• TERRY (10/5): I love this place - Seriously, I would stay here for more than a week if there were more resorts than just Appi Kogen in the vicinity that I could bounce between. I loved this place. From the kind hosts, to the common area, to the spacious washitsu, this place feels very much like home. Its quiet (good sound dampening in the room), clean, and has a vintage feel without feeling run down. Common kitchen area is fully stocked, beautiful wood furniture, and a huge fireplace. The buffet breakfast was great (its in a separate building about a 5 min walk away). Theres an Indian place and a Yakiniku joint easily walkable too. Nothing.

• Zi (7/5): - The host operates three properties in this area: the main building “Life is Beautiful”, Arts Color, and Earth Color. What I liked: One of the biggest advantages is the ski resort shuttle service provided by the host. You can easily make reservations via LINE, which is very convenient. Even if you miss the pickup time window, the public shuttle bus is easy to use, and it’s about a 15-minute walk to the ski slopes. The main building Life is Beautiful has the best location, right across from the shuttle bus stop. Unfortunately, it was fully booked during my stay. I stayed at Arts Color, which is slightly farther away but still within walking distance of the shuttle stop. 1. There is no separate ski storage room. All ski equipment is stored in the entrance hall. My ski boots were placed near a hot air blower. The dryer was not turned on at that time, but it may have been turned on later by another guest. One of my ski boots was exposed to hot air all night and became deformed and unusable. I strongly suggest adding clear warning signs near the blower or installing a barrier to keep equipment at a safe distance. 2. Arts Color is managed by staff, but most of the time no one was available. There is a coin-operated washing machine in the building, but when I wanted to use it, I couldn’t find any staff to exchange coins. In the end, I had to ask other guests for coins. 3. The overall cleanliness could be improved. The bathroom was very damp, and there were water droplets and mold spots on the walls and around the toilet, possibly due to a faulty ventilation fan. When I first checked in, the towels in the room had an unpleasant smell; the towels provided after room cleaning were fine. The pillows on the bed also had a slight odor.

• James (7/5): Relaxing and eccentric. - I enjoyed both the dinner and breakfast. I think it should be made clear that the pension is an annex. It was a surprise that meals would not be in the same building. For me, not a problem, I like walking, but car service for breakfast is rather strange.
• Rob (9/5): Great family fun as it was our grandkids first time skiing - Arts Color was located five minutes drive from the Ski slopes! Tom could not have been more helpful when picking us up and was enormous entertainment to our grandchildren dressing up as a different character every time he picked us up! The language barrier was a little bit of an issue as we would’ve liked rooms adjoining as there was six in our party. Nevertheless, I tried their best to help.

A special mention goes to the owner, Tommo, who was exceptionally polite and accommodating, always going above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. Accomodations felt like a cozy home, came in after snowboarding to the smell of coffee and fire place on in the communal area. Buffet breakfast was amazing, and Bon Bon the resident cute little dog was a hit with the kids. Nothing. Tom and his team are fantastic and there is nothing that could be improved on. He said when I checked in please feel like you are at home and that's exactly what it was like for my entire stay. Dropped off and picked up from the mountain every day (short 5min drive). Accommodation is clean, comfortable and homely. Facilities to either cook for yourself or do yourself a favour and book in for dinner at the main building a short 5 minute walk away. In terms of value for money, this is one of the best stays I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing and I will definitely be back!! I had to come home.. I will definitely stay for longer next time!!

• April (7/5): Good - The owner, Tom was very responsive with messaging and answering questions. The room was spacious and it had a fridge and microwave. The best part was the location, less than 5 minutes driving to APPI. We had to leave early, due to unfortunate circumstances and they kept items we left behind safe for us. Make sure you know what time to be there to eat, we accidentally missed breakfast. Most people eat early and then hit the mountain. With two teenagers who wanted to sleep in, the breakfast times are early.

Breakfast : Not variety. Location : Not close to public transport but the host will support by picking up/ dropping off if required.

• Reise_guru (2/5): Disrespectful behaviour of owner destroyed the positive things this pension could have... - - Everyone is very friendly, except the owner Sato-san! - Especially Henry was super nice! - The owner was very disrespectful to us - I have never experienced such a behaviour in entire Japan!! - The dinner was only half of the menu (do not expect the menu from the pictures!!!) - The dinner price on booking.com corresponds to the full menu, but even though the owner only served half menu. - The breakfast and dinner are served in another pension. - The fire place fills the entire house and rooms with smoke. @Sato-san as friendly advice and things to avoid to say: - avoid saying "Do you have a problem?" - "avoid saying We do not speak English, this is Japan!" - Don't make your problems to the ones of the guests. - Don't prevent customers for 30min from having dinner (food is getting cold) just to tell us we should contact booking.com and thus it is our problem. - You cannot buy my rating later on when you already behaved disrespectful to customers.

• Sherlock (10/5): Exceptional - Easy access to the ski resort, nice and clean room and lovely public area. It couldn't be such a blast without the prompt help of Tom-san and Henry. The best Christmas holidays ever. 🤘🤠
• N (7/5): Good value for money - Host was very friendly and more than helpful with everything. The house was in a great location just minutes from appi kogen ski resort. Facilities were good for an old place like this. The room we were in seemed to have.a musty smell. My guess is rising damp has invaded the property due to the rain and snow. The air caused some minor irritation to all our breathing during the night. A night back in Tokyo cured the congestion and inflammation in sinuses and lungs. I'm worried for people that stay for longer periods as the air might cause health issues if there is mould spores.

• Boon (9/5): Superb - The breakfast place - eating behind the fireplace give you a great holiday mood! The host of the hotel is very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, u need to carry your luggage up to the room on 1st floor.

• Terumi (10/5): Highly recommended for the people looking for high quality and local hospitality. - We took JR Hanawa train and prepared to walk from the station. When we got off the train at Appikogen, the owner Tomo was there to pick up us which was amazing ! We enjoyed traditional Japanese style room and hospitality. We enjoyed lovely freshly brewed coffee too.

• Ayuna (5/5): could not relax - clean and friendly staff As we had a non-resident of Japan with our group had to pay the full amount and could not use Japan travel support benefits. Got a call out of the blue from booking .com staff and forced to give the decision on the spot without being able to look for more details. It was late and we didn’t have other option but paying what they asked for. It put a stain on our time there, didn’t put lower rating only because how friendly and supportive the staff was. Hope to get a refund from initial booking soon.
• Matthew (9/5): Great. - Fantastic local snow field accommodation in a terrific resort. We spent 3 days skiing and 4 days at Arts Color and enjoyed every minute. Great food, hospitality and service.
• Eric (10/5): Super snow lodging experience near the Appi slopes - Amazing pension with rooms with private bathrooms. It takes its name seriously - each room is themed on a color, mine was Orange. Room was wide with a counter and a small kitchen, overcoming my expectations. Located around 15 min away from the gondola. And the common facilities are amazing - it was fun to drink with other guests in the evening while feeding the fireplace with wood. And the owner is super kind and took us from/to the slopes on a cool Toyota Tundra! Breakfast and dinner are served in their sister hotel - "Life Is Beautiful" - which is a 5-min walk. However, the food quality compensates the hustle.
