Guest Reviews
- charles (10/5): - Very friendly service. Well renovated room. Excellent location
- Fred (8/5): - Good spot for an overnight stop on the loop. Staff friendly and helpful.
- F2934UFlm (10/5): Perfect place to stay in Mae Sariang - This place is a gem! Wonderful staff, clean and comfy beds (some of the best had in Thailand), hot shower with amazing pressure, a pool, plenty of exercise equipment including a bike, treadmill, weights, yoga mares, etc. Plus delicious breakfast! We wished we could have stayed another night. Highly recommend this place.
- Deborah (4/5): - Room was very basic and dorm-like. We had a cockroach in the room (I know it’s a hot country, but only place we saw one in our hotel room during out 7 week trip) Breakfast was basic. staff were very helpful and friendly.
- JohnnieC841 (6/5): Adequate - The check in is swift and friendly and there's some parking onsite. There's a pool that looked fine but we didn't have time to use it. The room doesn't have a safe but has Aircon and fan.
The room looks superficially clean but certainly the bathroom needs more elbow grease. Ours was on the ground floor and we shared with at least 1 lizard and a cockroach.
This is not 3 star accommodation, not even close, but in Mae Sariang, quality accommodation is thin on the ground. That said this hotel will suit some travellers absolutely fine.
- BarbGrae (10/5): Perfect - should have stayed longer - brilliant accommodation in Mae Sariang. The rooms are quiet due to being at the back off the property away from road noise. We were in a ground floor room furtherest from the pool - perfect for us.
Wonderful host, very relaxing, sparkling clean pool, large super clean rooms with concrete floors.
Parking onsite, Free push bikes & gym, breakfast included, cold beer available at a good price, evening meals available on site too. Noticed many people coming from other hotels to dine here due to the gorgeous outdoor setting and relaxed atmosphere - good prices.
We only stayed 1 night, should have stayed 2 and used it as a base for some R&R before continuing on our journey.
- Michelle (2/5): - Bad experience.
- Theo (10/5): - Mooie accommodatie. Goede vlotte ontvangst. Mooie grote kamer met voorzieningen. Prima.
- Gek Choo (10/5): - My family and I had a 1 night stay.! The room is large and very clean. There is a fridge, microwave and kettle available in the room. Drinking water, room slippers and clean bath towels. The placement of the fixtures are all at the right position. Plenty of PowerPoints are available for charging.
- DiscardA (8/5): Good Solid Stay ( Better than our last stay in Jan 2019 ) - Room #1 1 x Night Booked via Agoda
A solid stay, swift and friendly check in.
Room #1 is downstairs and this was a much quieter room than right above us where we stayed last time ( previously you could here the 7/11 alarm all night from the PTT garage! )
The bed was really comfortable and the sheets soft = lovely.
Breakfast was basic but enough, fresh and the coffee was excellent.
Room are in an "Industrial Style" and it works ok.
We were driving and there is FREE parking Onsite.
We would stay here again if in town....
- r2thebizel (10/5): Above the Sea - Fabulous - Can’t really say enough good about here. The place has such a wonderful welcoming and homely vibe. Rustic and incredibly well done rooms which are spotless. Good breakfast and bistro choices, great staff, a little outdoor gym, pool and cats! Exactly what was needed for a short stop!
- stevewB2823CI (10/5): 5 star for service and caring for my needs. Clean, friendly and just a perfect stay. I will be back. - From the second I arrived the host was amazing 10/10. came and met me and help me with my bike. As I arrived in late, wet and muddy from riding all day. He rushed me to my room to freshen up. The accomodation was super clean, accomodating and food fresh and local. Host was a great person. So caring for me personally. Made sure I was totally cared for and my bike.
Beer super cold and they made me feel like I wasn’t solo.
Room has AC so peaceful. Best nights sleep.
- olliventura2 (10/5): Lovely boutique - The host and staff were very helpful, was really welcoming and enjoyed a conversation. Boutique very comfortable. The room spacious and the breakfast delicious. An excellent location and quiet. The swimming pool was inviting
- markjY8353TK (10/5): Great place and beautiful people!!! - We stayed here for one night doing the Hong Son Loop on Motorcycles.
It’s a great stop over on route and it’s very quirky. To get to your room you have to crossover a small bridge with koi Karp swimming below you.
I can’t thank the owner and a teacher that found my bag containing all my money, passport and credit cards that had dropped out of my backpack whilst leaving the hotel and end up on the road.
I only found out 2 hrs later, when we went to buy something on route. I had a missed call from the owner called Si that explained that the teacher had handed it in to the police. The police gave me his number and I couldn’t thank him enough for saving my bacon!!
I left him a 1000 baht, but he gave it to the police charity. What a man!!!
- Ngung Chia (10/5): Property with good character - Hotel has character. Lots of furnishing with recycled materials. Plenty of quotes. Big room, pool and free bicycle for going round town. Breakfast is delicious. Owner speak good English and very helpful.
- Gordon (6/5): - Ok for a stop over
- Alan James B (10/5): Excellent little place in Mae Sariang - I've stayed in Mae Sariang five times now, but this was the first time at Above the Sea. It's my favourite place by far. Very friendly service and staff, decent breakfast with different choices, lovely chill pool area and some nice touches in the room to ensure a comfortable stay. I'll be back.
- DiscardA (4/5): Over Priced... Lacking Quality. Staff Miserabe and Lazy - We were totally underwhelmed by the place.
There is not much choice of hotels in Maw Sariang so you have to take what is on offer....
And I guess this is why the place has not had any money spent of it.
Rooms have a Quirky / Industrial feel - but CHEAP.
Breakfast was OK for a start to the day.
We would Never book here again.
By comparison for just over 1,000 Baht you get far better hotels and room in PAI and Chiang Rai.
So very Noisy..... Loud Pub music... Then 7/11 Bing Bong all night, Dustbin men came at 1am, Party revellers crashing home at 3.30am and Motorbikes starting up in the Hotel at 05.30am....
All in all a VERY POOR Stay.
- 917MikeC (8/5): Great Place to Stay if you can book! - This is the 5th time we have stayed here on our journey around the Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son loop.
Initially I emailed our booking dates etc and despite 2 emails no reply ! Yes the email address is valid. I then sought to contact them via the link on their web page still no response!
Finally after another email we had a reply all good !
We fronted up only for the reception obviously not having our booking. Luckily I had printed the email confirming our booking ! I always do this beats trying to find it on phone or Tablet. The reception then spent time on the phone to the owner and eventually I got to speak to him. He said yes its ok we have a room etc! Clearly he had not acted on his reply email and we were given the large family room which was fine!
We know the owner quite well so I spoke to him calmly that evening and explained our difficulties with the booking process. He was apologetic and conceded that the web site link doesn't work ! I said get it fixed! I think there is a preference don't ask me why for travellers to make a booking via Agoda Booking dot com etc etc !
The staff are excellent the room and AC excellent along with the pool so we have no complaints and would highly recommend this place! Just make sure you have a confirmed booking. Its very popular with Bike touring groups and it is difficult to get into unless you book a long way out.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - View and cleanliness.Hospitality very good. Access to many.areas
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Schönes Hotel! Sauber, gepflegter kleiner Pool. Freundliche Mitarbeiter.
- Mochillero13 (8/5): Restaurant Nice Ambience and Decor - Attached to the Guesthouse is the Above the Sea Bistro. A bit upscale for Mae Sariang and slightly higher prices, well worth it for the spacious eating area and lovely, tasteful decor and some pleasant music. The shrimp rad na was quite superior to its cheaper competitors, generous serving and excellent gravy. I suppose it is traditional not to peel the shrimp, but it is messy digging them out of the hot broth and cleaning them. I did all six at once messing ip my fingers then licking them (tasty) and wiping with a napkin.
- paulfK6589RP (10/5): Great place to stay - Very nice stop on the way to or from Mae sot, Tak, Chiang Mai, Pai and Mae Hong son route. We have stayed her two times, and very happy with the room, the bike parking, service, beer, breakfet, and the Pool. We will come back.
Thanks to the staff and Khun C, for taking care of my forgotten lost phone, and send it to me same day found. Really appreciated that. Thank you very much.
- TuyenTR (10/5): Totally worth for a night spent - Such a little town at the beginning of Mae Hong Son loop, not much really around Mae Sariang to explore but a stop before heading up further. We rode in town in hot day, so appreciate the hotel has a swimming pool and AC room. They do have some friendly environment decor in the room, which is great. The host and staffs are really friendly and helpful. The boss can actually show you his motorcycle collections and hand you a ride. One of few great choices in Mae Sariang indeed.
- B7719GVgaryh (10/5): Good little Find - Recently made the hotel a base whilst exploring on dirt bikes around the area. Not many places around the area.
Pretty rustic hotel and great value for money. Staff were very good and friendly, plenty of room for trucks and bikes, plus they didn’t mind us using the hose to clean bikes and forecourt to do maintenance. Hope to visit again !!!
- adiebaker69 (4/5): Owner is great but this is nothing more than a hostel ! - Stayed here for two nights. There are not many options in Mae Sariang so this seemed the best of an average bunch. How wrong we were ! The owner and staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms however are appalling, claustrophobic, noisy (it backs on to the local garage forecourt) tired, and decorated like the tackiest youth hostel you have ever stayed in, no daily cleaning provided, poor value for money. The tiny pool is awful and overall the place is not particularly clean. Two other couples who arrived the same time as we did said exactly the same thing. The guy who owns it gets away with it because he is super likeable but he really needs a reality check and people need to write honest reviews.
- nightmanager1 (8/5): Quiet location and good value - We were torn between this place and the teak guesthouse/riverside hotel (they are both the same place). We were glad we did, the rooms are our the back which is shielded from the road, unlike the other guesthouse who's rooms faced the road so it may have been noisy. Our room was clean, quiet and spacious. The pool was also good but a little cold, which is to be expected given the climate in the mountains here. Bed was a little hard but overall quite comfy. Staff were average, no real effort from them but they were pleasant enough. Contrary to other reviews we revived a large breakfast; perhaps they've made them bigger recently. There's also parking at the front. We'd recommend staying here when doing the Mae Hong Son loop!
- KingpinNL (10/5): Super great guesthouse! - What can we say! Wonderfull place. Lovely staff who do whatever they can to make you feel at home. Especially the owner is a great guy who speaks very good English. We had a wonderfull time, nice pool, clean rooms with an industrial look and there are even bicycles you can use to explore the small town!
Best deal around Mae Sariang!
- siraPsirhC (6/5): 4 years old only... - This guesthouse is apparently only 4 years old. Due to poor construction and maintenance, the rooms start to look shabby: broken appliances, dubious bathroom cleanliness... 3 points due to good breakfast. Owner prefers to go cycling than to take care of his guests...
- 917MikeC (8/5): Always a great place! - On our annual MHS loop trip from Chiang Mai which included Chiang Rai we always book here.
It's very comfortable clean and welcoming. The owner is very helpful we had an issue with our car having driven on a new sealed road got some tar on the side panels. We were directed to a " car wash " and the locals did a complete detail it was fantastic !
We recommend this place !
- Jesse (8/5): Great stay but hard bed! - The hotel is very much what we expected from the pictures. It was nice and had industrial touches, but the bed was very hard!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The bed was a little hard, but the room was spacious and clean. We had a great stay here!
- Mark (6/5): Nice place to stay for travellers/backpackers - The hotel is behind the building what is used as pub and breakfast area.
Quiet place to stay with big room and large bathroom. No room for putting bags or clothes but i think the hotel is mostly used for a short stay.
Also no minibar but the room had a small fridge. Pitty the fridge was not working when i arrived so it took a while before it is cold again.
The swimming pool isn't as big as the pics make you believe but usefull for a nice dip after a day trip.
Breakfast was dissapointing because it gave me a feeling they are very stingy (that is why i gave you only 3 stars). Can choose from a list and the list is ok.
I not expected a buffet as in a 4 star hotel but if you want to serve a breakfast don't be so cheap and give only 1 slice bread cut in half. I usaly eat about 5 slices bread so i bought a bread in the 7-11, 33 bht for 20 slices. If you would charge 25 or 50bht/day more for your room nobody will notice that, you can give extra bread and make more profit.
The bed was kinda hard but not really uncomfortable. Didn't woke up with a sore back ;-).
- Verified traveler (6/5): Reasonable stay on the loop - Traveling the Mae Hong Son this was a fine place to stay. Bed was very hard but king size not double as indicated on site. Breakfast included. Good value.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Chambre d'hôte - Chambre et salle d'eau à rénover. Bruyant cause mécanisme piscine
- Verified traveler (10/5): Friendly and considerate owner - The owner was really considerate and helpful. We got there pretty late and exhausted. Realising that, he allowed the check-in/registration to be done tomorrow morning instead. Requests were met quickly. My only complaint would be the unlockable toilet door.Overall it was a pleasant stay.
- Andrew & Christine (10/5): All 5's for Above the Sea - Easy to find location with a few local restaurants to choose from, friendly and helpful staff, rooms were electic
- John (10/5): Nice hotel with friendly staff - This hotel is very clean and comfortable with excellent service. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. If you want a great hotel with friendly staff for a bargain price, this is the place to stay!
- Elliot (10/5): Convenient, lovely place, but hard bed - We got the family loft room, the most expensive one of all their rooms, mostly because I had a free Hotels.com reward night to use up. It was huge for the two of us, with a balcony going round two sides overlooking the garden and pool.
It's relaxing, and bicycles were available for free. We didn't take the breakfast, even though it was included, and we were reminded we could have just coffee if we wanted. The bed was really, really hard, which was fine for us, but maybe not for others.
The hotel is a short walk from town, or take one of their bikes.
- Gilberto (10/5): Cool rooms, great location - Great spot with funky decor. Great food and bar options within minutes. Definitely a must stay for the price, service and comfort.
