- Jon (8/5): Great overall stay, cool stylish rooms, friendly staff and brilliantly located. - Great location and really well designed rooms. Staff were really helpful when I accidently locked myself out of my room and the Thai restaurant downstairs was really good. Would stay there again when in the area. Espresso machine in the room was a nice touch. Wasn't made clear that breakfast didn't start until 8am on the booking and I had to leave earlier than that for work, so I wasn't able to enjoy whatever breakfast was on offer (that I'd paid for and no offer of a refund on that part of the booking). Quite messy in the corridors, which was a shame given the rooms were very tidy and clean.
- David (7/5): Unmanned, quiet, better to find on foot, clear entry instructions - Very comfortable bed Not so much about the property but I couldn’t find the 6 parking spaces they said they had, the off street parking was only until 18.00 and the entrance to the road the hotel is on which my Apple Maps was telling me to go up is no entry!

- sarah (2/5): - breakfast was nice the best part of the stay the whole place needs a make over very shabby our room was next to a room of tumble dryers constantly drying

- Roland (10/5): Perfekt für Ausflüge auf der Isle of Wight - Perfekte Innenstadtlage, kurze Wege, super schönes Zimmer, tolles englisches Frühstück
- Ralph (10/5): Great! -
- Graham (8/5): - Good location
Great restaurant
- Justin (9/5): - Great location. Staff were amazing. The place was nice and clean. The wifi was also fast and reliable except the router I think got pulled or powered down around 8pm so I had to rely on my phone's hotspot (wasn't an issue for me but could be for others). No other issues with the place. Would stay again. The mattress was the basic 'spring' affair but I suppose it is what it is.
- Eunice (4/5): Won’t be returning - Breakfast was in the pub opposite and very good AC not working.
One small window that opens
Room was made up of oddments of wood
No fire instructions
Several broken tiles on bathroom floor
- Angela (10/5): - Lovely hotel, very comfortable and the Thai restaurant downstairs amazing. Very handy for the bus station wich was a pleasant surprise
- Virginia (9/5): - Its décor
It was very spacious The WC was too low and the bathtub too high but we managed
- Chris (10/5): -
- Matt (8/5): Great central location. Clean & well designed room. - Great central location. Friendly welcome. Air con - which for once in the UK was very welcome. Good sized room & bathroom. Personal taste - I found the bed a bit lumpy & a bit short for my 6'1 carcass.
- G (10/5): -
- Steve (9/5): Another great stay - Great location, great rooms, qwerty decor.
Self check in works well.
Nice air con Nothing much, noisy seagulls, but that’s nothing todo with the hotel
- qradix69 (9/5): Great staff, amazing food. The breakfast was also superb value for money. - The food served in the Tai restaurant was amazing 🤩 Bathroom had repairs that’s didn’t seem finished. However we appreciated that the hotel has recently opened.
- Brown (10/5): - Everything was beautiful Nothing only thing we were not able to turn the TV off
- Suzanne (7/5): -
- Carl (7/5): We enjoyed our time there, it's our first time staying at a B&B in a city setting instead of seaside - I liked the spacious bathroom, breakfast in the pub across the street was unique but food was delicious, the thai restaurant was chef-kiss. The location is super handy, with the bus station only within 5 mins walk away as well as the supermarket & shopping areas. Unfortunately, the seagulls make a lot of noises at silly-o'Clock but that is nature, nothing can be done or helped with that, a lot of seagulls hanging out in the town, regardless.
- Elisabeth (8/5): -
- Rachel (6/5): Stayed two nights and it did its purpose but wouldn’t go back - Great location Room wasn’t as clean as it could be my 7 year old found nicotine patches under bed and window sills very dusty, the shower is only good if your small otherwise you can’t stand under the head
- nicholas (9/5): -
- Ben (10/5): - Lovely property in central location
- Veronik (6/5): - Host was quite friendly. Thank god for the air conditioning in the room as it was really hot out. Room is pretty.
- Debra (8/5): - The accommodation met our needs. Thank you
- Laura (7/5): Great location, friendly staff. - Great location. Helpful and friendly staff. Bit noisy outside in the night. Bed a bit soft for me, but that’s just personal preference.
- Louise (10/5): - Beautiful room with great air con which we needed during the heatwave:
Nice breakfast and nice staff.
We would recommend
- Marlene (7/5): Short Stay Okay - The Bathroom was modern. Location good. The Pub across from accommodation was very good and good breakfast included. No lift. Smallish room. Close to a church and Mondays seem to be church bell ringing practice that went on for close to an hour.
- Philip (8/5): - Central location is good and bad as close to bars and restaurants but noisy after closing. Good sized rooms are individually decorated. Reception area is kinda awkward. Fob access doors often don't secure properly and were found to be ajar.
- Ruth (8/5): - Location was excellent. Welcome by staff was great. Short walk for parking at the Apollo theatre. Shower over the bath. Bath was slippery.
Room was clean.
Went for a pre stay before IOW festival.
- Robert (6/5): -
- Roman (10/5): -
- Sue (8/5): - Lovely and quirky hotel. Bit stuffy at night. Very convenient for bus station
- Derek (8/5): Great location with sizable rooms and friendly staff when available. - Location, size of room, friendliness of staff (but only available at certain times and days), breakfast at Wheatsheaf across from hotel. Access to staff at weekends.
- Sanjana (10/5): -
- Masahiro (7/5): - ファミリールームを利用しました。部屋が広く4人でもゆったり過ごせました。
- Sophie (8/5): -
- Annette (10/5): - Quite a quirky property. Our room was large with a comfy bed and plenty of storage.
Large modern bathroom. Coffee machine, kettle, iron and hairdryer.
The staff are really friendly, nothing is too much trouble.
Breakfast is at the Wheatsheaf, a short strole across the square.
On the ground floor of the hotel is a Thai restaurant, Thai by Ja, serving the most delicious food. I can highly recommend it.
The hotel is close to shops, restaurants, pubs and the bus station, with buses to take you all over the island.
Rooms are on second and third floors and there is no lift.
- Melissa (9/5): - The space, it was clean l, central and just what we needed. The room was too hot and the air conditioning unit did not work properly. It would help if you could open the windows in the room. We had a fan but it was just circulation hot air.
- Chalmers (5/5): - room was very clean, nice coffee, ac was good. shower was powerful. very noisy, windows not double glazed, or able to shut properly. door In hallway banged loudly.
- Judith (8/5): Excellent value for money and well situated for local amenities - It’s quirkiness and lovely big room with lots of space for three adults Nothing really
- Richard (7/5): Ok stay but man the seagulls start early. - Central location. Funky rooms. Seagull noise. Hot rooms.
- Jonas (10/5): -
- Donna (3/5): Not worth the money. - The big bath. The loud, endless, abusive and agressive shouting & screaming from drunken men and women each night. During daylight hours the sea gulls and the pigeons added to the constant noise pollution.
The room had not been cleaned and inspected after the last tenant as there was a condom - still packaged thankfully, and a tube of cigarette filters under the raised bed.
- James (8/5): -
- Nikita (10/5): - Great stay for a holiday, accommodation was right in the
- James (10/5): - Everything Nothing
- Christine (10/5): - Wonderful room. Not a bland, typical hotel room at all. Good lighting, towels of a good quality, great storage, table/desk space. Coffee machine!
Bonus to have had breakfast included - a good breakfast too. Dinner at the adjacent Thai restaurant very nice.
Owner bent over backwards in helpfulness and care.
- Pete (7/5): Great location (if you need to be in Newport), but you'll be looking after yourself - The Charter House is located right in the centre of Newport, so everything is within walking distance.
Room was nicely decorated, and the bed was very comfortable. It's a self service hotel, so there's no one around if there are problems - like there being no hot water for a shower in the morning - assume having a bath in the evening used it all up - but theres no way of knowing...
The access code for the room key arrived 10 minutes after we checked in.
Oh and the church bells - trying for a quick nap before an evening on the town, and had a solid 30 minutes of bell ringing practice.
- donatella (10/5): -
- Christopher (4/5): We have stayed in worse accommodation, but not many. We were disappointed to pay that money - Breakfast offered very limited choice. It was OK if you wanted a cooked breakfast but poor if you wished to have other options.
The bed was comfortable
The TV worked and provided some variety of channels. The toilet had not been cleaned when we arrived. The toilet flush mechanism was broken. The sink plug was not working. Windows could not be opened in the bedroom and so we opened the bathroom windows but these banged in the night. There were only 2 coat hangers on arrival but the landlord found some more.
The end of the bed had split wood which was sharp.
We understood that there would be parking but this was incorrect although we were able to park a short distance away without charge.
The ring on the key fob was loose
- Megan (10/5): -
- James (10/5): Wish could of stayed another night - Everything Nothing
- Hannah (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Martin was extremely friendly and welcoming. Large room, very clean and good facilities. Nothing
- Annette (8/5): A lovely central position near pubs, restaurants and a beautiful church. A short walk to the bus st - Breakfast was at the pub across from the hotel. Lovely breakfast, staff were welcoming and friendly.
Set-up works very well.
The Thai restaurant on the ground floor, which was part of the accommodation was brilliant. Absolutely delicious food, lovely welcome, really friendly. Maybe a little more information about checking in.
- sharon (10/5): Outstanding service - The welcome from the staff members and friendliness. Informative None
- Rob (4/5): - Unfortunately not a great stay for a business trip. The hotel is not staffed so you are messaged to complete registration prior to arrival, this should then be followed up for check in details. This did not arrive so I had no access to the hotel nor know which room I was to check in to. I had to disturb the restaurant staff who appeared to be on a lunch break at 3pm and they then had to search out my details, there was some confusion and delay but they helped as best they could.
The location is very central but noisy with bars and the restaurant below. The parking directions are not great and the local multi story closes at 7pm and on Sundays is not unlocked until 9am so not ideal, I parked on the outskirts of Newport and walked in.
The room was noisy as it was next door to a laundry room which appeared to be in use until about 9pm, again not ideal when needing an early night for work.
Finally the room itself was not very clean, tv remote was caked in dust and grime, toilet and shower not cleaned, the coffee maker covered in stains. There was no reception area or clear contact details to raise any of these concerns with frustratingly.
- Kate (10/5): Staff exceptionally helpful and friendly - Quirky building, nice rooms All good
- Kevin (10/5): -
- Laura (8/5): -
- Gregory (10/5): Perfect.and central location. - I stayed at Charter gouse for business over the weekend. What amazing rooms, so individually done, the look is amazing.
Really spacial room and amazing bath in the bathroom.
Fibre WiFi really fast too, which is essential in business trips for me.
What is also great is the restaurant joined to the hotel at the reception area. So you do not have to leave the hotel.
Amazing Thai restaurant, that gets their food from aithentic sorces imcluding some from Thailand.
Would so recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a stay in Newport, perfectly central place to stay in the IOW.
- Summer (10/5): Comfortable and lovely - Very well kept, love the rustic design. Friendly and helpful staff. Restaurant down stairs was amazing. We’re coming back in May. Nothing
- Amanda (6/5): -
- Rebecca (10/5): Lovely space in old Newport - Great location, huge room, nicely decorated and friendly staff! There were some works going on but breakfast across the road was still great! Room surpassed our expectations - perfect for three friends travelling. Nice to have coffee and water in the room
- Janet (10/5): - No comment No comment
- Jamie (8/5): -
- Andy (10/5): Our getaway haven made even better with new Thai restaurant - Location is great, Martin and his team are brilliant, rooms are comfortable and well decorated with good air conditioning.
Thai restaurant down stairs is absolutely superb and fantastic value for money. Nothing!
- Mark Mcloughlin (10/5): Excellent town location - Nice rooms right in the centre of town with loads to do around you
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Antigoni (10/5): - Lovely room, warm and cosy. The staff were lonely and friendly
- Jo (10/5): Amazing - The place was great! Super central location and the family room was perfect for our group of friends. Check in was easy. The host was very responsive and friendly. The car park was close by and the included breakfast at the pub across the square was delicious! A proper english breakky. Would definitely stay here again.
- Ian (10/5): - great
- John (10/5): Super restaurant and great value - almost worth a special trip to IoW. - Lovely old building housing both a small hotel (6 rooms) and a superb restaurant, Thai by Ja, expertly run by Ja and Martin - and with a 15% discount for hotel guests. At £101.75 for the room and breakfast, plus £35.50 for a super meal with two beers, it was a bargain. Almost worth making a special trip to the Isle of Wight for.
Hotel check-in is self-service, based on pre-registration and an SMS to tell you your room number and the codes needed to enter the hotel and access your room key. Unfortunately, I didn't get an SMS and arrived to find a locked door quoting an emergency phone number that was diverted to voicemail. However, there was also a sign saying the restaurant, whose entrance is just around the corner of the building, was open. There I found Ja's other very friendly half, Martin, who let me in and gave me the key to my first floor room, room 2. Note that there is no lift and half the rooms are on the second floor.
My room was spacious, with a rustic look but it had both underfloor heating and a Daikin heating and airco system plus a modern bathroom. Ja (or Martin) had forgotten to put out any towels but this was quickly remedied by Martin.
The room had a spacious cupboard with 6 clothes hangers and a safe, plus a chest of drawers, two bedside tables, an old workman's table as a desk and a fan, as well as the very comfortable bed, two antique industrial stools, an armchair, a Nespresso-type coffee machine, a ketlle and a hairdryer (see the comment below about the shower). For my taste, there were two minor negatives: I don't much like hotel rooms with carpeted floors or so-called rain showers, above the bath moreover, which mean that it's difficult to shower without getting your hair wet. There was ample lighting and some 8 power points, though none in the bathroom. See above
- Linda Burton (5/5): Good location. Room OK but claustrophobic. Breakfast good. - Location was excellent - central & near to bus station. Ventilation in the room was poor. Only 1 window opened a little & room stuffy. Also found snail in washbasin one evening after getting back from meal out.
- Daniel (6/5): Pleasant and clean but don't expect a good night's sleep. - The room was very clean and was uniquely decorated and the hotel itself was centrally located so most of the island was in easy reach by car. The mattress was very uncomfortable and the hotel's proximity to pubs and clubs meant that our sleep was often broken drunk people shouting and arguing through to the early hours.
- Salma (8/5): - We stayed for 1 night in the weekend, the place was clean and spacious but the lights were a little dim and the bed squeezed a lot each time one of us moved. There was also lots of noise from outside.
- Catherine (8/5): Pretty good!! - We were surprised there was no real person to check in with- it was fine, but I would like to have known.
Not all the room lights work
Nice and quiet at night
Nice hot water
- Heike (7/5): Unterkunft würde ich empfehlen - Lage, Frühstück Organisation des Zutritts und Schlüsselempfangs sowie fehlende Info zu Frühstücksort
- Sharon (8/5): - Very quiet, quirky, gorgeous bathroom and air con if needed. The carpet hadn't been hoovered so it looked grubby. No teaspoons in the room to stir your coffee/tea.
Bar/restaurant wasnt open as I think its being worked on.Plenty of pubs/restaurants in walking distance.
- Elke (10/5): Great location and views in a quirky hotel - Small hotel in a converted building. Great décor and fantastic views of the Minster and square. Perfect location just 2 mins from the bus station and all local amenities. Clean rooms and towels. Free water, hot drinks and toiletries. Terrestrial TV. Massive bathroom. The huge bath would benefit from some hand rails as difficult to get in and out and very slippery! The shower was powerful. There are no staff on site so you need to call a mobile number if you need anything - we did not so all good. A delicious and generous hot breakfast was served in the Wheatsheaf pub (right opposite the hotel). I would definitely return to this hotel and Newport is the perfect location to discover the island.
- EL (10/5): -
- carl (5/5): no response - nothing staff not contacting me to rearrange booking or answering their reception phone.
so I the end had to pay for a stay which I never attended.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fabulous Hotel - Lovely accommodation, very stylish design. Good facilities in the room. Breakfast was excellent and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.
- Norma (8/5): - Hotel was in a good location and breakfast was nice. Hotel is advertised as having a bar but there isn't one.
- carol (10/5): - The only trouble was. Which was not really your fault, the two nights we were there we had a couple have a fight out side.
- Howard (8/5): Good, but could be better - Overall it was value for money, clean comfortable with an excellent choices for breakfast . However only a couple of niggles, there was only one hand towel instead of two, no hand soap , parking is a pain had to use an overnight car park 5 minutes walk away which in decent weather is ok however this weekend was torrential rain and we got soaked going back to our car. Also , no one on duty when we checked in so couldn't ask anyone about towels soap etc and though the shower was working it was not working properly. Understand they can't do anything about the parking but fix the things that are under their control and the stay would have been better and don't like that there wasn't anyone around to help if needed.
- Paul (7/5): - Location Noise from street, broken window blinds and incredibly noisy firedoors.
- Ryan (9/5): - Nice room, different decoration to the standard hotel room which I as a nice change. Room was big and bathroom spacious as well. Bang in the middle of Newport No parking by the hotel but loading bay outside for drop offs and whilst the hotel has parking, we found you could use a tourist permit with the people that operate the council parking and car parks. This meant we could park almost anywhere on the island.
- Charlotte (10/5): - Great property! Would reccomend. Easy check in. Very spacious room and very clean. Slightly noisy outside in the mornings with bin men so be sure to close your windows however this is to be expected as in the middle of a convenient square. We loved our stay. Thank you!
- Smedley (10/5): Lovely stay here would recommend it , they did nice breakfast - Was cosy room very clean Nothing
- G (9/5): - Breakfast Extra payment for parking
