Guest Reviews
- Katharina (10/5): -
- Lance (10/5): Super comfortable and clean resort style accommodations. The hosts were very friendly and flexible. - The facilities and the grounds are amazing. The main house (common area) has everything you need for cooking and even light entertaining. The guest rooms were spacious and made for a very comfortable 5-day stay. It's about a 20 minute drive to Hilo and a gas station so you need to be prepared to take care of several errands if you head into town.
- Carla (8/5): Nice place, great view, very relaxing. Too many cats for us personally - The property was great and very spacious. It's a plantation with many orchards and a great view into the backyard on to the ocean. It's definitely worth knowing that there are A LOT of cats - especially for those who don't like cats or are allergic to them. For us this would be the only reason why we wouldn't recommend this place unconditionally to other people - unless you're a BIG cat lover. (around 5 cats who hang out by the apartments permanently, also come to the "private" terrace. even more cats, around 20 I think at the host's place)
- Steve (10/5): -
- Shuhong (10/5): -
- Agustin (10/5): Excelente alojamiento!!!
- Richard (10/5): -
- Bernadine (10/5): I want it to be just my secret hideaway, but it won't stay secret for long! - Peaceful, uninterrupted bliss. We were made to feel like the cabin was all ours and every accommodation and provision far surpassed our expectation! Anyone would be hard pressed to find a better country estate for a retreat! A very small section of country road leading to hotel (not owned by property) is unpaved, a wee bit rocky, but not significant enough to turn back.
- Sylvie (7/5): -
- Kathleen (9/5): It was spacious, peaceful and restful. - Lovely location and very peaceful. Caught some stunning sunrises.

- David (10/5): Excellent experience on every level. - Beautiful location. Quiet, calming, so peaceful. Easy to get to, with easy access to Hilo and other points of interest. Rooms were clean and updated and comfortable. Appreciated the great range of facilities, including a shared lounge area and kitchen, as well as laundry room and free parking steps away from rooms. Beautiful grounds and landscaping. Excellent communication and clear instructions every step of the process with Randy, from confirming the reservation to warm welcome upon arrival. Great value for the great experience.
- Yuanyi (10/5): -
- Riley (10/5): Beauty, comfort, cats! - Mahana House was our favorite place we have ever stayed! Everything in our room was high quality, thoughtful, and fully stocked. The views from the lanai were breathtaking, and we loved hanging out in the mornings outside with the kitties. We wish we could stay here forever!
- Debra (10/5): - 5 star accommodations
Tranquil location
- Clara (10/5): C’était parfait ! - La beauté des lieux, le parc, la vue, l’agencement de la chambre et le confort…et l’accueil par les chats !
- Florian (10/5): The perfect stay on the big island - - beautiful location, up on the hill with a view of the ocean from the balcony and relatively short drive into town and other attractions
- large room, exceptionally clean, very beautifully decorated and put together with everything needed either in the room or the large common kitchen (e.g. they even had an aircryer)
- very friendly and helpful owners, even gave us a ride home not town when our car broke down - no complaint as this is known, but there is no air condition in the rooms. It’s cold enough at night but just something to be aware off
- Shawn (9/5): -
- Courtney (9/5): Beautiful accomodations and views. -
- Jack (10/5): Lovely place - Lovely and quiet Mentions about stove/ cooking facilities in the cottage but there wasn’t
- Ralph (10/5): - Das grosse Zimmer mit Veranda, die Lage in der Natur und die Ruhe. Nichts
- Brett (10/5): Beautiful gem - The property is peaceful and beautiful, on lush grassy slopes overlooking the ocean, surrounded by orchards of tropical fruit trees. Randy is a wonderful and considerate host, always ready to give helpful info on the area, or to let you enjoy your privacy as you prefer. For cat lovers, there is a charming group of friendly felines on the farm property. Highly recommend it— the best place we’ve stayed anywhere in Hawaii! 🌴 🌈 🌊 ⛰️
- Ruoxi (10/5): - Great view and very clean. Has everything we needed from the kitchen (we cooked noodles for breakfast in the communal one!) to the laundry room. The cats there are also extremely lovely and friendly
- Carlotta (10/5): -
- Qifan (10/5): -
- Paul (10/5): The best - Absolutely superb. Randy thought of everything to make this a quiet, friendly, comfortable place to stay. A quiet retreat. It put a dent in our tourist activities, though, because we didn’t want to leave! It’s good to do some grocery shopping before you get there, as there are minimal food options in the immediate area.
- Bruno (10/5): - Nice place to stay. Highly recommended
- DIANA (10/5): -
- Shiny (10/5): - Very nice area
- Davide (10/5): Exceptional - Mahana Country Inn was an incredible stay for us. It is such a beautiful location in a quiet area away just north of Hilo. It is perfect to explore the entire eastern side of the Island. Would definitely recommend it.
- Michael (10/5): - Gorgeous setting. Peaceful and amazing views.
- Daniel (10/5): - I like the property itself, it’s a small place a bit out of the beaten path but the room is pretty much an apartment and as there are only few rooms and a common area, feels ideal for 2 or 3 couples traveling together.
Just be aware it’s a bit far from town
- Michael (10/5): Nice stay in the country - Exactly what I was looking for.
- Zheng (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pei-chun (10/5): A peaceful and unforgettable stay in a beautifully maintained cottage — truly a hidden gem in Hilo! - We stayed at Mahana House for two nights and absolutely loved it. The cottage was beautiful and incredibly comfortable — the bed even had adjustable firmness settings! The kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed, and there was a laundry room where we could wash and dry our clothes for free.
The cat was adorable, and for the first time, my husband changed his opinion about cats — he actually liked this one! Randy takes great care of the orchard, and the longans were delicious. We truly appreciated the peaceful surroundings — it was perfect for mindfulness and relaxation.
We shared photos on Instagram, and so many of our friends are now planning to visit too! It’s about a 15-minute drive from Hilo town, so having a car is necessary — but totally worth it. This place is truly a dream stay. Highly recommended! No~every thing is great
- Usha (10/5): - The location of the property was excellent. Host Randy snowed great hospitality and is super helpful. View of the ocean and the peaceful environment it offered provided much more relaxing atmosphere. I would recommend this place to others.
- Michael (10/5): - One of the nicest places we’ve ever stayed in! 10/10! The cottages are amazing, fresh eggs in the morning, fresh fruit on the trees, frogs chirping, a view of the ocean. Stunning. And Randy is the ultimate host, there to answer questions, share stories, and make you feel like you never want to leave! There were even fresh cookies one night in the kitchen for the guests. It’s like the best of staying at an air bnb, in a cottage, with people from all over, and a view that is breathtaking. We are DEFINITELY coming back!
- Bonnie (7/5): Overall it was super good. - Cats!!! They are so adorable and friendly.
Randy was super nice. He gave us many suggestions before we got Hilo. Super detailed. The bedding could be better.
- Janet (10/5): Our stay was relaxing, comfortable and enjoyable! - We loved our stay at Mahana House Country Inn. We stayed in an Ocean view King cottage and it was lovely, clean and comfortable. We loved being in rural Hawaii and the view from the lanai is beautiful. We enjoyed eating our breakfast or having a coffee out on the lanai and listening to the birds! I was concerned about no air conditioning, but it was never an issue. Lots of windows to open to let the breeze through and a big fan helps keep things cool at night. There is always a supply of farm eggs to cook up at the main house and usually some fruit that you can have. We had longan and little bananas and both were delicious! There's also some very friendly cats that like to greet you in the morning, they don't go inside and cannot get onto the lanai. The Coqui frogs can get loud at night. Also, it would have been nice to have our own cooktop, but I understand that cooking in the rooms could make the rooms smelly and more dirty. There is a fully equipped kitchen in the main house and it has so many supplies, so we used that if we had to cook anything on a stove. Some people wouldn't want to be 20 minutes outside of Hilo.
- Paul (9/5): relaxing - lots of space; laid back; country feel;
- Haonan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mariona (9/5): Superb -
- Luis n (10/5): - It was an amazing place with beautiful scenery! The cats were a charm! One of the best places I’ve stayed in!
- ABINDER (10/5): - Being able to live in this orchard like setting was very enjoyable. The hosts were happy bringing fresh fruits for everyone. We enjoyed unlimited supply of lychees, limes etc.
- Verified traveler (10/5): You can stop looking - You can stop looking. Checks all the boxes.
- Mary (10/5): Luxury and beauty meets function. - I stayed in one of the cottages which are new, beautifully decorated, super functional and so ver comfortable. The king size Sleep Number bed was over the top luxurious! Met owner Randy who took us on a tour of the gorgeous property and enjoyed tasting the fruits from the plantation. Loved that they have several rescued cats on property. The cats are very polite. The mini kitchen in the cottage was perfect for breakfast or lunch.
- Yejun (10/5): Exceptional -
- Erin (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful peaceful stay! Communal kitchen was very well stocked. We
- Dave (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cheryl (10/5): - Nice little hotel
- Patti (10/5): - This was a great rental with a beautiful common kitchen area and laundry. We were very pleased with our stay. We met Randy and Val and both were very helpful and nice. Thank you Mahana House!
- Irwin (10/5): - Enjoyed our stay at Mahana. Located about 15 min from Hilo. Quite country feel. Great common area with full kitchen and living room. If allergic to cats or need AC this place isn't for you.
- Shelley (9/5): Exceptional property - But, not all rooms have an ocean view - Mahana House lives up to the glowing reviews. From the moment we arrived, it felt like staying in a stylish, upscale VRBO. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and well-furnished, and having access to the large and well furnished common room and fully-equipped kitchen (with free farm fresh eggs!) made it feel like we had a whole house. The entire property was spotless and very well-maintained, with thoughtful touches throughout that added to the overall welcoming atmosphere. You can tell the owners really care about every detail. The location was ideal, offering easy access to the East shores of Hawaii, making it the perfect base for exploring. This place truly stands out—if you’re looking for a quiet, beautiful spot with all the amenities, Mahana House is a gem. The only disappointment during our stay was the lack of an ocean view. As shown in the attached photo from our lanai, the palm trees in front of the main house have grown significantly taller since the website photo was taken, blocking most of the ocean view. From the room we occupied (in the main building), only a small sliver of ocean is visible over the tops of a few trees, where the tree line dips down. Given this, it would be more accurate to label this room as having a 'garden view.' This was especially disappointing, as an ocean view was one of our top priorities when searching for accommodations, and the website photo made it look so inviting. While it didn’t meet our expectations in that regard, the property itself is truly special, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I also believe the ocean view is likely much better from their cottages.
- Clarisse (10/5): - We had a great stay at Mahana House. Beautiful property and we enjoyed the company of friendly felines!
- John (9/5): Country Oasis - Quiet country setting. 7 rooms total. 20 minutes North of Hilo. Great patio. Large rooms with kitchenette. If you want to cook there is a communal kitchen and great room with laundry attached. Owners live on site should you need anything. Friendly cats will come visit (outdoors only!) if you're into that. A great place. Highly recommend. Nothing...
- Grace (10/5): - This B&B felt like a boutique hotel with 23 acre of lawn, longan trees, palms and over 40 cats (and we loved them). You’re not living in the same house with your host, and each room is spacious and separate from each other. The kitchen is clean and spacious too. I think there are seven rooms/cottages, but we rarely came across other guests in the kitchen dining area or patio when cooking breakfast or dinner or eating meals. We love this place and will go back!
- Jian (10/5): best experience - best experience, for the location, the view, the friendly and informative host.
- Peter (10/5): Relaxing. I will return - Good vibe
Beautiful location They should turn off the rear outside lights so that stargazing would be better, it was still amazing.
First world problem
- Tim (10/5): - The only negative I can think of is you have to wait a few minutes for hot water in the shower but that is pretty normal. Everything is so nice - we had a sleep comfort bed adjustable both sides and there is a wonderful common area for kitchen and washer/dryer. We used the beach chairs and cooler with ice packs for our trip to the beach. Randy is an amazing excellent host. Cats were fun to be around and they hang around looking for any affection you can offer. Would stay again for sure
- Dorothy (10/5): - This is a wonderful property with great hosts.
- ben (10/5): - Don’t miss it. We travel frequently and this is a rare, unique spot. The website description accurately matches what you’ll find.
- Darren (10/5): Exceptional -
- charles (10/5): - Nicely appointed unit in a quiet ocean and Mountain View country setting.
Reasonable price considering the quality of the unit.
14 miles to Kona for good restaurants, a free zoo and botanical gardens as well as waterfalls and other nature attractions.
Nice 50 mile day trip to the Volcano national park.
Highly recommend this country inn!
- Robert (10/5): We enjoyed the location, the service and the excellent accommodation. - Beautiful, quiet location.
- Xinyao (9/5): Superb - The room soundproofing is not good
- Qing Ying (10/5): - It is in a quiet and convenient location. Close to Akaka falls, with a beautiful view.
- Jamez (10/5): - Excellent location with no traffic plus relaxing views and ambience. Well maintained and equipped. Farm-like setting. Self-catering. Good and helpful management.
- Jayant (10/5): - Excellent overall! Great comfort and location.
- Lia (10/5): - great, clean room
- Zheng (10/5): - Great!
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Ke (9/5): Superb -
- Wanjia (10/5): - Very unique and unforgettable living experience! Large room, clean, quiet, beautiful views! Would definitely live again next time we come to the big island.
- Conrad (10/5): - Planning to return
- Janelle (10/5): - We absolutely loved our time here and could have easily spent another week in our cottage. The buildings are well organized and beautifully furnished. It was quiet, peaceful, and very restful place to unwind! And, we savoured fresh fruit from the orchard.
- Philip (10/5): Beautiful setting and cosy atmosphere! - Excellent hospitality! Thanks again.
- Andrew (10/5): - Cannot overstate how much we enjoyed our stay at this property. Well above expectations! Owner was very communicative and property was immaculate.
- Haodong (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barbara (10/5): - What a great place to relax in the country! Our cottage was spacious, beautifully decorated and comfortable. The view was gorgeous. Highly recommended!
- Tammera J (10/5): - Nice retreat off the beaten path with many personal touches and attention to detail
- sebastien (10/5): - It’s an amazing place, it has everything you can expect and a view on the ocean.
The room is large and well furnished. The location is great because not that far from Hilo and to visit the main attractions (hakalaka falls, rainbow falls, volcanoes NP…).
The only issue was the noise from the frogs during the night, it seems it was the mating season.
- Amyjc15 (10/5): Relaxing stay - It was such a relaxing place, I honestly can't recall when I've slept better. Really beautiful views, quiet and calm. The cats were very cute. One of the staff baked some banana bread for the guests which was such a nice touch. Don't trust google maps to get you there- follow the instructions sent to you or the signs on the roads!
- Mie (10/5): - Super nice place with beautiful view! Room condition was also excellent. I had a great time with cute cats there. Hopefully, I will stay there longer next time!
- Hongyi (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay at Mahana House Country Inn! It’s a cozy and quiet place with beautiful scenery, perfect for a relaxing getaway. The inn has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and we especially loved how cat-friendly it is. The adorable cats added a special charm to our stay. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful and comfortable retreat!
- Xiaowen (10/5): - The room was nestled in the rainforest, offering a beautiful environment. A group of friendly cats greeted us at the entrance. The kitchen was well-equipped, and there was also a laundry room. At night, we could hear the calls of coqui frogs outside the window, making us feel very close to nature. The location was very close to Akaka State Park, making it easy to visit the waterfalls. We truly wish we could have stayed a few more days.
- HAI (10/5): - Nice staying, very friendly owners and cute cats
- Jing (10/5): - I recently had a fantastic stay at this hotel and wanted to highlight one of the most memorable aspects: the adorable cats! Staying here with these charming feline companions was truly a unique and enjoyable experience. The hotel itself was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, with thoughtful details that made my stay pleasant. The host Randy were incredibly warm and welcoming, ensuring that I felt right at home. If you’re a cat lover or simply looking for a cozy and hospitable place to stay, I highly recommend this hotel. Thank you for making my stay so special!
ps: My husband is allergic to cat hair, so I was quite concerned about his allergies before our stay. We even brought allergy medication with us. However, in reality, the room, including the bedding and towels, was very clean. My husband experienced no discomfort during our stay and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
- Ben (9/5): Superb -
- Kirk (2/5): - CATS, CATS & MORE CATS. Counted at least seven and likely more. If you are allergic to cats you will suffer as other guests are letting them in the rooms. They are everywhere, large (>20 pounds) and very aggressive. They jump on your lap if you are in the outdoor recliner and if you open a plastic bag they rush you expecting a treat. Had to sleep in the car the second night due to allergies.
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cathy (8/5): Great - Beautiful and many added thoughtful items Frogs mating call at night
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional -
- feliberto (10/5): - It was very enjoyable.
- Mavis (10/5): - great place to stay
- Jieting (10/5): - Awesome place to stay. Will definitely come back again if back in Hilo.
- Tongpeng (10/5): - Cottage C was truly enjoyable. The place was perfect, and we appreciated all the thoughtful touches. We hope to stay with you again in the future!
- Evelina (10/5): - A great place to purity your body, speech and mind. Very thoughtful hosts, get fresh farm eggs in the morning. Absolutely the best of the best to stay.
- Peggy (10/5): - Beautiful property, real Hawaiian experience. If you’re looking for a retreat, close to many adventures yet tucked away in a lush and quiet surrounding this is what your looking for.
- Beth (10/5): - Don't like the additional property fee. Just give room price before tax
