- Aljoscha Benjamin (10/5): A beautiful place for everyone who is looking to get a relaxing and traditional stay in an old style village in the moun - This wonderful hotel is a heaven in so many ways. From the design of the house, which is in a fantastic condition, to the food experience until the onsen and all the amazing staff who look so well after you. The location is a traditional and quite town that gives an image of Japan. I highly recommend to come in winter for the beautiful scenery and to book half board as there are only few outside options nearby the hotel. Big compliments to the amazing staff at the hotel - they will ensure for a fantastic experience! Thanks to all of them. Nothing

- Jeanie C (7/5): Been to tens of onsen hotels, the dinners and the staff here are the best ever. - Wonderful food and super-helpful and polite staff. Needs better maintenance.

- Charles (9/5): Superb -
- Janet (10/5): A peaceful, private retreat in nature. - Beautiful location, care taken to ensure the privacy and comfort of guests, delicious and creative menu, relaxing and therapeutic onsen, natural scenery from every window, really nice staff. Unexpected experiences in the vicinity, including a big waterfall that you can walk behind, a colourful nature trail close to Fujiiso, the lovely town of Obuse. Nothing.
- François (4/5): Please STOP fish and cook sharks, turtles, whales and dolphins! - Nice Onsen (which contrasts with the old uncomfortable bathrooms in your bedrooms).
Nice service even if a bit too rigid old style. 1. Shark and Turtle mortal soup SHOULD NOT BE offered on menu, especially for Westerners who are against the slaughter of sharks, turtles, dolphins and whales. We love Japan traditions, but this specific bad habits of Middle Ages must come to an end. So I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND this hotel to friends or family, and never come again if this continues to be offered on menu (even for other guests).
2. Old and uncomfortable Bathrooms really needs to be renovated, in parallel of really unpleasant smells into the rooms.
- Thomas (10/5): Beautiful traditional Japanese experience in an amazing landscape with top notch service. - The best service we've ever had anywhere. Chie was essentially like our personal attendant, helping us with everything including serving dinner, making reservations, and even calling around to find a place that had my size snowboarding boot rental at a local ski resort. She made the experience for us that much better. They didn't really have western style food for breakfast, which was fine, we just didn't have breakfast there, but they did have coffee and tea in the morning.
- Jinlu (10/5): Exceptional - We absolutely loved the overal experience staying at this hotel. All staffs came out to the front to welcome us at check in and they immidiately wiped all of our luggages after unloading. I love how the staffs are always offering help and being so polite and friendly. The facility is well maintained and hygiene is at good standard. I would definitely re-visit this hotel in my future trips to Takayama.
- Annelinda (9/5): Perfect Japanese ryokan and Onsen experience - The Onsen was fabulous, the staff exceptional and the food simply out of this world. Missed having a western option for breakfast, as well as coffee during breakfast - but it was a truly 100% Japanese experience.
- kaizerchief (8/5): Winter white wonderland with spectacular views! - This establishment exudes both luxury and historic charm. They were some strict guidelines - for instance we could only check in at 3pm despite arriving a little early. Guests are restricted to adults only, hence wouldn’t suit young families. We were received at reception with a tea ceremony and were sat at a long bench table with floor to ceiling windows. This was my favourite part of the stay as the views overlooked Yamada Onsen’s mountainous region. There was also complimentary tea and coffee at reception and we came back here for same after breakfast to bask in the beautiful spectacle. It almost seemed like the Ryokan was perched atop a higher altitude. Our group of 5 were ushered into one of the bigger rooms which has 2 modern beds and 3 comfy futons. Like the reception, it had flawless views of the snowy mountains which greeted you in the morning from your deep slumber. Kaiseki had a variety to local fare to try from. Specifically, there was the “pon pon” hotpot where the wait staff would run a fryer on your table with indigenous delicacies from the Takayama region. Whilst the hotpot (nabe) was unique to Fujiiso, it felt somewhat familiar to other cuisines. Personally I enjoyed the snow crab and sashimi more. The onsen had both an indoor and outdoor bath areas and were well maintained. The outdoor one did overlook the snowy mountains and was situated on a balcony setting. Personally I expected an outdoor setting that was built within its natural surroundings, similar to older style Ryokans. We paid a somewhat exorbitant price for this establishment (450 AUD per head per night) which raised our expectation bar. Overall, it came to extra subtleties that made it a luxurious experience. For instance, the room tea sets were exquisite in design and came with local brews such as soba tea. These were refreshed during turn down service. The fridge was well stocked with complementary beer and cold brew tea which we enjoyed by the long bench at reception. Staff also go out of their way to ensure guests have a comforting experience. The neighbouring public onsens were also complimentary and staff would provide free passes to guests if they wished to go (although we didn’t). Overall, a really top location and also close to ski villages for those ski/snowboard heads.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Louise (10/5): Perfection - Beautiful, authentic, calming and the people. Wonderful Loved it all
- Sahar (9/5): Lovely - The facilities , it’s all very beautiful. The food was a mixed bag, some great and some not so much. That’s only thing keeping us from giving a 10
- Kit (10/5): Want to come back soon! - Everything that Fujuiso offered to us。
The location was scenic and peaceful。
The property was clean and comfortable。
The experience of bathing in the onsen was wonderful。
The staff was friendly。
And the dinner and breakfast were delicious. Nothing.
- Angela (10/5): Exceptional hotel with outstanding service - staff, facilities, peaceful atmosphere, food, views. Staff were excellent.
- P5681ULtoml (10/5): Best Ryokan in Japan! - We visited Japan for 2 and a half weeks and stayed at a variety of accommodations during our stay. I can say, without a doubt, that this was the best accommodation we stayed in during our trip and is one of the best hotels/ryokans we have ever stayed in.
The staff couldn’t have been more helpful from the minute we arrived and the peaceful and scenic setting was perfect for a relaxing break. We were treated to a private dining experience and the food was both tasty and plentiful.
We will certainly be recommending this place to anyone visiting Japan and this will be the first place on our list next time we visit.
Thank you so much to all of the staff for a wonderful experience.

- KI-NRT (10/5): Classic ryokan in rural Nagano - We took both of our mothers on a trip through Nagano (including the incomparable Matsumoto Castle), and decided to take a detour in order to stay at this historic ryokan with a history of over 240 years. Prior to doing so, I did my homework to make sure that old doesn't mean run down, worn out and amenity/technology deficient. Thankfully, it wasn't the case here. I cannot speak for the other rooms, but we booked the two "Tokubetsu Shitsu" "special" rooms that were newly built in October, 2022 - Fuji Balcony Suite and Yamazakura. They were both fresh, stylish and spacious, with Fuji taking top honors with an enormous 158m² of living space along with an incredible entrance walkway. Yamazakura was not slouch, either, as it offered 110m² of stretch-out comfort and a hinoki (cedar) wooden Onsen tub as opposed to the granite bath in Fuji. Both rooms featured a Western-style living room, a Japanese-style tatami living room and a bedroom with Western beds (guests can choose to sleep on futons, in which case they will be rolled out in the tatami room.)
The cuisine was very nice. Fujiiso focused on local ingredients and produce, including mountain vegetables, Shinshu beef (Shinshu was the name of the prefecture before it was renamed to Nagano) and seasonal fruits. One of the joys of visiting remote regions of Japan is to try out local delicacies, and in that aspect Fujiiso did not disappoint. For example, white asparagus was in season, so they offered up a grated white asparagus soup with Uni (sea urchin) and Shiso flowers on top. A very refreshing and umami-infused soup. And some of the servings had a "Ohina-sama" theme (from the decorations of the dishes to preparations of the food), since girl's day is in the month of March and there are many traditions around this time of year. Those are among the things that make a top-notch ryokan worthy of repeat visits, especially during different seasons.
Service was also stellar. We were assigned a butler for both rooms, although for the meals just one of them served us since we all dined together. Both Chie and Mariko were enthusiastic, charming and attentive - Chie speaks good English so perhaps you might want to ask for her if your Japanese is not up to snuff. They both took their time in deliberately explaining every feature of our rooms, as well as each course that they served for dinner and breakfast. It was truly a lovely experience to have been able to spend time with such lovely ladies.
While Fujiiso is out of the way (a rental car is probably useful if you're going to spend any amount of time exploring the entire Nagano prefecture), and falls just short of being a destination ryokan, there is a benefit to visiting the Yamada Onsen area - just not at the time that we did - Matsukawa Ravine/Gorge is among the most picturesque in all of Japan, but that's only when there are leaves on the trees, particularly during the Fall foliage season.
- Girish (9/5): will visit again - Very attentive staff in this well done up onsen ryokan. The baths were clean and well maintained.
- Hk (8/5): Very good - good services aged decoration
- Arnaud (9/5): Superb -
- Sally (9/5): A very elegant and traditional Ryokan, with outstanding service, great rooms, comfortable beds, delicious food and a gre - Oasis of Japanese zen, located in a quiet mountain village overlooking a national park, this hotel has outstanding staff who quietly attend to your every need, great traditional rooms but with comfortable western beds, delicious food and a lovely onsen area with indoor and outdoor hot baths. there is nothing I could improve and I can’t wait to go back. the staff were all so kind and helpful, they really made by stay
- Salster11 (10/5): Unbelievably helpful and friendly staff. Very peaceful location. Great onsen and delicious food. Highly recommend it. - Unbelievably helpful and attentive staff. Who really go out of their way to look after their guests. Nothing is too much to ask for and it’s always delivered with elegance and a smile.
Very clean and well equipped bed rooms which all look across a small gorge onto a national park, as the ryokan is built going down the side of it. The lobby is the highest floor. Comfortable beds with good pillows and toppers, clean bathrooms and oceans of delicious silence. Lovely view of snow covered tree trunks from my balcony.
This elegant ryokan is sighed in the middle of the small Yakanama village so you can walk to the few local shops and the village onsen. The hotel has its own onsen as well with inside and outside areas, the latter looking over the gorge. It’s open 5.30-10 am and 3-1am. Nothing beats a hot soak before bed!
My stay included breakfast and dinner which were typically 5 and 8 courses respectively of delicious food. Do ask for and try the village apple juice, the Shinsi valley is famous for its apples.
As I had a car the location was perfect to see some local sites eg Hokusai-man museum dedicated to the famous painter Katsushika Hokusai and Gansho-in temple with a famous 1848 mythical bird painting he did aged almost 90, both of which are in the small town of Obuse (c25 mins away). You can also check out all the famed chestnut produce for which Obuse is renowned in various shops right by the museum.
Slightly further away is the stunning Zenkoji temple in the larger town of Nagano (c45 mins away). The history of Zenkoji temple started in 642, when Yoshimitsu Honda enshrined a Buddhist image. It’s a divinely sacred site and it’s well worth exploring.
Parking was cheap and easy at both sites albeit it was a question in the pay and display in Nagano of pressing the 6hrs and then any other button I could find until a ticket finally emerged.
Also nearby is the famous snow monkey park where you can see them bathing in an onsen. It’s an easy drive (c45 mins away but different direction to Nagano). Parking is free and and then there is a gentle 40 min walk through the trees to the Jigokundani Yean Koen park. Wear walking boots if it’s snowy but its an easy and relaxing walk.
The hotel staff will also suggest other ideas depending on what really interests you. As I said they couldn’t be more helpful from providing shoes trees to help you get back into your footwear to not only cleaning any snow from your windscreen but checking the coast is clear for you in both directions as you pull out.
Divine. Very zen. Chie who served all my meals and cleaned my room was an utter delight and spoke almost perfect English. Can’t wait to come back!!

- DavidT643 (10/5): Beautiful valley in small onsen village - A very small mountain village in a steep narrow valley. Entrance at the top of the inn, and rooms built down along a cliff. Panoramic view of the mountain across the valley. Very nice onsen bath and kaiseki dinner and full Japanese breakfast. Small, high quality Japanese ryokan (inn). Maybe 20 rooms. Impeccable service. Greeted outside upon arrival and tea & sweets served as you view the mountain across the valley while checking in. A very quiet adult getaway.
We visited the public bath a minute walk on the second day morning. Apparently an over 100 year old building with much charm and tradition.
The Takayama winery near by offers spectacular views.
Domaine Sogga in Obuse offers rare wines that you can only buy at the winery. Arguably one of the best wines made in Japan, with a cult following. Many European wine enthusiasts at the winery. For generations the family produced sake, and now also making wines from European grape varietals farmed in Obuse. Rare varietals usually for blending such as petit manseng made into single varietal wine. The winery is the former 'kura' that produced sake.
- DavidT643 (8/5): Panorama of a mountainside - A very small mountain onsen village with very few other inns.
Nestled and built in a valley you will have a spectacular view of the opposite side with the mountain shooting up high.
Friendly service. Nice large bath. Kaiseki dinner served by the dish in a private dining room.
Next morning we took a bath next door at a old public onsen. Charming old building rich with history and culture.
We then visited the Takamine Winery with a spectacular view down from the mountain vineyards. The Japanese winemakers were both trained in Bordeaux...
- ImeldaA463 (10/5): Heaven in Snow Country - Customer service is impeccable. It's there when something is needed, otherwise guests are left to thoroughly enjoy the quiet scenery and restful solitude. Check in/out is done with great ease and meals are fabulously served. You are VIPs and royalty here. This place is definitely a 4-5 star facility!
- kenmack (10/5): Beautiful! - Fujiiso is amazing. The architecture and setting is beautiful. The rooms are magnificent with a terrace overlooking the valley. Very relaxing. We had a Japanese style room and it was beautiful and very spacious. The service and food impeccable. Was such a nice surprise! I highly recommend this property.
- lifeisbeaut (10/5): Absolutely loved this place - very nice getaway and luxurious stay - We loved this place. When first arriving at the hotel from the outside it didn't look like much but inside is great, the common areas are huge and the views onto the mountain from rooms and common areas is very relaxing. The service at this place was the best we had anywhere in Japan, one was made to feel very special. We stayed in the Standard room with balcony and it was a fantastic room compared to everywhere else we had stayed. It was super clean and super comfortable and the balcony was very relaxing to sit at. The tea provided was great. We were going to pay more for a better room but this room was great so it was fine. It really feels like a different world staying at this hotel. The breakfast was included and was in a private room with person serving with sliding door, as was dinner. The food was fantastic quality and plenty of food. We also really loved the dinner, it felt special. We had one person who looked after us during breakfast and dinner and to show us our room etc - Ryosuke Sekiya - I cannot compliment him enough - he was so sweet and just made everything special and it was the best service we ever received. He also made the effort to explain everything relating to all food and all experiences and the waterfall he recommended to go nearby was definitely worthwhile! I would highly recommend this hotel if you want an escape from the cities and just want peace and relaxation and great food. It was a bit pricey but it was so worth it!
- senorburrito (10/5): Tranquility and relaxation awaits - We spent a Friday night at Fujiiso, in between a visit to St Cousair Winery (also highly recommended) and catching a B-League home game for the Shinshu Brave Warriors in Yashiro.
We needed a place to spend the night and decided to book a ryokan in the Yamada Onsen village. Fujiiso was recommended to us by some friends in Tokyo and we are glad to have found out about it.
The room was large, super clean and very comfortable. Bathroom and amenities were first rate. The food, served in the same private dining room for both dinner and breakfast, was delicious. But what made Fujiiso a delight was the tremendous service. Our dedicated server, Sekiya-san, really went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our stay, learned about the local heritage and delicacies, and were able to really relax.
To us, the true mark of a great ryokan is how much it can 'make time slow down'. Our 24 hours at Fujiiso seemed like a three day vacation. Lovely!
- Aoigirl2014 (10/5): Impeccable service and stunning location - We stayed at Fujiiso in October 2018, this is an overdue review!
I've stayed before at both Fukeikan and this time at Fujiiso (My travel writing on petitetravel.net). Both ryokans are excellent. While Fukeikan has an advantage with several lovely outdoor baths, Fujiiso has a very clear edge in providing a luxurious experience, very impeccable and thoughtful service, beautiful interiors, a delightful array of complimentary and quality snacks and tea, and advice on things to do. We stayed at the western special room and I liked the simple but contemporary design very much. The next day, do visit the nature trail in the mountain opposite the hotel for a memorable 50mins walk in the beautiful forest with stream.
- Jascaliner (10/5): A traditional experience - Our lodging was very clean, and appeared traditional with Japanese style sliding screen doors and another room with a small albeit comfortable chair and small table. The staff were all very nice and respectful, and often knelt out of respect. Communication was easy, and many of the staff spoke English well. The Ryokan appeared to be a more traditional type of hotel where we had to dress up in provided Kimonos and wear certain provided shoes around the hotel and this was a culturally rich experience. The actual ryokan was surrounded by trees on a hillside and looked beautiful covered with snow. There were also several public onsens here that could be frequented at all times expect a few hours for maintenance during the night. The food was elaborately prepared and presented in personal booths.
- brendans37 (10/5): A stunning ryokan with wonderful staff - A beautiful location perched up on a hill overlooking a valley and river that changes dramatically with each season. The foyer is large and beautifully appointed. We found every comfort and amenity was of a very high standard. The room was large, and the bedding heavenly. The outdoor onsen was a bonus to watch the snow falling from.
The food for dinner and breakfast was beautifully presented which made for an exciting experience each night and morning.
What made this stay so special was the staff. Everyone from the shuttle bus driver to reception were incredibly friendly and warm. Special mention for Roysuke Sekiya who made our stay so wonderful. His enthusiasm and service was exceptional.
