- Lottie (10/5): - Staff were outstanding, breakfast was amazing with a beautiful location, the comfiest bed ever!
- Jessica (8/5): Lovely comfy room close to great walks - Staff were friendly, food was excellent. Room was a good size, bed was comfy and the place was very clean.
- MALCOLM (9/5): Very nice would stay again. - Great location. Very clean , excellent food and very welcoming hosts. Had a small problem with one of the rooms but was sorted out efficiently. Nothing really
- Trevor (8/5): Has a lot to offer - Lovely location in a quiet village, wonderful walks nearby and dramatic scenery. Great breakfast and friendly hosts. Two local pubs and a fish and chip shop in the village. Restaurant in the guesthouse There is no guest parking so we had to park in the nearby village carpark. This costs £16 per day but you can purchase a 4 day permit for £20 from North Devon District Council which can be used in other carparks too.
I made the mistake of booking a room with a double bed for two of us which meant we did not sleep very well. King size would have been better
- Joanna (10/5): Memorable stay, can't wait to return. - Stacey and Will were very accommodating. The whole place is amazingly decorated, comfortable and warm. The room was lovely, comfortable and well laid out. The breakfast is exceptional and served professionally. Love the family feel and having a dog on site to greet you is a joy. Nothing

I totally recommend 'The Smugglers Rest' in Morthoe for its perfect location for visiting the main attractions in north Devon but also the wonderful property and comfy rooms it has to offer. Great stop all round! J&N N/A
- Adrian (10/5): Fantastic stay. Exceeded all expectations. - What about incredible find. The Smugglers more than lived up to its 5* reviews .
Lovely warm welcome from the owners Will and Stacey. Room impeccably clean.
The food was absolutely excellent. My wife and I both think the evening meal we had in the Bistro and 2x breakfasts were the best food we've eaten out in ages. Beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Many thanks to everyone.
Please keep doing what you do. It's spot on! Nothing negative to report.

Nothing, very lucky find and our favorite place to stay, very quiet location.

- John (10/5): - Had a great stay at the Smugglers, room was comfy and beautifully decorated with some nice touches including a Nespresso machine (pods replaced daily)
Breakfast was exceptionally good, with great variety to choose from, all very well presented and tasty
Big shout out to Will and Stacey the owners, well done both and keep up the brilliant work ! Can't fault it !
- Angie (10/5): Great for both short amd longer stays. - Stacey & Will welcoming, friendly and super helpful. Went out of their way to help when we had forgotten to pack something we needed. Will organised our parking permit which made things alot easier on arriving.
Room very clean and extra comfy bed. Breakfast amazing, a lot of choice on the menu, set us up for the day. Location great 10 mins walk from Holiday Park where our young family were staying. Loved the welcoming we received from Kingsley on entering the building!
Thank you both (and Kingsley) for a lovely stay. Nothing not to like
- Kathrin (9/5): Excellent welcoming place with delicious food close to the SW coast path. - Charming very friendly, helpful, hospitable hosts. Convenient for walking the SW coast path with a local bus stop outside the door. Delicious wide choice for breakfast included and very good high quality but expensive dinner menu. Mortehoe is a lovely little village with 2 pubs, popular fish and chip shop, another take away restaurant and a small post office, no food store. Busy in the evenings with campsites close by. The ‘Lee’ was a small double room as advertised but much smaller than expected, very warm and slight disturbance from rooms above and next door.
- REGINALD (5/5): -
- Tina (10/5): -
- Julie (9/5): -
- Barbara (8/5): Lovely hotel, tiny room - Excellent breakfast
Location
Staff Very small room /bathroom
No wardrobe
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shane (10/5): Lovely B&B and great location - Lovely b&b friendly hosts , they make you very welcome .
Rooms great and the food is fantastic. Just a short walk into Woolacombe.
- Freeman (10/5): A very pleasant stay - A very good breakfast, a good variety, and better quality than many we have had.
- David (9/5): Superb - The Smugglers Rest is a very special place. We wanted to get away for a weekend and simply enjoy some time together in peace and quiet. We were warmly welcomed by Will right from the start and were able to check into a very cosy and stylish room straight away. At first we ate in other pubs, but were quickly won over by his wife's cooking skills. It starts with incredible mussels, continues with delicious seafood pasta and ends with an incredible chocolate fondant. The team at The Smugglers Rest simply knows how to make guests feel very comfortable and at the same time impress with high quality. Thank you for your time!
- Leigh (9/5): Loved our stay at Smugglers Rest. Will and Stacey made us feel so welcome and at home. Would highly recommend - Loved our stay at Smugglers Rest. Will and Stacey made us feel so welcome and at home. Would highly recommend
- Paula (10/5): Delightful boutique B&B in lovely village AND their restaurant is 5*! - Will and Stacey (and Kingsley the retriever!) welcome their guests very warmly to their delightful home, which soon feels like your home too. The room we had was enormous with a seating area as well as a spacious bathroom with bath and a huge shower. Extremely comfy bed, lots of hot water and a deeply peaceful night’s sleep.
The breakfast was delicious and we also ate on 2 evenings in the bistro - exceptionally good food and a chilled vibe. Be aware that the restaurant is not open every evening.
Mortehoe is a charming small village, though there are 2 pubs to choose from (not to mention the tea room which does the best cream tea ever!) and you can walk directly out onto the coast path in either direction. We saw seals and kestrels out near Morte Point - such a delight!
Woolacombe is just a short hop down the road with its 2 miles of sandy beach and there are numerous small coves for a swim too. Croyde and Ilfracombe within 20 minutes drive and we can recommend a boat trip to Lundy Island - we saw puffins as well as numerous seabirds. Car parking is directly over the road - just buy a 4 or 7 day pass.
We can’t wait to return to this little slice of heaven! Nothing! One small observation - we would have appreciated the offer of fruit / cereal for breakfast, but it has to be said that everything on the menu (pancakes / smoothie bowl / omelette / cooked breakfast) was top notch.
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely room (exmoor) and fantastic friendly hosts. Dinner was amazing, and the breakfast choice was really good.
Despite the heatwave outside the property remained a reasonable temperature Bed was a bit soft for my liking
- Tamsin (9/5): Superb - The breakfasts were amazing, and the hosts were very helpful.
- Sharon (10/5): Lovely stay - The owners Will and Stacey were so attentive and really helpful, they knew the area well and advised some good places to go to like Rosemoor and Croyde bay and which local pubs to go to. They definitely went above and beyond to make our stay lovely.
The info pack in the room was informative, breakfast was superb and we had dinner one night as well which exceeded our expectations. Would highly recommend this place as it was very reasonably priced for the area which meant we could stay here and we would definitely be going back sometime. Nothing as they provided an outstanding stay
- Steven (10/5): Relaxing stay in Mortehoe - Lovely couple than ran it. Accommodated early check in. Excellent pillows (strange to say it but true) Good breakfast/generous portions
- Michaela (9/5): This is a B&B like no other! - This is a B&B like no other. The welcome of the staff, the amenities in the room (real coffee, thank you so much) and the restaurant is amazing. This place feels so welcoming and homely from the moment you enter. A big thank you to the front manager who is the kindest person and full of good advice when it comes to visiting the area. And greetings to Kingsley, the dog you want to adopt ;-) A pity you have to pay extra for car park, but hey, there is worse in life.
- Ann (9/5): Superb - Fantastic food, best in the area.
- Henry (9/5): Excellent location, great host, great food - Wil is an excellent host, superb communication from the beginning, above average breakfast, and an exceptional evening meal we would highly recommend.
- Russel (8/5): Very good -
- Dean (9/5): Superb -
- Chloe (10/5): Two Night Stay - The Smugglers rest is in the perfect location for amazing views and only a short bus ride to Woolacombe beach. The hosts were lovely and the breakfast was exceptional. The room was cosy and stylish. N/A
- Mandy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (8/5): Very comfortable very relaxing and excellent breakfast - The layout was good the old and modern touches, and the Host .
- Gary (10/5): A great find - a real gem in the heart of north Devon! - Lovely location, beautiful room, excellent food and fantastic hosts.
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional - Very warm welcome and excellent service. A little difficult to make contact at time of booking but managed in the end. Hosts were incredible and very friendly. Thank you
- Philip (9/5): Very welcomeing lovely breakfast excellent location - Nearly everything Steep staircase room could have been bigger)
- Zoe (10/5): Exceptional - Stacey, Will and Kingsley were the super welcoming hosts!
Very comfortable bed and clean rooms, yummy breakfast, and great local knowledge. Would definitely recommend and stay again!
- Jatinder (10/5): Top Quality Stay - The breakfast menu was made to order but it was all fresh and cooked to perfection, me and my wife tried different items every day & could not find fault with anything,
The room was clean and all amenities (Tea, Nespresso coffee machine , Water, etc etc) were provided, the room was cleaned every day with no issues.
This place is an ideal base to visit the local area and enjoy the wonderful coastal views or join the coastal pathway to journey on further.
The proprietors of Smugglers Rest were amazing in their customer service & knowledge of the local area, our only disappointment for this trip was not having an evening meal in Miss Fea's Bistro which was highly recommended but due to planned day trips out did not happen.
I'm looking forward to returning to this location to see more of the local area and have dinner in Miss Fea's Bistro. Nothing.
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely room, comfortable bed, friendly helpful staff and an excellent breakfast. Nothing
- Carol (10/5): Fab - Fab Evening meals only available Wed to Sat

- Ian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hilary (9/5): Excellent we will be back and recommend to friends - We enjoyed the choice of breakfast which really was exceptional, atmosphere very good and great background music.
Kingsley the Labrador was adorable, I’ve yet to meet such a well behaved dog. Will was an excellent host, lots of good advice regarding the locale, happy to chat about our visit, directions for the bus services, organising a parking permit etc. The other staff we met were very friendly. The location in the centre of Mortehoe put us only yards away from two pubs, the post office and a fish and chip shop! The road down to Woolacombe was pretty steep but the bus only takes 10 minutes in either direction. The scenery along the coastline is spectacular, and Woolacombe beach as wonderful as it was when I visited as a child 60 years ago. Nothing
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Niall (10/5): a real gem - The unerringly helpful attitude of all the team, the well-thought-out room, the smashing food only staying two nights!
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - The room and on suite room were decorated to a very good standard, the bed was very comfortable. There were ample tea and coffee making facilities including fresh locally made biscuits every day, digital TV and good fast WiFi service, we had no difficulty streaming high definition video.
The breakfast was a real treat, making it a difficult choice each morning, for me the haddock omelette and the poached eggs, avocado on sourdough bread were the best! Parking is opposite in the Council owned car park, we bought a weeks county wide use ticket prior to arriving which saved all the hassle of buying tickets each day and was used in County car parks everywhere we visited. I can't think of anything! the owner, Will had a really good knowledge of the area, able to advise on walks , cycle trails, cycle hire, surfing and a host of other events and places to explore. I think the only downside was that our holiday break wasn't longer.
- Janette (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maureen (10/5): Exceptional, really exceeded all of our expectations. - The owners were wonderful hosts making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Food was exceptional, fresh local produce, cooked to perfection.Great village location with pubs and great walks. There was not anything not to like.
- Peter (9/5): We were made very welcome, and the food at breakfast and in the evening was excellent. - Very clean and well restored. Excellent location and excellent, friendly service. Restaurant also excellent. Decor a little dark for our taste. We are used to a larger bed, so may upgrade next time.
- Claire (10/5): Friendly, clean & great food! - Modern and Hip, family orientated. Great music & food. Was clean rooms and very friendly. Great walks. This is the second time staying! We will be staying again.
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ian (10/5): stunning find Morthoe village - Absolutely beautiful place in Morthoe village on the outskirts of Woolacoombe.
Stayed in bedroom Lee , very comfortable with amazing decor.
And then the breakfast to die for, will definitely be back!!!! Nothing at all
- Simon (10/5): Would use again when visiting the area, and would be my first choice - The room was very clean with fantastic decor. The bed was a super king and very comfortable. There was no noise from outside the room. Breakfast was to a very high standard with lots of choices, and extra tea and coffee if you wanted it. Possibly a small make-up table for my wife in the bedroom, however she managed without one.
- Del (9/5): Great stay in a lovely building. Definitely recommend - Lovely property. Paid more for a bigger room (Lundy). Bath and shower option suited us. Breakfast was excellent and the owners were nice. Our bed was really comfortable but extremely soft, not good if you have a bad back. Choose a lower price for a room with a more supportive mattress.
- Simon (8/5): Enjoyed our stay and would return - Pleasant stay, hosts and staff were very helpful and friendly, breakfast was delicious great choice and value for moneyv No complaints
- Carolyn (8/5): Very good - Great location, friendly, good breakfast
- Linda (10/5): Accomodation, service excellent - Breakfast was really special the choices offered we would never have at home. A real holiday treat I can truely say there was nothing we didn't like
- Sian (10/5): Thanks again for a wonderful short break, we will be returning! - We absolutely love staying at the Smuggler's rest. The location is perfect for us, the room is really luxurious, food is lovely and we feel very well looked after when we're there. Nothing at all.
- Elspeth (9/5): An extremely enjoyable stay at The Smugglers Rest, Mortehoe. - We were greeted warmly by Will the owner on arrival at The Smugglers Rest. We stayed overnight in the Hartland room which was extremely comfortable and spacious with a luxury en suite bathroom. We enjoyed an extremely delicious meal in the evening at Miss Fea’s Bistro, the on site restaurant. Breakfast was also excellent. A light net privacy blind at the bathroom window and bedroom window nearest the sliding door to the bathroom would be a welcome addition.
- Furnival (10/5): Lovely stay in a lovely B & B near the coast, local amenities were great very friendly village. - The Smugglers rest is a fantastic property to stay at, we both enjoyed our stay, the host are very friendly and helpful, there woofer is lovely. The room was very comfortable and couldn't fault a thing. the breakfasts we lovely and very filling, we did have an evening meal and that was brilliant. You certainly get a very good stay at the Smugglers Rest. Couldn't fault a thing!
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- E (10/5): Dreamy boutique retreat for seeing the best of North Devon - Super homely, lovely decor and fab location Nothing … it’s so cute
- Eithne (10/5): If anyone planning a visit to Woolocombe, stay in Mortehoe, you will definitely not be disappointed. - Absolutely everything . Such a beautiful building in a beautiful location.
The decor of the whole building, inside & out , was exceptional.
So much choice for breakfast, we opted for full English, (minus eggs for me) was just delicious.
Tea making facilities in the room plus biscuits, again delicious.
The whole house inside was spotless & so welcoming.
We would return in a heartbeat 💓 Nothing .
- Larry (10/5): Mortehoe is all one can hope for from an English staycation! - Will is an amazing host and the Smugglers Rest is quintessential English charm!
- Tom (10/5): Lovely room, great breakfast, perfect location and nice to be greeted by Kingsley every day! - Lovely room, great breakfast, perfect location and nice to be greeted by Kingsley every day!

- Nigel (9/5): Fantastic time in Devon as usual - Breakfast was very good great choice to choose from.
- Natasha (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was incredible - best hotel breakfast we've ever had.
Room was clean and comfortable.
- Simon (10/5): Spoiling - We liked everything about The Smugglers Rest. Exceptionally decorated, clean and comfortable rooms. Coffee machine, 6 different types of tea, biscuits, replenished daily. Wonderful choice of breakfast. From full English to perfect omelettes. Furthermore, we had dinner at The Smugglers Rest as well and the food was exceptional. The Host could not have been more helpful with a light touch and easy manner. We will certainly recommend The Smuggles Rest and are more than happy to stay here again. Nothing
