Guest Reviews
- adriansT1115WV (10/5): Great place - Stayed for the night for valentines was outstanding
Room and food fantastic
Everyone is very friendly and eager to help
Our waitress Ruby was just lovely a total star thank you so much
- C7265SQmannyr (6/5): Great food, development needed in staffing - I was asked to review this place and I’m in 2 minds. The food was wonderful, but the service wasn’t. The staff are friendly and want to be helpful but I’ll be realistic. We booked an early meal (6pm) and at 8.45 we were still sitting with congealed food in front of us wondering if we would ever get a dessert menu. To be honest, it ruined our plans for the night, and we never got a dessert.
However, the food we did get was amazing!
The breakfast in the morning was also amazing, but ruined by someone trying to clean the coffee machine with no apologies…. So no coffee to be had.
It felt to us that they have a brilliant chef and kitchen, but no support staff.
Maybe something to develop, it could have been 5 star
- 599suzannee (10/5): Fantastic Meal, definitely worth a visit - A Fantastic Dining Experience! From the moment we walked in, the service was exceptional. Ruby and Darcy made us feel so welcome and taken care of throughout our entire meal.
The food was nothing short of amazing. Huge thanks to Kai, the talented chef, for crafting such a memorable meal. We started with delicious starters, followed by mouthwatering mains, and ended with the perfect dessert. Every dish was bursting with flavor, and the presentation was top-notch.
We left completely satisfied and are already looking forward to our next visit. Highly recommend this spot – definitely worth a return trip!
- michaelhZ3332QS (10/5): A lovely staff for our wonderful wedding at Bawtry Hall - We stayed at the Crown for our wedding at Bawtry Hall. The staff were amazing and made our wedding perfect from start to finish - Libby, Caitlyn, Tasha, Phoebe, Miles, Liam L, Tyler, Jake G, Flynn, Liam B. Our wedding breakfast was delicious, thank you to Nathan and Louis! The bridal suite was lovely. The bathroom is amazing!
- stephp635 (10/5): Excellent - We hosted a business event here yesterday and the whole day was excellent. The food was devious, the staff incredible, and the venue is stunning. Highly recommend
- 298chloed (10/5): Wedding stay - We stayed here for our wedding at Bawtry Hall. It’s in a great location and the rooms are nice and comfortable. The food in the restaurant is delicious! The staff are all lovely and very helpful.
- BrynDHughes (10/5): Great Food and Service - We booked a table of 11 for Sunday lunch to celebrate two birthdays in the family. The food was delicious and the service was spot on. We had pre-ordered our meals, and one of the waitresses came out to re-confirm the choices before the food was brought out. Service was prompt, and always with a smile from the whole team: Athena, Hannah, Ruby, Ava and Darcy. Thanks for looking after us. We had a lovely few hours!
- Resort63089781751 (10/5): Great location excellent price. - Great location and the service was excellent and the breakfast was great. Highly recommended. My 4th visit here. Bawtry has lots of excellent bars also.
- W4784AQpeter (10/5): Excellent place to eat or stay. - Staying here for a couple of nights for a family wedding, ate at the restaurant on site called the robata grill , we were fitted in to a already very busy service , we were greeted and served by a very nice and polite young lady, her name is Ava and she is a fabulous waitress, she constantly checked on us and ensured the experience was very pleasant. Thank you very much .
- joysL2595JO (10/5): The Crown Hotel Bawtry Festive Menu meal - We have just had a very enjoyable festive meal at the Crown Hotel in Bawtry.
The decorations helped to create a Christmas atmosphere. We were served by a very capable trio of waitresses, Ebony, Sophie and Ruby. On entry we were asked which kind of seating we preferred and were shown to our tables which were already set up.
We were asked if we would like a jug of water on the table which was quickly provided. The menus available were explained to us and we chose the Festive menu which provided good value. Ebony explained that we could have our desserts boxed up if needed as I had said I wasn’t sure if I would be able to eat it . I was impressed by this .
We were then asked whether we would like any drinks and these were also brought quickly. We were given two crackers to pull whilst waiting for our food. I thought this was a good idea as there were question cards inside to chat about.
We did not have to wait long for our food and when it came it was nicely presented. We were also asked if we needed any extra sauces.
It tasted delicious. The waitresses asked us if everything was okay during each course.
Our plates were cleared away promptly.
We had such a lovely dining experience that we are already thinking of coming back with friends and family.
Thanks to all the capable staff we were very impressed with everything .
- mrs_denman1705 (4/5): Not clean, very dated rooms. - Really disappointed, given this is a 4* hotel and we paid £130 for the night (weeknight) with breakfast, it was not good. We were on the ground floor. Room 117. The Room was filthy. Dried urine under the toilet seat, black mould all in the shower and the bathroom door is just a shower screen which doesn’t fit the door so doesn’t close.
Very grubby feeling, thin flat pillows were very uncomfortable. The towels had black marks on them too. The hotel itself is quite nice, and staff are friendly.
Think the hotel rooms need massively updating but in the interim, they need to clean them properly. Given how up and coming Bawtry is, I think they need to up their game or consider lowering the price significantly to reduce complaints and manage expectations.
- Bonbon48 (10/5): Five * plus - Visited the Crown Hotel for lunch today with 11 friends. The food was first class, served in a timely manner by attentive staff. The restaurant was comfortable with beautiful decor giving a relaxing vibe.
Well worth a visit if you are in the Bawtry area.
- wgardner101 (10/5): Overnight Business Stay - Stayed for 1 x night due to working in the local area.
Lovely location within the town and easy to find, parking was a bit tight but no issues.
I didn’t eat in the hotel due to budget (work trip) but there are plenty of other places to eat that are easily walkable and a convenience store over the road too.
- darrenaI9592JK (4/5): Disappointed - Booked on Autumn B&B and bubbles deal. On the whole the public areas of the hotel are good. Reception is a little dark and shabby.
Rooms are very disappointing. Decor is dated, dark wood fitted furniture, poor quality linen. Only one double socket in whole room, had to unplug kettle and tv to charge phones use hair dryer, no sockets near bedside! Just one pack of biscuits supplied and no bottled water. Pillows were lumpy (assume had been wet and dried) hard and flat. Towels were dumped in bottom of wardrobe. Room was very hot, even in November - turned radiator off on arrival, did not turn back on. Ground floor room so unhappy about opening window overnight.
The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Felt very grubby after using shower, get in, get out quickly. Bathrooms are small, shower over bath. Shower screen was filthy with black mould at the bottom, mouldy silicone around bath, base of bath grubby. Water puddling on floor from somewhere. Toilet roll holder hanging off, fan not working. The bathroom doors are basically a glass shower door, with a gap at bottom and top, and the door just flaps about, does not shut. Basically no privacy in the bathroom. The bathroom door was also filthy, bathrooms get steamy you need to wipe the glass door. The laminate surface around the sink was grubby and chipped. The bathroom on the whole felt grubby and dated.
I mentioned the state of bathroom and pillows on checkout, the receptionist barely lifted an eyebrow - obviously used to complaints.
One postive the breakfast was pretty good. We live locally and assumed expected better for the Crown. Thankfully we had not travelled far to stay here or paid full price! Would return to eat but not to stay over. Serious investment and refurbishment is needed in the property. Stay away.
- Jak90210 (10/5): Excellent - We stay here very regular and just love all the staff and the facilities, we dine here for our lunch dinner and breakfast and the food is just lovely especially with the new head chef, tonight we were served by Ruby and Maddie in the restaurant …. How fabulous these 2 girls were just made our experience even better …. I now want to meet Steve the French bulldog brilliant staff and service. Thank you.
- Johnnyboy79 (10/5): Sunday Lunch - Great Sunday lunch at the crown. The food was lovely prepared by Holly, Kai and Nathan with fantastic service from Ruby, Maddie, Isabella, Ava & Darcy. It was very good value from start to finish. If you are in Bawtry give it try I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
- X4055ORricharda (10/5): Sunday Lunch - fantastic classic Sunday roast with all the trimmings. We all had the turkey which was exceptional. Very cozy and relaxing afternoon. Many thanks to servers Ruby, Isabella, Maddie, Ava, Darcy and the amazing chefs. Well done.
- paularA4139ZC (10/5): Super place to visit to eat, stay over or get married at. - Thank you to the whole team at The Crown Hotel at Bawtry - our stay and wedding day in August 2025 was everything we dreamed of and more!! 🥰
This venue is truly special, the food is the yummiest and all the staff and the service they provide is just the best - nothing was too much trouble for us or all our friends and family who stayed over in the hotel for our event and the attention to detail from every staff member day and night was incredible. We stayed in the Bridal Suite and our guests stayed in a variety of suites and rooms and we were all very happy.
If you’re getting married take a look here before you book anything - the events team staff Tori, Emily & Hannah who helped us plan everything beforehand and Tony who was there on the day making sure everything went well and the chefs and kitchen staff are all magical too.
Bawtry is a lovely place to visit but your trip will be better if you eat/stay at The Crown whilst you’re there too!
Thank you all so much 💜
- DougJ459 (8/5): I offered a tip on my card but it was declined (by staff) - We had lovely lunchtime wine and food and service in a cosy restaurant setting.
We came to pay the bill and I asked waitress Karen to add £5 as a tip as I was paying by card. She said there was no point as it went to the management. I had no cash so she missed out.
I was confused as the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 came into effect in 2024. All tip must go to the workers in full and distributed fairly and employers must keep a record and have written tipping policy available to staff. Karen implied that this was not happening. I hope she was mistaken as I do not want to use a hotel that fails to comply with the law.
- elizamaya2025 (10/5): Yorkshire puddings are a must - Excellent customer service and food, the portions are spot on and ive never had a better yorkshire pudding.
Thanks to Zoe, Ruby, Annabel, Isabella, Darcy and the Chef for a wonderful pork roast.
- T6879RWlouiset (10/5): Great last minute treat ! - Went for a birthday treat with my son. Gorgeous food, lovely setting and Ruby and Isabella who attended our table were professional and attentive. Will definitely be back. Sea bass was delicious and the chocolate brownie was to die for !
- junehB5349ZT (10/5): Wedding at crown hotel bawtry - Me and my partner got married on the 25th September we had an intimate wedding, reception staff, and bar staff, and Tony masters of ceremonies could not do enough for us they made our wedding day very special, Tony made sure our day ran smoothly, all the bar staff was polite and friendly and worked really hard throughout the day making sure our guests where happy, the bridal room was really nice and clean up, we stayed for 2 nights and had a meal the night before, the food was delicious, all our guests said that they enjoyed the day and the food was amazing. I would recommend to have a wedding at this hotel the staff are lovely. Thank you crown hotel for my lovely wedding day June and dale west.
- Wanderer691991 (10/5): Intimate Wedding Package - We booked the intimate wedding package at the crown and had the most amazing day. The Wedding planning team are fantastic, we unfortunately had to move our wedding back a year and they were so compassionate and understanding nothing was too much trouble and they took care of everything for us. Hannah and Tori were fantastic. Tony and his team on the wedding day were brilliant they made sure everything was perfect. Tony was very reassuring and made sure everything about our day ran smoothly. A huge thank you to everyone at the Crown 🥂🥳
- rebeccasY7967UU (10/5): Amazing wedding day!! - We had our wedding ceremony & reception here in August could not recommend this venue enough. The venue is stunning, the food was amazing and the staff were all excellent, and looked after everyone to the very highest of standards. We would definitely recommend this venue to anyone looking to plan their wedding day 10/10
- G9566SRemmab (10/5): Our wedding 🩷 - We had our wedding at the crown on 4th July 2025, everything was perfect from start to finish, the Events team and the staff couldn’t do enough for us and they made our day perfect!
Thank you so much to everyone at the Crown for making our day so special 🩷
- 68bekkig (10/5): Restaurant, over night stays & OUR WEDDING ❤️ - Myself and my partner (now husband) have stayed at the crown on a few occasions now, have eaten in the restaurant and also had our wedding here in August. I would definitely recommend The Crown hotel. They have always gone above and beyond when we have been. The staff are always smiling and have always welcoming! The food is outstanding the beef wellington is well… WOW!
As for our wedding, what a day! The staff were amazing from start to finish and the day could not have gone any better!
Thank you Crown Hotel For your amazing hospitality and genuine love for what you do.
Bekki & Andrew
- DayTrip761495 (10/5): Wedding Day ! - We held our wedding at the hotel and cannot thank the team enough. From the events team to the team on the day it was perfect. The staff were absolutely fantastic and organised everything for us, the food was delicious and the DJ kept everyone on the dance floor all night. The bridal suite is beautiful and spotlessly clean, will recommend to everyone that will listen. Thanks again Team Crown you were wonderful ! Mr & Mrs Tracey
- 280clarek (8/5): wedding day delight had by all - We had our wedding at the crown hotel because of the location and everything all in one place .
I must say firstly that all the staff were amazing and so helpful throughout the day and night .
Everything was taken care of from start to finish with very little fuss to us .
The food was absolutely beautiful with a three course meal and pie and peas for the evening. All the guests commented how they all enjoyed the food and the quality of the produce .
The room was set out exactly how we had asked and staff worked with my flower lady to ensure everything was put into the correct place .
Now a few things that was not up to the mark , our adjoining rooms the night before with my daughters was less than average , we looked onto a waste land with broken fencing and chairs that had been dumped and with windows that had blown. .
My daughters shower -bath would not empty, so they had to use mine , we reported this but it wasn't rectified while we stayed in the room .
My florist informed me that some of the ceremony chairs were marked and needed changing , she took this upon her self to sort .
The saddest part of the experience or us and our guests was the resident DJ .
we asked at reception if he could change the music as he was playing rock music and nobody was dancing due to the acquired taste .
Then he started playing rave music which took everyone by surprise to the point that I had to go up to him and explain this music wasn't appropriate for a wedding.
He just seemed to want to play what he liked and not what people wanted to dance to.
I have been honest with my feedback , but again the latter did not ruin my experience and the staff , food and deco was worth booking a wedding there .
There are plenty of positives just some minor adjustments would make such a difference and sort the DJ please .
- C6184KZamyh (10/5): Wedding - From start to finish the staff went above and beyond! They were so helpful, they really did the best to make sure we not only had the best stay possible but the most relaxed wedding day! A massive thank you to the housekeeping manager, Dj Paul, Tony and his team, tori, Emily, Jimmy and Lee I believe! Also thank you to the bar staff and restaurant staff that accommodated to a diary allergy meal! The food was stunning! We couldn’t have had a more relaxed day and more nicer people to be apart of our special day! All full of laughs and friendly. We would highly recommend getting married here! I’m sure you’d be greatly looked after by staff just as we were!

- T8944UYemmaf (10/5): Wedding Review - Just had our wedding at the crown in August & we must say the venue is stunning! Food was unreal! All the staff are lovely & we could thank the wedding team enough for everything from the day we booked the wedding to the big day!
- glitterbabe123 (4/5): Sounds quality but very grey… rooms shabby Broken bits no care 2 star for place 5 for staff - Nice welcome free drink for waiting nice touch but the view was of a walled bear wasteland, beautifully present bar etc but rooms very grey corridors grey no attention to detail 2 -3 star at best fur coat no knickers establishment don’t expect much iv stayed in better for a lot less money
- gainsbunny (2/5): Find a travelodge - Very poor , living on its past, old coaching in on the great north road, last night spent in the George, Stamford, classic coaching Inn. This place is ore like Abigales Party.
Pay £7 for parking, no water in room. Very sad building, a hook in the bathroom would be ice, a socket near the bed too. Terrible
- steve13571 (10/5): Excellent service as usual. - I often use the restaurant in the Crown for my business meetings.
I am always met with a smile and most of all given space to talk to my clients.
Karen is an absolute gem and always makes my visit a pleasure. Her professional approach to serving and helping clients is excellent and makes it easy to recommend the Crown for both food and service.
- soph2462 (10/5): The staff go above and beyond - We stayed at the Crown on our wedding night after getting married at the beautiful Bawtry Hall. Our suite was lovely with one of the biggest bathrooms I have ever seen. The entire Crown/Bawtry Hall staff are truly wonderful and go out of there way for you. Each one of out guests who stayed at the crown all said how much they enjoyed their stay and their breakfasts.
- carlscatt31 (10/5): From our very first meeting with Tori, we knew we had chosen the perfect venue for our intimate wedding day. - Our Perfect Wedding Day 14th Sept 2025
From our very first meeting with Tori, we knew we had chosen the perfect venue for our intimate wedding day. Tori, Hannah & Emily from the events team made sure that everything was covered, with no stone left unturned, to ensure our day would be exactly what we wanted. On the day of our wedding, it was over to Tony and his team, Hannah, Scarlett & Flynn to look after our wedding party, and what a great job they did. Tony had met with my now-wife, Jayne, before the day to discuss the day's events. Tony listened to our requests and his team implemented them into the order of the day, making our wedding day the day of our dreams. A family friend had written a poem, which Tony read perfectly. Thank you for that.
To the registrars, All Occasions, Danielle's Sweet Treats, Andrea (Flowers), Louise Machin Photography, you were all fantastic.
We cannot express our gratitude enough to the whole team for your expertise and professionalism in making our wedding day perfect.

- 929helenw (10/5): Intimate wedding - We booked the Crown for our daughter’s small intimate wedding. From the initial enquiry to the day everything went smoothly and our questions were answered. Our daughter and partner wanted a small, no fuss day after having their daughter in April. We booked the Ledger Suite to celebrate. The room was a perfect size for our 25 guests and All Occasions decorated the room beautifully in our chosen theme to hold our afternoon tea. The selection of sandwiches, wraps and quiche went down a treat. Desserts including jam and cream scones, chocolate brownie and lemon drizzle loaf proved a hit. Eleanor who looked after us on the day was so attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. She is a huge credit to the team. Thank you to Tori who answered our many questions on the run up.
- jdmcev0y (10/5): Wonderful Family Sunday Lunch - We had a wonderful family Sunday lunch; for 19 people. The food was delicious and the setting was lovely. The service was excellent from a team of girls, they were all very friendly and ensured we were having a wonderful time. They were Athena, Maddie, Darcy, Ava, Zoe and Ruby. Apologies if I missed any names. You were all excellent,
- I949MHterim (8/5): Great Team - We had a big family lunch at
The restaurant - we were tended to by Ruby, Zoe,Ava,Darcy, maddie and Athena. They were cool, calm and consistent. Well done girls, we had a delicious meal and great service.
- gemini-joy (10/5): Lovely breakfast experience - I visited yesterday for breakfast to celebrate a friends wedding. We were made to feel so welcome and staff put themselves out for us. The decor is beautiful and breakfast cooked to perfection. A throughly lovely experience and I fully recommend The Crown for breakfast.
- SSVernon80 (10/5): Our Perfect Wedding - We chose to have our wedding at The Crown, Bawtry and we truly had the most perfect wedding. We received all the information we needed from day 1 of planning and as the date drew closer the events team ensured everything was covered. The wedding was just as we wanted, Tony (Master of Ceremonies) was calm and reassured us every step of the way and staff on the day were fantastic, special mention to Scarlett, Sophia and Ebony. It was truly a magical day. Thank you!
- Judi (4/5): - 1st night Ground floor opposite kitchens. Extractor fans very noisy, although we were assured that they were stopped at 9.00. However we were not advised that they restarted at 6.30am. Bed quilt smelled of cooked food presumably from the kitchen.
Room was generally tired and the bathroom was far too small and in need of refurbishment. No space to put anything except for one unsecured shelf behind the toilet.
Sitting properly on the toilet was impossible and one had to sit at an angle. After complaining, we were relocated to room 19, a better room but unfortunately a lot of road noise - no apology or assistance provided by staff to move. The toilet in Room 19 was abnormally low making it difficult to sit and get up from without a struggle. The seat didn’t match the size of the toilet. The rainshower was a joke as the water jets sprayed at every conceivable angle instead of straight down and no separate hand shower provided. The pillows were lumpy and uncomfortable and on returning in the evening, the quilt was askew and the pillows just thrown loosely into position. No care or attention had been paid to refresh the room. On our last night we stayed in Leonardo’s hotel at EM airport which was considerably cheaper but was was far better, quality of furnishings, cleanliness, bedding were first class. At the Crown parking facilities down to the customer to sort out and an unnecessary problem. Surely you can improve the system for hotel guests with a parking permit.
- Dave4842 (10/5): Wedding anniversary overnight stay - My wife booked for us to stay overnight at the crown hotel and an have ananniversary meal.
Check-in was seamless and we headed up to our room which was a suite. On entering the room there was a wow factor with design and the unusual low bed on a wooden base, I liked it. The bathroom looked amazing. All the usual facilities but with an extra bowl of goodies from Yorkshire companies which was nice. The room was clean and welcoming.
We pre booked the restaurant and headed down for our anniversary meal. The two staff members Ruby and Isabella were fantastic throughout our meal, making the occasion memorable. The food was on point, My wife had the beef medallions and I had the Belly pork. The food was perfectly portioned and flavoured, well done to the kitchen staff.
We returned to the room which was quite warm so I used the tower fan supplied by the hotel. It kept the room at a lovely temperature and we enjoyed a good night’s sleep.
- J1075LYvickis (10/5): Sunday Lunch - We visited the Crown Hotel for Sunday lunch yesterday and what a gorgeous venue, a charming and stylish atmosphere which was enhanced by the exceptional service we received.
We were first greeted by Zoe who gave us a warming welcome and directed us to the restaurant. This was followed by service from Ebony, Ava, Isabella, Darcy and Jamie who were all very professional. They couldn’t do enough for us, being polite, attentive and friendly.
The food was delicious, a big heads up to the chef, the meat was cooked to perfection, yum.
Thank you Crown Hotel for providing a joyous and positive experience.
The best part for me was the service, a smile from everyone I encountered 😊 we will definitely be back.
- adeles821 (6/5): Disappointing night stay. - My and my partner came to the crown hotel as we was celebrating are 11 years anniversary just to stop one night. I wanted it to be special but didnt turn out that way I paid £195 to stop in the exclusive room 509 it was very disappointing a Premier inn is more cleaner than this. You could tell no one has been in that room for sometime the only thing that was clean was the bedding and towels. The first impression when coming in to the room was wow but then you start to realise things the wooden floor around the bed and on the sides was dusty as hell! You could see where we have been and walking around. The windows covered in bird poop and left wide open. The lamp shades was disgusting they are shameful they both had what looked like red water marks like alcohol or pop had been thrown on them. Air vents that did jack all, also they supplied the room with a small heater and a big fan if you want to be hot or cold. In the middle of the night the room was roasting we put the fan on but that didnt stay on for long! It sounded like a bloody washing machine going off. So that made are night unbearable. At first we didnt think the bath was working as we turned the taps on the water wasn't coming out then it clicked this room hasn't been used for sometime so the water was taking its time coming out but then it sorted it self out. I would of thought this hotel would of had more pride on how clean there rooms are specially for the amount of money they are charging. Would I recommend people to stop there NOT AT ALL!
- clarecS7324YM (10/5): Sunday Lunch at the Crown restaurant - We had a lovely Sunday lunch today . Walked straight in no queue which was brilliant. Ordered the prawn cocktail and smoked salmon starter followed by a roast pork and roast turkey dinner . We never made the dessert selection as we were full from these 2 courses . Ambience was lovely and the girls serving Ava, Ebony, Darcy and Ruby were very efficient interacting and checking we were ok for everything . They never stopped working and were very friendly and smiley
- D841IBlisam (6/5): Weekend stay for races - Lovely hotel but to be honest expected more was so excited to stay the restaurant was amazing décor beautiful in design great service from Ava and Hannah on the night we stayed but it’s the rooms bed too low for us room furniture has seen better days and dated the sofas needs replacing room was very warm but tower fan was provided too far for races for us . The reason for 3 stars for the price that you pay for me didn’t match up to the quality of the rooms we wouldn’t book again but everyone has there own opinions but the restaurant is definitely worth a visit
- Sianyb1988 (10/5): Enjoyable birthday surprise - I booked The Crown for my boyfriends birthday. We had an overnight stay with breakfast, and I booked the restaurant for dinner. Everything was a surprise, so I called a couple of days before to let them know and ask them not to mention any pricing during check-in, to which they were very accommodating. After a little frustration with the parking, we checked in. I booked an executive room for a little bit of luxury. It was quite a warm day and as they don't have aircon, a fan was provided. Unfortunately it was fairly rubbish because the cable was short and it wasn't very powerful, but we could live with it. If it was any warmer though, it would have been a problem. The water pressure in the shower wasn't great and the temperature was temperamental, I wasn't sure I'd be able to get all the shampoo out of my thick head of hair, but it was fine in the end. Overall the room was tired and definitely in need of a refresh. These are minor things but for the price you pay, I'd expect it to be a bit better and I also think there should be a small fridge in the room.
In spite of all that, we did really enjoy our stay. We went down to the bar to get a drink after we'd checked in and we were able to get a table outside which was lovely.
I had booked dinner for 6ppl, as a surprise my boyfriends family were joining us. I wanted to check where our table was and to let the staff know that 4ppl would be arriving before us as it was a surprise for his birthday. The hotel manager Craig overheard and couldn't have been more hospitable. He let me choose the table, and of course I chose one under the tree which looked beautiful. One of the waitresses, I believe it was Phoebe (sorry if I've got that wrong), also offered to hang a happy birthday banner, though I politely declined as that is really not his thing. She did however put some birthday confetti on the table and Craig was very kind to give us a bottle of champagne on the house. The food, drinks and service were all brilliant. I can't fault the staff at all, they really made our stay and his birthday special. Thank you to everyone, we would come back again.
p.s. It's worth noting that the hotel have their own car park which is payable at £7 for 24hrs, but it is small. If you have to park out the front, it is a council car park and there are restrictions on the length of stay, which could mean that you have to get up at 8am to pay to park for longer.
- 626carenh (10/5): Great place, fabulous food & service . . Happy customers - Lovely evening out for a baby shower, great food & service . . I'd recommend the skewers but everyone's food looked fabulous.
Thanks to Ruby & the team for looking after us 😊
- katerQ8783HR (10/5): Lunch with friends - Fabulous lunch again with friends. Sat in restaurant at back wall. Served by Ruby and later looked after by Karen. Highly recommend 👌
- debbiejM8510UX (10/5): Lovely restaurant and excellent service - What a delight, First time visiting the restaurant for Sunday lunch and wasn’t disappointed.
Welcoming, beautiful venue, the food was gorgeous and we had excellent service by Ebony, Ava and Ruby, will definitely be back.
- Zarabratton (10/5): Lovely breakfast - We had a lovely breakfast, both had the full Yorkshire and really enjoyed it. Plenty of food and really good quality. All the staff were lovely and our waitress Ebony was so polite and helpful.
- MarieS74 (10/5): Lovely stay - We won this stay at a charity auction and it was brilliant. The Executive room was lovely
and there was a chilled bottle of Prosecco waiting for us! Staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was top notch, we will definitely book again.
- E6928CK (10/5): Wonderful food & great service - Wonderful food, the beef medallions were delicious and my partner had the fire cracker chicken which was delicious too.
Fantastic service by Hannah and Darcy!
- D3429TPpeteb (10/5): Battery Hall Wedding – A Photographer’s Perspective on the Wedding day of Millie & David. - It's not often a vendor write's about another vendor, and if you're a Bride & Groom looking for a Wedding venue please read below.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of working at many venues, but the team at Battery Hall truly stood out to me. From the moment I arrived, the wedding coordinator and staff made me feel incredibly welcome and supported. They went above and beyond in ensuring that I had everything I needed to capture the special moments of the day.
The staff’s attention to detail and willingness to assist was exceptional. In particular, Libby the Wedding Venue manager was always on hand to adjust the lighting, helping with access to key areas, or offer suggestions to enhance the overall aesthetic of the wedding photos. It’s clear that they genuinely care about both the Bride & Groom/ Guests and the vendors involved, which fosters a collaborative and seamless experience, with the main focus being on doing our best for the Wedding party.
Of particular note for service; Libby, Billy, Liam Jake G, Caitlyn and Tasha - absolutly brilliant.
Never one to expect a meal however, when provided always grateful, the Chef's Wendy & Holly presented a stunning meal and the portion sizes were more than I would have expected - Top Job. I heard the guest's discussing the food and the feedback was more than positive!
Battery Hall is a fantastic venue, made even better by a team that is not only professional but genuinely caring. I would highly recommend the venue for Weddings and guests or working here as a photographer.
Moreover, if you're looking at adding a Master of Ceremonies ask Libby for the details of Micheal, this gentlemen was awesome !.
- michellerV3523EV (8/5): Excellent choice - Excellent service from a wonderful gentleman called Tony..
Many words describe him,,
Professional , Smart,
Going the extra mile.
Attention to detail ,,
Polite.
Courteous .
Handsome 😊.
Only a tiny flaw,
The young ladies, who are lovely,
didn’t stay at the welcome drinks table,
Some of our guest went back for a second drink, which then left our late arrivals without a welcome drink, so we had to purchase more from the main bar..
Maybe if it had been overseen until we went into the function suite , then the staff could of told guest it’s a welcome drink only,
- AberstonAdventures (8/5): Almost perfect, but... - It's an attractive building bang in the middle of town. A warm welcome at check-in and we got a lovely big room, larger than expected. The only downside: endured a cold shower with very low water pressure. Reported it to Reception via their whatsapp link, who said they'd look into it. The water in the sink was fine but I can't wash my body in that!
Come the morning, endured another cold shower. Reported it on whatsapp again, but it was time to check out anyway . Told Reception in person, who were apologetic.
At least we left with a smile on our faces: my wife and I had a lovely breakfast in the restaurant. Thanks to Isabella, Ebony, Kim, Jessica and Phoebe for looking after us and for Marniche(?!) for preparing it so well and promptly. We'll be back - just please sort the shower out!
- mariarS6236TN (10/5): - Fantastic service at the Crown tonight ! Booth catch up - amazing food dishes and Elliot the barman was superb - perfect balance of hospitality and friendliness !
The booth experience for food and drinks is an undiscovered gem … why not expand to a quality bottomless brunch ! !
- tonymQ6914PW (8/5): Pleasant stay - Staff very welcoming and helpful. Athena was really pleasant and attentive at dinner. Good recommendation for lunch. Room comfortable. Parking a bit tricky, if you park near the hotel, you have to reverse out. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
- Carl (6/5): - Lumpy pillows , no aircon , unclean bathroom ,not a 4star hotel
- scottwK5941EZ (10/5): Stay and Crown Hotel Bawtry - Lovely stay. Reception staff were helpful and very accomodating. Rooms clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good and service was excellent. Ava, Aymee and Ebony were lovely and very welcoming. Highly recommend.
- etuff (10/5): Lovely restaurant ambience and food - Darcy greeted us at the front of the restaurant and then Ruby and Isabella looked after us during our meal. Great service by the two lovely ladies and fabulous food prepared by Marius and Manish. We loved the menu choices. All the food we choose was of great quality, beautifully presented and good value for money. We cannot recommend The Crown enough and praise the team. Thank you.
- H5024FGkatep (10/5): Best day ever! - Bawtry Hall was the absolute dream venue for our wedding. From the first time we visited on a showcase day, we just knew it was the one. Gorgeous setting, amazing team, and the kind of atmosphere that instantly felt right.
After we booked, we were invited to a taster evening at The Crown, which was such a lovely touch. We got to try all the food and pick exactly what we wanted for the big day. It felt super personal and made us even more excited.
The night before the wedding, we had a rehearsal dinner with our immediate family and wedding party in a private suite. The events team helped us plan it all, and it was the perfect way to kick things off - intimate, relaxed, and such a special evening.
On the day, everything ran like clockwork thanks to our amazing coordinator Libby. She was calm, organised, and totally on it from start to finish. She even acted as a behind-the-scenes content creator, capturing little moments on her phone throughout the day and sending them to us after. It was such a thoughtful touch and meant we had snippets to look back on straight away.
And a huge shoutout to Emily from the events team. She was an absolute star throughout the planning. I sent her endless emails (sorry, Emily!) and nothing was ever too much trouble. She was always quick to reply, super helpful, and genuinely lovely to deal with. Her support made the whole process feel easy and stress-free.
The staff on the day; Billy, Elliot W, Isla, Lily, Lucy J, Miles, and Flynn were brilliant. Friendly, professional, and kept everything running smoothly from start to finish.
The venue itself is stunning - elegant but welcoming, and full of character. It felt grand without being over the top, and our guests were blown away by how beautiful everything looked.
Huge thanks to the whole team at Bawtry Hall for making our wedding so unforgettable. We loved every minute.
Love from, Kate & Josh xx
aka. Mr & Mrs Goodison
- tosh1232014 (10/5): Wonderful Wedding at The Crown - I attended a family wedding at The Crown on 28th June (Giselle & Rikki 💞) It was PERFECT!!!
The staff involved, the decor, food & drinks were all wonderful.
What a perfect venue for a celebration 🎉
- amandahP7726OL (10/5): Top night out - We loved the staff and food on our visit . The food was well priced for the area . Ruby and D'Arcy was very welcoming and went above and beyond to provide a excellent service. Nathan and Gemma in the kitchen also provided an excellent service. We will definitely return .
- E2788DHbriang (10/5): Ruby made it! - Excellent service and very friendly. Ruby is great and a credit to the company. She was very helpful and kind.I’m old and she treated me with respect and kindness.
- amandafY2420RH (10/5): Bawtry Hall Wedding - Where to even start … we got married at Bawtry Hall on the 07.06.2025 and it was amazing from start to finish. All the support in the lead up from Emily was perfect she was always on hand to answer my million questions . We were then passed across to Libby to look after us on the day , and she did a fantastic job from the minute we arrived till the minute we left . Everything ran on time and so smoothly . Libby was there all through the day with everything we needed . Our guests were all looked after and had the best day.
Special mention to Billy, Miles, Ruby Bass, Oliver, Rose, Caitlyn who looked after us all with amazing smiles.
We cannot recommend Bawtry hall enough.
Thank you for giving us the day we dreamed of.
- kerrybU9756LJ (10/5): The perfect wedding! - We had our wedding on 20th June at the Crown. Honestly was amazing from start to finish. From the catering staff right through to the wedding planners on the day-both Hannah's! It truly was the most beautiful day and everything just ran perfectly! Cannot thank the team or recommend enough!
- traceymC7165GW (10/5): Wedding Day and Stay 5th to 6th June 2025 - We had our wedding day here on Friday 6th June 2025 and we had the most fantastic day the hotel and staff were perfect everything we needed the staff were fantastic, the food was incredible for the wedding breakfast and for both morning breakfasts on both days. Highly recommend this venue and staff
- A1953PZkelliem (10/5): Wedding day - We had our wedding here in June and it was absolutely amazing. The staff were incredible, we didn’t need to ask for anything, everything was taken care off. Nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were lovely and spacious. Food was incredible. The whole day and night was run with no problems at all. The only thing I can think of is having some air con in all the rooms, the bridal suite was so nice and cool but the others were quite hot. We did ask for fans and they did bring us some to the rooms. We would definitely recommend and we will definitely return.
- Y6212DWmichaelw (10/5): Great meal at the Crown Hotel, Bawtry - Four of us went for a meal on the evening of Saturday, 28th June. There is a good variety of food on the menu. We started with the nibbles (Breads, Dips and Oil + Cheesy Garlic Bread) and both were very nice. Then we shared a couple of starters of Crispy Chilli Chicken, which we all thought was amazing and Tempura Prawns which again were amazing and super succulent. For the mains we had Skewers (Cajun chicken + King prawn pil pil + Garlic king prawn) Fish Finger Sandwich Wild Mushroom Gnocchi + chicken breast and Firecracker Chicken. We all thoroughly enjoyed our mains and they were all cooked perfectly. Our waitress for the evening was Ruby and she was very attentive but not in your face, the right balance of being available when we needed her. Professional and polite, the perfect mix, well done Ruby! We all agreed we would recommend and return without question.
- ARF69 (8/5): Nice hotel in quiet little town - Stayed here for a business trip. The hotel is a nice venue but unfortunately there is no air conditioning which made sleeping on nightshift a bit of a night mare. What made the trip was the staff. The girls on reaction and the kitchen were lovely and helpful always smiling. Lee Jimmy and Elliot on the bar in nights made the trip we wouldn’t have stayed other wise. Great guys good laugh.
- U6705VZcaroll (8/5): Good experience - The hotel is very nice and executive room was big and comfortable but a little dated; good night’s sleep though. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming.
The Sunday lunch three course meal was exceptional, plentiful and tasty. Well done to Nathan for the fabulous food and to Ruby and Phoebe for their excellent, friendly service.
This was a raffle prize from Doncaster Rovers FC and much appreciated.
- Louisa (10/5): - Lovely hotel and nicely decorated.
Only thing lacking was a fan as it was so hot and windows were open to full capacity.
- Q4307RFdaveb (8/5): Great Service - Went to the Crown Hotel to celbrate a Birthday with my wife, food was excellent and service from Darcy & Ruby was exceptional.
- Andy2479 (10/5): Thank you from my Mum - A fantastic experience, the food service and atmosphere were at a high level, our waitress Ruby was helpful and courteous at all times.
I especially enjoyed my dessert as the chef wrote Happy Birthday with a toffee sauce…. Yum
I will be returning shortly.
- lisatF3823WZ (10/5): Our amazing wedding! - We got married here on 23.5.25. The staff have been amazing throughout the whole process.
I stayed the night before with the bridesmaids. Hannah was on hand to answer any questions and to make sure we had everything we needed and took care of the wedding flowers, cake etc which we arrived with.
On the wedding day, the other Hannah was an absolute joy to have around, checking in regularly while the bridal party were getting ready. Hannah even took lots of photographs and made a little video of our day.
Our day was absolutely perfect and everyone has commented on the quality of the food, it was excellent.
We would just like to thank all of the staff at the Crown Hotel for making our special day even more memorable, Mr & Mrs Tompkin.
- 168aidenr (10/5): Fantastic wedding - Where do we start? The Crown Hotel made our wedding day so special. From booking the venue to the day after our wedding, the team made everything so easy and accommodating; nothing was too much for them. Every time we came to the hotel, whether to ask a couple of questions or discuss the final details for our wedding, they went above and beyond.
The wedding day itself was faultless. Literally everything went as perfectly as it could. Again, nothing was too much for them. We had a couple of amendments during the day, which the team handled straight away. I know it was our wedding day, but they made it feel extra special. I cannot thank the team enough. The organisation was seamless. The decorations and setup were perfect, and the venue looked amazing.
The food on the day was fantastic! Everyone has commented, saying the food was lovely. The canapés went down a treat! The wedding breakfast was stunning, and the evening food was great. The service from the bar staff, waiters, waitresses, and the operations manager were second to none.
I just want to thank the team at the Crown Hotel for making our day so much better than we could have ever expected. Truly one of the best days of my life.
- haydeno562 (10/5): A wedding to remember! - What a place!
Me and my "Now wife" got married here in the 24/04/25 and it was a day we will never forget.
The hotel accompanied by the events team made the whole day hassle free from day one taking all the pressure of ourselves to relax and enjoying our special day.
The bridal sweet was beautiful and the food served from the wedding breakfast to the home made pie at night was on another level.
we had an absolutely incredible day and our guests loved it just as much as we did
Thank you again to all the staff that made it all possible
Hayden and Megan
- steph_family (10/5): Amazing Wedding Venue - Wow what can I say, the venue is absolutely perfect, we held our wedding here on 31st May 2025 and had the most perfect day. We couldn’t have wish for anything better. All the staff were amazing & went above and beyond, these guys are definitely experts when it come to weddings
I want to give a special thanks to Hannah who coordinated our day, she did absolutely amazing !! Everything was absolutely perfect.
The staff who also worked the bar were amazing and were very personable.
Thank you for all the memories you have given us, it’s a day we will never forget, wish I could do it all over again.
- N8579YFsarahj (10/5): Breakfast at the crown hotel - A quick stop for breakfast at the Crown hotel Bawtry. Excellent service from Ava, Aymee and Maddie. The food was tasty and surroundings are lovely. Highly recommend the Yorkshire breakfast, sausages and bacon were particularly good. Will not disappoint.
- Jaye577 (10/5): Amazing place - What can we say about the Crown at Bawtry, truly amazing. We’ve just had our wedding there and we couldn’t have chosen a better place. From the time of booking Tori our wedding planner was not only professional but friendly, warm and kind. We chose the Crown due to its dog friendly policy and our little pooch was treated like royalty from start to finish. All the staff made such a fuss of her and made sure she had food and water throughout the day. The wedding room is stunning, tastefully decorated with an amazing private courtyard. On the day Hannah our wedding co-ordinator couldn’t have done more for us from start to finish making sure we both were calm and was where we needed to be at all stages of the day. I’ve never been to any hotel/venue where every single member of staff are as friendly kind and thoughtful. Every little detail was taken care of for us and the food was just amazing both for the wedding and also for Dinner the night before and breakfast. We honestly can’t think of anything that could’ve been done better.
This place is the perfect venue for any occasion and every single staff member are 5 star.
We thank the whole team front and back of house for making our day truly amazing and we look forward to going back many times in the future.
- pammD9281NH (10/5): The Crown always good for a coffee and lunch - Had a lovely lunch with friends
Karen was lovely from start to finish, and thanks Ruby for your kindness. Great vegan tagine option for me! Hallumi skewers and burgers for the others. We'll be back on our next visit. As always looked after very well. Thanks.
- 999mickw (10/5): Great food - A wonderful meal on Saturday night with friends , big thanks to Ruby and Ava who looked after us with great service and big smiles , the steaks were amazing big choice of food across starters mains and pudding great atmosphere and very nicely decorated love the celling flower arrangement
- Verified traveler (8/5): An overnight stay - We booked a room for a wedding reception. The staff members were polite, friendly and efficient. The room was lovely but too warm overnight.
Breakfast was extra but worth the money.
- monty2828 (8/5): Overnight business trip - Stayed here for one night whilst on a work business trip
Rooms are ok, a little dated but clean and comfortable enough
Staff were very friendly and welcoming
Food was excellent, both evening meal and breakfast (Highly recommend the Pie for an evening meal but be warned it isn’t for the faint hearted)
All in all nice enough
- Karl (4/5): Suprisingly dissapointing. - Never once were we did the words "welcome to the hotel" or "have a nice stay" were spoken at reception or written in any messages. All we recieveed was a message listing the additional charges (car parking, early or late check in chareges) the day before our trip & at the reception I was simply told to put my personal details on the booking receipt & that if we wanted breafast it would be another additional charge & to go to the restaurant in the morning. The hotels facilities were never described to us either.
The room was clearly booked for two adults, but once in the room it had only been set up for a single occupancy (towels, milk for drinks etc)
The hotel & the room we had were fine & of a high standard. But, the customer service we recived was extremely poor.
Bawtry is a great little town with lots of bars restaurants etc. We live very closeby & were at a family wedding. We decided to stay here rather than relying in taxis. It wont happen again.
- mankini100 (10/5): Good overall - Came for a wedding. Food was great, and the overall event was great. The barman elliott was especially good. Efficient, friendly and happy to help. The function room is attractive and spacious. All round good effort from the staff. Would recommend.
- michelle (10/5): - M
- Anthony (6/5): - Old and run down. Pillows were ripped bed uncomfortable. Was only there for one night will never go again
- fjrsmithy (2/5): Don't hold your breath! - Decided to treat my wife to a late lunch. to day.
One of the worst meals in my 82 years on this earth without a shadow of doubt. My food was burnt beyond recognition and my wife's chicken Milanese was saturated in tomato sauce to the poiunt of a soggy mess and accompaied by a further jug of tomatoe looking gunge. Both meals were accompanied by a huge pile of tasteless, cardboard like, McCains oven chip things. The whole mess was lukewarm and looked second hand!
Good poiunts - Very pleasant staff, Mangeress offered a free sweet and coffee to make up for the mess and the £46 bottle of Sancerre was delicious.
- H3721LZkellya (4/5): Wedding Day - Firstly I have tried to deal with the crown 1st before writing the review but in almost 2 weeks I’ve had no response.
We booked our wedding with the crown early 2022. We picked almost the most expensive package as we wanted a Christmas wedding so the package alone was 10.5k.
We booked the crown as we had seen so many good reviews of it and we fell in love with it as soon as we saw it.
On the run up to the wedding we felt like we did hear very much from the crown, we had to chase them to talk about arrangements., and whenever we visited the crown we felt that we were more of a hinderance than a priority, we took our photographer to have a look around and whenever we spoke to the desk we were just told ok you know where you are going and left to our own devices!
We called again couple of months before the wedding as no one had called to speak about details and arranged a meeting. We gave all the info and were told we needed to email them over asap what all the guests wanted to eat. I also made them aware that I had booked a room on the Friday night for me and my mum to stay in and for everyone to get ready in, I told them it needed to be a ground floor due to my mums mobility issues. We asked to pay the balance for the wedding and were told it’s ok we will send you a link to pay. I had to chase the link!
2 weeks before the wedding the crown called chasing the balance we had already paid! I should I guessed then that things would not go smoothly.
3 days before the wedding I get a message saying they could not accommodate the room we requested for the Friday as all the large rooms were up 2 flights of stairs! So either we had to get ready 10 of us in a small room downstairs or make my mum climb 2 flights of stairs.
Obviously I was very upset at this and after quite a few heated messages they gave us 2 rooms so my mum would not have to constantly go up the stairs.
We were then contacted by the actual wedding coordinator and told we would need to meet with him before the wedding! Obviously those few days before the wedding are very busy but it was eventually agreed I would meet him alone on the Friday night as I was staying there.
Friday night and I met with the coordinator and went through the details again that I had already given and he advised me that because of the issues I had they were putting me in the bridal suite the night before and as it was only 1 flight of stairs that would be better for my mum. I thanked him and said I would need to move the stuff i had taken up the 2 flights of stairs and the things that the staff had taken up for me. We will move everything for you great, I although being now alone the night before my wedding due to the room issues I thought we were all sorted. Then came the wedding day. On the day we had the storm in dec!
Despite me twice giving the song choices they got the song we walked out of the ceremony wrong! Vital things like the telephone guest book were never put out, the DJ despite asking me what kind of music to play until 2 hrs later when someone went to tell him there was not a Christmas song in site despite the Christmas wedding.
The last part I have only just been made aware of, the food was lovely not one person has had anything bad ti say about the quality of the food but! When your guests are told despite me giving the hotel a full list of what everyone wanted the last table were told they could not have the starters they had asked for as they had run out and were told the same for the main!!!
I do not expect when we have paid that amount of money to be told that my guests did not get what they asked for that’s not acceptable at all.
I really hope no other bride and groom goes through this with the crown and I really hope everyone’s wedding goes perfectly and that my experience was a one off! But I felt it was important to write this review so they are aware of their failings and can hopefully learn from it.
- kimberleyr914 (10/5): Excellent Hotel, Lovely Rooms and Great Food - We stayed at The Crown Hotel the night before our Wedding at Bawtry Hall.
We had interconnecting rooms and an executive room. Both were fantastic, modern, comfortable and clean.
We ate in the restaurant the night before and for breakfast and on both occasions the food was delicious, with great service, from polite staff.
Throughout our stay the staff were so kind, friendly, and accommodating.
We would highly recommended the hotel and will be returning. Thank you!!
- veralunaost (8/5): Rooms ok - great staff - Stayed here last night.
When we initially drove into the car park it was full but spaces did become available later in the evening, so something to be aware about. Also you have to pay for parking.
When we arrived into the entrance area, we were greeted by a very friendly and bubbly receptionist, I think she said her name was Janelle? She checked us in and gave us information about our stay and also gave us recommendations of places to eat and drink in the area. She also seemed quite knowledgable about the local history which we chatted about for a while which was great too!
We were told that our room was on the other side of the hotel so headed over. The room itself was clean but a little disappointing as some of the furniture seemed quite old and worn out and it was quite dark.
We headed down to the bar for some drinks before going out for dinner. The atmosphere was great and the bar staff were lovely and attentive.
Checked out in the morning which was straightforward but didn't bother with breakfast as it was £17.50 each! which we thought was pretty steep so opted to go elsewhere.
Overall a good stay, staff are great, but the rooms could do with being refurnished to be worth the price.
- Navjot (4/5): Poor facilities - No heating in the room, no hot water in the shower and no drinking water in the room.
Staff very friendly but very poor facilities.
To cap it off, Bawtry including the hotel restaurant don’t serve food after 9pm in week days.
- ROBERT (8/5): Quick Family Visit - Hi - clean / good service/ good location/ functional
- Jamie (6/5): Disappointed with a few things especially for cost - Situated in a nice town with good facilities.
Disappointed with a few things. Parking was near impossible, there were more spaces available but because of how tight the car park is, and how other people had parked, it was impossible to access the spare spaces.
No water in the rooms which I find poor when you consider the price we paid for a Thursday night - almost £200 for the night.
The bathroom was very nice and had a great waterfall shower however we couldn’t get any hot water from the shower - it was warm at best.
The room however was nice & it was clean.
- Lee (10/5): - Nice place friendly staff good food and atmosphere
- Ron (10/5): - Updated rooms and staff friendly as ever. Dog friendly.
- Lee (8/5): Nice, friendly, comfortable hotel - Good location within the town. Easy parking at a reasonable price. Helpful and friendly reception staff. The only reason we scored overall 4 stars rather than 5 was because we gave up waiting to be served at the bar as there was only one bartender.
