Guest Reviews
- Ian (10/5): A great place to stay - A great place to stay! The hotel combined two of the officer's quarters from Fort Seward to make a beautiful building. While the building is from the early 1900s, it is beautifully maintained. The owner is very helpful - he went so far as to dig out a socket wrench to help me with an errant piece of photo equipment. Would definitely stay here again.
- Stephen (10/5): - Historic hotel with comfortable accomodations. No open restaurants nearby, but some in the city.
- Clarence (8/5): - Great staff , clean, large rooms
- Jozef (6/5): - Beautiful historic property, but if you are not into old stuff you may not enjoy it.
- Colleen (10/5): - Eat check-in, friendly service, helpful information
- Richard (10/5): - It is a historical building and this gives it character. Beds are comfortable. Bathroom walls is small as expected for a historical building.
- Anne (10/5): - Delightful as always.
- Catherine (10/5): - Historical building with charm. Reception Desk was very accommodating and waited up for us to check in even though we arrived on the ferry past 10 pm.
- Scott (10/5): - The owner Jeff and I were talking and he knew I was leaving for the ferry back to Seattle the next morning, but I had the incorrect time. He personally came to my room to tell me to please double check. I would have missed it had he not saved me. Thank you so much.
This is customer service 100%. Jeff I cannot thank you enough. Great stay. Clean and quiet.
- Robert (10/5): - The owner, Jeff, was very friendly us as we arrived and checked us in while also outlining some local establishments and attractions that we might find interesting.
- Debra (8/5): - Quiet and clean
- Ralph (10/5): - Very comfortable accommodation in a beautiful historic building well located in Haines. Jeff was very helpful in recommending what to see and where to eat.

- Robert (10/5): - The property & hotel itself was like history stood still. Beautiful view of the mountains & water. Clean friendly can't say enough about the atmosphere of the property. Epic property
- John (10/5): - It's a very cute old building. The owner, Jeff, was very kind, helpful, and flexible. It was close to everything in town. The room was beautiful and comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel and would love to stay there again when in Haines.
- Geoff (8/5): - This is a great historic property. The old buildings are very well kept and clean. The check in clerk was very friendly and informative.
The views over the ocean a fantastic on a nice day. The deck areas or parade square are a nice place to have your coffee and enjoy the day.
It is far from chic or modern but thats what makes it unique.
- Javier (8/5): - I like the beauty of this old area and building.
- Roman (6/5): - There aren’t many options in Haines for an overnight stay. The property is historic and has tons of character, however it is in desperate need of some repairs.
The manager was outstanding!! He had immense knowledge of the local area to include dining options and areas to see during our short stay.
Overall, if you don’t have your standards high, it will be fine. It’s a great place for a night or two and offers a chance to stay in an historical property.
- Brian (8/5): - It would have been great to have food options there but apparently that is a thing of the past.
There is zero ambiance. While it is an old and charming hotel There is no possibility of interacting with any of the other guests. Just made it seem like I was the only person there.
Very kind attentive people innkeeper.
Good central location if that is important to you. It is one of several buildings that apparently were part of the fort seward housing and this one just happens to have been converted to a hotel
- Cocoa (10/5): - Great staff, beautiful view!
- Ruggero (8/5): - magica atmosphere in this Historical Building
- Aaron (10/5): - Great staff, great atmosphere, great stay
- Joseph (10/5): - This an an amazing older hotel. Loved my room with the interesting details of the hotel. Great views and really nice staff. I probably would have used their help more if I didn't have friends taking care of my trip. Would easily stay here again. Walking distance from a nice distillery, restaurant, and natural foods grocery store. Easy to get to the center by walking too.
- Sarah (10/5): One night in Haines - What a charming spot to spend a night. We (me, Trophy Husband) got off the Alaska Marine Hwy System (ferry) mid day and drove over to check out the hotel where we had reservations. Jeff greeted me and gave us some maps and suggestions of places to see while visiting. (Thank you Jeff, your suggestions were awesome!) Our room had an incredible view of the water and the beds were comfortable. This is a historic property so set your expectations appropriately. The bathrooms are small but adequate. There was a TV and mini fridge for us modern travelers. The best was how quiet this location was!
Pro tip: If you have multiple electric devices to charge, bring your own power strip. This saved us without resorting to use the outlet in the bathroom.
- William (10/5): - We enjoyed the elegant old-time ambiance of the room. And the spectacular mountain views out the tall windows. The host was amiable and helpful, including shuttling us in all the way from the ferry terminal.
- Leah (10/5): - I love this hotel and owner Jeff is always absolutely lovely and welcoming. I started staying here almost 20 years ago. Love this place and the historic setting of it.
- Joanne (10/5): - Love this unique property!
- Adriana (10/5): - Beautiful place! Convenient, clean, good value, great host. Highly recommend!😊I would stay here again!
- Peter (10/5): - Beautiful hotel inside and out. Historic. Great owner. Walk to eats. Tours will pick you up here.
- Ronald G (10/5): Best deal in town. - This lodging is the best in town. Clean, comfortable, and refurbished without losing its historical essence. Plus, the price is fair. We stay here whenever in town and we are not camping.
- Hope (10/5): - Historical and quaint. Comfortable and clean.
- Jon (8/5): Beautiful, Quiet,Views. - Great architecture from 1942.
Excellent location in Haines with view of the bay.
The building is being worked on and could use some updating. The bathrooms were very tight. Keep in mind these buildings were designed as Quarters for the officers in WW2. A fun experience.
- Linda (8/5): - Historical hotel. Person at the front desk very helpful.
- Ross (8/5): - Great location
- Jessica (10/5): - Property is historic so expect old century charm. Our building had a porch, our room was a decent size with fridge, tv, and clawfoot bath. Great location!
- Sharon (10/5): - Quiet, historic hotel and setting. Much more enjoyable than a typical sterile hotel/motel.
- Jennifer (10/5): - We loved this property! They thoughtfully updated the historical rooms, the room was nice and cozy, but also roomy. There is a historical walking tour that you can take yourself on, on the grounds. Gorgeous view of the bay from the room and property.
- Marc (10/5): - -
- Kirklin (8/5): - Older, but maintained. There was signs of active remodeling and refurbishing. The property is similar to all other structures in the vicinity: dated, well maintained, limited resources to keep current
- Kelly (8/5): - Location great. Staff great.
Hotel is dated but kept clean! It is like a piece of history there.
We really enjoyed our stay here!
Would definitely stay again.
- Vicki (10/5): - The vibe is historical with a fireplace in our room and a footed bath tub. The host found us a place to eat when we arrived late.
- Diane (4/5): - Unfortunately this property has seen far better days, 75 years ago, and will never be what it was without millions in investment.
- Jane (6/5): - Room sparse little decoration lots old wires out the side door. Railing coming apart. Sure it’s an old building but clean up the wires and make the railing safe and brighten up the room with some posters.
- Bill (8/5): - It's an old hotel. And the owners are working on fixing it. The place is clean and convenient. It was way too expensive for what you get but then it was tourist season.
- Tina (10/5): - Loved its historical vibe!
- John (10/5): - Some might say this hotel is a little run down, but remember you are staying in a hotel that used to house the captain of the US army in the 1930;s. It has GREAT character and history (even a pay phone inside!) and the rooms are comfy and clean if a little dated. Ten minute walk into town and a beautiful view of the mountains and harbour from the hotel.
- Dottie (10/5): - The place was very clean and comfortable! The staff was very nice and helpful! We were able to bring the dogs inside and they settled down right away!
- Betty (8/5): - Beautiful historic building. Owner/Operator excellent host who is very knowledgeable about the area.
- Troy (10/5): - Excellent stay! Loved the comfy bed and the shower was great! Vintage charm. The antique hotel was so cute. However, if you need sleek, modern and perfect, it’s probably not the place for you. The front desk staff were so nice, Alaskan hospitality at its best. We were arriving to the hotel in the middle of the night and they did everything to accommodate us. Thanks for a great stay!
- Stacy (8/5): - We requested a specific room and was accommodated without a problem. Front desk person was wonderful.
- Oriole (6/5): - Rooms in an old military installation , lots of character . Excellent location our room had a view over the harbour Basic facilities , no tea and coffee in room but there was downstairs
- Oriole (8/5): - Old style hotel
- Laura (10/5): - The hotel is historical and very cool! Beautiful setting, close to everything, loved doing the historical stroll. Hotel staff was very friendly and offered advice on things to see. It was worth it just staying in a building that was over 100 years old, living amidst so much history and in such a stunning setting!
- Sonya M (10/5): Historically significant beautiful hotel, Haines! - Fun stay in a historically significant beautiful hotel in Haines, AK! We enjoyed our stay in this comfortable hotel with friendly service. It's within walking distance of the Port Chilkoot Distillery and cute shops. For a lovely mead tasting, go downtown to the Three Northmen Meadery. Ask the front desk for any other suggestions - they are wonderful here!
- Douglas (10/5): - Large rooms in classic building. Great views and helpful staff.
- kyungae (10/5): - Attentive / responsive staff in person and by phone. Room was huge with a beautiful view. Great value - exceeded expectations.

- Mary (10/5): - It is an old type hotel and has all the qualities you would expect. The owner was an amazing person, kind, friendly, addressed issues we had with the room immediately. If I am ever back this way, I will stay here again.
- Rebecca (10/5): Great place for my pups and I - This was a great location, beautiful historical property and the gentleman at the desk was wonderful. It is nice and quiet with a great view. Across the way is a parade ground and quiet roads to walk my two small pups on. I willl be staying here again
- Tamara (10/5): - We arrived late. Check in was wuick.
Bring food if you are arriving late.
- Justin (10/5): - It's a cool historical site that is being repaired and rebuilt. There is lots of cool stuff to see with a short walk. Some food trucks with great food by the shore. If you are there on Monday, check out the Old Field Kitchen. Great location.
- Peggy (6/5): - Very basic and older property no real amenities
- Carol (10/5): - This is a very unique place to stay! The beds were comfortable and the showers were great so I was happy with my stay here.
- Lynda (6/5): - The only reason I’m not giving a better rating is that because of delays on our end including car breakdown, we did not reach the hotel till almost 11 PM and I left the next morning at 6 AM. But my daughter stated another night and she seemed to like it.
- Melinda (10/5): - Friendly staff. Older hotel with lots of character.

- Robert (10/5): - Very friendly staff and comfortable room located in Historic Fort Seward.
- Dameon (4/5): - Very dated and worn down. The staff was great but the room had stained ceiling tiles and an odd smell
- Melissa (10/5): Idyllic hospitality - Such a lovely spot with lovely people, full of hospitality, kindness and wonderful views. Walking distance to everywhere and management so helpful. We’ll be back!

- William (10/5): - Historical fort in Alaska and the staff is very helpful.
- Carmen (10/5): - Convenience and easy check in
- Ian (6/5): - The hotel is in a beautiful historic area and walking distance to the town Center.
I was disappointed that the bar and restaurant where no longer operating as they where pictured in the advertisement.
- Lawrie (6/5): - Hotel has potential but it needs a major upgrade. Also have more than one Kerig in the lobby for coffee, make some in some urns or put one in each room.
The guy at the desk was very personable.
- Lucretia (6/5): - Definitely an older hotel with all the old charm.
Beds super comfy; bedding was very nice.
- Brenda (10/5): - Historic place to stay in around Ft Seward. Quiet area, beautiful views and walkable to many shops and eat places in town. Good bed and great towels!

- Laurie (10/5): - Beautiful old building with stunning views and very helpful owner.
- Autumn (8/5): - The building is old, which adds character, but also shows its age in the bathrooms & the second room I stayed in smelled. Overall, beautiful property and location and historic charm.
- Christopher (8/5): - Our stay went very well and it was an excellent part of our stay and the history of Haines being at the Halsingland Hotel. I highly recommend staying here. Thank you Jeff.
- Sonya M (10/5): Fantastic stay in Homer! - We really enjoyed our stay here! It's in a historic building and within walking distance of the distillery and restaurants/shops. We look forward to staying here again!
- daniel (6/5): - It is like s big old empty house, neat and tidy but updated only as much as absolutely necessary. If you are looking for historical, this is it. 100 year old stuff is everywhere. The staff met us at the front desk for check in, after a RING camera on the counter signaled him, at his house I suspect. We did not see him or anyone else for the next 20 hours, including at checkout. The room was ok. The bathroom was very small but the sink and shower tub were fairly modern and got their job done. We slept well.
- Barnie (4/5): - There are no restaurant or bar services. No wifi. Property not as listed.
- julian (10/5): - We had a great time in Haines. Jeff was an excellent host, helpful and friendly in every way.
- Barry (8/5): - The manager went out of his way to help us with reservations for the Ferry Crossing.
