Guest Reviews
- Cecily (10/5): - The one bedroom cabin overlooking the Southern Ocean, next stop Antartica was suberb. Wakeup to the freshest of airs and beautiful swells rolling in to greet you each day, each day different with colours and light. It is so beautiful, peace surrounds you and wildlife abounds. The cabin is cosy, comfortable, clean and a short drive to national park if you want a sit down meal or many amazing sites to be seen. This is a must do stay on this gorgeous island of OZ called Kangaroo Island. Thankyou so much for a most unique and wonderful stay. Regards Cecily and John.
- Karen (8/5): - If you love an amazing view then this is the place that you want to stay. You could spend hours just watching the changing view during the day.
We had a wallaby and her joey feed around the cabin which was lovely.
Easy walk to the beach to enjoy either the beautiful beach or to enjoy some fishing.
The bed was comfy but the couches could do with an update.
We were lucky enough to not have anyone else in the other cabin as there is not enough separation or privacy if there was someone else there.
Overall a wonderful stay but is starting to feel in need of a little TLC.
- Craig (8/5): - Fantastic location which justifies the high price. Duplex apartment which was comfortable, but definitely not fantastic.
- sarah (10/5): - The isolation was amazing, I don’t think I realized the two cottages were connected to privacy could be an issue if the other people were chatty!
- Tanya (10/5): - The view from all of the rooms was absolutely stunning.
We definitely recommend to book the Stormy Petrel Room as the bedroom looks out over the cliffs.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the location and the serenity, the fishing was great and amazing views
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The view from these apartments is fabulous and it’s a short walk to the beach. BUT... there were significant water issues. It was impossible for two people to take consecutive short showers and both have hot water. Also, the tap water, rainwater, while safe to drink, tasted unappealing. The bed was fine and the cooking facilities adequate for simple meals, if rather cramped. We would try to find other accommodations another time where we didn’t feel that we were camping at a rather expensive price.
- Gil (10/5): - This property is the best place to stay on Kangaroo Island. Ideal for relaxing and access to all the island.
- Diane (10/5): - This place was amazing - quiet, beautiful scenery. No TV in the cabins but we were not really there long enough anyway. Clean - firewood available. No internet connection except with Telstra xx No shops nearby so stock up.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overpriced but recommended with caveat - At $300 a night these units are overpriced for the service provided relying on the natural features of their location to make them desirable. For $300 a night it is unusual to be told to make sure you take out the trash and clean and put away all dishes to enable the owners to manage a fast turnover and "avoid surcharges". For $300 a night I expect room service at least equivalent to a motel - they can take out the trash and do any minor wash up and still enable fast turnover so what is wrong with this mob other than attitude.
Having to stuff kitchen paper under a dividing door to the adjoining unit to avoid overhearing every word of a normally lively family next door discussion was annoying.
- Graeme (8/5): - very spacious
- Verified traveler (8/5): Romantic Seculded Getaway - We stayed in the modern cabin and the views were amazing! Great location if you are looking for a secluded getaway to unplug. We ordered the pre-prepared breakfast and dinner package and everything was delicious!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Magnificent view, great location. Modern cabin with adequate facilities. Made our holiday even more amazing.
- Elaine (10/5): Great views, perfect location - Stayed here for 2 nights but wish we had booked for longer. We stayed in cabin Loch Sloy which was on the end of the row. It is a magical setting with the most amazing views but all the cabins have the same view. The staff in the wildlife sanctuary, which is where you go to check in were very friendly and helpful, let us check in early which was very welcome as it was raining. The cabin has a wood burner with plenty of firewood supplied, very cosy and warm. The cabin has a full kitchen with full size fridge making it great for longer stays. The kitchen could do with a bit of upgrading but otherwise it was great value for money and my husband and I had a great stay, taking walks on the beach and through the wildlife sanctuary spotting quite a few Koalas and Wallabies. Situated in a perfect location for easy access to all of the main attractions of that region of the Island. I would certainly stay here again. Wifi only available in the reception and no phone reception for us which quite nice for a short time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Southern Ocean View - The view from the cabin was spectacular of the Southern Ocean. We stayed in Stormy Petrel-one of the renovated cabins. Huge windows to see the ocean. There was ample space in the cabin for 2 people.
The bed was a bit soft and the pillows were flat. I was surprised since it is one of the newer renovated cabins. We had a little problem when I booked the cabin through expedia. I reserved it using an American Express card but Hanson Cabins doesn't accept American Express. Luckily, I emailed and found out my reservation wasn't on file but the cabin was available. I sorted it out with the manager after several emails. We got a 10% discount on the noctural walk which was great. We didn't have time to do the free walk during the day. Overall a wonderful stay and would recommend the place especially since it is close to Flinders Chase National Park.
- Peter (10/5): Spectacular views. Close to beach and attractions. - Beautiful and relaxing environment. We were able to see the tourist attractions early and return and relax at the end of the day.
- Peter (10/5): Quiet piece of paradise. - Fantastic apartment in the middle of nowhere. Overlooking a pristine beach safe for swimming and snorkelling and a surf break out the back. Right next to Fliders Chase National park. Best of all - no mobile coverage or tv! Great place to get away from the rat race.
- keith (8/5): Lovely site - We got a great price on this 1970s style beach shack. The view is stunning! Unfortunately we had the Montebello Room which was right next to the communal dining area and one night it was extremely noisy. We would stay again but try to get the room closest to the coast (and pay much more for that up-to-date and luxurious pad).
- Melissa (10/5): Spectacular views!!!!! - We stayed in one of the older cabins but it is very well maintained and clean! We are on a 30 day tour of NZ and Australia, so this was our 13th hotel to stay in. By far the best view ever during this trip or any other! Sitting on the porch watching the waves from this angle is unlike any beach trip we’ve taken! Normally the waves are coming toward you, here you see the waves from the side (if that makes sense)! You just have to experience it!
Also, we highly recommend doing the nocturnal tour at Hanson Bay Wildlife Center! Very special!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful location, secluded. - The location is unbeatable and the cabins are beautiful. With only a few cabins and people anywhere near the site, we basically had the beach to ourselves. It was also really convenient to visit Flinders Chase. However, there were multiple compounding mix-ups with double booking the cabins. It all worked out fine, but the lack of cell reception at the site and difficulty contacting staff took away one of our three evenings just sorting it out. Also, bring some soap to wash the dishes as no soap was provided.
- Cam (10/5): WHAT A LOCATION!! - Hanson Bay Cabins are a rare find in the world of modern travel. Tucked away in the most picturesque of locations, the six cabins are all that is located at the white sands & blue water of Hanson Bay. You have the beach to yourself, your have this little pocket of paradise to yourself, and all just a short drive from the highlights of Kangaroo Island being Flinders Chase National Park, The Remarkable Rocks & Admirals Arch.
The remoteness of the cabins is their charm, so be prepared to pick up your keys about 10 minutes drive from the cabins. Expect to have to drive down 5km of unsealed road. Be prepared for limited Telstra reception. But this is all why these cabins are so remarkable.
My advice. Book STORMY PETREL cabin. It is one of the two newer cabins, and has floor to celing windows looking out 180 degrees. It is worth every extra cent.
Given this property is just 3km from the Southern Ocean Lodge which has a minimum rate of $5k for two nights - you can not get better value than staying at Hanson Bay Lodges.
