Service was really good.
People was so great.
Good food, Good People, Good Hotel
- jias001 (10/5): Tonga really is the friendly islands - I stayed at Tanoa for four nights in March 2026 and would highly recommend it. The rooms are clean, the food is good, and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. My initial room was quite noisy due to its location and when I requested to move Gnani (sp?) was so very accommodating and helpful, even showing me the new room before I moved. The breakfast buffet had a a decent selection with some local fruits and baked goods in addition to the usual hot items, but what made me look forward to it every day was the staff - always smiling and even teaching us a few words - Too Low! Thank you for making my first trip to Tonga a memorable one; I hope to come back again soon!

- Nukonuka (7/5): nice - close to town and great aircon it's too expensive
- Sally (8/5): Comfortable and convenient hotel with friendly staff - Friendly service, comfortable room and bed. Great location close to everything. Nice food. Nothing! Its a great hotel to stay at when in Tonga.
- Priscilla (8/5): -
- Silivenusi (10/5): Perfect - Clean and quiet Nil
- WorldWideTravel88 (8/5): Decent Hotel Except for Mold in Shower - I don't think there are hotel chains anywhere in Tonga and from what I investigated this hotel is supposed to be the best hotel in the country. For an independent hotel it could have been worse. The bed was clean and comfortable, the air conditioning worked well, the breakfast was not boring (rice, spaghetti, stir fried veggies), they grow some of their own food on site, the shuttle bus to/from the airport was prompt, the hotel has a gym, a decent pool, etc. But still, I can rarely shake the feeling of independent hotels being below the level of even the lowest international brands like Four Points, Hilton Garden Inn, etc. I did not see staffing problems during our stay but they don’t serve outside guests as per the sign at the entrance due to staff shortages. This worked in our favor because the hotel was quiet. But the mold in the shower definitely gave a yucky feeling. The shower floor was clean but not the walls.
I paid 235 USD per night including breakfast and it’s low season, I wonder how expensive this hotel gets. I understand corporate guests paying whatever they ask but for tourism we got far more for half that price at InterContinental Fiji nearby in the subsequent days and Fiji is not exactly known to be a cheap destination. So this is part of why Tonga does not get tourists, the value proposition is simply not there. I enjoy variety of travel and new places but independent hotels are part of what holds me back. It’s a cloud on an otherwise fun experience.
I guess if I returned to Tonga I would probably pick this hotel again despite the comments above.
- Howard (8/5): Probably the best place to stay in all of Tonga. - Super friendly The food was very ordinary
- LYNCH (10/5): It was paradise - The breakfast and pool No designated smoking area
- Akesa (9/5): I enjoyed my stay despite the sheets and towels having stains on them. I would love to see more Tongan fruits for breakf - Location, staff was friendly. Sheets and towels has stains on it.
- Taketoshi (7/5): - ロケーションが良い。 やはり、値段の割には、もう少し。

Tanoa Hotel is the best in Tonga!
Nothing beats Tanoa Hotel when it comes to accommodation, amenities, food, everything is just perfect!! All the staff are very warm, they will always clean your room and make sure that everything is in place. So when you visit Tonga, there's no other place to stay but Tanoa Hotel!
Malo!
- Alison (7/5): A secure and predictable range of services - I found accommodation very suitable but was surprised at how expensive it was. Perhaps that was Booking.com charges. When I tried to book directly your web site suggested you were booked out. The cost was one of the most expensive nightly charges I have ever paid. It will be nice when the building next door is finished.
- Zydenbos (8/5): We really felt at home here, the staff were so friendly and went out of their way to help. Chanel was the best breakfast - Central for walking to Nukualofa and accessing main cafes, markets, food shops etc.
- Samiuela (7/5): Awsome with friendly people, nice breakfast - Breakfast is perfect, location is Awsome...
service need upgrade. The information has to be the same
- Lakei (9/5): Even with the minor inconveniences, overall we had an excellent stay thanks to your amazing staff! - Breakfast was outstanding, staff was very friendly and helpful, on-site concerts and crafts were amazing, parking was great. We ordered a King room but instead got a bed made of 2 single beds pushed together. Washing machines were broken, very costly and no laundry detergent available.
Everything else was absolutely wonderful.
- Wendy (10/5): Would totally recommned the Tanoa to anyone wanting to stay. - The Tanoa exceeded our expectations. Staff were so helpful.
- Talanoa (2/5): Staff very well helpful just rooms are very uncomfortable bed sheet needs change - Best location breakfast staff very well served me Beds very poor sheets poor furniture dirty walls dirty! Very poor room
- Mele (10/5): We had a great 6 days here and will definitely be coming back. Wish I made use of the bar and pool. Maybe next time - Comfortable, cosy, heart of town, staff are friendly, breakfast buffet. Quite costly but understandable for Tonga. Should be special deals every now and then to make it affordable for tourists who are on a budget. Laundry room was far away from my room but that’s about it.

- Diane (10/5): Relaxing and enjoyable - Location, pool, staff, food Nothing
- Ma'u (9/5): A very enjoyable and comfortable stay with amazing views and plenty to do around the area. - I enjoyed the air-conditioning in the room, especially after returning from a day out in the hot Tongan air. I liked the cleanliness of the room, the toiletries provided in the bathroom, as well as the tea & coffee station with a kettle and fridge. I also liked the convenience of having a restaurant accessible just downstairs right next to the pool. I think maybe providing disposable toothbrushes could be something that makes Tanoa stand out just a little bit more. I also wish there was a designated and bigger parking lot for guests travelling from overseas to park their cars and have peace of mind knowing that their car is in a safe space. I also wish that there were more food options to choose from during breakfast.

- Sela (5/5): More improvement - Friendly staff, Clean & Tidy Balcony lock was broken so i didn't feel safe.
Air conditioning was not strong enough to the amount being paid to live there it needs more improvement.

The place was filthy, dirty, dated and so over priced. Also had two police officers located down the corridor blasting there phones youtube all night.
Did not even sleep in the bed or use the pillows, given there was hair from the last occupant throughout.
Avoid this place at all costs!!

- Lupeaka (10/5): Relaxing - Food was good Pool water is warm
- S.Juliette (8/5): The staff were helpful and warm. Thanks too for them wonderful breakfast, especially the young Fijian worker at breakfa - Location. No room service. No face cloths!
- Mark (7/5): - Staff very good. Enjoyed pool and closeness to sea. Very expensive for room type
- Evanjica (3/5): Dont waste your money here, the experience almost ruined my stay in Tonga. - it had free wifi The entire experience was terrible, the hotel staff were not welcoming or hospitable. We booked with Booking.com but when we arrived they claimed my credit card had declined & told us they would wait for the manager to come sort it & checked us in. When we got there, the room they gave us was nothing like the room we had booked. We went back down to reception & after a lot of back & forth they moved us to the room we had booked.
When we got to the new room initially is was great, but then we noticed the towels were stained, the edges frayed, the bathroom amenities looked like they had been tossed on the corner of the counter, not placed nicely. Also there was 2 of us staying & there was only 2 towels and a floor mat. No hand towels or face clothes, & the extractor fan wasn't working well.
Every morning around 8am a truck came & emptied the septic tank which was right outside our window, it stank so bad & made a loud noise. On the first morning when they had finished they disconnect the pump & left the septic tank wide open, the smell was so bad we had to leave the room. They say there's free parking but they dont give you clear directions to the car park & theres no signage. Also its first come first serve. The car park is small & in a very horrible dark & dusty part of the Hotel.
On the 2nd day we were there they asked us to settle the bill & tried to charge us $1000TOP more than the price quoted. The lady took my phone to show the manager but she still tried to argue saying the room they gave us was an upgrade & that the room we were staying in was $800-900TOP a night which is ludicrous. Eventually she charged the price quoted on booking.com then she slapped on some extra charges, at this point I had had enough so i just paid.
We wanted to host 17 dinner guests and asked if 5 of them were able to use the pool and were told no, even though we would be spend close to $2000TOP on dinner.
- Mavaetau (10/5): Thank you Tanoa! - I loved the layout of the hotel. Very open and spacious, allowing for Tonga's cool breeze to circulate through. We appreciated the kids shallow pool! Perfect for our little ones.
Staff were friendly and very helpful! We needed an extra bed for our toddler, and they upgraded us to a bigger room to accommodate our needs. Our first family trip to Tonga and we're very grateful to the staff for looking after us!
Malo 'aupito! It would have been great if they hosted an island/cultural show during the week :)

- melpY4823PJ (10/5): Thank you - Malo aupito Cassandra and Team! - My stay at the Tanoa Hotel in Tonga was made truly memorable thanks to the exceptional service provided by Cassandra. While there were a few minor issues during our stay, I wouldn’t deduct any stars—Cassandra and her team were on top of everything immediately, resolving matters efficiently and with genuine care.
Throughout my travels, I’ve rarely come across someone who is as passionate about their role as Cassandra. Her dedication, professionalism, and warm hospitality made all the difference. It’s clear she not only takes pride in her work but genuinely cares about the experience of each guest.
Tanoa Hotel is lucky to have her, and so were we. Thank you, Cassandra, for making our time in Tonga so special!

- Fiona (8/5): Lovely and comfortable. - The location is great and the facilities are lovely. The staff are friendly & helpful and everything was very clean. The pool area is really nice. The menu at the restaurant is limited and doesn’t have many smaller/lunch options.
The pool was also monopolized by loud children quite a lot so it would be nice to have a time slot each day when the pool is kid free so the adults can enjoy it.
- Evelyn (8/5): - The most well established and largest hotel in Tonga, with a great location on the waterfront just near the heart of Nuku’Alofa - with easy access to restaurants, shops, the central market, the palace and offices. The hotel has a pool and a restaurant, but the menu is very limited and the lobby bar was not open when I was there. My oceanfront room was pretty good, but not that spacious for the high price, there was no comfortable lounge chair and noise drifted up from events downstairs. Staff were friendly and kind - but there need to be more of them to support the high number of guests and functions.
- Joanna (4/5): - Disappointed and Underdelivered – Not Worth the Price
For the price point, Tanoa did not meet the expectations set by its marketing. Upon arrival, there was no assistance with luggage—something you might reasonably expect from a hotel in this category. Check-in was disorganized; I had to ask for my room key, the guys seemed like he wasn’t bothered to explain anything.
The room itself left much to be desired. The bed sheets were stained, and several power outlets didn’t work. Amenities were minimal—limited to body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Towels were never provided proactively; I had to request them daily. On two occasions, I even had to ask for toilet paper. Noise was also a serious issue—one night I was startled awake by a loud argument from a neighboring room due to the paper-thin walls.
The in-room TV didn’t work, seemingly relying on internet streaming, yet no basic aerial channels were available. This limited even the simplest in-room entertainment.
Breakfast offerings were basic and repetitive—eggs, bacon, tinned spaghetti, fried rice, sausages, bread, and a small fruit selection. I also ordered a coffee from the café that never arrived.
There is no room service available, which means guests have no choice but to queue at the restaurant—even just to order a slice of cake. Staff were visibly overwhelmed, trying to meet demand. Pricing was also excessive: $9 for a can of Coke and $23 for a slice of cheesecake.
While the experience was disappointing, I believ
- Hannah (9/5): Clean, comfortable and relaxing island stay! - We loved the staff! First and foremost they went out of their way to ensure our comfort and were very accommodating when we had changes to make.
We loved the ocean view rooms and the spacious suite. We loved being able to come back to hotel and into clean rooms.
They have great pools and poolside service food and drinks service.
Location is close to swim or snorkel in ocean at end of the walkway. Nice evening or early morning stroll along the waterfront.
We loved the food gardens, something special eating a salad you see the chef picking from the garden! While it isn’t a 5* you may expect in more developed nations. It is by pacific standards.
They do all they can to ensure a high international standard.
There is road noise but you will get that anywhere while staying in Nuku’alofa..
It’s worth upgrading to the ocean rooms. We had to stay in the standard rooms unexpectedly as our flights were cancelled. And our stay in the ocean view rooms at the end of our trip felt exceptionally better.
- Anna (2/5): - My husband and 11 month old daughter checked in only to come in to our room given away. They gave me a credit for food and beverage use only, but did not use f&b as we were only there for one night. If any hotel does this just refund the room rate. Wasted my $350 usd on this hotel, therefor deserved a 1 star.
- Sullivan (9/5): - pool view
- Sione (10/5): - Always love the vibe at Tanoa
- Adam (10/5): - Relaxing week's stay at Tanoa International Dateline Hotel; loved the mid-winter warmth - along with the friendly Tongan service throughout the hotel. Large rooms, large swimming pool, good wifi, plus a decent breakfast buffet. Not flashy, just comfortable & enjoyable. Hallways are a little noisy/echo at night, FYA
- Niloofar (10/5): Excellent stay - We enjoyed our stay very much. The staff were absolutely wonderful. They were very attentive and very helpful. We were treated like family. Breakfast was great and the food at the restaurant was delicious. We were walking distance to the market and to the dive shop. Thank you everyone at Tanoa!
- Taketoshi (8/5): まあまあかなと思います。 -
- Mamaeroa (10/5): We LOVE TONGA Tanoa - Beautiful pool. Sustainable food gardens. Clean. Child friendly. Staff attentive especially with children. Laundry facilities great with kids. Excellent location. Secure A games room would be great. And Massage or spa facilities with facials and Beauty treatments. Perhaps hire out a space to a local provider
- David (8/5): Great location & Bircher breakfast - Good location, very good breakfast - Bircher muesli, wifi Noise concrete echo of other people during the night, gym was dirty - yoga mat & back corner not cleaned
- Crane (6/5): - Overpriced, but there are not many choices
- Dennis (8/5): - It was close to town. Had a swimming pool.
Needed more variety at breakfast.
Airport shuttle expensive.
Reception staff knew very little about things to do and see, and often gave wrong info.
- James (9/5): -
- Paul (7/5): Good not Great - The location is good and the facility certainly tidy enough. Staff were friendly and engaged. The property is dated and needs an update. While staff were good there was not enough of them. There was only one restaurant and bar open and while ok not a great selection and service struggles at times.
- Alisha (9/5): -
- Pang (10/5): - friendly staff, swimming pool if needed. Complimentary breakfast
- Chizzamerica (8/5): Fantastic week at the Tanoa Intl Dateline hotel - Had a really relaxing stay here; great pool area to chill & unwind. Wifi was good for a spot of work. Breakfast was plentiful with friendly staff. Room was sizeable and nice views, and a comfy bed. Noise travels in the hallways, just to be conscious of. A 4% administration card fee on checkout was a disappointing way to end a stay however
- SHONA (4/5): - Moved to a room type o didn’t book. Staff very slow at fixing the situation. We were given a free drink when we suggested it. Understaffed and for the price rhe service and facilities were poor.
- SHONA (4/5): - Understaffed and for the price the facilities were very average. Bed was terrible.
- John (7/5): Beautiful friendly people. But I suspect that booking. Com may get the worst rooms - The room we had faced a noisy road and this spoiled our stay. See above
- Susan (6/5): - Disappointed with hotel. For the high room cost I expected good to very good quality experience. Bathroom not properly cleaned in two days (dead cochroaches under vanity unit), cabinet door for refrigerator access wouldn't close properly. Rooms and hallways are tiled making any noise louder. Appears property maintainanxe not high priority.
- Мария (10/5): -
- EdMotion (4/5): No water in gym - They give you two bottles of water for the room a day and you have to use the same two bottles for the gym. There is no water in the gym. You are supposed to bring your own water. For a rather expensive hotel in town unacceptable.
Twice I asked them to give me a wake-up call, they said yes and promptly forgot. Service levels are really low.
- Claire (7/5): -
- Sarah (8/5): - Nice breakfast, good location, pool and really lovely staff. The dinner menu was a bit limited but what there was, was good.
- John (8/5): Comfortable, reasonable cost friendly staff - I had an ocean view and breakfast was very good Not much to do in town
- Natalie (10/5): - It's dated, but efficient. It was clean and safe. The staff are amazing and really made the experience.
- Gavinw8888 (8/5): Great stay - Nicest hotel in Tongatapu with great service. Rooms seem like they were updated but the food wasn't anything special. Service was great and they were very friendly.
- Renier (7/5): Loved the stay. Staff were amazing.but did find it noisy at night and first thing in the morning - Location Very noisy
- Mika (10/5): - Staff were amazing would highly recommend for a stop over on the way to the other islands. Quick walk into the city as well.
- Tevita (10/5): -
- Experience610348 (8/5): Terrific Tanoa. We stayed before and after our whale trip to Hapai. The staff are great..food likewise. GM Jason tops.!! - The hotel is good for Samoa with very friendly staff. The restaurant is good and the meals are substantial, so we often shared one. Jason steers the ship well as the GM.
- Carl (8/5): -
- Мария (10/5): - Пожалуй самый лучший отель в этом городе! Удачное расположение, хорошие номера, достаточные завтраки, дружественный персонал! С удовольствием вернулась бы сюда снова
- Ryan (8/5): Very good -
- Ruby (10/5): a lovely stay - the folks here are so nice and welcoming and helpful. the breakfast was good, the rooms are air con and comfy. its walking distance to the wharf and to many restaurants and sights. recommend!
- Tipi (9/5): We should have booked 2 weeks, not one! - Great facilities & all staff were helpful. Didn't book long enough.
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Murray (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gordon (10/5): - good
- Ofeira (3/5): Very Disappointed 😞 - Location close to town I got bitten by bed bugs. Of all the hotels I've stayed in throughout the Pacific this was the first hotel that was the most uncomfortable to stay in and couldn't get a good sleep because of bed bugs. Lucky i had a cream for insect bites! First night I ordered room service and enjoyed the tempura sushi. My second night I couldn't get room service because the kitchen staff said guests were not allowed to get room service!!! Was very frustrated at this point. Also I kept asking for a face towel and hand towel the whole time I was there and was told I can't get these for some reason. Overall the price i paid for this hotel did not meet expectations.
- Anau (5/5): Passable -
- david (4/5): - This property is the best in tonga however to come into a room crawling with small cockroaches was a little dissapointing, the bedding was clean and changed whenever requested, yhe pool was excellent, the breakfast offered variety of choice , with excellent staff
- Bruce (3/5): reasonable as not many choices - location noisy at night, seemed to be obsessed with floor cleaning at 4am. restaurant limited choices and poor value, drinks over priced, breakfast lacks variety
- Malianive (10/5): - Hotel is close to shopping, market, restaurant etc…very clean, very friendly and so accommodating to our needs.
- sally (10/5): - Lovely, friendly and helpful staff
- Tandi (8/5): - Most convenient and pleasant place to stay, Tonga does not have great options. Room and bathroom were a decent size. Nice staff
- Carolyn (8/5): Good option for an overnight stay on Tonga tapu - Ideal location within walking distance of restaurants and market.
Lovely pool and excellent breakfast. Lack of vegetarian options on menu.
- Girum (8/5): Very good -
- Howard (10/5): Great as an overnight before flying off to another island - Staff were very helpful and VG breakfast
