I normally enjoy supporting small independent businesses like this one, but this stay has made me seriously rethink where I choose to spend my money going forward. Having stayed in both luxury hotels and unique properties with character, I know that basic professionalism and genuine guest care should be standard regardless of price or style. Disliked · Upon our arrival to this property we made our way to our room only to discover it was not the Family Loft with two queen beds we had specifically booked. Instead, we were given a room with one queen bed and a pull-out couch. When I returned to the front desk, I was told the booked room was occupied by a long-term tenant and unavailable. While I understand availability issues can arise, the hotel had been in direct contact with me through the booking platform’s messaging system prior to our arrival and never mentioned this problem. It appeared they chose not to inform us, likely to prevent us from canceling. The pull-out couch was in poor condition, making it impossible for our adult family member to get a decent night’s sleep. The queen bed was also uncomfortable, with our feet elevated in an awkward position. The window was broken and OPEN at least 2 inches. We did not expect a luxury resort, but we did expect the room type we reserved. Most concerning was the staff’s response. Rather than showing empathy or offering solutions, they became defensive, blaming the booking company and stating the room had been unavailable for weeks. Since I booked December 6th, this lack of notification wasted our time and created unnecessary inconvenience. I politely requested compensation for just one night due to the inconvenience, which I believe was more than reasonable. Unfortunately, the hotel made no effort to resolve the situation or make things right despite my several follow-ups. Prospective guests should be aware: while the location may seem convenient, the poor communication, room inaccuracies, and indifferent customer service made this a frustrating experience we would not repeat. To make matters worse, the hotel was crazy loud until 3am due to the bar adjacent to the property, making rest nearly impossible. We will be visiting Juneau several times a year in the coming years with August 2026 being our next stay, sadly we cannot support this small business.

Dean (6/5): vintage lodging, with old town comfort - The vintage was authentic right down to the smell of old boiler smell, i didnt mind it The water was good and hot I actual liked the bar downstairs open mic, and karaoke was fun fit right in with the locals. Honest folks called me to tell me i left my shoes. Parking sucked Room was cold, no extra blanket. I really need a receipt Never saw a staff person to help me with that

Daraus resultierende Einschränkungen hinsichtlich des Komforts und der Ausstattung waren mussten akzeptiert werden. Der fehlende Teekocher im Zimmer, der auf Nachfrage nachgereicht wurde und die etwas antiquierte Badeinrichtung.

Justin (10/5): - The building is very old (the oldest hotel in Alaska) but it was a great stay. I never had any issues. I couldn't open my window because I was on the 2nd floor and the building looked to be built into the mountain so there was a lot of foliage right outside my window, but they provided a box fan. There was a Daddy Longlegs spider on the ceiling but I left him alone and he left me alone. I would stay here again.
wes (6/5): - This isn’t a hotel that everyone will like. It’s old and historic. It’s quirky and odd. There is no elevator. Many rooms don’t have a private bathroom and the rooms I’ve stayed in that do leave a bit to be desired. They are not too diligent about maintenance— stuff will be broken. You will hear noise/music from the bar downstairs. It’s also cheaper than most of the accommodations in the area. This is a place to stay for a night or two. If you want comfort and convenience this isn’t the hotel for you. This is a basically clean place and if you like interesting places to stay, this is it.

Samantha (8/5): - The staff here are very friendly, and my room was exactly what I expected. The hotel is very conveniently located downtown, which, expectedly, comes with downtown noises. There isn't any AC, but the room cooled down at night to a comfortable level. The "biggest" issue I had was that the bed was very squeaky and was loud any time I had to shift around. Overall, I had a good experience here.

Susan (8/5): Would recommend solely due to the location. - The location within walking distance of the port and many little locally-owned shops. Each staff member I interacted with was so helpful. Layout of room was poor; bathroom extremely small. Window fan was blowing strings of dirt.

The only down side wasn’t the hotel but the numerous cruise ships. Plan to do things as early as possible to avoid the crowds in the afternoon. Unless you like crowds.

But it was a really fun experience to stay in a hotel with such history. My only complaint is there parking. There are only about 6 actual spots and you drive down a steep hill behind the hotel to get to the small lot. It is in bad need of some work at the bottom of the hill. My car kept scraping the pavement going over that part. But other than that, the hotel was great. It's in a location with stores and food all around it. Would definitely stay again.

G3154NIsasham (10/5): The Alaskan experience lives on at the Alaskan Hotel and Bar! - This bar, by far, has been one of the most accommodating and friendliest spots during my 4-year span in Juneau. The venue is very intimate, and while it may not have a modern aesthetic, it has such a fascinating history that its throwback authenticity adds to the ghostly lore and vibes. The staff, both bar and hotel, are absolutely phenomenal and take great care to preserve unique characteristics of the this longstanding institution. Not only is the live entertainment a one-of-a-kind, out-of-mind experience, but the throngs that flow in an out prove that its popularity lies in the beyond welcoming atmosphere that permeates into the crowded sidewalks just outside. If you want a chance to get to know the locals and experience Alaska at its best, I strongly recommend you spend some time at the Alaskan!

John (6/5): - Tiny rooms, very antiquated. Be happy that there is electricity. Major amount of skinny stairs with nails protruding, very steep with inadequate railing. Our queen room with ensuite was about 12' x 12', that included the bathroom which was put in the closet. It did have a small electric stove right next to the sink - odd placement. Extremely pricey for what you get. Almost $200 a night in a place that, while historic, has not had any real improvements since it was built in the 1800's. The light fixtures are all 50+ years old. It is right in the middle of downtown, so it is very convenient to shopping, bar hopping, and dining.

Michael (10/5): - Truly, an oddball hotel, but Juneau and Alaska are oddball places. Would definitely stay here again if in Juneau. Keep in mind this is an old hotel serving a rustic community. Great stay regardless.

Venessa (7/5): Interesting - The building is a piece of history and should be treated as such. Lots of shops around so it was easy to find something. Since it is a really old building, a lot of things are not updated. Don’t expect anything fancy.

PHYLLIS (8/5): - Right downtown in the middle of all activities. No door on bathroom, just a shower curtain. Very old hotel which was funky, but we found it ok.

Cynthia (6/5): - Although it was a historic building, it was in great need of some upkeep and perhaps major repairs. The floor clearly went downhill from one side of the room to the other. Also, it needs better insulation between rooms. We had a 5:30 am Uber to the airport and our neighbor talked loudly on the phone from 11:30 pm until 2am. The mattress was too soft and lumpy. We were hoping for a better experience, but if in Juneau again, we will probably choose a more modern hotel.
Joan (10/5): Vintage Charmer - Nice place to stay in Juneau. Room was clean & comfy, the staff was helpful and delightful. Recommend Alaskan Hotel. Just note there is no elevator. I knew that ahead of time, so it wasn't a surprise. The young men carried my luggage up and brought it back down.

Shannon (9/5): Charming hotel in heart of Juneau with great price and fun bar downstairs! - Had the queen bed room on the 3rd floor with private shower and toilet. The bed was comfortable. Also had a kitchenette of oven, fridge, microwave, coffee maker. Hotel served fresh coffee downstairs as well. The charm of this older hotel that is right smack dab in the middle of Juneau and convenient to all the shops and restaurants made this the perfect location for us! Also the price for a downtown location beat out all the other hotels. Lastly, it was supposedly an old brothel in the day and they have a fun bar downstairs that provides entertainment when the other bars close up shop due to the cruise ships leave by 900 pm. The noise was not a problem on the 3rd floor. I took the bus from the airport which was only $2 dollar cash versus a Taxi or Uber for $30. Bus stop is just a short walk away from front of airport and the bus dropped me off right near front of Alaskan Hotel. Note: there is no elevator so you have to carry your bags up the flight of stairs. Also would recommend having a curtain over the toilet door area to allow for more privacy. Physically not a way to probably put a door as this is a old hotel and room configurations all vary.
Melanie (1/5): - It was right downtown. Beautiful old building. No elevator, rooms were very noisy and hot. If you opened the windows (there were no screens,)and the noise was even worse. There was a saloon under the hotel and we did know about that. So we are at fault as well. But the noise was ongoing until after 3 am. In the room itself, there was nowhere to put your toiletries and no hook to even hang a towel for the shower. We had to put the towel on the floor. There were wires running along the floor, and that was a bit sketchy. It looked like they were trying to update this beautiful old building, but it needs a lot. It is not for the older generation or anyone who has a handicap. All rooms are 2 and 3 flights up. Also, there was no one downstairs in the morning till 8. We went downstairs, got the coffeepot, went back up to our 3rd floor room, got water in the pot, and made coffee for all the other guests who were looking for coffee. I'd like to say the staff, when there, were amazing, and they did allow us to find another hotel without an extra fee added.

Kathleen (6/5): - I love old hotels. The room was clean and neat. The bathroom was clean and easy to use. Staff was helpful even when I couldn't get a ride from the airport they were so helpful. Then at night .....I had pot wafting up from the street level with if coming in through closed older windows. Then there was a party on the street from the liquor store across the street & the dispensaries. The street cleaner does come at 4 AN to clean up. Maybe a room at the back of the building or in the east side would be better if you want quiet.
blossomt590 (2/5): Very questionable characters in this bar/hotel, and I do hope they have the footage of me they speak about - I’ve visited The Alaskan Hotel & Bar multiple times, often just to enjoy the music, the space, and the atmosphere. On one occasion, a staff member told me I was loitering — apparently because I hadn’t bought a drink every single time I came in. That alone was already a stretch, but when I calmly challenged that reasoning, they changed their explanation and told me they had “hours of footage of me making customers uncomfortable.” I was shocked. No one had ever approached me with a complaint before — no conversation, no warning, no discussion. Just surveillance claims and vague accusations with no opportunity to speak for myself. It felt like I was being watched, judged, and treated differently. I’m leaving this review not to stir conflict, but because people deserve to know how certain patrons — especially those who may not “fit in” with a specific crowd — can be treated here. This was disappointing, and deeply concerning

Carla (1/5): Inexpensive for the location - The location was perfect, but also a little sketchy Everything was very old which I understand as t’s a vintage hotel with history, but things were dirty and not well kept there was a kerosene smell that had us vomiting through the night. We would’ve stayed elsewhere if I could’ve found accommodations but we did cancel our second night and went elsewhere. The window was very, very small and high up and opened up to an area where people could walk by, it didn’t feel safe or secure because we had to keep the window open as there was no air conditioning and we happened to be in Juneau on their two hot days of the year. We found out later that it’s the most haunted hotel not that we necessarily believe in that, but it just added to the urgency of getting out of there as soon as we could. Our clothes reeked of kerosene stench. Then there was simple things they have a coffee maker, but no cups. The oven and stove were on when we walked into the room. The door ran into the twin bed. There wasn’t enough room for the door to open all the way, and the twin bed was all springs and when you sat on it, you felt the board underneath. The management was very nice and not having us pay for our second night and refunding us. We do really appreciate that. When we arrived, it was late at night and the bar was going full blast with great music, but there were drunk people in the stairwell going up to our room it almost seemed like they were homeless. i’ve been to hostels that were nicer.

Terry (9/5): Great location, good music but can be a onisy. - We loved the quirkiness of the hotel with all the antiques and the location was fabulous. We also liked the music when it finished around 11 or earlier. Saturday night was SOOO noisy in our room which was right above the bar, but we sort of were expecting this based on other reviews. I would suggest asking for a room on the 3rd floor instead of the 2nd and as far away from the middle/back as possible. We would stay again but definitely ask for a different room.

Venture52020870314 (4/5): - July 2025 - 3 Guests - Room 311 Historic, yes! But not worth the trip down memory lane! This hotel does not deserve top rating at all!!!!! The Alaskan Hotel & Bar has a fantastic location to walk wherever you want to explore in Juneau! The staff is friendly and provided luggage storage at no charge. Lola the black laborer was so sweet. Shower was hot, too. However, that is where the positive ends. - No elevator so be prepared to climb three stories for 300 rooms. The hotel felt more like a hostel as they offer rooms with shared bathrooms in the hallway. - Our room had 1 queen and full size in a loft like space. Small ladder to get to that bed. Bed covers were old and hard to tell if clean. Sheets seemed fine. Beds were fair. -Separate toilet and shower rooms each with their own door. Crumpling drywall around the shower stall and window curtains about to fall off the window. No screen. - There isn’t a separate heating/cooling thermostat so we opened all the window for circulation. None of the windows had screens on them. No blackout curtains and the curtains that were there were old. - Refrigerator, stovetop, microwave were available in our room, however, didn’t use for our one night stay. Dishes that were available in the kitchen felt leftover from previous guests. -Overall, I wouldn’t stay here again due to cleanliness and safety concerns. The rooms were very dated and needing repairs even for a historic hotel. Crumbling drywall in bathroom, rusted emergency sprinklers on ceiling, cords hanging, no screens on windows, old carpet and overall not feeling well kept which made it feel dirty. Overgrown landscaping out to rear parking area. Please be informed prior to booking this hotel.
Deborah (1/5): Don’t go unless you’re interested in being in the bar until 2 AM. - The front desk person was very friendly and the room was clean. Also, the location was convenient. The booming bass or the LOUD music downstairs didn’t end until 2:15 AM. We really needed to sleep and left more tired than when we came.
