- Richard (7/5): Great history and location. - The great location and history
Comfortable bed. The showers and toilets were separate
- Chantelle (9/5): - Was clean tidy, staff food drinks great Being above a pub, it was ok that noise went on till around 11pm, but it was very annoying the cleaner had her music blaring from pre 7am the following morning, and was pumping thru the bedroom which meant less than 8hours quiet time for a decent sleep.
- Angie (7/5): -
- Steve (9/5): Great - Nice and clean, with lots of character. My only complaint was how noise other guests where leaving there rooms and the building. Letting doors slam shut. Idiots!!
- Faye (10/5): A beautiful heritage hotel. Staff real obliging/friendly/helpful. -
- Gerda (7/5): Staff was very helpful and loved the history of the old hotel. Definitely worth our stay. - Staff very friendly en helpful.

Place needs more maintenance.

- Peter (9/5): Check in was quick and easy, was amazing meals and service by the restaurant staff and the bar staff -
- Richard (8/5): Very good -
- Gerard (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (4/5): Would not consider staying again. - fantastic showers broken window so could not air room as I could not keep it open. one of the duty managers needs to reconsider her employment. NO staff working during checkout so unable to recovery key security if paid cash. would never stay again.. Now I understand why a couple locals say you do not go here if you want service.. it's a shame as there are some nice staff and the upgrades look promising
- Natasha (8/5): Hotel with a story - The Hotel is rumored to be haunted. I like that aspect and was informed of the resident ghosts room. Next time I can book to stay in that room. Everything I needed to stay one night was in the room. I shared toilets but that meant the cost was low. The bed was very old and the springs were very squeaky. But this did add to the oldness and character of a hotel built in the 1840s. The only other "bad" thing is that you have the music and bar noise until 1230am on a Friday and Saturday night but you are told about this in the booking. I just took a headphone headband to cancel some of the noise out.
- Paul (8/5): Very good - The hotel is historic and old, nice bathrooms.
Close to town.
- Thomas (5/5): Shower installation - The showers were terrible! Whilst having a shower the water filled up the entire enclosure I was showering in. I believe there are serious drainage faults on how the showers were installed. The drainoff angle is very wrong and needs to be rectified immediately! I also noticed this the last time I stayed there, please fix this asap
- John (2/5): Liked the location and the theme but the accommodation issues need to be addressed - Wasnt open for Breakfast TV wasnt working, no air-conditioning or fans, the window to the bedroom was nailed shut and could not be opened, the bed was rock hard, had to buy a mattress protector to make usable, the mattress was stained due to no mattress protector. The ensuite had cobwebs and spiders all around the windows, there was and still is a dead bird outside the ensuite window,
I wasnt expecting a palace as pub accommodation, however the lack of some simple care and attention has dropped the bar substantially at the Kentish.
- Innesp (7/5): Good -
- Howard (1/5): Bad - Nothing All
- Wendy (10/5): Was a great stay, thank you. Would come back . - Well situated . Clean and tidy . Staff friendly , helpful, respectful and polite 🙂
- Grant (7/5): Good -
- Stu (10/5): Historic pubs are awesome, go stay in them and spend money in them. - Awesome vibes, bit of live music, friendly locals, great staff. Accommodation was comfortable and clean.
Had a great time, will definitely go back.
Highly recommended.
- Allister (6/5): Pleasant -
- John (6/5): - This is an old pub, the owners are fixing up rooms and renting them. They were friendly, but this is not a regular hotel. We were there on New Years Eve, and there was a DJ and loud party until well into the new year. Room was small, with no shower. We had a toilet, but had to go out into hallway to get to a shared shower.
- Jan (5/5): The staff were friendly and tried to make us comfortable and looked after but we got the impression that the hotel recen - The historic building The music from the bar goes right up into the rooms
- William (9/5): Extremely happy with my stay - The food and staff were excellent. I didn't dislike anything, the beds and bedding were a little dated but they're renovating so after that itll be great
- Janice (5/5): Hotel ok for 1 night - the key issue spoilt that for us. - A nice restaurant Insisted on charging $20 deposit for the room key though they could not guarantee getting the money back early in the morning from the staff. (Only from 9am) we waited reluctantly until 08:50 because we needed to meet up with some friends. no-one arrived! I also suggest that there should be a safe box for the keys.
- Pania (6/5): Not great. Under construction - Could not get in until night staff arrived
Had to wait hours to get in
- Stephen (3/5): Poor -
- Jessica (6/5): Under renovation and loud music - If you are staying here on a weekend, know the walls and floor are PAPER thin and they blast music from 9pm until 11:30pm. It was impossible for my parents to sleep through it. The price was low but I wouldn’t recommend unless you have bass proof ear plugs or a heavy sleeper. It’s still under renovation so be aware if that. Also, it said bathroom was in room but it IS a shared bathroom out of the room. On the plus side, the rooftop balcony had tables and chairs. Climbing out of the window to hangout there was definitely a highlight of the evening.
- Rose (7/5): An experience in an historical building with friendly staff and great dinners - and again, staff! - Breakfast does not begin before 11am so that was too late for us as we were due to drive to visits at 9:15am. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant staff were amazing. Both rooms were clean and tidy. Toilets were also very clean and well maintained. There was a shared kitchen area for guests to use. We knew ahead there would be live music, which on the Friday night was pleasant to hear - from our rooms. Loved the history of the old building dating to 1853, I think. The towels provided in the room were pretty well-used and there were throws on the beds in our rooms which felt awful to touch. We had to check in at the public bar, there was no one there to take our booking initially and it took a while as they appeared short staffed. We had not been told renovations were on going - which when finished will be good. We also were unaware that there was a twenty dollar charge for keys which was repaid upon departure - via a cleaner who was very friendly. There was a walk to have a shower, a closer walk to toilets - near our rooms. Sat. night the DJ was full of playing bass, it was much louder than Friday night and very disruptive to sleep.
- Storm28 (10/5): Exceptional - Location Nothing
- Gina (4/5): - If you like old town western hotel with old rooms this is your place. We had the only room with a bathroom.
Staff were very nice . Check in at the bar. Had to give 20$ deposit for room key and when we went to check out no one around, so lost that.
Not for the faint of heart.
- John (1/5): Not worth money paid for - The staff was welcoming and polite Room was filthy no TV remote
- Carol (7/5): Good - Close to shops and not far from beautiful scenery.
The service is good. Renovations are underway, but it's going to look great when that's complete.
- Lance (4/5): No wonderful - The place in in the middle of a renovation and it will be nice when done. The bathrooms is quite lovely. It's finished. There was tea and coffee and a jug provided.... but... There is no powerpoint near the jug is on the dresser, you have to put the jug on the floor to boil it.
The water pressure in the bathroom and the sink in the room is poor
There is a remote, but its a remote to a AC which does not exist. There is a TV but no remote.
I had to give $20 as a key deposit. They knew I was leaving at 8am and said there would be someone there to give me my money back, there was no one. I have asked for it to be refunded. We will see.... A bit Fawlty Towers really.
- Casey (3/5): Food was yum.. Rooms were ok, won’t be coming back - The location
The restaurant food was amazing.. the staff were so beautiful!! Only one power plugs worked in the room..
The tv didn’t work, the heater didn’t work
One shower for 12 Rooms, the water was cold
Took hour and a half to check in..
- Mike (3/5): Dont need to go again - Didnt order breakfast
- Twister2 (5/5): Overnight - The building Bed sheets, hairs in and on bed ,not vacumed properly . Staff were friendly . Enjoyed the window.
- Nigel (4/5): All good except our accommodation - The Hotel and staff very uninviting room, linen, furniture, all past there used buy date, bed was creaking with any small move.
we expected an old premises, but our room looked like someone had just moved out 10 mins before we moved in.
Think the rental days may be over for this one after 100 plus years.
the Hotel itself was good we had been there before.
- Robyn (4/5): It's pretty cheap and grotty there - Minimal hot water, the place was being renovated with workmen outside the bedroom window at 7am Saturday morning...
- Janine (7/5): Comfortable Stay and affordable - Staff were friendly good location
- Teruia (7/5): Good - The staff was lovely and friendly from the moment we arrived and did explained that renovation was happening will look good once completed, walk into town, was very close to the venue where 60th birthday was located, just there for one night as it was convenient for mum and I Was never mentioned about $20 key deposit
Never mentioned about renovation until we checked in
The bedding needs updating looked old, worn
No one onsite to return key back to, to get your deposit back, or return key box, left key in room with a note, suggest leaving envelope for customer and a key drop off box maybe
- Naomi (6/5): Pleasant -
- Tim (8/5): - The area was awesome
- Sarah (8/5): Very good - Clean
- Quentin (9/5): Above and beyond expectations, amazing - The whole atmosphere of the Kentish was amazing and the staff were so accommodating to our needs thankyou so much we will be staying there again in the future Nothing it was great
- Canziani (5/5): We will come again regardless - Bad towels not cleaned enough . Pillow cases and duvets smell and beet sheet not really clean got e bad smell like
Washed with kalt water.sorry about that the rest was okay.
- Hester (5/5): Passable - Close to town No clean towels beds not made
- Lawrence (2/5): Tbh... - There were plenty of takeaways close by Pretty much the whole experience. At first I was told i had no booking despite showing the booking confirmation. I was charged $20 for the room key. The bedding left a LOT to be desired- tattered! The bar closed early, the kitchen even earlier so I had to go to a takeaways for dinner.
And with the smell of burning dust when I used the room heater I'm surprised it hasn't caused a fire yet. Not recommended
- Hester (7/5): Nexts time I’ll come back to stay - Close to town Need to have clean towels every day
- Kowhai (2/5): - Renovations were underway leaving hall and common areas dusty and unsafe with exposed wire being worked on, walls knocked out and painting being done during the time of our stay. There were two shared showers for the hotel. One had no hot water and the other only barely hot enough after being left running for a long amount of time.
Noise from the venue below was understandable but still not ideal.
Light fittings in the room were not fully functional, carpet was stained and bed squeaky and old. Other than a hook on the back of the door there was nowhere to actually hang clothes. The jug could only be plugged in by leaving it sitting on the floor.
My partner has allergies and was unwell, we tried to make the best of it but ended up leaving without staying the night.
This was backpacker style accommodation at $128 for a Queen which is not worth it.
When I raised these issues with staff (we left without staying the night) a refund was not forthcoming even though all of the issues can be easily verified.
With renovations I am sure this place has potential but this is not how you treat paying customers.
- Kelvin (8/5): Very good - It's a great hotel with a lot of history. Having to leave the room to use the bathroom.
- Andrea (4/5): Disappointed re water and bed linen. - Location and friendly staff.
Great meal in restaurant. Bed linen needed changing and once I asked it was done.
No hot water in shower in morning despite running the tap for 10 mins.
Cleaners noisy in early morning.
Room was above bar so band was loud in the room however that was our choice to stay when a band was on.
- Donna (7/5): Good - Cosy and cost Not great at using stairs
- Tilly (7/5): Overnight stay okay - Okay for the price paid Lighting deem
- Ken (2/5): Terrible facilities but it gave us a place to stay in Waiuku whilst attending a tangi - The location and friendly staff Everything sadly.
The bedrooms and hallway smelled stale.
Sheets did not smell clean.
No extra toilet roll in toilets.
One pillow had blood stains on it.
Towels were hard.
Showers were cold or extremely hot.
Kitchen was a mess.
Cups were unclean.
Just really bad and unclean facilities all round.
Would recommend if single and need a place to lay your head overnight but overall not good.
Would not recommend for family.
- Jonziboy (5/5): Passable -
- David (4/5): Because of the key deposit refund issue in particular, will not stay there again - Friendly staff and easy check in Showers had no hot water. Despite assuring me my key deposit would be refunded into my account on Monday and providing them details, still have not seen it. This includes ringing to chase it up and being promised again it would be transferred through that day. Not so worried about the $20, but the principle behind it annoys me.
- Mj (4/5): up grade the rooms & showers - the heater shower pressure was terrible
bed lining needs to be cleaned
rooms had a old musky dusty smell & feel
- Noel (7/5): Good -
- cappy (8/5): - The bed linen bottom bed sheet was unclean. Noisy when the disco is pumping and noisy bar patrons at midnight-1300.
- Levi (7/5): Good -
- Grant (5/5): Passable - Close to town Had a cold shower rooms needed a good clean proper clean
- Mary (7/5): Good -
- Lonny (7/5): Good -
- Alena (5/5): Passable - Very basic accommodation...it was as tidy as it could be for a building of this age. Bathroom and showers shared, which is fine, but they really need renovated. Very basic bed...not comfortable!
- Kerry (1/5): Bad - Good location but facility was a bit run down Some staff are very rude a male bar staff & luck of communication between recipients & other staff
- Janine (5/5): Passable -
- Grant (4/5): Up ndown - Freedom to come and go when needed Sheets were dirty had seamen on sheets the place needed a vacumn toilets were in need of repair had cold showers no pillow cases first night got no sleep someone was moving beer crates at 4 in the morning
- Lisa (1/5): Horrible - Location good. We didn’t have breakfast. Everything! Peeling paint on ceiling. Off milk. Stained carpet. 1 toilet out of order. Showers very average.
- Vyv (8/5): - Basic.. wouldn't take my wife.
- Terry (5/5): Passable -
- Ann (5/5): Ok but be prepared - The staff were lovely
Handy for drinks and a meal
Right in the Main Street Well know it’s old but for the money it was not great the shared bathroom was literally a shower in the wall we were lucky enough to have a toilet and sink in our (tiny) room But it was next to the shared toilets which people sadly don’t give a rats how noisy they are or what time it is
There was no hairdryer and beware if the $20 deposit for the key if you don’t come from New Zealand they can’t put the money back into your account (if you pay cash) unless you have a New Zealand bank account !
- Richard (7/5): Stay in an old county pud at least once in your life, they are old beautiful and need to be treasurd - Go stay at the old pubs, it’s the experience that makes it! It is what it is but you get to have a moment it time, my partner and I and our 5 month old loved it. Fans in the room, so hot in January but the veranda was a saving grace.
- Linda (7/5): Convenient place for my needs, easy parking and plenty of it, nice bed. - I didn't eat there, so don't know about the meals. Short staffed on my arrival so hung around a bit. Could have been a light over the second bed.
- Jane (3/5): Won’t be going back - Location - we were attending a wedding 8 kms away Room had no ventilation 7 was very hot. There was only 1 electric plug so had to choose between charging phone or plugging in fan. Was given a multi-plug but it didn’t work. Only 1 toilet available - floor was filthy. Did not have a shower as the 2 showers looked awful.
Crazy rigmarole booking in - paying $20 for room key, which was taken out of the till and stapled to a receipt - you were expected to retrieve it when you checked out but a friend in another room couldn’t find a staff member to retrieve the money when she left so she left the key in the door of the room and left without her $20. Appreciate that it is a heritage building but things could have improved markedly at very little cost.
Room was noisy & hot - no sleep!
- Loren (1/5): No aircon, uncomfortable and dirty bed, overpriced for what you g - The location Shared shower
- Marvic (1/5): Bad -
- Lila (10/5): Better than good - Everything. The room was clean. Bed was comfortable. The food was tasty. Service was exceptional. There wasn't anything not to like.
- Hannes (3/5): Friendly people, Lovely old building but will never stay there again. - Location The bed was possibly the worse bed I gave ever slept in. Mattress was absolutely rubbish. Possibly 50 years old.
- Tatjana (2/5): - Disappointing stay at the Kentish, staff were unfriendly, room was hot and stuffy and shared facilities were dirty, with a cockroach greeting us on arrival. Broken toilet, no toilet paper or new towels after staying for three days. Wouldn’t recommend.
- Julie (8/5): served ita purpose - location all good
- Ashley (1/5): Horrible and couldn’t sleep - Nothing it was so out dated and dirty Everything
- Sylvia (6/5): Fun experience. We: 2 x 70+ year olds went down to bar to play card games and enjoyed friendly scene - An old hotel with bar and Friday night jazz group, adequate for what we needed, better than I expected. Shared toilet old but OK. automatic lights came on at night. Good atmosphere in bar. helpful staff ensuite in room
- Craig (2/5): Very poor -
- Victor (10/5): Very pleasant staff very quite place cool place that is new for me that why I'm exited to stay in - I like the place because near in my school Get my license
- Murphy (10/5): Exceptional - Great staff. Very cozy
