- Lewis (8/5): Very enjoyable - Friendly staff and good powerful shower
- Sue (8/5): Excellent stay in a perfect location - Lovely room Pillow quality
- Goodison (6/5): - The staff were really unfriendly and unhelpful

- Rebecca (8/5): A lovely stay great staff and food - we will be back! - The grounds and location of the hotel were great. All the staff we encountered were very helpful and friendly. The food was lovely (both evening meal and breakfast) and arrived piping hot. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. There was a choice of social spaces including a cozy lounge or bright bar/restaurant area as well as lots of outside space. We were worried the bar attached to the hotel might be noisy but we were not disturbed at all by noise in the bedroom. I thought the price point made this stay exceptional value for money and we will be returning. There was not much to dislike.
The standard double rooms are small as are the bathrooms which is worth noting if you're booking a hotel for the room alone. But the social spaces downstairs balance this out. The building is old so there was the occasional creak as other guests made their way to bed but this is normal for any hotel. There are parts of the building and furniture which could do with some redecorating but again, for the price point, this was not an issue for us.
- Alice (10/5): Fab 👌 - Arrived to a lovely little private car park and received a very warm welcome from the reception staff, who already had my room prepared. I was absolutely thrilled with the room — modern, spacious, and immaculately clean. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the room had everything I needed for a perfect stay.
The gardens were stunning, the food in the restaurant was delicious, and it was only a 7-minute drive into the centre of Durham. I’ll definitely be back!

- Chris (10/5): Quaint and peaceful Manor House with great breakfast and lovely staff. - Beautiful quiet location with great views and a lovely styling. Very clean and peaceful. Great staff and very accommodating with breakfast.
- Steve (7/5): Ok for one night but won’t return - Large comfortable room with modern bathroom. Staff very pleasant . Very pleasant stable bar & Sunday lunch was very tasty & seemed homemade. Lovely views. Entry door , area was needing upgrading, chipped paintwork, old doors. Bedroom had bad smell of stale vomit/ smoking.
Some rough clientele, swearing loudly.
- DAVID (5/5): Lack of staff - Grand old building Bed was uncomfortable, small shower and use of bathroom facilities was a squeeze
- Claire (5/5): - Bed was comfortable. Hotel looks pretty. Middle of nowhere. Food stops serving at 4pm on Sundays. Rooms are very small. Drinks are expensive.

- Chris (5/5): Sadly it could do so better - We visited this as our great uncle was born here when it was a Manor House. We had been invited by email to book for dinner & It all looked good online No idea where reception is from the car par park … no help with suitcases for 3 guests all in their late 70’s. Our 2 rooms were tiny and our ‘cosy’ double was minute . The kettle had to sit on the floor and I had to sleep the other way to compensate for the sloping mattress/floor! We had booked in to dinner days before, but were told …at the table …that 3 mains were unavailable as the menu was changing and then later informed …when looking at puddings…. that there were no desserts for the same reason. We felt so sorry for the young waiter having to deliver this ridiculous news!
- kathy (9/5): Very nice stay, would stay again. - Extremely friendly staff.
Lovely gardens to sit and enjoy a drink.
I had dinner, it was excellent.
The room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The bathroom, particularly shower cubicle was small, but for the price I’m not complaining
- Janette (10/5): Beautiful location, stunning surroundings on the inside as well as outside. - The staff were very welcoming from start to finish.
Beautiful views and peaceful.
Food was very tasty.😊 My own thing I didn't find comfortable were the pillows.
Mine are a little softer.
But everyone has their own taste for things like this.
It will not stop me from revisiting.🥰
- David (6/5): I have been coming here for 15 years and love the hotel but the food lets it down. - Location, staff The food was poor

- Marco (8/5): Great one night stay in County Durham - We came to stay at 61 Durham for my son's university open day and whilst it was a short journey out side of the city centre, it felt like you were away from the crowds and surrounded by countryside. In addition, there was a good selection of hot foods on the breakfast menu. Room was slightly on the small side but absolutely fine for one night. Worth also noting that the hotel kitchen closes at 8.30pm for dinner.
- Rachel (9/5): Lovely hotel in peaceful location. - Lovely room; really comfortable bed, excellent shower; view over back garden.
Excellent evening meal and breakfast with wide choice of hot and cold items. Nothing. We really enjoyed our stay. Thank you.
- Susanna (9/5): - An excellent hotel with friendly staff, great food and very comfortable beds. Wonderful view from the bedroom too. The cosy double was great value for money and fine for one person, at the same time acknowledging that the bathroom was a little tight for space!
- Graham (3/5): Did not live up to its potential. - Nil Felt tired and shabby, not helped by a lack of cleaning. Food poorly cooked. The staff were friendly.
- samantha (8/5): -
- Loraine (7/5): Was ok - Good breakfast
Location Bathroom was very small
- John (9/5): Great value and very comfortable - Old property but clean and characterful. A few damp patches but a 150 year old building so going to have
- Christina (5/5): - Spacious room, very powerful shower, lovely countryside setting The rooms could do with a thorough deep clean - the double deluxe I stayed in was full of dust!
Not sure what the chefs were cooking at 2am but woke up to a very strong ‘cooking’ smell which kept me awake and feeling sick for hours…even with the window open to vent the smell away!
- Abby (3/5): - Nice grounds, staff pleasant Not 4* luxury as advertised!! Stains all over bedroom carpet, out of date coffee granules, stains all over window seat, very shabby bedroom furniture, poor breakfast
- Janet (9/5): A beautiful old building now a lovely hotel. We really enjoyed our visit - We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and we were put in the very lovely sanctuary suite where they had left a card and chocolates for us. Evening meal was really good. Staff attentive. Lovely surroundings. All excellent Not many staff although the ones there were very good. Sometimes we felt there was no one around

- eba041e2849772cb7cc4299ae01f1fb0 (9/5): Friendly staff, good food in the restaurant, good location - Good location comfortable bed and good food Creaky floor from room above.
- Paul (5/5): Sub standard - Location was very good, the place looked great A Sunday roast lunch menu only is available all day Sunday. This is not mentioned on their site. We definitely would not have stayed had we known prior to turning up.
Also, the towel rail did not work in one of the rooms (worked fine in the other) and this made the bathroom quite chilly.
The whole place is in need of some upkeep (the print around the windows was severely flaking). This is a real shame as it could be a beautiful place.
- Bojana (8/5): -
- FIONA (8/5): This is a nice hotel to stay in. - The staff, food, hotel in general. The hotel does not have a lift. Also the room we had the shower was too small and you had to squeeze yourself in and out.
- denise (10/5): -
- Mark (10/5): - Size of rooms, nice and wholesome. Breakfast really good
- Sam (8/5): -
- Stephen (7/5): - Staff were great. Food was really good. Unfortunately, the people in the next room were extremely loud & obnoxious. They had no regard for other guests who had work etc the following day.
- Nigel (8/5): Value for money - Location good powerful shower and Restaurant food excellent
- Alexandra (8/5): Great value and welcoming staff. - Lovely eating area for breakfast. Our upgraded room was very nicely done with a great double shower. The staff were super helpful and upgraded us to give us a bath with no extra cost. Some of the decor is a little tired. It’s clearly being worked on though as some areas are well decorated, so it’s a bit hit and miss.
- Steve (8/5): -
- Helen (5/5): Disappointing - Lovely location We found the carpet dirt and rucked up. We could feel every spring in the bed. This was room 220
- Sophie (8/5): -
- Stephen (7/5): -
- Graham2020 (8/5): -
- Christine (8/5): - Staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms clean and comfortable. Limited Sunday menu in restaurant. No light meals available for lunch.
- Abra (10/5): -
- Newman (6/5): -
- Jennifer (8/5): -
- Martin (7/5): Ok but not brilliant - Great breakfast and location
WI-FI ok
Friendly staff Our room was very small and did not even have one chair,
The toilet and shower was ok but again very small
The carpet was stained
One of the electrical safety labels was dated 2022
- Mark (9/5): -
- Norman (8/5): I’d stay again. - Lovely gardens and setting. Staff were friendly.
- Stuart (7/5): Nice place, friendly staff, attention to detail with the food and the bedrooms need done TLC. - Nice gardens, relaxing bar. The rooms cold be cleaner. Cobwebs on the ceiling and the carpet needed replacing. No extraction in the bedroom- 104. Walls thin and can hear the next door guests.
Cooked breakfast was ok. The sausage and bacon was nice. The hash brown and beans were cold. The coffee is served out of a camping flask and the offering for a continental breakfast is limited.
- Jackie (4/5): I would not stop here again it looked very tired like it had had a quick going over - The bed was about the best thing Bathroom was far too small. I know it was a cozy room that’s when it was advertised as and it sure was cozy. The toilet bathroom was so tiny and the carpet was absolutely filthy. there was a kettle in the wardrobe but there was no plug so you had to take the kettle to the other side of the room and put it on the floor where there was a plug not very safe if you was walking by.
- Charles (10/5): -
- Kyle (7/5): Great location - Location was beautiful, the breakfasts were done well, front desk staff was officious but the rest of the staff were great. Room was comfortable. The dining area was a hybrid of a dining room and bar. In particular there was an annoying customer listening to a program on her cellphone without using earbuds...we all got to listen to the noise. I asked staff to request the person to use ear buds or else turn it off and the staff just looked at me bewildered. Generally though the staff were great, but we now seem to live in a post-COVID culture where no one wants to maintain civility.
- Nora (7/5): - The staff location cleaness Paid for a deluxe double only got a cosy double
- Chris (9/5): Out of Town retreat -
- Usmani (1/5): -
- David (8/5): -
- Rev Elizabeth (8/5): Food excellent. - Food was excellent. Staff friendly and helpful. On the first day they didn't finish cleaning our room and left the door unlocked. It was very noisy on the second night. And nobody seemed to stop the people doing it.
- Sandra (8/5): Comfortable stay, interesting building and good setting. Pity breakfasts are not included - Lovely setting with easy access to Durham town centre 15-20 mins drive. Really interesting building with comfortable rooms and great shower. Evening meals very good. Wish the breakfast could have been included, even if it was just continental. Cleaning needed further attention dust on mirror and light fitting. Lots of scuffs and some stains on the walls.
- Laura (10/5): -
- Joanne (6/5): Terrible - Little out dated, walls are so thin, could hear everything from everyone. People walking up the stairs, people in next room. Breakfast was awful, eggs undercooked and sausage(if that's what you would call it) was more like a log, it was so hard, as if it was cooked 2 weeks ago
- Peter (10/5): Nice place and helpful and friendly staff - Clean and comfortable
- Tim (9/5): - Great place. Near to where we needed to be. No overhead lights in room.
- jamie (10/5): The staff were simply fantastic, a credit to their employers - Lovely property , beautiful staircase, beautifully decorated Nothing
- David (1/5): Please read before booking - The location, staff and hotel view it's self Freezing cold
Sorry shower tray
Dirty toilet
- Mohammad (4/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): -
- Yanjun (10/5): -
- Carolina (9/5): -
- Paul (9/5): Great stay! - Friendly staff and good location. Good food quality at all meals and sensible pricing. Good size room, and very warm and serviced daily. No lift! No mirror near socket for hair dryer.
- Ann (10/5): -
- Billy (10/5): -
- Ping (8/5): 很好 -
- Jane (9/5): - Beautiful building and decor The rooms were incredibly hot, no air con or fan and the window only opened a tiny bit
- Shemin (5/5): good location, has potential currently not operating at four star level - they did try to did try to compensate by upgrading one of the rooms, i had booked two rooms cleanliness very poor, deluxe room was so basic, no cupboards and very tight
- Jackie (3/5): Room was small and poky bed was to small for 2 people - The plase is very worn and the carpets are filthy
- Antonia (10/5): Relaxing stay in a fabulous hotel - The staff were so welcoming on arrival, infact all the staff we encountered were fabulous. We were delighted to get a room upgrade on arrival, our room was very spacious, beautifully decorated and had a fabulous shower! The breakfast menu is extensive.
This is a really lovely hotel in the countryside but close to Durham. We will most certainly return!

- Michelle (10/5): -
- Caroline (10/5): -
- Robin (8/5): -
- Ashley (8/5): Lovely location and lovely staff - Room was lovely, bathroom was clean and really nice, the shower was amazing. TV was unwatchable, the signal was patchy. This did not bother me as I had my Ipad so was able to use that with the free Wi-Fi, I did report it on check out so they can resolve for any other guests.
- Andrew (7/5): -
- Daniel (7/5): -
- Jacqueline (8/5): Great short overnight stay. - Staff were helpful and friendly. Breakfast wasn’t value for money. Walls were a bit thin as we could hear people in the next room.
- Mick (8/5): -
- Twemlow (3/5): Very comfy bed in a nice location near Durham but tired rooms and poor food let it down. - Room was OK, nice bathroom and great bed. Second room was awful with dirty floor. Mail went missing. Very disappointed. Poor food. Dirty floor.
- Shelley Wilkes (10/5): - Beautiful place!
We stayed in the Sanctuary suite and it was so lovely. Bed was extremely comfortable and facilities were great.
Staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was delicious, especially the eggs. A couple of the lamps weren't working in our room.
Lighting was a bit dusty.
Apart from that everything was perfect.
- Buckton (10/5): -
- Jonny (9/5): - Tranquil settings, beautiful historic building and interior, fantastic food and relaxing setting Small shower but not complaining
- Danielle (10/5): - Beautiful place, nice decor, sanctuary room was stunning. Nothing
- Ronald (5/5): Friendly, shabby, great breakfast, don't dine there. - The staff were welcoming and friendly, and the breakfast was good and well cooked to order with a good selection of bread, teacakes and crumpets available to toast on the buffet. Juices and coffee were also on the buffet, while the choice of food to order was excellent. The dining room was large and bright with windows onto a nice garden. Although the house was a large and historic one it was rather neglected. The carpets needed replacing and the pillows had lost all their plumpness. Although large. the dining room was uncarpeted, the tables had no cloths and the plastic chairs let the place down. We had dinner, which was a mistake. The food appeared to be heated up rather than freshly cooked, and the chips were enormous, pale, flaccid and not properly peeled.
