Guest Reviews
- Brenda (7/5): -
- Simon (5/5): Very average - Not much. The shower was ok and the towels/bedding appeared clean. Grubby decor, gone off and limited milk/drink sachet selection, no bathroom sink mirror light.
- Denise (8/5): -
- Michael (8/5): - Easy walk from both station and town centre. Friendly staff serving a decent breakfast. Bed comfortable and shower good. Classic rooms above a pub, not really a hotel. Decor getting a bit tired, small tear in net curtain and carpet. Live music in bar on Saturday night was very loud in the room, it stopped before I went to bed but worth checking when if you want a quiet evening in your room.
- John (7/5): - Room size was excellent, shower was good. There was a buzzing sound all night which I could not find the source of in the room
- Anne-Marie (8/5): My four night stay exceeded my expectations with the whole team making me feel very welcome. - The Bushell is located near to both rail and bus stations. My room was very comfortable with all the facilities I required and the choice of breakfast menu was superb. I have absolutely no complaints
- Lucy (9/5): Great stay albeit too short, great location near to town, shops, theatre and had a car park to use - Great location, that's why I chose it,great price and had parking Not really anything I did not like
- Richard (10/5): - Everything It was all good and very central to town
- Christopher (8/5): - Location and near to bus station. Not noisy at night. O
- Aeron (8/5): top location in town, ideal for a weekday stay - great bit of dinner, very good breakfast.
- Kirkland (8/5): Very enjoyable and a great location - Very friendly and helpful Not so great if you’ve not got great mobility, lot of steps and the stairs are very narrow and steep
- Vanessa (7/5): Relevant hotel - The bed was comfortable, I slept very well! My boyfriend slept well, but he was woken up during the night by a guest who was next door. The hotel walls are quite thin, which caused him to wake up to the guest talking. Another bad thing was that the next day we went to have breakfast. Of course, it was 10:30 in the morning, but the attendant told us to look at the menu and choose what we wanted. But when we went to order the food, they said they couldn't, that breakfast wasn't available. We were a little confused, since he told us to look at the menu and choose what we wanted.
Another equally important detail is that the television in the room is not a Smart TV, so we practically couldn't watch what we wanted.
The room could also be better ventilated. It had a slight (damp, closed) smell.

- Enid (10/5): Great place for a stay in Bury. it's a lovely town with lots of shops and a great food market. - excellent location in St Johns street where there are lots of lovely independent shops. car park a real bonus. Massive walk-in shower Really helpful staff. Good breakfast lots of steps in the pub--but it is old. Stairs to room a bit of a challenge. there are ground floor rooms (didn't know that) or I would have booked it
- andrew (6/5): - Breakfast cofee was cool and week
- Helen (4/5): Disappointing and probably will avoid Greene King inns in future. - The receptionist who greeted us was excellent - polite, cheerful and very helpful.
We also liked the proximity to the town centre. The breakfast arrangements - the request form was not really fit for purpose so difficult to be sure and clear what you were ordering. Disorganised in terms of not having juice glasses, cereal bowls, etc on hand without asking. Difficult arrangement for making tea. Staff less cheerful and helpful than receptionist. - almost surly.
Requested rooms close together - couldn't have been further apart.
First come, first served car parking places not made clear on initial booking.
- Neil (9/5): -
- Vivienne (8/5): Suited our needs - Location Small room
- Sophie (8/5): -
- Theresa (8/5): Good location. Friendly, welcoming staff. But a few things need tweaking to make it excellent - Newly refurbished and room was lovely. Very welcoming staff. Tv said ‘no signal’. Staff the next morning suggested it might be a loose connection. Breakfast was rather underwhelming.
- Linda (8/5): Nice clean comfortable room, - Nice and friendly and helpful Windows are in need of repair
- Brid (10/5): - Absolutely 💯 Everything
The Manager Steve, is extremely good at his job and very hands on in all areas of running his Business and in return, he has an Amazing team who work so well together and ensuring all the guests feel welcome and have everything they need to make your stay as comfortable as possible. NOTHING!
- Jennifer (7/5): Best part of the Bushel is the location and the staff. - Staff friendly room clean on arrival location was excellent Room not cleaned the following day. noise level from the room next door was unbearable I felt they were in my room. On speaking to the receptionist she informed me there had been other complaints regarding the noise.
- Frances (9/5): Comfortable & welcoming. - Breakfast very good. Ground coffee would been preferable. Young man took our cases upstairs for us which was so helpful - please thank him. All the staff went out of their way to be friendly. No saucers for cups in bedroom or biscuits!

- Guest (8/5): -
- Calvin (8/5): Very nice very friendly and helpful staff - Good location The cleaning was not complete
- Flanagan (9/5): -
- peter (9/5): - Central location, staff very friendly and very helpful. Nothing.
- Jean (9/5): Enjoyable overnight in Bury St Edmund’s . - So near to the town centre. Nothing
- Nigel (8/5): Good value in the best town centre in Suffolk. Great pub, comfortable rooms, clean, quiet, car park - Its a very old building right in the town centre. Surprisingly it was quiet and peaceful on our weekday night stay. The room was smallish, but comfortable. The bathroom spacious but lighting a bit dim. The car park at the rear a real bonus in a busy town centre. Breakfast big on quantity, Ok on quality but the fried eggs were broken and cooked solid making for the only disappointment in an otherwise very pleasant stay Just the fried eggs at Breakfast. Yolks broken then overcooked to become solid and rubbery. Everything else for breakfast was fine. They even made us a fresh pot of proper tea and provided a top up.
- Kevin (6/5): - Position. Size of room. Good shower. 8 changes of floor level from room to breakfast area.
Continental breakfast provided toast and jam, a few pastries, couple of croissants ... no mixed fruit, very basic potted fruit yogurt instead of a quality one, no ham or cheese selection, nor different breads. No muesli choice bar porridge oats.
- Kenny (9/5): -
- Parkinson (9/5): - Lovely stay Nothing
- Ma Donna (9/5): -
- Per (8/5): -
- TTAJF (8/5): - Central town location with a carpark
- Pardeep (9/5): A great escape! - Great location, Cody rooms and wonderful staff. I think the coffee could be better but that's an unfair statement as I am a coffee snob.
- Chris (10/5): - Fantastic stay very friendly professional staff will certainly be booking again.
- Flanagan (7/5): -
- Emma (9/5): -
- geoffrey (9/5): Very comfortable stay,.will recommend this hotel - Excellent breakfast, lots of choice,....perfect location, car park, very friendly helpful staff All good
- Gary (9/5): - Nice room Only here one night.
- Ruth (9/5): Great location - Great location - within 5 minute walk to all points of interest including cathedral, Abbey ruins & shops. Helpful, friendly staff. Good pub grub & comfortable room. Parking at pub car park is a bonus.
- Deb (8/5): Great for a one night visit to Bury St Edmunds - All the staff we met were lovely - helpful, friendly, professional
Excellent breakfast which was also very reasonable priced
Very handy for the music venue we were going to Parking is very limited - and we didn't get a parking spot
Our room was quite small (we did find out that it is the smallest room and we were allocated it because I booked for one rather than two - so my error)
- Cornwall (9/5): Homely stay - freondly staff - The staff were ectremely helpful...even set my phone up for me to reach an unknown destination on foot
Food was pretty good
Could open window ....a must for me Parking was full but not a huge issue as we magaed to park outside the front.
- Raymond (8/5): Very convenient and just right for a one night stay - Very conveniently situated for exploring on foot
Stayed in the cottage type annex which was ideal away from bar noise
- Richard (10/5): Comfortable warm and friendly - Proximity and location outside pub Bit old
- John (8/5): 1 Night stop-over - Staff engagement Detail about how to find car park would have been useful, stairs to the room were tight/steep for persons with walking difficulties
- dalessandro (8/5): -
- Jason (10/5): Really enjoyed my stay - Very clean room and ample breakfast, good parking , very handy for town An extra light over mirror in bathroom would be better for shaving , as it stands it is too dark to see to shave properly
- James (7/5): -
- Robert (9/5): -
- Karen (8/5): Ideal for a short stay in Bury St Edmunds with excellent food. - The location of the hotel was fantastic for our trip to The Apex Theatre, lots of shops near by too.
Breakfast was amazing! I had the English Breakfast, it was huge! It was freshly cooked and tasted wonderful. My husband had the Eggs Benedict and said that his too was very good.
We were both very impressed with the quality of the food.
The room was a good size with cupboard space, beautiful bathroom and nice bedding. Although the room was comfortable and perfect for our 1 night stay, it's looking slightly tired. The carpet and curtains could do with replacing. Also a plug socket next to the bed side lamp would be useful on each side.
- Janice (8/5): Would defo stay here again very comfortable and close to bury centre for shopping and shows - Room was very comfortable and clean
Pub was great excellent food evening meal and breakfast 10/10 Hallway and landing needs some attention a bit off putting when you go to the rooms
- Graham (8/5): We enjoyed our stay tremendously. - Breakfast was fair. Location excellent The stairway to the rooms were awkward to negotiate with baggage.
- 1979dtp (7/5): The Bushell - Good location and a nice breakfast. The shower head wasn't secured to the pipework, so it kept falling off when using it. The ceiling was also quite low in the bathroom, so you also had to duck a little to use the shower.
- Gill (10/5): -
- Lynne (10/5): A pleasure to stay in probably the friendliest town in the UK! - Great location; very helpful and friendly staff; great food, too. N/A
- Mervyn (9/5): Overall, lovely time - Very good. Plug in the sink leak.
- Beverley (9/5): -
- alex (4/5): A bit disappointing - Breakfast was poor
- Chris (10/5): brilliant - Great location, really worked for us, very pleased with everything Can't think of anything, maybe power sockets near the bed, but didn't spoil anything
- Joe (10/5): If we are to return to area ,this would be first choice of accommodation - breakfast was very good,. room very warm and clean .location was in easy reach to where we needed
Lisa and staff very welcoming and went above expectation
- Nigel (9/5): One night stay. - Located a five minute walk from the town centre, a quiet friendly pub. The room was a good size and quiet and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was very good. Would definitely look to book again when we go back to Bury St Edmunds. Everything was fine.
- Edmond (8/5): Prima plek in centrum. Van alle gemakken voorzien. .. - Sfeervol, oud gebouw maar in goede staat. Alles modern en comfortabel. Wc spoelde langzaam door
- Louise (8/5): Great - Great location and no late night noise. Comfy bed. Basic
- Quenton (10/5): -
- Yvonne (9/5): -
- Terry (10/5): enjoyable - friendliness of all staff nothing
- darren (10/5): Would highly recommend. - The very warm welcome. Food was lovely too, the room was comfortable, warm and everything we needed was there.
We will be back. Unfortunately the gentleman next to us kept his TV on all throughout the night on both nights. He didn't sound like he was a particularly well man so we didn't feel like it was fair to ask him to turn the volume down/off.
Not a reflection at all on the Bushel, its not something they could control.
- Jane (5/5): -
- Julian (7/5): Comfortable & Welcoming - This is a characterful old pub with welcoming staff, a car park, and within close walking distance of the centre of town.
Our room was clean, quiet and warm, the bed was comfortable and the shower was good.
We enjoyed drinks in the bar and a good Full English breakfast (which was excellent value). Our room was on the first floor of the main building, the decor of which is rather tired throughout.
- Jane (9/5): 48 Hours In Bury St Edmunds. - Location, warm welcome, hospitality, food. Also we could leave rucksacks prior to check in to be able to enjoy Bury St Edmunds . Nothing noted.
- ernie (10/5): Always a great experience, staff friendly, rooms always great - Everything Nothing
- Scotton (10/5): We enjoyed it enough to make it our 'go to' place to stay when we visit Bury St Edmunds. - Steve and his team were all very cheery and polite. We were quite late for breakfasts, but we did not feel rushed. All our questions were answered ie directions to...... places to eat etc. (We did have 2 meals at the Bushell). The cleaner even furnished us with an umbrella as the weather was very inclement! Everyone seemed to be genuinly interrested in our enjoyment of our stsy. The weather!
- Peter (3/5): Awful - The location was good The property was dirty smelly needs work doing to tidy up was basically in the car park noises from early hours
Kitchen staff smoking in doorway of kitchen
- Martin (7/5): -
- Gary (9/5): Great location. Welcoming staff and friendly atmosphere. Definitely recommend. - Very welcoming staff on front desk and behind the bar.
Room number 4 was very quaint and had everything we needed for my girlfriend’s birthday stay.
Great location and perfect for a little trip into town .
- Gail (9/5): Night out - Good location, friendly staff, lovely food, good atmosphere. And value for money. I didn't like the stairs going up to the rooms
- Martyn (9/5): The Bushel Bury st Edmunds. - Clean and quiet room. All staff friendly and helpful. Very good breakfast and evening meals were good. Mattress on bed a bit too soft for me but ok for a short stay.
- Carol (9/5): 95% satisfied apart from exceedingly hard bed - The breakfast was absolutely impeccable couldn’t fault it & thanked the chef. Location was the best in Bury St Edmunds! Staff was couldn’t do enough for us very welcoming indeed. Wish I was still there! Only one disappointment was the rock hard bed , like sleeping on an ironing board. The staff and everything else was so so good I dare not say.
- Robyn (6/5): Won't stay again... - The location was great for us because it was relatively close to the train station, and our friends own a cafe one minute from the hotel. The bar itself has good food and drinks. Unfortunately, their breakfast was only on from 7-9 on weekdays and 7-9:30 am on weekends. Those were the earliest times of any of the hotels we had stayed at on our whole European trip of 4 different countries and time spent at 25 plus hotels!!) Even, 10 am would have been doable for us...This place is very OLD! The carpet on the stairs is really dirty, and the bathroom had black mold on the ceiling. The smell was so repulsive that I had to hold my breath to use the washroom, and I ended up getting really sick. I have asthma, and I lasted one day before I came down with a terrible chest cold (I think it was from the black mold!)
- Carol (5/5): O.K - Location was perfect for me..two minutes from bus station and five minutes from an event I was attending. The staff were amazing. Decor was tired, carpets need replacing. Stair carpet up to room was in need of a good clean to say the least
- Angus (9/5): -
- Karen (7/5): -
- Nigel (10/5): -
- Debbie (7/5): - Staff very friendly. Breakfast was very nice. Location excellent. Bed very comfortable. Lighting poor in the room. Could do with a new carpet.
- Jennie (8/5): Relaxing stay! - Warm welcome, cosy room, great location and parking. Lighting in room was a bit dim for me.
- George (10/5): Never disappoints staying at the Bushel and look forward to the next visit. - Great pub in a great location.
Very friendly staff and outstanding breakfast!.
Bar food very good as well. Would have loved a softer pillow option but this is very personal and in no way a complaint.
- Calum (9/5): -
- mark (10/5): -
- Sarah (4/5): Staff lovely, facilities poor - Good location. Pleasant, efficient staff. Nice pub Dirty stair carpet and tatty landing area. Poor TV and toilet seat very loose. Breakfast was poor - cheap unhealthy cereals.
- Ian (10/5): Brilliant location , staff and food- we will be back, - Location; easy walk to Bury centre and shops.
All the staff are friendly and helpful; we were always greeted with a smile. Our room was ground floor as requested, and very comfortable, with enough room to move about with walking sticks! Nothing to dislike.
- Michael (8/5): -
- andrew (10/5): -
- William (9/5): Had a wonderful couple of nights at The Bushel. Definitely would say again, it's so close to all ame - Breakfast was very good. A nice area in the bar, nicely set out. Nothing. All was good.
- Wendy (7/5): Fair - Location was perfect for The Apex It was tired in need of redecoration with safety features not in place on the steep stairs to the first floor. If you have mobility issues request a ground floor room.
The staff were happy to re- locate me when I asked. Issues with hot water were an issue I felt
