- blueoceanjunkie (10/5): Brand new, beautiful hotel at a convenient location! - This hotel is brand new! Everything was SQUEAKY clean and the bathrooms are very modern and updated! Not the usual bathrooms you see at this price point or with this brand. The staff was wonderful also and Aldi is within walking distance which made stocking up snacks very easy! Very convenient location to the rest of downtown Alpena also - places like Walmart, Meijer, Applebee's etc were just within a few miles. Highly recommend!

- 805tmc (2/5): Go To Hampton Inn & Suites for a Great Stay! - There is a much nicer hotel in Alpena and it's the Hampton Inn & Suites! This place is run so unprofessionally. If you have an issue at all, they do not care about their customers. If you look closely at their reviews they've had issues with bed bugs, not following their own policies, etc. They must be very desperate for people because their GM Jonna is one of the worst managers I've ever dealt with. Trust me, you'll get much better service at other hotels in Alpena.

- Cello12345 (8/5): Location, location, location - The location of this hotel is excellent - along the river walk, and a block away from downtown restaurants. We enjoyed the river view suite with sitting area - but the windows were incredibly dirty, enough that we really couldn't enjoy that view! I've never seen hotel windows that dirty. All that said, the hotel was very comfortable - good breakfast, and the room was so well insulated that we couldn't hear the adjacent elevator or ice machine. And we loved the "constant fan" button on the thermostat - this feature made it possible to run the fan for white noise without sacrificing heat or AC. And the refrigerator had a small freezer, perfect for our ice packs to restock the cooler for the next day.

- vilnisj2025 (2/5): Too Late Warning – Reservation Canceled - Very Disappointed – Reservation Canceled Without Notice I have stayed at Holiday Inn Express Alpena for many years during the annual Northern Strike exercise. This year, our confirmed reservation for a group of international travelers participating in a military exercise was automatically canceled on August 4 while we were traveling from Europe to the U.S. The hotel later explained that their system canceled our booking because the card on file could not be pre-authorized — but this policy was never disclosed during booking. As a result, our group was left without accommodation upon arrival. Only thanks to the support of Alpena CRTC staff and friends already staying at the hotel were we able to secure rooms for the following nights — while we were still driving from Detroit to Alpena. Despite this help, we had to spend the first night in military barracks and pay higher rates for the remaining nights than our original booking. Even after contacting IHG Guest Relations, we received no timely resolution or compensation. IHG should clearly state this policy and ensure loyal, returning guests are not punished by an automated system. This disappointing experience has made us reconsider staying with IHG in the future.
- Andre (2/5): - The „Welcome“ was not a welcome at all. Very rude stuff. Indoor Pool was „out of order“. Only after we asked for the pool they put a sign out. TV program was very limited. All these topics with a 4 year old girl is hard to accept. Probably never again even we know that the people Up North are a bit more „rough“ but this was a No No.
- Kathleen (6/5): - Beds were not comfortable, too soft. And the pillows were terrible, one super firm and one felt like 1/2 the feathers were gone. Area around was fine but staff was not welcoming at check-in.
- Terry (6/5): - The property was excellent in every way. However, the charge was $20 more than the Expedia rate. When questioned, the desk clerk indicated that the extra was due to Expedia, so the rate was the full rate of the hotel. Very disappointed.
- Candice (8/5): Convenient and Easy Stay - Family friendly and convenient location. The Holiday Inn Alpena is close to restaurants and the local parks and is in the heart of Downtown Alpena. The room amenities are basic and meet the daily needs. Shampoo and soaps were all Dove products. One area I would like to see improvement is the beds. They are medium firm yet left me with a back ache. The top blankets are duvet and it’s shifts in your sleep. The hot breakfast was nice and met all our needs for our family of 6. The food staff worked hard to ensure items stayed stocked. The employees we interacted with were very friendly and helpful.

- Denise (6/5): Great hotel with an unprofessional manager - Daytime manager demeanor is off-putting. I reserved a 2 night weekend stay. Upon check-in, I asked to cancel the second night. The evening clerk said that I would need to contact Hotels.com to do this as that is how I reserved my stay. I did so and they contacted the hotel and issued me a refund. The next am, when I turned in my keys, I was confronted by the manager saying I was still registered for the second night. I explained that I had cancelled via Hotels.com as instructed the evening before. I also showed her the emails from Hotels.com showing that the cancellation was done and a refund issued. She kept saying, “but in our system you are still here for another night. I explained that I’d done what I was asked to do by the evening check in host and couldn’t explain why it was still in their system, particularly with th the confirmation and returned partial payment. She then said, “ well, good luck with that “ as though she doubted my effort to cancel would be successful. Normally, I wouldn’t care about a conversation like this but with several family members living in the area and many relatives who have come into town for funerals recently, this manager’s unprofessional behavior and dismissive approach are reaching legendary status. It’s a shame because the hotel is very new, nice and serves a good breakfast

Please don’t turn into the old Holiday Inn/Ramada. Breakfast is fantastic and staff is kind enough…but I can tell that they don’t care much about the guests.

The chair in my room had a very questionable stain The staff is ok...all be it they would rather talk to each other than take care of guests. 3 of us checking in at the same time atopd there for almost 10 minutes before anyone even showed up to the front counter.

- 1028Travel (10/5): Wonderful Stay - Very nice hotel, easy to locate, plenty of parking and within walking distance of shops and restaurants. The room was spacious and everything was clean and comfortable. There is a complimentary breakfast but we did not participate. Krystal was at the front desk when we arrived. She was friendly, pleasant and extremely helpful recommending a restaurant. She even came up to our room to help us with the TV when we couldn't figure out how to find a channel we wanted....above and beyond her job description.

- 357donaldg (2/5): security of room - I was very upset when I came back to my room and found my room door left open and definitely was not locked. I did not enter in the room until I talked to somebody from the Holiday Inn and the only person working was taking care of a customer checking in. I can’t believe you have only one person to act as manager, check-in counter and everything else. He could not help me until he was done with his customer. There is no one there for security? I was told that a guess as what happened was that a new maid must have left the door open by accident. Before I left my room, I placed the card that says to not disturb and I gave my dirty towels to the maids that were on the 1st floor and I told them that I do not want my room cleaned or entered. They gave me the new towels that I asked for and I left. When I came back, the front desk man came with me to check out my room since the door was left opened, and we found our room had been cleaned up, beds made, and the no disturb sign was laying on the floor in our room. My conversation with the maids and the no disturb sign was just ignored. Is this the way Holiday Inn Express does business in Alpena? I don’t care to ever come back because of the lack of security and no one there bothers to listen to what I ask of them.

The air conditioning seemed a bit off - taking it down one degree blasted cold air for an hour. Also, the new TV program guide was very difficult to figure out and use.

- BonB (8/5): Good location, comfortable - We stayed one night at this newish hotel. It was conveniently located, with some restaurants within easy walking distance. Room was clean and comfortable, with just one small glitch -- the message light on the phone started blinking at about 3:00 a.m. and wanted a passcode to retrieve messages. Entering the room number didn't work, so we covered it up with a dark T-shirt so we could get back to sleep. I mentioned it to the front desk the next morning, but they had no idea what the passcode was either. We enjoyed the included breakfast prior to checkout.

- Luvtotrvl96 (10/5): An excellent Holiday Inn! - Our stay at this hotel was excellent. We had a Riverview room that was very relaxing. Breakfast was plentiful and we appreciated the coffee/hot water availability 24 hrs a day. Our only complaint was direct tv which suddenly stopped working on us twice during our stay (no weather related issues). It will be wonderful once cable tv is installed - hopefully very soon! The general manager, Jonna Radle, personally came up to our room to fix our tv the first evening we were there. She was friendly, very helpful, and took the time for us when her shift was very busy. I saw her several times during the weekend and can attest to her true servant leadership. The hotel staff worked together and several spoke of Jonna’s hands-on work with her team. I will say this group worked very hard to insure customers’ needs were met. Thank you!! We will return when we travel back through Alpena!

- Robin (4/5): Bad plumbing, rock hard beds. No fun! - The plumbing was pretty wacky. Anytime I flushed the toilet, there'd be a loud knocking sound followed by loud squealing. I also heard it from other rooms. The shower pressure was so bad, it literally felt like someone was peeing on me. I have stayed in a fair few Holiday Inn Express hotels, but the bed on this one was incredibly hard. I woke in with back pain. I would not recommend this hotel. It absolutely is not worth the $200/night fee. I would like a refund.

I could not locate local channels, the golf channel was listed, but unavailable on the TV and I could not utilize my own Streaming Stick on the TV as an alternative. Less of a problem if staying just a night or two but I was here for a working week, so I noticed it more.

- Trip02106423988 (2/5): Don't book here - We had a reservation here for two nights to attend a funeral in town. They charged my credit card with a pending charge at 2:37am on the day of our first night. We arrive in town at 11:30 pm and they said they were overbooked and they do not have a room for us. They sent us to a Days Inn. The Days Inn clerk indicated that this happens often with the Holiday Inn.

- STACY (10/5): Good place to stay - We arrived later then we planned but that was no problem for us checking in. The employees were super nice. The 1st room we were in smelled like a sewer was backing up but they quicly and easily changed us to another room. Breakfast service bar was great. Alot of choices and the employee was very friendly, greating people when they came in. If i had to say a negative thing about the stay it would be the size of the poole towels. Very small.
