Guest Reviews
- Marco (10/5): -
- Frank (7/5): Nostalgically quaint; but needs renovation. - The restaurant food (dinner) is actually quite good. Unfortunately, I had to leave early in the morning and was unable to eat breakfast there. Old fashioned appeal with oak furniture. It is a very old hotel, but my understanding is a new owner will be renovating it. The doors/walls are thin, the bathroom linoleum is pealing up, and there is only one electrical outlet in the room.
- Kami (8/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): -
- Diana (10/5): Lovely place to dpend a night - Well kept, antique furniture and great restaurant
- David (10/5): -
- Joseph (10/5): - Room was very nice but the shower dripped loudly. We reported it immediately but was not fixed within the 2 days we were there. Second floor rooms are directly above the saloon causing us to endure loud music until nearly 11pm both nights. There was no ice in the large ice container on 2nd floor causing us to go to the bakery downstairs to get some.
- Paul S (10/5): - .
- Rick (6/5): - Okay
- Javier Ochoa (10/5): - nb
- Lila (8/5): Antique place - Very old but unique place. Long flight of stairs to room with no help from staff with luggage. Fortunately I'm a fit 78 yr old. Very small room and had to drag an extension cord around for blow dryer, curling iron, & phone.
- FERGUS (10/5): - Great atmosphere, friendly people, idiosyncratic decor. I stay here every time l'm in Alturas.
- William (9/5): Had a very nice stay but the midweek dining options in the area are very limited. - Privacy and large room Nothing
- Peggy (10/5): - This is a very old, historical hotel so don't expect fancy amenities. However, it is very well kept up and comfortable. The staff are all very sweet and the room includes delicious pastries and coffee each morning down in their hotel lobby. The saloon has great food at night plus there's a great hamburger place or Thai restaurant just down the street. It IS haunted so have fun reading up on all of that history!!
- Lynda (10/5): We really enjoyed our stay. - Breakfast was very good. Room was comfortable. A great value!
- Karen (8/5): This period hotel has original furniture and comfortable rooms. - This is a beautiful old hotel with original furniture and artwork in sitting rooms and in the library. Our room was actually two separate bedrooms with one bathroom. Lovely old mirrors and light fixtures added ambiance. It was very comfortable.
Breakfast was at the coffee shop on the first level - a Starbucks. I remember choosing from the menu and it was good. We didn’t know that the rooms are on the second floor and there is no elevator. We had a bit of gear and 2 road bicycles to haul up a red carpeted grand staircase.
- Kathleen (10/5): Experience a great old hotel from the past - Didn’t know what to expect but wanted to experience the past. Loved the building and was surprised to see how much was kept old. The beds and pillows were perfect for all of us. Loved the sink in the room and the bathroom separate. Some of the old photos hanging on the hall walls, the eyes would follow you as you walked by. If stay there again in a heart beat.
- Teresa (7/5): - Met our needs, nothing fancy. Rooms were themed. Ours was western. Free coffee and pastry in the morning. No tv, no elevator, walls very thin, people next door very loud till 4 a.m.
- Frederick W (8/5): - Historic hotel in a quaint town. A lot of stairs and no elevator or tv. Comfortable and quiet and free Starbucks coffee and pastry in the morning. Be sure to arrive early because everything closes at 9am.
- Mazen (3/5): -
- Robert (6/5): - It was a quaint effort at keeping an old hotel going. Dining was good. Starbucks in lobby. Had local flavor.
- Rebecca (10/5): - It was good staff was friendly, everything was clean. The bed was uncomfortable for me but thats my preference.
- Joe (10/5): pleasant surprise. thank you and your people - I had dinner. the waitress worked her butt off. I didn't catch her name but she was working the 25th.she deserves a raise. I didn't realize you didn't have a TV in the rooms. I'm a TV guy!!!!!! I went down to have dinner which was great and than went to the bar with the local yokels. I had a blast. very friendly crowd.
- Jeffrey (8/5): Very good -
- Smith (3/5): overall a quaint place. It was pretty worn, but still comfortable. being above the bar was bad - I love where it is at and the history. The bed was very comfy and so was the room. Very quaint. Bar was LOUD. I was over the bar, and thought that Wed and Thurs would be ok to stay the night, but there were patrons with one of them screaming, whooping etc and standing on the bar. I went down there to have a beer around 930 and was ignored. I just went back to the room, but couldnt go to bed until 12ish because of all the noise. I am all for a good time, but it was the yelling and screaming that got me.
- Brooke (9/5): This is like stepping back in time and staying in an old historic hotel - This is a charming, historic property located right off the highway. The rooms were good size and comfortable, and the staff were incredibly friendly. The coffee shop and restaurant and bar on site are huge plus.
- De (10/5): We came to Alturas for a 40th High School reunion and decided to stay the Historic Niles Hotel, truly was an ideal stay - The historic Nile’s Hotel was a great place to stay in Modoc County California. They offer a courtesy drip coffee and pastry every morning and there is a restaurant and a separate bar inside the building as well.
The hot water seemed endless and the water pressure was perfect for our showers. The only thing that I wouldn’t like is a tub bath, but since we didn’t have children it wasn’t an issue. The shower was just fine.
- Karen (8/5): - Charming, unique. Yes it’s old and could use some maintenance. However I really enjoyed this hotel. The staff were friendly and caring.
I was disappointed the dining area was closed in the morning and all they had was tea and coffee with a muffin. Which was delicious by the way.
Also I left really early but couldn’t find anywhere to drop my key off as all the doors were locked.
So if you leave before 7:00 am it’s a problem.
The keys are not cards.
Don’t expect any refrigeration or microwave in the room.
There was shampoo, conditioner, soap , hairdryer though. There was a fan in the room and books.
I hope to come back
- Fred (6/5): - No sink in tiny restroom, No TV. Old. Property has potential, but Alturas isn't exactly a tourist mecca. A big upgrade would be too expensive for most investors.
- Jaroslaw (10/5): - This is not a modern hotel, so if you're looking for that, this ain't it. That said, I had a wonderful time. It's like staying at a museum. It's clean, and the bathrooms work perfectly well, but it is an old structure with its quirks. It's like cilantro: you're either gonna love it or hate it. I loved it. Everyone on staff was super friendly and helpful. If I ever end up in that neck of the woods, I'm staying there again. Staying at Motel 6 or Super 8 is usually not memorable, and if it is, it's probably for a wrong reason...
- John (6/5): Pleasant - Our room was directly over the bar, and it was noisy until about 2 am
- Gabriele (4/5): - Asked for 2 queen beds and they came in 2 rooms. Rooms were connected.
- Mary (8/5): Very nice historic property - We loved staying at this historic hotel, but a couple suggestions… additional
Electric outlets would be nice especially in the restroom, had to curl hair and the only ones found were under or behind furniture and hard to get to. Also a TV would be nice!
- Doug (8/5): A Time Machine back to simpler era - Lots of history and historical flavor. Our bartender Annette was very nice and fun to talk to.
- David (8/5): - Historical
- David (10/5): - The staff went above and beyond what would be expected.
- Nicholas (10/5): comfortable and maybe haunted some would say - i loved the old character , staff were very kind and actually showed me to our room
- Frederick (6/5): Nice old western hotel is a work in progress - Check in was smooth, room was small, but we expected that given the age of the hotel. Room decorations gave it a bit of a cluttered feeling, but the themes were fun. Mattress too soft, bathroom clean and well stocked. Nice gathering area in the hall near our rooms. Restaurant was comfortable, food OK, staff friendly. Nice book reading area and a sign that says if you can't finish the book, take it! And I did. No coffee available till 0730, breakfast not available till 0900. That's tough for overnight travelers. Street parking is necessary for luggage retrieval, but seemed safe. No elevators, but again not unexpected.
- Capt (8/5): A fantatsic bit of history. - I've stayed here before. If you want atmosphere and a bit of old-time charm, or even faded gradeur then this is the place for you! Each room has its own character, and the bar is well stocked, and the conversation is easy. If, however, you want a coffee in the evening (after the coffee shop has closed) or some hot water for tea, then you are out of luck! For travellers from cities, it is easy to forget that in a place like Alturas, EVERYTHING has shut down by 8 pm, so make sure you have an early dinner. This is a great staging post for adventures off into the wilds. Would have been great to get a coffee in the evening.
- Suzanne (10/5): - It was great!
- Stacy (10/5): - Love staying here every time I’m in Alturas!! The staff is the best there is. Charming rooms with history.
- Cole (10/5): - Fun place to stay!
- Paul (10/5): - This is a very quaint and older hotel, but I've stayed here three times because I like it so much. The rooms are charming, clean, and have unique character. Also, the beds are comfortable and the staff friendly. The hotel even has its own saloon!
- Stacey (10/5): - Excellent
- Alyssa (8/5): - The beds were super comfy! Unfortunately, one of our outlets nearest the sink didn’t work. The staff put heaters in the rooms for us since it was cold (New Year’s Eve), and that warmed the space nicely. It was fun being the only patrons at the entire hotel! The Niles is always an experience you don’t want to pass up, but know it’s an old hotel so temper your expectations for modern amenities.
- Rodolfo (9/5): Superb -
- Julie (8/5): - I always stay at this hotel when I visit Alturas.
See you next year!
- Michael (10/5): - Old hotel with lots of charm
- Christine (10/5): Unique and charming property - clean and fun - Very unique and historic property - well cared for and in good shape. Plenty of space and clean. Fascinating place. Karaoke night was downstairs when we arrived, so a little noisy for a while (plus some interesting characters hanging around outside), but it was quiet and comfortable for the night. A bit spooky in a fun way. One of the only lodging options in a relatively rural/rustic area. Would definitely stay again.
- Sara (5/5): It was interesting, and fine for one night, but I don't think we would choose it again - Neat history and the refurbishment was well done for historical effect. Getting a free coffee and pastry for breakfast was a nice surprise. True it's a 100 year old building (which is cool), but it needs to better meet the needs of a modern traveler. Not nearly enough outlets, no place to put anything in the bathroom or even in our room.
- Jeff (8/5): - This is a historic hotel so creaky floors and noise travels well but it was charming, comfortable, and a good experience with the historical experience in mind. A very fun stay and experience!
- Evgeniya (8/5): Very good -
- Dorothy (3/5): I wouldn’t stay there again, but I would visit the restaurant. - I liked the vintage building and the historical atmosphere. I ordered a very tasty Modoc burger with garlic fries in their restaurant. It was more than I could eat and a good value. The waitress was sweet. The drain in my bathroom sink was clogged. Running water would start filling it up and then small black hair would float and then water started coming up the bathtub drain as well that smelled horrible. The room was very hot. The small window a/c unit was loud and didn’t cool the room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Can’t recommend - Seemed to be a lack of employees to effectively run the hotel. Just a shabby, dirty hotel that had no elevator. No clear entry door. Inconvenient parking. Needs some cleaning, repairs and updating.
- Benjamin (6/5): Decent - Old hotel. So-so bed comfort, but not bad. Impatient and slightly rude cleaning staff. Same for restaurant staff. And, an overall good deal. Not much privacy in rooms, just the older building.
- Benton (10/5): - Very nice I like!!
- Bryan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Terri (10/5): Great find in Alturas!! - Love the old style atmosphere. Karaoke on Saturday in front of the Polar bear pelt was a blast!!!! We will be back!! Best garlic fries and Modoc burgers too!! We will be back! 😁 N/A
- Katherine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sonja (7/5): Good -
- Kenneth (8/5): Very good -
- Leita (10/5): The Hotel Niles was lovely, homey and staffed with wonderful people. We would definitely stay again - The breakfast pastries were excellent, the coffee great, and the service was just the best. Everyone is very friendly and very helpful. We felt right at home! It was a relaxing atmosphere.
- Ed (4/5): - Okd
- Anita (10/5): I’ve wanted to experience the Niles and all the history in this old building and I’m so happy I did. - The people are wonderful and friendly.
I mostly wanted to stay in this restored 111 year old Hotel. I’m so glad I did. I wish the room was cleaner and more recently painted. I understand how hard the water is but I didn’t want to use the tub/shower.
- Jennifer (9/5): Superb -
- Jbotts (7/5): Good - The history of the hotel and the vintage feel. Our room was very, very warm. They only have window AC units and had forgotten to turn it on that day. We got up very early with little sleep just because it was so warm in our room. We were told since it was Sunday not much was open in town including the restaurant at the hotel. 😞
- Lisa (8/5): Very good -
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing and affordable - Great historic hotel for the adventurous. The staff was amazing. We had adventures here and a great night's sleep. Highly recommend. Also, we used the EV charger in the parking lot.
- Stacy (10/5): - Awesome place!!
- Thomas (7/5): Comfortable old historic charm - Given there are not a lot of options for accommodation in this part of California it was a good comfortable place to stay. It's very old, which we liked and expected. Given that, it has a worn and old feel. This is not bad. It's historic. If you are looking for a posh spa experience then it's probably not for you. It was just what we expected and the overnight car charge was a big bonus.
- Joan (8/5): Loved the ambience of the place. The staff are great as well. - Very cool historic hotel! Rooms are small, but it’s to be expected with the age of the hotel
- Jeff (10/5): Definitely worth a stay when you are driving the 395 - Great location, antique hotel very well done. Restaurant and bar site are very good
- Heidi (10/5): Pleasant Surprise! - Good service, nice people, very quaint historical hotel.
- Jamie (9/5): Beautiful, met beautiful people - I came after 48 years. I once taught at MODOC HIGH. CAME BACK RE:BUCKET LIST. Need to see what changes, not many. Lot of businesses closed. I went fishing , the places es where I took my daughter fishing changed. People were nice when I left are still nice. Enjoyed my return More beautification for city delapatated buildings.
- Margaret (10/5): - Nice quite. Good food
- Richard (8/5): Very good -
- David (8/5): - A step back in time. This is a well-refurbished classic hotel from the early 1900s. On the date of our stay, the saloon and the restaurant were closed, but included with the room was a coupon for each of us for a Starbucks coffee and a pastry.
- Joe (8/5): Very goood. - The young man who welcomed us late the night we checked in was very helpful and friendly. I believe his name was Dakota. The staff we encountered in the morning was nice too. The bathrooms were pretty small. I know it comes with the territory of an old hotel though. Nice, neat place in general.
- Lisa (10/5): Cozy, comfy, friendly helpful staff - Friendly helpful staff, clean rooms, cozy Nothing
- Virginia (10/5): Exceptional - A quirky wonderful old building with quirky wonderful updated rooms. I liked it all - even the staircase to the second floor.
- Michael (8/5): Good for many - Was a great hotel for something’s but lacked a couple of things that I was hoping to have noteable a desk and a microwave but the rest of the hotel is very nice with a cost feel
- Juliet (7/5): Beautiful & charming rooms. - Beautiful charming building with loads of history. Comfy beds.
- Sky (10/5): Wonderful, easy and charming - The staff were so nice! Nothing
- Sarah (1/5): Freaky abandoned place - There was hot water. The towels didn't smell like bleach or fabric softener. This place was freaky! There was hardly anyone there. The floors creaked. The internet didn't work. The restaurant wasn't open. It's an empty tomb. The person who checked me in was nice, but the person in the coffee shop where you go to redeem your coffee and pastry coupon was rude. Someone walked up and down the halls in the early morning and stood outside my door for a bit. The town is deserted. I will NEVER stay there again!
- Marta (10/5): Hotel Niles is the best hotel in Modoc County and is a must-visit to feel the history of Alturas. - We have been to Hotel Niles a few times and have had a great experience. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The hotel is old but charming-- it captures the history of the hotel and town which is interesting. In the forgotten part of California, this boutique hotel is the best place to stay. It even has a Starbucks but in a quaint setting. We ate at Niles Roadhouse which served excellent food (steak sourced locally). Our favorite was the Saloon, a bar that has karaoke on Saturday nights, filled with friendly locals who are open and fun. (They have a polar bear hanging on the wall!) The hotel is old and has some minor issues with infrastructure such as the electrical. They need more wall outlets for charging electronics.
- Mary (7/5): Good - Antique and ambiance Room was very cold and no heater to adjust
- Ace (8/5): - Great staff wonderful people. Not a lot of bells and whistles!! But nice!!
- Larci (7/5): Good -
- Sandra (8/5): - Lovely old hotel with themed rooms. Just a bit too much decoration for my taste. Really appreciated this hotel in this small town. Good food too.
- Lee (10/5): The coolest hotel I’ve ever experienced! - Everything! Nothing. It was amazing.
- William (10/5): A visit to the past - No TV, bar /restaurant closed Sunday. No breakfast just coffee & muffin.
It is very historic & interest
- Robert (8/5): Very good - Convenient location in an historic town that time has passed by. Old hotel but very serviceable. Worth a visit. For a property of this age and location, no complaints.
- Halley (8/5): Very pleased! - Excellent service both checking in and at the bar getting food.
Room was clean and the bed was very comfy. Definitely will return!
- Ashley (10/5): Cute and quiet - Cute historic hotel. We got in late and only stayed for one night. Loved the character of the place.
It was nice that they offered a free coffee and pastry.
- Christopher (4/5): Not worth the price. - 100 y/o historic hotels, no updates, no TV. Room door was jamming, window A/C, barely cooling down the room. Not worth the price.
- Gregory (10/5): - I love these old timey boutique hotels!
- Lynne (10/5): Great updating of an older building. - Staff was wonderful. Room and bathroom clean. In the center of town. Breakfast coffee and pastry fabulous!!! Highly recommend.
- Vern (9/5): Superb - The restaurant was great. Can't think of anything.
