): Great location. - The cleanliness and furnishings.
Staff at breakfast were professional and polite. Quilt on bed very heavy as were the pillows. But this could be a personal preference.
- Weeks (5/5): It was ok but not worth the price . - Situation and decor very modern . Cold room temperature preset .Breakfast limited and cold .Seats for breakfast too low . No lounge for guests .
- Mary (8/5): Excellent - Excellent breakfast and the location was perfect, right on the river. Lovely bathroom but my only problem was there were no safety handles to help getting in and out of the shower. As above the shower was difficult to get in and out of with no safety handle also the stairs were very awkward getting cases up and down.
- Antonia (10/5): Great riverside location for exploring Ely. - Great location right on the riverside. This guest house is beautiful and our room was outstanding - better than a lot of more expensive hotel reserve stayed in. Breakfast was excellent with lots of options and high quality food. Everything good.
- Boatright (10/5): -
- Summerfield (10/5): A lovely professionally run facility in a nice setting - The accommodation is spotless and fresh. Modern facility with lovely decoration. Air conditioning available if you keep the windows closed. Only real background noise is the nearby railway but not noticeable with the window closed. Lovely eateries within a couple of mins walk.
Would definitely recommend the place. Had no problem parking in the public parking area but could be busy during peak season.
- Mark (9/5): Perfect - Very efficient on check in . All immaculate. Nothing
- Anne (8/5): -
- Helen (10/5): Beautiful hotel and great location - Beautiful hotel and great location.
- Peter (8/5): Good location for short break - Good location, comfortable well appointed room, good breakfast Walk in shower rather than over bath shower. Personal preference
- Ally D (8/5): - Great location, room was clean, breakfast was good Hall light should be on a timer as it was on all night
- geoffrey (7/5): - The room was very good. The breakfast was a bit limited and sitting in very low seats not ideal.
- Yolanda (8/5): -
- Fiona (5/5): Good location, clean and comfortable but room very small and thought overpriced. - Breakfast was good if you were a meat eater. Not much choice for vegan or vegetarian. Staff polite but not very friendly. Felt there was a tense atmosphere and it was made clear they wanted everyone finished and out by 9.30am
- Boyd (6/5): Nice bedroom, nice outlook, terrible parking and terrible staff (Owners) because this was not clear - Location on the river is very pleasant The staff were very rude, when travelling for work, 8.00am - 9.30am for breakfast is too late. Tried to have some cereal and toast at 7.45am as I could smell bacon and sausages being cooked. Staff were very unhelpful and didn't speak English, that is until she asked me what my room number was, so I think it suited her to pretend she didn't speak English when it suited. Car parking is a major problem at this property ..........keep away, its not helpful to arrive with no where to park. This is an easy solution for the owners to make an arrangement at the local pub opposite to pay for parking in their car park, but the manager of the pub shared that no one had ever approached them with this solution, which is very easy and suits everyone.
- Gill (7/5): Great guest house - Great location, very clean and well stocked. Breakfast very good. Bed a bit high. Room a bit warm.
- michael (9/5): Excellent - The location was lovely overlooking the great Ouse. Very quiet and peaceful. The room was very pleasant and perfectly clean and the breakfast was very nice served in a quaint little dining room. Overall a wonderful experience. The only thing to note is parking. We parked in a nearby car park about 400m down the towpath but was free
- Rachel (8/5): Great location and facilities - Room, breakfast, staff and location The key was left in an envelope at the front hall table with my full name and room number. As a solo female traveller I said this was not good practise and my concern was dismissed. Full names on these envelopes is not needed, just surname and initial, to make women travellers feel safe.
- Patricia (10/5): Wish we could have stayed longer. - Breakfast was excellent. Lovely view from the window. The room was warm and comfortable.
- Alan (10/5): Great little inn with comfortable beds and a good breakfast. - We liked the decor, the bedding, the breakfast, and the staff. The room was a little small but nicely decorated.
- James (9/5): A very comfortable and clean place to stay. Pretty location by the river. - The location is pretty, adjacent to the river busy with barges and rowing boats. The accommodation is clean and well furnished. At night it was very quiet, although the pouring rain would have kept people indoors.
- Lisa Marie (10/5): Absolute gem! ❤️ - Everything was perfect! Thank you so much, will definitely be back. Nothing
- Hubertine (8/5): Would recommend..alas a tad expensive. - The location, the room, decor, the coffee and free biscuits, the ease of getting in and out, the cleanness...overall very attractive, inviting and exceptionally comfortable. Very early and limited time for breakfast, especially for a weekend. The early checkout at 10am.
- Keith (8/5): Stylish sophistication: tranquil river scenes and sounds - I had a room with a view over a lovely stretch of the river. Many boats moored; fisherman waiting patiently for a bite: a picturesque working river scene. Many dogs and their humans passing by, clearly enjoying the riverside atmosphere. Even the semi-distant sound of trains crossing the river at night added (in my view) to the tranquil rhythm of my stay.
Although the room was compact, the quality of the fittings were excellent in both the sleeping room and in the bathroom. This emphasis on delicacy and quality appears also in the breakfast. The technology of the check-in worked smoothly, as did the key system to the room door and bathroom. This is not a dislike about the property. However, guests arriving by car and wishing to park very near to property need to be lucky and / or patient to find a free overnight parking space: locals and visiting fishermen might stay parked for some time each day.
Having said this, the City of Ely offers free (limited time) public parking at various locations around the city and historical centres. The next time I visit Ely and choose the stay at the excellent Riverside Inn, I might choose to travel by train: Ely railway station is about 10 minutes walk from the property.
- Danuta (9/5): - Decor, comfy bed, excellent shower. Breakfast choices. Location. So easy to walk to and from train station as town. Only staying one night!
- Nathaniel (9/5): - Clean and tidy Nothing
- Nick (10/5): A lovely, classy place to stay with great attention to detail. - Fab location. Beautifully decorated. And great breakfast. Very comfortable. That we didn’t stay another night!
- Gemma (10/5): - Very easy self checking
Lovely and clean, very comfortable.
Good location just a short walk, nice pub across the road Nothing, it was a lovely guest house, but if I had to pick something it would be no mat inside the front door to wipe our feet, especially with wet weather outside.
- DEAN (10/5): Good value for money . Would highly recommend - Great location. Easy Check in . “REALLY”comfortable bed. Excellent Breakfast. Very clean . Friendly staff. 10 out of 10 .Would highly recommend. Nothing at all.
- Brian (10/5): -
- Shaw (8/5): Lovely rooms but lack of customer service was my only real issue. - Really great clean room. Fabulous bed and very clean. There is no reception, which is fine but they say they can be contacted via various means. However when I contacted them asking a few questions about parking etc, the replies I got were, 'just read the info on booking' but what I was asking was not on there. Felt like I was being an inconvenience rather than a valued customer.
Also nothing owners could do but room 6 & 7 are at the side entrance and noise disturbance was a big issue.
- Raymond (10/5): A great location to visit the area, everything in walking distance . - Location was excellent right by the river and a pub close by . The accommodation was very clean no problems . At the weekend no parking problems but in the week it’s restricted early in the mornings
- Wilkinson (10/5): -
- Ken (8/5): Useful location -
- EDNA CLARK (9/5): -
- Victoria (6/5): - The rooms are small but pretty, bed and pillows very comfortable. A nice coffee machine with pods, milk, tea bags and biscuits. That was a nice little touch. Powerful hot shower. They have daily cleaning if required.
The only friendly face I saw was a short blonde haired woman on Sunday morning. Very pleasant... I wouldn't class this as an Inn. More air BnB. I booked this on the basis it was an Inn as I was travelling alone so wanted to be secure in the fact someone was on site.
I was in room 7 upstairs. They are incredibly steep so if you have any issues with stairs this is not the room for you. They do have rooms on the ground floor tho, so I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem.
I did not sleep for 2 nights as there is zero sound proofing and downstairs made a hell of a lot of noise. Also the light from the landing was shining through the door at night...:/ I was going to mention it to the manager/reception but when I asked the girl at breakfast she was not overly friendly so I just left it.
The same day my phone broke. I went back to the property to ask if I could use their phone as my family would start to worry. They would only speak to me through the door bell and couldn't have been more disinterested if they tried! This was really disappointing. Her words were well we don't have a landline here soooo...
I do the same job in Spain (manager) and could not imagine not trying to help a guest in this situation. Customer service in this way was shocking.
For this alone would not return.
Just a little side note. As nice as the rooms are..the showers do need to be cleaned better as they have mould.
- Terry (10/5): our experience was exultant very good - everything nothing
- Denise (9/5): Good stay -
- Jason (7/5): Very good. - Very clean and exceptionally well presented room. Very good breakfast. Super location over looking the river. Whilst the single room came with its own dedicated bathroom; the actual bathroom was across the landing. Parking was on the road close by, was definitely not a guarantee.
- John (9/5): -
- Justin (10/5): A romantic spot for a nice getaway. - A great place to stay for a few nights for nice get away. Our room faced the canal and we were able to order drinks at the restaurant next door and enjoy them from the comfort of our room with a great view of the canal and boats. The bed was very comfortable, the shower worked great. I liked the two high-back chairs. The breakfast was exceptional. Traditional fair, but done nicely. The breakfast space was very comfortable. We love Ely and this place is right on the water with an easy pedestrian walk to the cathedral and High Street and easy walk to the train station. Definitely would stay again. Not much to complain about. The price was a bit high I thought. Recommend getting to breakfast on the earlier side to ensure a full selection (e.g., the fruit ran out one morning when we arrived at 8:30 am).
- John (3/5): To say we were disappointed with our stay at The Riverside Inn would be an understatement. - room was very clean
breakfast just about adequate We stayed at The Riverside Inn on 2 nights in May before my sister's funeral in Ely cathedral, choosing a 4 star hotel where we could have some quiet time beforehand.
Whilst we knew that the room booked (room 6) was not river-facing, we felt the price paid (£312) was excessive:
• We found bedroom and bathroom to be small, dark, claustrophobic and not easy to move around in
• Hall light stayed on at night with shafts of light around the side of the bedroom door making sleep difficult
• Atrocious soundproofing. Guests in the upstairs bedroom clearly audible, speaking normally
• The room was stifling. Temperature control required turning on loud air-con making sleep even harder. For security, my partner was not OK with opening a ground floor window
• We had to pay for parking when advert stated “Free Private Parking is possible on site (reservation is needed)”
Pointing out the issues was met with excuses giving the impression of an owner who doesn’t do customer service.
However, the owner did say our disappointment was “understandable” - but offered nothing.
Most annoying was the parking. Because of the funeral, we didn’t want the stress of finding on-street parking, choosing The Riverside as a hotel with free, off-street parking. Having made the hotel booking, we booked private parking and were disappointed at the £10 charge. It was NOT free as advertised. As the charge was only revealed after the non-refundable hotel booking, this felt sneaky.
We wouldn’t have made this booking had the parking details been stated accurately. We have reported the issue to Trading Standards and The Riverside Inn is on their radar.
Reporting has had an impact because the owner has changed the way parking details are shown - a tacit acknowledgement that the original details were misleading. Refund please!
Overall, we found Room 6 overpriced and uncomfortable and with the parking issues and the perception of wriggling and poor customer service, we won’t be staying again.
- steven (10/5): Lovely guesthouse, great room, perfect location - Nice spacious room with view from ver the water. Perfect location, walking distance to all attractions and amenities. Good breakfast. Room by front main door so we could hear people coming and going. Workmen operating in the room directly above us, very noisy all day. No notice or warning was given prior to our arrival.
- Clare (9/5): -
- Corey (9/5): - Staff really friendly and helpful
Room beautifully decorated and really appreciated the under floor heating.
Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice and delicious coffee TV in room 6 was in a very strange location 🤔
- Garry (2/5): Nice room with a good location but the staff are non existent. - The room was nice with a good location The staff, there was no one to greet you or tell you about your room on checkin. It was all done through a ring doorbell!
- Shanique (9/5): Great location - Great location, nice staff and easy check in Rooms are very small for the price. The breakfast was okay.
- David (1/5): I would never stay there again - Location It has to be the smallest room I have ever slept in. We were down to breakfast five minutes late, we had no idea the breakfast finished so early, when we asked if we could have anything we were told that they were too busy clearing up. We weren't even offered coffee and a piece of toast! The lady was so rude!
- Michael (8/5): - Perfect for attending a function across the road Bit pricey for a one night stay
- Geoff (9/5): Excellent stay, very friendly staff, lovely room -
- Denis (7/5): High quality but small and not worth the £154.80 room charge. - Forst class fixtures and fittings as well as decor. Room allocated was small and cramped. Fortunately we had no large suitcase and it was only for one night. Size of room, soundproofing from room above was poor in that you could virtually hear the conversation as well as use of the bathroom.
- Tracy (10/5): -
- Terry (10/5): - Fantastic stay Nothing
- Joycelyn (10/5): -
- Jennifer (1/5): No parking nowhere to unload bags be warned. - We had to find somewhere else to stay so cant comment on anything nice. Booking.com listed this property as having free parking. It does not. Nor does it have a dedicated space to drop off bags. Given the booking was non refundable once booked if you are on a road trip with luggage and a car find somewhere else to stay. Ely has extremely limited parks available for travellers and we spent 2 hours looking before we gave up and found somewhere else to stay.. Once the issue presented the staff (not on site) could not have been less helpful and understanding they were at pains to point out somewhere in their email they had said there was no parking available but given the Booking.com confirmation said parking was available I didn't spot that the opposite was true in their confirmation. When we arrived the woman on the phone was very much tough cheese too bad not our fault it's your fault you are on your own. Very cross at Booking.com for misrepresentation but when you use a site and only offer non refundable bookings you have an obligation to ensure their information is correct or to provide a refund instead of sarcasm.
- Jane (9/5): Everything we expected & good value - Very clean, room in good decorative condition & lovely view of river
- Graeme (10/5): Absolutely gorgeous - Absolutely delightful. Exceptionally clean and beautifully presented. We parked but it could potentionally be a problem.
- Jonathan (9/5): -
- John (9/5): Just what we needed - Good location and views of river. Easy walk to town.
Nice breakfast Poor parking
10am is an early check out but we knew this
- Beverley (10/5): Just perfect … we would definitely stay again - Perfect location to explore Ely and the surrounding areas. Small comfortable guesthouse and thoughtfully furnished. The room we stayed in had everything we needed. Clear, timely and informative correspondence. Lovely breakfast and helpful friendly staff. Not applicable
- john (10/5): - Booked on behalf of my partner to attend a company function.
She was very happy with her stay
- Gerard (8/5): Great riverside stay. - Its riverside location and an easy walk to the cathedral. The breakfast was a little limited if you’re dairy intolerant.
- Philippa (10/5): Excellent city break . - Lovely location by the riverside and very near the town centre. Able to visit the Cathedral easily. Good restaurant and pub in close proximity. Parking a bit tricky but managed to find a space eventually.
- steven (9/5): Excellent place to stay for your visit to Ely - Location was excellent and relaxing by the river.
Breakfast was excellent, quick & simple. Parking was an issue, would advise to book the private parking as soon as possible.
Room tv was an issue as it was stuck on Apps & couldn’t get normal tv. Wasn’t an issue for us as we didn’t stay in the room long enough to watch it.
- Oliver Morton (10/5): - As above, was a great trip and a lovely place to stay Was really happy with everything especially the location.
- Trevor (10/5): - Beautifully decorated
- Gus (10/5): -
- Lorraine (10/5): Accident in every way -
