Guest Reviews
- Mark (8/5): Very good - Big comfy room with balcony view. Has elegant but mildly faded grandeur. We loved it. Access to location challenging but manageable.
- Asia (10/5): Exceptional - the man the was working there like a receptionist was incredible kind with us
- Nuwan (8/5): Very good - Need to improve on food quality
- Katie (10/5): Fabulous one night stay would have stayed longer if our itinerary allowed - Beautiful property! Huge room wit fantastic bed and amazing views from the balcony .
Easily accessible to town and botanical gardens.
Staff super friendly and so helpful organising tuk tuk Nothing
- Barry (7/5): A very enjoyable and slightly frustrating stay. - A beautiful and interesting house in a quiet location just outside Kandy. Lack of introduction information e.g. that evening meal was available just across the road. We arrived early evening and resorted to takeaway delivery not knowing a nice restaurant was next door. We upgraded to the suite and regretted it because the water pump was on the roof above our room and was very noisy every few minutes all through the day and night. Luckily we had ear plugs.
- Axel (9/5): Peace and quiet in serenity after busy days in Kandy - The host Leslie was a kind, gentle and attentive person. It was a beautiful house to return to after busy days exploring Kandy. Beautifully decorated, good hot water shower, very comfy bed, excellent views. Nothing. It’s a gem
- Caroline (5/5): Not what we had hoped for - We were looking for a place to finish our holiday in a little bit more luxury than our previous stops. Richmond House was pleasant but nothing special. Expensive for what we got. There was no food available at the hotel so we had to walk up alot of extremely steep steps to the neighbouring hotel for breakfast. The breakfast was extremely disappointing and definitely not worth the extra money. The toast was like cardboard, the eggs were solid and had clearly been cooked for a long time, the juice was orange squash, and there were tiny slivers of fruit brought right at the end.
- Sagar (9/5): Superb - Very spacious rooms.
The hospitality was good.
The view from the rooms was amazing.
- Philipp (10/5): Exceptional - Great place for a couple of days out of the busy city center. The Rooms are comfy and large with a stunning view from the balcony. Absolutely worth the way up the hill.
- Trish (10/5): Highly recommend as outside the bustle of the main town. - Host was amazing and extremely helpful.
Huge room with sitting area and balcony with lovely views.
Highly recommend.
- Indatissa (8/5): Very good - Ita a very calm place and bbeautiful place. No disturbances. Staff is very helpful. There is a reception desk open 24 hours which is good. Pool is clean. Food is very expensive. All meals. So suggest to get from outside. However they did allow to have the food we took from outside. That is a good attitude.
- Alex (8/5): Very good - The house is nice ..people great No breakfast in
the house
- Mina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alex (8/5): Very good - The staff we're exceptional and really made our stay memorable in Kandy. The location was beautiful and so was the hotel. The breakfast wasn't the best and egg and fruit were the only options. Little things like hand towels in the room. Plus no bath took away from the stay.
- Krishnan (9/5): Superb - The rooms were quite comfortable and the staff was co-operative and nice. The food can be improved.
- Dovilė (10/5): Great - Really good looking hotel with a good view. Was just what I was looking for.
- Akash (7/5): Good -
- Anil (9/5): Superb -
- Aliaksei (9/5): Superb -
- Eleanor (3/5): Misleading at best dishonest at worst….. - The view and building…. This hotel does not do what it says on the tin, with the description and photos bearing little and is some areas no resemblance to the actual hotel.
Facilities listed as available are in fact not available at the hotel. The terrace/bar/restaurant that is suggested as a nice place to unwind and enjoy the views, does not exist in The Richmond House Kandy hotel. Instead you are directed to the ghost town hotel the Cylon Breeze! If you want to enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine, you will be offered an ice cube to chill the room temperature beverage!
The rooms are filthy, with every surface coming with a free layer of dust and dead flies. There are also ants running over the surfaces. There is no mini bar but an empty mouldy fridge that you fill yourself! No hot water in the sink tap, and the shower, although hot, leaks so the drizzle of water goes everywhere.
Whilst the views and building are stunning that is where it begins and ends and if you are looking for somewhere to unwind after a long day this is not the place. There is literally nothing else in walking distance so without the facilities that are listed being available you really are stuck.
Also to note that WiFi doesn’t work in the rooms (as advertised) but only in the central reception area. Also there is glass panels around the room door so you have the light shining through from the main area at night.
The two staff left to run this place and deal with queries are very friendly but ineffective. They are quite simply out of their depth. It’s such a shame as we really wanted to like this place but what is advertised and what you think you are buying is not what you get. Don’t get me wrong I have no issues with bog standard but not when something else is being sold to you!
- 90 (9/5): Superb -
- Lizzie (9/5): Superb -
- Tom (8/5): Very good -
- Tsz (8/5): Very good -
- Arafat (9/5): If you want worth of money this is good. But have to know the distance from city & take food - Everything is good. Great view of the city. The hotel is so far from the town. So high on mountain. Wifi is not available. Food is not available.
- Kalyan (10/5): Exceptional - Room will be bigger than in the photos here.. the room was spacious for us and view was too good.!!The host was very kind and helpful.
- Adrianna (6/5): Very dated and spooky vibes place... - the view from the balcony was quite nice, also the walk down the hill on th sunny day was pretty. we didn't like ants in the room, the breakfast wasn't nice and the baby chair for our son was very dirty. we didn't finish the breakfast in the first day and refused to eat on the second although we paid for it. the building is old and dated and definitely need some investment. the rooms smell of damp and there is plenty of bugs and ants on the floor. the restaurant " up the steps" is a very strange place with very inexperienced staff that can't speak English therefore very difficult to communicate even about a glass of water or bill!
- Pratik (8/5): Budgeted Stay at Kandy - Good stay at a good rate. Hotel is located at a hill so might be a challenge if you wish to visit city at the evening hours for getting some stuff. they have a sister hotel for serving breakfast and dinner if required where vegetarian options were quite limited. Overall with the budget we had set for the price at which we stayed was ok. Lighting at the hotel could be improved as well as breakfast and dinner options can be looked into.
- Morrison (7/5): Kandy overnight stay - Liked the old world vibe in hotel / rooms- no restaurant in the premises, but breakfast/ dinner available @ sister hotel across the road. Location a bit out of the way, very hilly...would need some transport unless very fit!
- Jenny (9/5): Beautiful location and room with friendly staff - Loved the location - up in the cooler hills, beautiful mountain view, a short tuk tuk ride to the city. Lesley was a wonderful host. The room was large and very comfortable. No wifi in the room. Could only access wifi in the foyer areas and not in the room
- Holly (10/5): Beautiful accommodation with the most amazing view! Rooms were so spacious and cool. - Beautiful accommodation with the most amazing view! Rooms were so spacious and cool. Nothing
- Ambuja (10/5): Exceptional - Such a beautiful property in the middle of the mountains
- Sue (9/5): Superb -
- Maneesha (9/5): Perfect stay - It was an amazing location - views were superb! The room was big and spacious, and the staff there were very friendly and helpful. The bed was so comfy and huge - really worth the price. Definitely recommend this place and will be back again! Only point to take note is that it is difficult to get there as it is a hill area but it is so worth it for the amazing views :)
- Bimal (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jose (10/5): Media Recommend - Everything U
You
- Alice (9/5): Beautiful. Would recommend - The staff were so lovely. It’s In a beautiful spot, and can hear prayers from the city in the morning, views are amazing. It’s a little outside of town but the staff organised tuk tuks for us to pick us up who were also so lovely and helpful.
Such a lovely experience would come back again.
In a busy city this is a lovely spot to feel more relaxed, but still be close enough to explore.
Facilities were great and very clean. It was a little bit hard for our driver to initially find the accomodation, but he called the hotel and quickly found it.
Booking an Uber yourself was tricky as it’s just a little bit out of town, but if you get the staff to help, it was super quick.
- Jeewan (6/5): Pleasant -
- Denise (5/5): Passable -
- Pablo (10/5): Great..like at home - Atmosphere Nothing
- Onur (8/5): Very good -
- Ronald (8/5): Our room was spacious and comfortable with a great view. The hosts were friendly and helpful. -
- Fernando (9/5): Superb - Staff NA
- Natalia (9/5): Superb -
- Dilusha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bronte (10/5): Lovely family run business and excellent hotel - Big spacious room.
Great view Little far out of the city
- Kamila (5/5): It’s ok but no wow - The old/young man
Big rooms Furniture really old (needs some oil for sneaky sound) - no air circulation- bad internet -
- Justin (10/5): Exceptional - Seanary was amazing. The host very nice and helpful.
- Adrian (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic location, the welcome is second to none and the caretaker, Leslie, an absolute gentleman N/a
- Fiona (10/5): Friendly hosts, beautiful spacious room with beautiful view from balcony - Location was a little out of town but it meant that it was quiet and the walk down to town was easy and fun. Little bit of a strangely uncertain vibe as it has recently opened no other guests were there so it felt a little eerie but the room was great and the views were amazing
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christian (8/5): Nice colonial style villa with awesome view - On the first sight the place looks amazing!
Entering through the big main entrance you are standing the big foyer with very tasteful furnishings! To both sides you find a staircase which goes up to a balcony from which you look down into the lobby. From there you enter the rooms.
The rooms are furnished in the same style as the lobby. The view was excellent and breathtaking (if the weather is in your favour...). Bathroom was also good!
Now to the down side - on the second sight you can clearly see that this place is not well maintained anymore. In corners and on surfaces you might find some dust and some other places are also in desperate need of love...it seems that the place was build with quality in mind but then not maintained anymore.
The host was an elderly guy (maybe that's part of the reason) who was very friendly and at least tried his best!
Should you book this place? For us it was a nice stay and we 100% recommend!
We loved the colonial style of the house. It's a pity that this place seemingly lags visitors and therefore income to properly maintain the place. On second sight you see the lag of investment into this lovely place!
- Ramdial (10/5): Wonderful Hotel! - I was there for the first ten days in March, 2020 and really enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and warm hospitality by the staff and owners. Would definitely return!
- Vincent (10/5): - Very nice colonial style hotel. Stunning view behind on the top of the hill. Very calm which is nice since Kandy is noisy. Room are decorated with style. Bed is confortable. Very warm welcome and service with a lots of support to organize my day.
Breakfast a bit light and not diversified and the hotel is obviously far from city center.
- Michael (10/5): Great Choice in Kandy - Wonderful rooms and hospitality overlooking the city. Would highly recommend. The hotel manager was fantastic and very accommodating. Meals were good.
We were a large party and had much of the hotel to ourselves in the main building (there is another across the street).
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): - All rooms had balconies with a pleasant view. We saw lots of monkeys frolicking on the roofs of adjacent buildings. Not much in the way of grounds or other facilities but the lobby was comfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A beautiful house with stunning views over Kandy. We were welcomed by the lovely staff and served a fabulous meal.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - High above town, amazing view,
Private,
Great chef, best tomato soup ever.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Richmond House was one of the best venues we stayed at during our visit to Sri Lanka. The staff was wonderful and made sure we saw what we wanted to see during our stay. We were able to book the car and driver while we stayed and he went above and beyond in getting us to our next destination. Very beautiful and worth every penny we spent- and very reasonable in prices. Fabulous experience and recommend the establishment to anyone wishing to stay in Kandy.
- michael (10/5): Great place but little out of the way - Lovely room with great views of Kandy. Excellent food with friendly staff. Only problem is steep narrow road to hotel and bit out of the way. We had a driver with car so was OK
- Simon (10/5): A grand old building indeed! - Great view of Kandy and the surrounding mountains from the balcony. A little tired looking overall but still a nice and interesting building. Very comfy beds. We enjoyed the buffet breakfast and also had a nice dinner there one evening. A bit of a mission getting up and down the hill but we were in a car so it wasn’t a problem for us. Staff were very attentive and friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Trevligt och vänlig service - Mysigt hotell uppe på Richmond hill, inte state of the art men trevlig personal och fina rum.
- Mark (8/5): Great option is staying in Kandy - Large spacious rooms and very friendly staff. We got a free upgrade to a suite which was huge and had spectacular views over the valley in Kandy.
The room had everything needed and was very comfortable.
Good selection at breakfast with staff always on hand to assist.
Very close to Kandy so handy for trips around the area.
- Kesavan (8/5): Needs a little bit more tlc, the rooms - It was a great location and staff are friendly and helpful. There are things to be refined in the rooms, needs a little bit of maintenance. Overall good 😊
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very charming hotel with wonderful staff
Breakfast was expansive and good quality
- chris (10/5): Beautiful view over the valley. A great hotel. - This is a beautiful property. Well maintained and tastefully decorated.
Service was excellent and friendly. Noting too much trouble.
Dining room was well staffed and food was average.
- Ross (8/5): Nice hotel up in the hills - We enjoyed our stay in this hotel which has a lovely view over Kandy. It’s a bit hard to get to, but OK by tuk tuk or car. It would be a long walk into town and an extreme climb back. The staff were very friendly and always trying to please.
- Dag (6/5): - scenic view in calm environment, good wifi, hotel doesnt serve alcohol, staff speaks very poorly English except the lobby mgr. food in general poor
staff very friendly, to pay extra charges not possible with creditcard
- jyoti (8/5): Lovely views, excellent staff - A boutique hotel with a colonial touch. The hotel is located in a residential area on a hill, a short tuk tuk ride away from the city. Nuwan from the hotel emailed me confirming the booking and the directions to the hotel. The staff is very courteous and helpful and communicated with just manageable English. The room was spacious, clean and had a lovely view of the hills, especially the morning fog/ mist and the evening setting sun. The room has a refrigerator and tea/coffee kettle, the TV had more than 100 channels and wifi was good. The bed was comfortable. Considering the secluded location, we had opted for half board. The food was average but the service exceptional. Will recommend it for people who want a bit of solitude yet stay near the city.
- Christopher (10/5): great stay! love this hotel! - beautiful hotel, lovely food, room was very nice and great view from the balcony over kandy. we had a great stay and would definitely go back. also had a room for our driver!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful hotel with a gorgeous view - Beautiful hotel with a gorgeous view at a great value -- no complaints!
- Avik (8/5): Fabulous interiors and magnificient view. - The hotel itself is hard to get to since it's on a really narrow winding hill road. However , the views from the balcony are completely spectacular ( we had 2 suites) . It came with breakfast and dinner included and both were fairly standard. Wifi was weak to the point of not working , in the suites. The rooms and bathrooms were completely massive and filled with gorgeous furniture. Highly recommend this hotel for the grand experience. Price was fairly reasonable too for the suites. We did have to kill one spider in the bathroom but as seasoned travelers it didn't affect us too much :)
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely views up a windy track - Great staff, lovely views over landscape, half board gave us a super buffet , tuk tuk ride down into town a good experience
- Damian (10/5): Kandy - Amazing stay with very friendly hosts !! Highly recommended..
- Don (10/5): Amazing view from the room - Amazing hotel. Very friendly staff
- Christine (10/5): Can't fault it - Amazing view and spotless with comfy beds. Attentive staff. Generous breakfast. Can't fault the hotel. However it is quite high in the hills requiring an exciting tuk tuk ride to and fro
- Mimi (8/5): Hillside KANDY - Great building and furnishings, comfortable room and seating, loved the mossie net. Be prepared for bumpy ride to hotel. Buffet dinner slightly disappointing, buffet breakfast same. Staff smilingly helpful.
- Mona (10/5): Paradise in Kandy - Wonderful 2 days! We were surprised by an upgrade when checking in. The room was gorgeous, quiet, lovely view from the balcony. The staff is exceptional. It is away from the town, in a quiet neighborhood. Breakfast is very nice, as a set meal or buffet. Dinner buffet was a great variety of dishes, and dessert. We didn't want to leave!
- bryan (10/5): Stay in Richmond hotel - Staff were very good and we'll coming. Lovely Views. Good stay
- Veronica (10/5): Fantastic - It was just great, exceeded our expectations!!!!
- Catalin (8/5): Short stay in Kandy - We stayed 4 days. Hotel is on top of a hill and a bit difficult to find or get to the centre of the city but the location is in a beautiful surrounding and the view over Kandy from here are excellent. The room we booked was stunning end we even had a small garden. Food and staff at this hotel are excellent. You can arrange trips from the hotel although this will be a more expensive option than trying to arrange tours from other places in the city.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great view, lovely Staff and something different - Hotel staff were lovely and dropped us in town everyday as it's difficult to get a tuk tuk up in the hills.
The whole place does feel a bit colonial and dated but if you're looking for something different then it's great.
We got upgraded to the queens suite which had a beautiful terrace and was huge.
Breakfast was ok and you have a choice of what you want.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great old hotel, but needs some serious upgrading - The hotel is set up on a hill, it is a rambling old colonial building- which is why we booked.
The staff are all lovely there and the manager is very helpful.
However- the place is crumbling, the windows look like they haven't been cleaned for at least 10 years. I think the money is being spent on the new hotel being built by the same people next door.Such a shame really as with a little TLC the place could really shine again!
- Roxanne (10/5): Manor House feel - Lovely old mane house feel. Huge rooms with everything provided including toiletries tv ac bottled water etc. Staff very friendly. Location is hard to find especially in the dark. No shops etc near. Ten min tuktuk into town. Lovely views.
- ST (8/5): Very nice hotel on a hill -
The manager of the hotel did not receive travel voucher for our stay from Expedia and insisted we call Expedia. Guests should not be disturbed as it entirely between the hotel and the Expedia to sort out the issues
Apart from this issue our stay was excellent and the hotel staff and the manager were very helpful and nice.
- Tara (10/5): Great value for money - Great place, great view, great staff, great food. We stayed for one night and paid £32 inc breakfast. Fantastic view as you are up high. We eat at the hotel but you could get a tuk tuk into Kandy for £2. Would recommend the place, it's a bit different and very friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely place.. comfortable stay, great views.
- Abhimanyu (8/5): Pure value for money - The hotel is pure value for money. The queen suite has two beds, Victorian architecture, private garden. Service is lacking in some respects. But the service people are nice. Location of the property is perfect
- MH (6/5): Nice view but some kms away from the Center - Vere nice hotel staff, big rooms. The building has lots of nice details. Unfortunately a bit outside of kandy -> suitable for People with driver or car. The bathroom was not 100% clean but ok.
The dinner and breakfast was just great and srilankian!!
- Paul (10/5): Beautiful location in the hills above Kandy - The Richmond House staff were so friendly, very helpful and made us feel totally at home. I wouldn't hestitate to recommend their place to any friends visiting Kandy in the future.
- Rich (8/5): Very homely hotel with excellent, friendly staff. - We stayed at Richmond House Kandy for one night as part of our honeymoon. As expected this is a converted old house and has a lot of character, however the bathroom needed some attention as it was very worn out!
- Tarsem (Sonia) (10/5): nice and quite place to stay - My friends and I ( 3 in total) has a great stay at Richmond house, the hotel is ran by family members staff .. very friendly service , the location is far from down town Kandy and it takes around 15 minutes to get to anywhere .... this place is great for someone who is looking for quite time ... overall we had two amazing stay.....
- Verified traveler (8/5): Overall great - Great view of Kandy from above, great staff - very friendly and accomodative
- Satchi (10/5): Tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle - We loved our stay here. The hotel is based up in the hills so if you want a central hotel in Kandy, this is not the one for you. However, for us it was great to chill and watch the sun set each night with great views away from the noises hustle and bustle. It's also easy to get in to Kandy on a tuk tuk.
We had a suite and stayed half bored. Our room was huge and really lovely - big balcony, comfy bed and separate sitting area. Some areas were a little worn in places but nothing that was of major concern.
The Sri Lankan food was particularly good - especially the vegetable curries (we are both firm meat-eaters!). The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Overall, a great place to stay and I'd happily stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Superb hotel with splendid views - Great hotel in the hills, beautiful views. Difficult to get to so best have the address handy to give to a TUK TUK driver but it's a fantastic isolated location not too far from the centre by car.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great views, good value for money - This hotel is up on one of the hills surrounding kandy, so it's a bit quieter and cooler than being more central. Our room and balcony had gorgeous views over the town. The staff are lovely too
