- Johanna (10/5): Plantation luxury - Excellent service. Rooms comfortable and well appointed Nothing
- James (8/5): Very good - Meals could not be faulted for choice or quality. Excellent location and great swimming pool.
- Graeme (9/5): Like stepping back in time with colonial era experience .Relaxing way to end an amazing holiday in Sri Lanka - Beautiful colonial era large bungalow situated within beautiful gardens on 50 acre property where all vegetables and rice consumed by guests is grown organically. We had a beautiful dinner and breakfast . We were the only ones staying in 7 bedroom property . Nothing
- Jo (10/5): Fabulous stay. Highly recommend - Fantastic food and fantastic service
- Megan (2/5): Very poor - The estate was beautiful, the staff were incredibly hospitable and the food - wow. The two nights we spent at Horathapola Estate were the perfect end to our Sri Lanka trip. WiFi was a little weak but made for the perfect excuse to stay off devices and live in the moment.
- Louise (9/5): A Charming and authentic period plantation estate stay - We had a lovely 2 night stay at Horathapola. It it is an authentic colonial property set in beautiful surroundings. The staff were absolutely exceptional and did everything possible to make our visit as happy and comfortable as possible. One interesting feature Mo to note is that there are no locks on the bedroom doors so you feel as though you are staying in a private home, rather than a hotel which was novel but rather nice (there was however it should be noted a lockable safe in our bathroom for the storage of valuables.
We really did enjoy our visit and, would definitely recommend a visit here with a few provisos which I’ll outline below. It is particularly to be recommended and suitable at the start or end of your Sri Lankan holiday (or both) as it’s a perfect place to chill out and within easy reach of Colombo airport (about an hour’s drive away) The house really is very beautiful, with all the common areas beautifully furnished with well chosen gorgeous period pieces of furniture and very stylish soft furnishings, cushions etc but despite its charms if I’m honest I do think the hotel is overpriced for what is on offer. I think it was expensive and I would expect some things to be better for the money.
Whilst the bedrooms are very spacious and the bed was very comfortable, they aren’t furnished for practicality and storage for clothes was basic. Our bathroom really did leave a lot to be desired as it had very poor lighting making it very difficult to apply make up in the evening after the sun had left the room and for a person who wears contact lenses it was nigh on impossible as I
literally couldn’t see to get them
In or out. These days good lighting is really expected particularly in an expensive hotel.
I would also say it’s worth mentioning that this is not the place for activities of any kind and there really is nothing to do at all apart from sit and relax on a sun lounger or swim in the (very lovely) pool. But having said that for a couple of days it’s a wonderful place to really unwind and relax.
Thank You so much for a lovely stay.
- Bella (10/5): Exceptional - beautiful setting, stylishly decorated with wonderful staff. the food was the best we had in Sri Lanka and it was in the most beautiful area. nothing! the fact I didn’t want to leave
