Guest Reviews
Nichts.
- Deepa (9/5): Lovely memorable stay with wonderful views, calming onsen and warm hosts - We really enjoyed our stay at Hounkan and was made memorable by our hosts especially Kyoko who patiently Google translated and explained all our dishes at breakfast and dinner so we could appreciate and enjoy the local produce.
The view from the room of the hills in Yoshino was amazing and I also enjoyed the onsen that has both an indoor and outdoor section.
The hotel is along the main walking route in Yoshino so it is easy to set off from there to the walking trails in the area The hotel is a bit far from the train station but the hotel offers a shuttle pick up and drop off - just need to arrange timings with them beforehand.

Niets
- Simon (10/5): Wonderful ryokan stay. - The staff and the owner were wonderfully friendly and helpful. The room was very calming and with a lovely view. I can't think of anything.
- Hiromichi (7/5): -

- Marco (10/5): - Old school, traditional hotel with magnificent views. Staff made us feel special- so kind, cordial, and distinguished. A wonderful experience to be there off-season communication pre-check in: we did not know there was a convenient free shuttle service from the train station and it was a little hard to figure out how to get there

- Andrew (9/5): - Beautiful view from our room. Superb dinner and breakfast with local specialities. Good onsen bath. Being out of season, it was very quiet. It's expensive, but not compared with other ryoukan, and it's worth paying to be in Yoshino and for the individual attention and cuisine.
- KATIE (1/5): -
- Eli (10/5): Outstanding staying with true old Japanese feeling - The staff are EXCEPTIONAL, we were amazed, really.
The room is big and so CLEAN, the view is amazing.
The highlight of our trip. The only thing that was missing was a net for the big window, because of mosquitoes, so we left it closed and used the AC.
But that’s really irrelevant compared to everything else.
- Olivier (9/5): - We had a wonderful time, thank you.

- Charlotte (10/5): Charming hosts serving excellent Japanese cuisine at the foot of an ancient UNESCO pilgrimage trail. - You sense immediately the history of this establishment (it started as a monastic lodge in 1754). Exceptional kaiseki dinner and breakfast with a large selection of classic Japanese dishes all made from local produce. The view from the hotel room was breathtaking and the outdoor onsen, which you could access in the morning, was a treat. The couple running the place were so attentive and charming. The women's onsen only gives access to the outdoor onsen in the morning.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - The food was amazing and staff were super friendly.
- Rodney (10/5): A wonderful Mt Yoshino Retreat - This ryokan is an exceptional establishment, in a great location with impeccable staff. The view from the rooms is incredible in Spring and I imagine the autumn colours are equally wonderful. The staff make every effort to make their guest comfortable and at ease during their stay. This includes an incredible kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast with attentive explanations for non Japanese-speaking guests.
The ryokan is well positioned relative to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites that make Mt Yoshino an incredible location for culture, history and nature. There are minor repairs requires to some small finishes in the rooms and some ryokan facilities. This would make this stay 10/10 across the board
- Caroline (10/5): Best ryokan experience - Exceptional view from the spacious room, wonderful dinner and breakfast, very friendly and devoted service.
- Forbes (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kgh069 (10/5): Exceptional - A traditional feeling Ryokan, not too expensive, very attentive owners.
The view from the room was beautiful and so relaxing after walking all around Yoshino.
The onsen was fantastic, especially the side with the working outdoor tub.
The meals were very special, with dietary needs accommodated when expressed.
- Sergei (9/5): Great ryuokan - This is a large place ran by an elderly team. Great kaiseki-style dinner and breakfast. Super spacious room. Ours had hand carved wooden decorations and consisted of two actual rooms. Very comfy futons. Two baths, they switch between them morning and night sometimes ncan experience both. Absolutely wonderful staff!
Close to local vista points with beautiful views!
Overall a bit on a pricey side but very much worth it. One of baths had the outdoor part closed, so you can only bathe in the indoor pool.
- Zhz (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful place, beautiful hotel, the staff is great. A typical Japanese experience, breakfast and great I loved discovering a lot of foods that I don't usually eat. The view from the room is just sumptuous Sad that the evening meal is not counted in the price of the room, the price was quite high I would have also wanted to test
- Christopher (10/5): - Wonderful stay. Lovely kaiseki dinner. The staff were super attentive and friendly. The hot spings were clean and very relaxing after a long day walking and driving. Oh and the view from the room in the morning across the valley was stunning
- Vee (10/5): Love the service and the staffs are friendly and helpful. It makes the stay excellent and memorable. - A pleasant surprise of the pick up at the train station given that I sent out my request rather late. The staff is amicable, helpful and sincere. His good service truly brightened up our stay in Yoshino! The property is well maintained but a little old. Would be great to upgrade and renovate the room to provide further comfort.
- Diana (10/5): Great place would stay again - Excellent service, friendly staff, happy to help, took care of you moment arrived. Food was amazing and very generous. Location good to see all the Temples and shrines.
- Kyoko (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mehmet (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jessica (10/5): - Total relaxation and we'll needed downtime. The staff at this were wonderful and welcoming. The area was beautiful, the hotel looks out onto sweeping mountain landscape. We enjoyed the indoor onsen and slept soundly in our traditional accommodations. The food was very impressive, so carefully presented and delicious. We ate breakfast and dinner here but also tried some restaurants with walking distance that did not disappoint. A remarkable experience, thank you for your hospitality.
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (9/5): A great experience at a traditional japanese inn with kind hosts. - The owner and staff are very kind and caring. The woman who serves the meals was great and took time to help us understand what all the varieties of food were. It is a great traditional japanese inn experience with a nice onsen and good quality meals. The location has great views as well, it would be excellent during cherry blossom season.
- Bern (7/5): Good -
- Hardikar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Grace (10/5): - Excellent service from the staff: attentive, kind, respectful and proactive to my needs. Breakfast and dinner get better the longer you stay. It’s a value ryokan fit for relaxation in the mountains
- Wai Hong (6/5):
- Jane (10/5): An amazing place to spend our last few nights in Japan. - The staff were so helpful and friendly, it was lovely to be welcomed with tea and sweets. The food/banquet was absolutely delicious, and the staff were helpful in guiding us through the various meals. I had asked for meals without meat and the chef was very accommodating which I really appreciated.
It was lovely to come back from dinner to find our room prepared for sleeping. Felt very well looked after, thank you.
And the view from our room was spectacular. We misunderstood the timings of the outdoor onsen. We thought it alternated times between men and women but in fact women were always outside in the mornings only so we missed the chance to bathe outdoors.
- Michael (7/5): Good - Staff friendly
- Glenn (9/5): Superb - Lovely room with a view. The staff were very helpful. The outside onsen was very nice. our booking did not include dinner, but we quite enjoyed the breakfast. one of the onsens (switch every day between make/female) did not have outside onsen functioning and the inside onsen was nothing special.
- Ai (9/5): Nice inn with a beautiful view and food - Beautiful view of the trees and mountain from room window. Good spread of food for dinner. Indoor and outdoor onsen available. Great location for hiking. Nothing
- Shoko (10/5): The amazing view! Would love to go back in the Sakura season! - The open air bath in the room. I didn’t know we’d have one so it was a great surprise!
The view from the room and dining room.
Welcome tea and sweets served on the Irori floor.
Waka the Shiba Inu :) The road to the hotel was partially blocked for pedestrians due to the GW holidays and needed to drive around. Seemed like the hotel wasn’t aware of it but it’d be nice to be informed in advance.
- Ian (8/5): well located. very traditional hotel with amazing Japanese breakfasts - this is a very traditional Japanese hotel. located in walking distance from the UNESCO village snd sakura. a terrific onsen. quite large. The breakfasts were stunning. quite spectacular in the way they were presented. the staff were so friendly and endeavoured to help us even though we had little Japanese. highly recommended nothing really. it is an older hotel but that is what made it unique and comfortable.
- Ka (8/5): Very good - The breakfast is great, the view in the room is amazing. We like the style and setting of the hotel, including the room. The staffs are willing to help and very kind. The outdoor hot spring is closed this morning. A bit sad.
- Christopher (10/5): Only-in-Japan Ryokan Experience - Hounkan is a no-brainer for Yoshino - complete with Inn Dog! - The Hounkan Inn is an excellent Ryokan situated on the upper rings of Yoshino Town, offering an exclusively "Japanese" experience in terms of accommodation (Spacious Tatami Rooms), Scenery (Maple Leaves in the Fall, Cherry Blossoms in the Spring) and Cuisine (A set Japanese course menu for Breakfast and Dinner with no idea what you're gonna get, but you'll enjoy nonetheless!).
A fantastic choice for first-time travelers to Yoshino and for any potential Hikers who wish to experience all the beauty and splendor of the Japanese Forest Mountains. Yoshino itself is a UNESCO sanctioned location offering exquisite Shrines all over the Mountain with non-stop spectacular snapshots of scenery for all seasons. I got to see it in the Autumn but I can only imagine if you were to be there during Spring as its Cherry Blossom central. But be warned, the Staff taught us that to get that you have to book MONTHS in advance so if that is on your wish-list, get cracking early!
The Inn also has their local celebrity mascot - a gorgeous and friendly Shiba Inu named Waka! A comforting presence after a day of sightseeing or hiking when in Yoshino. Not something I didn't like, just some advice for any travelers that if your Inn offers a meal package for dinner, it is better to take it.
Restaurants close by 5~6PM (if not earlier). There may be one or two open late but for us that required walking out in the dark and the cold to find them - hence why having the meal in the Inn was the better option. Just a piece of advice.
- Yue (10/5): All good. - View from room window is fantastic. I can imagine how it will be amazing when cherry blossoms.
Dinner and breakfast are delicious, waiters and waitresses are all very friendly and nice. I know it is hard but it will be great if some of the facilities can be renewed.
- Kosuke (9/5): Superb -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
