Guest Reviews
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sheila (10/5): TOTALLY RELAXING - Everything was wonderful. Chris, the Landlord, was friendly and welcoming, and so were the rest of the team. The pub felt very homely, and we had a very relaxing stay. Our dog was made welcome too, and the staff were happy to show him attention. The view from our bedroom was amazing. Breakfast was lovely; and also the meals served in the restaurant. We we thrilled to have found this gem of a pub, but so disappointed to discover the Owner/Landlord was leaving.
- Hugh (9/5): Superb -
- Patricia (9/5): Would recommend - The staff were very friendly. The food was excellent and the rooms were lovely. I’m a light sleeper and could hear the traffic noise but my husband is hard if hearing and slept a full 11 hours.
- Gill (8/5): Very good -
- Baxter (8/5): A warm and friendly welcome and a comfortable stay. - We received a very warm welcome and were extremely well looked after throughout our stay. The room was very nice with a great big shower and very comfortable bedding. It would be unfair to say we didn't like the location, as it was clear on booking, but it is on a busy road and there isn't anywhere you can walk to, but we were expecting that so it was not an issue and it is not far to drive to Richmond and other nice villages.
- Michael (3/5): Poor - Okroom very noisy
- Gary (9/5): Superb - Friendly staff, excellent food, good value.
- Graham (10/5): First class in all respects - Very welcoming, for us the ideal halfway location, although in mist of refurbishment spotlessly clean, really well maintained, fantastic food, great portions, good beer. Staff really friendly and very attentive. We were most definitely make this our halfway house in future and I would highly recommend hotel to anybody wishing to stay in the Barnard Castle area. Actually, really was nothing to dislike about the property
- Kevin (10/5): Perfect stay and would most definitely stay there again. - Clean, comfortable bed , food and the staff were just so nice and accommodating. apart from it being on the main road, nothing, but I’m being a bit picky to be honest.
- Laura (8/5): Very good -
- Lindsey (9/5): Great short stay in beautiful surroundings - Very good quality food and generous portions. Nothing
- Sharp (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (10/5): An exceptional stay with Chris and the lovely Kath who made us so welcome. We also appreciated their sense of humour!! - Beautifully clean, well organised and the bedroom was just lovely. N/A
- Hannah (10/5): Fabulous food and a lovely warm welcome - Food was amazing very friendly staff loved the views out of the windows The outside looked scruffy which was a shame as it would be easy to pass it and not see what a gem of a place it is.
- George (8/5): Best steak pie for miles around! - Bang on the A66 (but quieter than you might expect), The Fox Hall Inn offers clean, comfortable accomodation, but it's two big attractions are the friendliness of the staff and the food. Cooked breakfast was fantastic, as was the evening meal we had the night before. Best homemade steak pie for miles around!
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Laurence (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carol (9/5): Great atmosphere and facilities - Lovely room, exceptional host, superb breakfast and very dog friendly Busy road so not much options for walking dog except in field at back.
- Dave (10/5): Relaxing stay with lovely views - The location and views were lovely.
- James (9/5): Excellent good old fashioned hospitality. Hard to find these days. - On a busy road but the road noise wasn’t an issue.
Chris was excellent and couldn’t do enough for us during our stay. The only issue for me was the pillows weren’t the best.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lis (8/5): Very good - The location was excellent
- Wendy (10/5): Very enjoyable - Food and hospitality all excellent. Our room was at the back so very quiet with great views :-) Proximity to the busy 'A' road was a slight negative especially when exiting right also slightly noisy.
- Lindsay (10/5): Exceptional -
- Becki (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were all very friendly, excellent service all round. Food was fantastic, great value for money, definitely will be visiting again
- Conrad (9/5): Superb - Good location for links to waterfalls comfy bed and great food staff were great Nothing
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Samuel (7/5): Good -
- Shelley (4/5): Clean tidy deserted and odd - The property was deserted and had a closed sign up on first inspection. There was a number to call to be let in. There were three young men and what we believed to be the owner in the bar. The bar was shut. The bar didn’t open until 5pm. There is nothing anywhere near the hotel.
We got an uber to Richmond(£10) had a pleasant evening. Local taxi back (£30!!) at 10pm, hotel in darkness all
Shut down and locked. Let ourselves in. Breakfast nice and waitress cheerful.
The two room
We’re clean and linen spotless, but we’re almost £100 per room …. Nowhere to drink, and all Shut closed and locked up before we got back …. I think the best description would be clean, tidy, lacking in atmosphere and just a little odd …..
- Margaret (6/5): Pleasant - Clean, friendly staff Food
- Sueb2023 (10/5): Exceptional - Location is roadside but was easy to find and we didn't have a problem as our room was at the back od the property
- Nathan (10/5): Exceptional - A last-minute stop over for a couple of nights. The rooms are large, very clean and well stocked. Well done on the real coffee in the rooms. Great view from the window of the surrounding dales. Having not had a break of any sort in close to 3 years, Chris and Co were very accommodating of our alcoholic ramblings. Very engaging and kind people, and let's not forget the food in the restaurant, standard pub fare done well, and that's how it should be, mostly house made too. The breakfast is a high-quality offering with everything you need to get you through an entire day without eating again. Although we plan to stop in Yorkshire for good, we will support this establishment in the future. Cheers, Chris, and all staff for a great stay.
- Gamwell (8/5): Very good -

- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional - Easy to find. Really helpful, friendly owner. Food super, staff friendly and happy. Room was very clean and tidy. Everything we needed. Would definitely stay again. Highly recommend Fox Hall Inn.
- Alasdair (8/5): One night stop over at a convenient b&b. - Perfect one night stop location as a b&b. Similar prices to the mainstream travelling hotels but with a personal touch, in both the service and the food.
- Don (8/5): Very good -
- Helen (8/5): Lovely quiet location. Well looked after -
- Valerie (9/5): Superb - Very comfortable and clean. A simple, well decorated room with everything we needed.
Staff were friendly and we enjoyed dinner and breakfast.
- Gaile (10/5): Lovely memories of a comfortable and stylish inn. - Lovely airy rooms, excellent breakfast, nice bar area. Open location. I thought some glamping pods would be worthwhile investing in.
The postcode brought up Barnard Castle on my satnav. It was not super easy to find. If we knew it was on A66 it would havee been easier to find.
- Alison (10/5): Great - Great greetings. Good clean room. Views were beautiful. Dinner was great all cooked to order.
The Landlord was very accommodating and staff were brilliant. Breakfast was fantastic.
- Darleen (9/5): Friendly, value for money, great food. - Really friendly host and staff. Great food. Value for money. The person in the room above snoring!!!
- Ben (10/5): Great well kept Inn rustic/ modern blend with fabulous bar . - Nice views - great stand alone bath in the superior room.
Breakfast was fantastic and Chris the landlord went out his way to accommodate a few requests with local knowledge of sites.
👍🏻 A66
- Cox (10/5): So enjoyable we are going to return in late spring! - Food excellent and super evening menu. Everything freshly cooked and served on hot plates. Full marks! Bar and dining room comfortable and staff made us feel very welcome.
- John (10/5): Excellent will definitely be back - Location the hotel was spotless bedrooms big nice bar and restaurant Nothing
- Craig (9/5): Very enjoyable stay, would go back no problem - The room was larger than I expected, lovely bathroom. Lovely little touches like a rose and chocolate on the bed as it was valentine's. The staff were so helpful and friendly especially the housekeeper.
- Alexander (10/5): Exceptional -
- Timothy (9/5): Superb - Rooms large and warm. Bed was of a good size and extra comfy. Evening meal and breakfast excellent with a good sized pot of tea served. Staff brilliant and friendly. Nothing. It is a little way outside of Richmond itself and some rooms do face the main A66, so a car is required and road noise could be a problem for some.
- Jean (9/5): The location and comfort of the Inn ideally suited the purpose of our stay. - Very handy location at side of A66. Very comfortable bed and a warm welcome from the staff. Traffic noise, but property has good glazing that minimised what could have been a poor nights sleep.
- Gillian (8/5): Very good -
- Steve (7/5): Good - The room was immaculate. Cosy, exceptionally clean and beautiful decor. Lovely to have generous selection of tea coffee and biscuits. Black out blind was great and the staff were friendly too. Housekeeper was amazing! 😊 The place was situated on the side of the A66 main road which needs to be made clearer in description not East Layton village.
When we checked in the Breakfast times had to be staggered so the choice of when to eat was limited to early time slots of 7.45am or 8.15am which ruled out a more leisurely morning given this was a weekend away.
It would have been helpful to have a breakfast menu and have a choice on what was included.
Bar and restaurant lacked atmosphere.
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional - The staff and whole stay
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - a little gem of a place so welcoming food was lovely staff brilliant will definately be c oming back nothing apart from having to leave
- Kevin (8/5): Very good -
- Tracy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Denise (10/5): Stay for a night in total heaven. ❤️ - Was an amazing stay. Chris and his staff where so so helpful. Nothing was a problem. The room was so nice. Everything you needed was there. The evening meal was so tasty, and the breakfast was out of this world. One big hate for me and my hubby is cold plates. They where piping hot. All beautiful produce. Again nothing was a problem for Chris. A lovely, lovely man. Location was lovely to. Didn't want to leave. Will be back next year for sure. Again thank you to all of you for our amazing stay. Merry christmas.xxxx🎁🎄❤️ Nothing at all.xxxx

- Jerry (9/5): Superb -
- Philip (8/5): Very good -
- George (3/5): Great staff good food, noisy poor beds - It was clean welcoming staff were attentive very very good food The room was hot even for November, when opened the window property is right next to main A66 Road so Lorriys going past early and late , feels like being on a runway.
Bed was not comfortable
