Guest Reviews
- TheInveterates (8/5): Standard room for the price - Pretty standard room for the price. Clean and complimentary toiletries, along with the usual coffee machine and enough towels. Front desk was very helpful and recommending the Eel River Brewing Company for dinner. Had none of the problems mentioned in some of the older reviews so it appears they have upped their game.
- TrailBlazer733655 (2/5): Gross!!! - If I could give this a -100 I would. Unfortunately we listened to a family member who suggested this location because they know each other. We also
Didn’t want to have to drive all the way to Eureka since our family was in Fortuna.
Our family member called this location and asked if we can rent a room even though online availability was not possible and asked if we can have our two cats in the room we were told sure $80 Which apparently normally the rooms are $100. Money was definitely not the issue but convenience was.
When we arrive to the hotel we waited a few minutes their kid said the owner was in the bathroom as soon as we got there he handed us a key to a room that was not made up he said his wife didn’t do her job and then handed us the master key and told us to go look for a room finally he gave us a different room number he had an errand to run with apparently A local druggie. We didn’t even give them any other info or Payment he told us we could pay the next day. We didn’t really want the responsibility of holding onto the master key so we waited for him to come back about 15 minutes later and gave him the key and he made a key to our room.
We left for the day and left our cats there and arrived back around 11:30 PM my husband couldn’t get the door to open so we assumed that maybe the keys weren’t working properly I was walking back to the front office when I was greeted by his wife and told that I need to pay now. I told her no problem but we were told that we could pay the next morning she finally agreed that she would wait but it had to be cash because their credit card machine was not working.
Throughout the night people were yelling the TV is broken I had no remote I had no towels for a shower there was no hand soap no soap and the bed was gross I slept on top of the blankets with my clothes on and covered my hair with that shirt in case there was lice. It was too late to drive anywhere else. I think next time I’d feel safer in my car.
It was just a horrible experience and yes I told Pree about the experience she seemed uninterested. JUST DONT DO IT!
- Verified traveler (2/5): no solid employee at the reservation - I wait half an hour for the Check-in, because the owner was not at the front desk.
In the Morning, I want to go in the shower, I can’t use it, because there was not a button to change it from the crane to the shower head. At next, I call the front desk. There was only the mother from the owner at the phone. She told, she don’t know, how she can help me, she don’t know, when he come and I should call again in a few hours.
After 2 hours, i leaved the Hostel and Nobody was at the front desk again.
- joejac123 (4/5): Misleading - We were expecting to be in the redwoods in the hotel. Pictures were misleading. It is an old holiday inn which showed it’s age. They advertised a “lumberjack breakfast” which it was far from it. The dog park is primarily rock. Disappointed.
- Rj (10/5): - Rough area, but nice room and people that own the hotel definitely would stay again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - the water would not shut off and the tub I stood in was slick Tape in tub was too worn to make it safe to stand in and the toilet leaked. The attendant was very helpful to find the cover for the key box. I honestly did not feel safe there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Turned out to be nicely remodeled, clean, comfortable and quiet. Don't. Be fooled by location images or sattelite pics (looked shady). Yes it is on the main street and there are two gas stations next to it but that placw went over up above and beyond all expectations. Large room, nice bed, remodeled bathroom with grainte/quartz. It was perfect for our stay and walking distance to restaraunts.
- Mark (4/5): - It's an overpriced dumpy motel. The soap and shampoo dispensers in the shower were all broken. The plug for the heater sparked and smoked when you tried to use it. And I got woken up in the night by dogs barking. Turned out to be one of the cleaning staff being arrested for DUI in the parking lot just out the window.
- David (8/5): - Very small motel but room was clean and comfy. Service very good.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - I know a hotel is a place to spend a night .
But room was smelly .
There was a leak by toilet
No towels
No toilet paper
No thrash cans
Bed was very old , as in bad mattress
Very disappointed
- Susan (10/5): Very nice great service - We stayed for a race and they allowed us a late checkout. Everything was clean and if you needed anything you just had to ask. Would stay again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Terrible- left over food in room and microwave. Load noise outside.
- Verified traveler (2/5): not worth saving $15 bucks - I wanted this hotel to work since I come up this direction for work. But nothing worked... we had to work on tv for about 45 mins.. not what i wanted after a long drive and it was already late at night. the heater had one degree... HOT or COLD. one big towel.. i guess you get what you pay for.... oh and while our TV didnt work, all the other tvs were blaring LOUD. I could hear the entire tv show from my room.
- Fiona (4/5): - As we pulled in to check in at the office, we noticed some other guests had their door wide open and a large array of drug paraphernalia (including a blow torch!) was evident on the table. Our room was on the end and away from "the action." The bed was comfortable, but there were no bedside lamps, just one overhead light. Also, there was no chain on the door, and the smoke detector didn't work. The non-smoking room smelled of cigarette and/or drug smoke. The bathroom was okay. The front desk gave us good restaurant recommendations.
- miboth (6/5): Really a 3.5 - Driving up from LA and wanting to visit the redwoods the following day I made the decision to stay in Fortuna and at the Redwood Inn in particular. I think the price they charge would not be acceptable in a more popular location but since there are limited cities and hotels in this area of northern California I can see why it is justified.
With that being said I was slightly disappointed with my room. On the plus side it was quite large. I do have some minor criticisms and that is why I gave it an average rating. When I go to my room I almost always have to write something down at night. Is it too much to ask that there is some paper and a pencil or pen to use so I don't have to bring them up from my car? I also like to listen to music before I fall asleep. Why can't they buy a cheap radio/clock for each room? Even the cheap chains usually have one.
The breakfast was acceptable and in a large room. The employees I encountered were very pleasant and professional. Just know that at this price you are paying for convenience and location and not luxury and I think you will be satisfied.
- Scott (6/5): - Staff was friendly, bed was decent comfort wise. Unfortunately the coffee maker was broken in our room and floor was wet when we checked in (late check in).
- Steven (4/5): Stay at the redwood RIVERWALK. Avoid this - Booked the wrong hotel. I meant to stay at the redwood inn river walk. Room smelled, countless little things broken, needing repair in room. Cigarette holes in comforter. Bum crushing cans outside all night. Smells from the bathroom of the room next to me intruded. This place should have been $60 a night for what it was. If I hadn’t shown up so late, I would have left to go to the correct hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Hotel - Great experience, just needed a place to sleep after driving up the coast for many hours. The lady at the front office was nice. The rooms bed was very comfortable and soft, slept very well. Linens were clean. The bathroom looked to have been renovated in the past year, it was comfy. Has some old curtains and the tv was not on the wall mount....but who cares when just looking for a place to sleep. The refrigerator was very clean, looked new, microwave was clean. Overall a very comfortable place.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Feared for my saftey as area known for drug trafficing and homeless
- caryl ann (2/5): Don't Bother Booking Here ~ AWFUL on Every Level ~ - Not good at all ~ I left the hotel to go stay elsewhere ~
- CarylAnnn (2/5): Beyond Disappointing ~ One of the Worst - This was one of the WORST places I have ever been in....there isn't enough space to
write about all the negative details....
Just off the Top of the list is that it is Dirty and Ragged ( curtains torn and falling off)
Very obvious thick dirt and dust all around the edges of the room and in the window
and dirty door handles (ICK)
Outlets did not work except in the bathroom area. No paper or pens or information
in the room. Miscommunication with office help and owner. Missing things in the
room amenities No lamps ~ just overhead spotlights in a couple of places.
I had booked (and later confirmed) 2 nights. Was awoken the next morning with
loud banging and hollering that I HAD TO GET OUT because they had me for only
one night. The girl ARGUED with me and forced me to come to the office in my
pajamas with my credit card ~ I called Hotels.com and spoke with someone. They
were not concerned ~ ended up offering a credit for my "troubles" ~ I just packed
up and moved out at noon....no shower no nothing ! The whole place is not up to
standard in anyone's book !
Side note ~ there was Only ONE (old nasty) Hair Dryer for the entire complex !
You have to "request" it and wait your turn !! Ridiculous !
The young girl I spoke with told me she has "owned" the complex for 15 years ~
Shame on Her for being so Lax. She told me I should LEAVE if I was not "happy"
I Left Immediately !
- david (2/5): Sorry - 3:00am very loud people talking and going in and out of their room couldn't complain because no one was there very noisy
- yuryd2014 (2/5): Be careful with bookings in this hotel - The motel is located around the gas station, which was fine with us. What was not fine - is that the motel could cancel your booking in any time. When we arrived in the middle of the night and showed the staff our reservation for the room they told us that all the rooms were taken (even though we've booked the room like two month before our visit) and if we've wanted to have a solid reservation, we should have booked the room on the motel site and not through other third party services. The staff was rude and was not interested in our problem at all. So, we were left without the room in the middle of the night with no vacant rooms in the nearby hotels.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Family owned, moderately kept room - The room itself was decent, seemed newer mattress and had cable tv and wifi. Little things like no soap or body wash available, and the coffee maker not working didn't affect my stay. I brought this to the staff's attention and I'm sure it was addressed. Overall I would stay here again.
Very limited parking and large vehicles aren't accommodated well.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Had to call the cops on the low life's next door for fighting and slamming into our wall. Room was nasty, not happy at all my money was wasted on this place.
- Verified traveler (6/5): If you have to stay here - This area is pretty bleak but comfortable and clean, although the deodorants are perfumed and are a bit strong. This place is Rough on the outside
- Robert Sisemore (6/5): Room decoration needs chane - My wife didn't like the color of the carpet and the walls, it's too bright. We prefer the neutral colors. Furnitures are too old and look so cheap, cabinet is missing a drawer
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice family run the motel. Always responsive.
- Randall (6/5): tiny parking lot - I have a extended cab truck and g\the parking lot was tiny I bent my truck trying to get in!
- Cori (4/5): Location - The location was great for the car show that we attended. The parking way tight but worked. Rooms need a microwave. We rented 2 rooms and one was nicer and cleaner than the other. The lady that runs the hotel was great, super accommodating and helpful. The rooms could definitely be a little cleaner. The other hotels might be nicer but are also double the price so it's a toss up
- Zinfandelista (4/5): Basics Missing - Our room, as do all of the rooms, face a gas station. That in itself would be okay, but this motel failed in other areas. The bathroom counter was not clean and there was no iron and no blow dryer. A minuscule amount of coffee was available for usage in the tiny coffee maker. We were not able to tap into the advertised WiFi. I guess it is only available in the small reception area? The positives were that the beds were comfortable, plenty of hot water, and the soaps and lotions were a nice touch. There are a few restaurants, grocery stores and a movie theater located in walking distance. Just okay for a one night stay, however some basics were missing.
- Cindy (8/5): Hotel convenient to Humboldt Redwoods - Clean rooms with comfortable beds. Very close to the north entrance of the Avenue of the Giants. Be aware that they do not have hair dryers in the rooms.
- michael (4/5): Awful Nite Sleep - Hotel is situated on busiest intersection in town....and too close, road directly behind, in the front and on the side. Repairs in hotel room were obviously not accomplished by anywhere near a professional; electrical wall plugs half way up the wall, plug in your cell and it hangs there....great location though!
- patti (2/5): Remodeled...ok...clean and customer service...no - Upon our arrival on a prepaid room you did not get the king bed the counter person lied to us the room was half remodeled there was cobwebs hanging a foot down above the beds and the blankets had fecal matter and stains on them nasty do not stay here
- Verified traveler (6/5): More Or Less OK Place - Pretty basic place but clean enough. Location more or less ok. Air conditioning worked.
- Tom (4/5): no morning shower - Only one overhead light...no lamps on bedside , also no clock/radio or phone.morning surprise: no way to turn on shower, the head of which was attached to wall by a piece of pvc bend by heating. No soap or shampoo. Towel was soiled.
Surprised those location offered by Hotels.com
- NyonyaLady (8/5): Fantastic stay in a great location - We had not expected much from this place but was surprised to see that it had been remodeled and had a great display of bath amenities(shampoo hair conditioner and body lotion) from dispensers in the bathroom. Even the sink area had similar dispensers for soap and body lotion. Room was clean comfortable with good pillows and mattress. No breakfast was included and we never expected any. A good quiet inn to stay as they have only 16 rooms!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Don't waste your time - Paid for a non-smoking room. The room reeked of cigarette smoke. On top of that, the batteries had been taken out of the smoke detectors! Completely unsafe. The other characters in the hotel were pretty sketchy. Totally over priced.
- George (6/5): Ok room. Terrible location - Motel behind a gas station on Main St. Room quite dated but clean and had some recent upgrades.
- travlbuff2016 (8/5): Nice staff - The staff at the motel was very nice. The accommodations were okay, considering the price. I think this would probably be rated a 2 star motel. It's definitely not deluxe, but it was clean and quiet at night. Location was convenient, as it was right off the 101 freeway and close to gas stations. I think this would probably be rated a 2 star hotel.
- Travlbuff (6/5): Reasonably priced motel - My first impression was not good, but I warmed up to the place.. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay, this is the place. Definitely not deluxe, but it was reasonably priced and clean. The staff were very nice. Quiet at night. Bed was okay, but mattress was a bit too soft for my liking. Located right at the edge of downtown Fortuna.
- Laurie (8/5): Very clean and comfortable hotel in Fortuna - I wasn't expecting too much based on the hotel photos, but the room was very clean and comfortable. The beds were wonderful!
- Kitty Felix (8/5): Superb New Management Creates Diamond in the Rough - It doesn't look like much from the outside, but your amenities are offered in spades once inside. From flat screens and full cable, to completely remodeled granite bathrooms with waterfall faucets and shiny new tubs, we were pleasantly surprised.
Initially, we had a mix up with our reservation that Expedia soon sorted out. But not before I had a hormonal pregnant-lady meltdown at the front desk. The owner herself spoke with me the next day after getting rid of the employee I dealt with and offered a future discount. She was unbelievably warm and treated my embarassing ouburst with empathy as a mother herself.
She and her husband have vastly improved the property and my family had a great relaxing weekend here. Even the beds were really comfortable (at places twice the price, beds are too rigid and feel like cardboard). My husband was able to take our son for a walk downtown as the hotel is located at the heart of the main street. Which meant I got to eat cereal in bed and watch television in peace for the first time in months. Top that with getting to take a hot bath without the interruption of a toddler wanting to hurl himself in with me, and it was luxurious!
We are definitely going to book our "mommy staycations" here! And happily pay full rate because it's worth it to support a local family business that puts customers first.
- Chris (2/5): Not a nice hotel by the Redwoods - First experience is that you dont have any room to park anything bigger than a Honda Civic, let alone a Yukon with trailer. Had to park on a side street and hope you dont get a ticket. Bought a deluxe room with 2 large Queens. The bathroom was dirty and we seen blood stains on the walls, linens, and drapes. Bathroom door opens in and just nicks the toilet seat to get in or out of bathroom. People walking around outside the hotel yelling about getting their money back early hours in the morning. No breakfast or vending. No real food places or shopping close by. Most of them are Cash Only or those Liquor store mini-marts. Horrible experience overall, wouldnt go back if I was paid to stay.
- David (6/5): - Seedy part of town, Had to go to office for tp none in unit. Electronic key didn.t work and required maintenance.
- Janet (8/5): Nice enough place right downtown. - The room was clean. Decor was not to my taste but was newer and ok. Right downtown but quiet.. Both my husband and I slept well.
- Brent (2/5): Sketchy neighborhood, thin blanket, no soap!!! - Needed a last minute hotel for a business trip and this was the best "deal" in the area. Next time I'll pay the few dollars more to stay elsewhere...the parking lot didn't feel safe with sketchy characters lurking outside of some covered areas. Check in was a bit time consuming as the clerk was pleasant but totally inexperienced. Room was spacious but there was a cloying deodorizing room freshener smell that was overpowering. Clean sheets. It one thin blanket so had to leave the heater on all night. Showering the next morning, I discovered none of the soap dispensers had any shampoo or soap. When I told the clerk, he said he knew and "it was being ordered" I said they should but some soap and shampoo until it arrives. Truly horrible stay.
- amandaj39 (10/5): Great stay - Neat, clean, and remodeled hotel. New modern including sink, fridge an includes wifi an all tv channels you can imagine, unique look an friendly staff. Perfect for quiet stay an just right off the 101 on Main Street. Nice to know it's walking distance to many places to eat etc. Loved it!
- L9984EDdanielleb (8/5): Perfect for our stay! - Great price, friendly service and nice rooms! We were there for just one night but the workers were helpful with food, activities and even fun trivia about the Fortuna area. Would recommend this hotel for future stay.
- Joseph (10/5): Convenient and nice Hotel. - We had a wonderful stay.
- helenskiMinnesota (6/5): Getting remodeled, will be nicer when finished. - On our way south, we stopped here not wanting to spend a ton on a room for one night. We could tell the owners were in the middle of remodeling as it had been a tired little spot beforehand. New keyless entry, New bathrooms were good - granite counter tops with square bowl raised sinks and waterfall faucets gave a modern touch New brightly patterned carpets and brightly painted walls spruced up the room. Bed was comfy. New windows apparent. Room had a newer small microwave and fridge, thanks for those! Outdated furniture needs to be replaced next. Shades of the 60s. The motel is situated next to a gas station on a quieter street. We got a little intimidated when four large young guys drove in with a loud truck. They checked in across the way from us. Deep voices and shoes that must have had metal cleats as they clanked across the walkway. Who wears those these days? Guys - when it is late, keep your voices down, it's not all about how cool you are! Anyway, not the fault of the motel at all. Coffee pot was basic and did the trick. All in all, this is an OK place that is in the midst of some TLC. When done, it will morph into this century but, after all, you don't see the furniture when you are sleeping! Kudos to the owners for putting a ton of cash into updates. Like the bathrooms! Recommend adding towel racks.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Downtown hotel completely remodeled. - Great hotel and a good rate. The remodeling that the new owners did was excellent. The rooms were clean, modern and large. I was apprehensive about booking a hotel that was not connected with a large chain like Holiday Inn or Choice Hotels, but this hotel was excellent and convenient.
- Keith (6/5): - Average. Better than I expected
- Jason (8/5): Surprised it was so nice. - Working in the area. Nice convenient spot. Looks recently renovated.
- Scott (6/5): Not my first choice in Fortuna - Overall just average. Would not stay again
- Paula (6/5): Convenient hotel for passing through - Convenient to the downtown area, inexpensive, staff was helpful
- garysO7188LA (8/5): Newly Remodeled - Very nice rooms. Recently redecorated. Included microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker. Staff was good and attentive. Very nice place to stay and reasonably priced. Convenient to where i was travelling. Nice town with restaurants within walking distance.
- Verified traveler (8/5): exterior ughs! interior aws!!! - Late in early out. Great bed! Slept well-quiet room. Shabby area/exterior is deceiving vs room comfort! Would stay again.
- KK (6/5): Newly renovated motel off the 101 - If you're driving the 101 and need a place to stop along the way, this hotel was newly renovated, very clean, and very close to the exit. Not much to offer other than a clean room, but that's all we really needed for a quick stop and sleep. I think they are still finishing up their renovations, our room did not have a mini fridge, wifi, and the tv connection kept dropping off- but I think those are all things that will be fixed once they finish the property.
- Anna/Pamela (8/5): - Overall nice hotel. If looking to have a good breakfast, best ever. Was disappointed, we were told we could not be on the top floor with our room choice; had to pay extra for top floor and different bed. Would have liked to know that up front.
- Paul (4/5): Overrated and Overpriced and - Rated by EXPEDIA as a 2.5 star hotel, this facility does not have the amenities for a one star.
No cloth cabinet, not even a hanger
No fridge, although mentioned in the reservation
No facial tissues
Shower not working
No breakfast, in an area with not many eating facilities around. Yes, the Inn keeper offered us a couple buns and juice. No coffee, though!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - nice place to rest as i was passing through.
