- Daniel (10/5): Beautiful small hotel in wine country with stellar service - Carla and Mercedes were incredibly welcoming and helpful. The property is beautiful, and located right in the center of San Asensio near the main plaza. The breakfasts were generous and delicious. The room was enormous by Spanish standards, and well equipped. Great water pressure and the water was as hot as you wanted.
- Hazel (10/5): Exceptional -
- 376louisam (10/5): If you're in La Rioja this place is a must - Stayed in this delightful hotel for two nights. We were greeted and looked after by Clara and Mercedes who couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. They are both extremely knowledgeable about the area and only too pleased to advise. The rooms are lovely and the ambience of the hotel is more like staying in someone's house. Breakfast was most enjoyable with a good variety of choices including freshly squeezed orange juice and even boiled eggs. Just fabulous. San Asensio itself is a small pueblo with cool narrow streets and very interesting to explore. This was a return visit for two of us which can sometimes be a disappointment but it was just as fantastic as we remember. Thank you Clara and Mercedes.
- Oscar (9/5): Superb -
- Kym (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steve (8/5): A delight. And such welcoming people. - The advice about where to eat was brilliant. The breakfast was a joy especially as the had taken in a conversation the night before about how we loved strong coffee
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb -
- Francesca (9/5): Superb -
- Beatriz (9/5): We had a really nice stay - Excelent location, delicious breakfast, the hosts were very nice and helpful whenever we needed. 😊 No air conditioner in the room. And during a heat wave like we experienced, it could have been more pleasant if there was one.
- 1land2ps (8/5): Characterful and charming stay - This is a lovely, atmospheric guesthouse converted from a historic residence, in the centre of the small town San Asensio in northern La Rioja.
Hosts Clara and Mercedes are welcoming and efficient, and provide useful advice on how to maximise a stay.
We enjoyed tapas at a local bar, on the advice of our hosts. It was just our type of evening meal. The breakfasts were generous and relaxed - meat and cheese, as well as yoghurt, fruit and breads, plus coffee/tea, juice.
There is a spacious sitting room, with fire for a chilly night.
Our room, which was the more spacious variety, was a generous size - not huge - with a king sized bed and an ensuite - very clean and well-equipped but in need of an update; the shower was over the bath. The room incorporated the modern comforts in a historic shell. There is a lift for getting heavy luggage to the rooms.
Parking can be a bit tricky, but we managed to find spots within 50 metres of the hotel.
San Asensio is well-connected for a touring holiday and air/sea ports.
This was a characterful and charming stay. We would return, and recommend.
- Evgeny (9/5): Excellent stay in Rioja - Very pleasant small hotel, run by two nice ladies. Nice big room, with a high ceiling. It was very comfortable to sleep, not cold.
Good breakfast (coffee, juice, toast, fruits, etc.). Perfect location to discover Rioja region - 30 min to Logrono, 5 min to Briones, 10 min to Haro. Nothing bad to mention, very good impression. No dedicated space for parking (like in other old towns), just drop your car nearby, next street or so. Definitely a good choice for wine tourism and not only!
- Eric (10/5): Clara & Mercedes are great hosts. Enjoyed visiting Spain's Wine Country and Bodegas Lecea's Festival - Clara & Mercedes are the best hosts. Great location to travel through Spain's Wine Country
- Jose (10/5): Travel in time in the wine region - Beautifully restored boutique property, great modern bathrooms with plush towels, superior healthy breakfast and great service in the middle of wine growing region. Nothing
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional - Really lovely and interesting restored building. The owners were so helpful and made our stay very comfortable. Nothing.
- Jane (10/5): Without a doubt, one of the best places we have ever stayed! - La Capellania’s excellent reviews are well-deserved. From the moment we pulled up outside this gorgeous guesthouse/hotel and were greeted so warmly by the owners, Mercedes and Clara, we knew we had lucked into somewhere very special. It felt like we were coming to stay with family (albeit very discreet, professional family) - our long-lost Spanish cousins! The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and wonderfully comfortable, the common areas are warm and inviting and the breakfasts are varied and delicious. All this within the walls of a beautiful historic building. But it was Clara and Mercedes who made our stay exceptional. They gave each and every guest individual attention. We were in the area for work and we could not have achieved what we did without the assistance of Clara and Mercedes who made some appointments for us using their wide circle of local contacts. This ensured we achieved more than we thought possible. We are so grateful for their assistance. One day we hope to return to this wonderful hotel just for a holiday. The town is lovely, the locals are warm and hospitable, the area is beautiful.
- Andrew (10/5): Perfect - The property had been beautifully restored and we were made to feel very welcome. It was comfortable and clean the rooms were spacious and the owners were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Nothing
- Trevor (9/5): Nice rooms and great for walking. Town was very limited on food options. - The two owners are absolutely delightful. The breakfast was very delicious and we really liked all of the available open spaces, both inside and outside. We were able to easily walk to our bodega tour which was perfect! The town can really be a ghost town on certain days and nights. We often had to travel to Haro for dinners. It also would have been nice if there were a couple of shops open.
- Gavin (10/5): Exquisite hotel. Lovely hosts. - The hotel is exquisite and extremely well managed. The hosts were very welcoming, informative and friendly. The hotel is very close to the small but vibrant local square - Bar Del Castillo and Bar Jesus were great for drink and pintxos. It is an ideal location for touring Rioja Alta and into the Basque Country.
- Argyropoulos (10/5): Hotel CAPELLANĮA is a beautifully restored building in the centre of San Asencio. Clara and Mercedes were very kind and - Beautifully restored historical building in an excellent location, 1 minute walk from the town square. The hotel is managed by 2 exceptionally kind hosts, Clara and Mercedes, who took great care to ensure our stay was very enjoyable by providing us with excellent recommendations on cultural attractions, restaurants and wineries of La Rioja making our time there very memorable. The hotel met and exceeded our expectations.
- Andrew (10/5): Great accommodation. Amazing hospitality from Clara and Mercedes. I cant recommend Capellania enough - The breakfast was fantastic and requests for additions to the menu were met with a smile. Clara and Mercedes were amazing and also happily provided information/suggestions re restaurants and wine tastings. They even made the bookings for us and vetted any bookings we had made prior to arrival to ensure we would have a great experience. Nothing. We loved our stay and would stay again.
- Iñaki (9/5): Superb -
- Regina (9/5): Lovely boutique hotel!!! - Mercedes and Clara was wonderful hosts!! Hotel is centrally located in the Rioja Valley. Beautiful renovated boutique hotel. Large, comfortable clean room. The breakfasts was outstanding. Tea/coffee facilities and honesty bar downstairs. Parking nearby. Mercedes gave us lots of information about the town and surrounding places to visit. Bars are a stroll away and on a Friday evening there is pinchos/tapa available at all the bars. A fan in the room could help on very hot summer days.
- 536NicoleR536 (10/5): A charming village hotel in la Rioja - Travelled to la Rioja with my mother and her friend for 3 days - we were looking for something off the beaten track and charming and la Capellania and San Asencio delivered. The hotel is just beautiful with big comfortable rooms. But what made it perfect was the hospitality of Mercedes and Clara. As we were travelling without a rental car, visiting the different wineries and medieval villages of the area could have been a logistical headache. Instead these two marvellous women took us under their wing and helped us to get the most out of our visit, arranging tours and a driver to get us all around. A highlight of the trip for all of us.
- Writtleman (10/5): Small boutique hotel offering comfort and peace - San Asencio is a small sleepy town in the middle of Rioja not far from Logrono and Haro.
In the centre close to the main square is Hotel Capellania.
It was converted 7-8 years ago from a residence and has been made into a fascinating little hotel of 8 rooms. Loads of stone walls and old shutters but warm and friendly. The rooms are large and the beds comfortable if a little solid. Bathrooms are adequate and spacious.
Breakfast is basic (cold meats fruit juice etc) but plenteous and the friendly staff attentive. There are drinks (beer and wine) available for a signature as there is no proper bar. There are cafe restaurants in plenty nearby.
For peace and quiet you can do no better and it is central to many of the cultural delights of Rioja. I had a great stay here for 5 days of sightseeing and golf and can thoroughly recommend this hotel
- Mapula (10/5): Exceptional - We had an enjoyable and comfortable stay.
The owners were extremely helpful and kind.
- TonyandSarahG (10/5): Great value,, hospitality and character - A great stay here - hosts could not have been more hospitable or helpful. Loved the character of the hotel and very comfortable stay. Breakfast was lovely and generous. Only downside was restaurant options in town limited especially when we were there over a holiday/early week. In lovely countryside and great access to la rioja sightseeing.
Very good value.
- Iryna (10/5): It was an amazing experience! -
- BackPacker399233 (10/5): Excellent choice - I can confirm that this little village hotel remains the welcoming place that pre-covid reviews have described. Clara and Mercedes look after their guests with old-fashioned hospitality, nothing seems too much. San Asensio is delightfully rural, yet La Capellania is central for whatever one wants to do in La Rioja.
- Yarden (10/5): Exceptional - Clara and Mercedes hosted us as we were part of their family. They always cared about our feelings and made everything their can to make us feel comfortable.
Room is very spacious and very clean.
The breakfast is just what you need in order to start your day exploring the wineries.
The location is perfect. Short drive to lots of wineries and beautiful villages. Parking is free and on Friday evening there is pinxos night at town. Very lovely and welcoming people.
One can tell that Clara and Mercedes truly put their hearts into the place.
Highly recommended!
- Krzysztof (9/5): Superb - Charming boutique hotel- perfect for La Rioja winery trip or romantic gateway
- Hamish (10/5): perfectly sited close to the central part of the small town, La Capellania is run and managed by two very able and atten - centrally situated and very comfortable - attentive owners nothing
- Petr (10/5): An ideal base for exploring the Rioja region. - Both lady owners are very pleasant, attentive and helpful. Home atmosphere. Rich, varied and tasty breakfast. Comfortable bed. The room and bathroom were carefully cleaned every day. Possibility of parking directly in front of the hotel.
- Craig (9/5): Welcoming, authentic boutique hotel - The property has been beautifully renovated to reflect the location. The hosts were so welcoming & helpful. Carla was a fabulous tour guide! San Asensio is true Northern Spain & we made very welcome by locals. Delightful courtyard garden at the hotel to relax in. Nothing was too much trouble. A wonderful visit. Air conditioning would have been lovely & a kettle in our room. (We did have access to tea & coffee making facilities in the communal area).
- doc_in_cancun (10/5): VERY NICE HOTEL - This is a little hotel ( the biggest in the city) which is run by Clara and Mercedes, who will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. This hotel was built in a house that was constructed in 1798, it has 8 rooms, confortable, a short walk to the town plaza, if you want rest and relaxation, this is the place that I recommend, book early because it is always booked, it has free wifi, staying in the hotel, was a real treat, imagine staying in a building that still conserves some of its original doors, structures, for me, its a 100% recommendation!!!!!
- lvu2500 (10/5): Old but comfortable house for your Rioja visit - Wonderful old setting, motivated and very friendly and helful hosts and pretty central location in the Rioja region. Breakfast is nice and comfy.
The ladies of the house are more than willing to help with anything. Wine and bodegas, food, booking a restaurant, road directions, museum visits, ... you name it.
- ruthdw (10/5): Quality - and such good value - with charming hosts - book it now! - I highly recommend this beautiful, characterful, historical, superbly run hotel in the
little village of San Asensio in La Rioja Alta.
If you like the thought of staying in a fine old stone house built in the 1700's with heavy antique oak doors and the eight bedrooms discreetly modernised with quality fittings - all in a calm peaceful atmosphere - then this is for you.
The bathrooms are very good with soft fluffy towels - the beds very comfortable and the bed linen superb.
Breakfasts here are a pleasure - prepared with fresh ingredients with the same individual care that typifies this boutique hotel.
There is a modern lift for those who need it - although the wide staircase with a light- filled cupola above it are a pleasure.
Furnishings in the living room are elegant, yet relaxing - and there is a small outdoor courtyard at the back.
I have stayed in many paradors across Spain over the years - and La Capellania had the feel of a mini version - but with dedicated personal care shown by the owners
Clara and Mercedes - which made it so friendly.
They spoke Spanish with me - and English with my son. They introduced us to a weekly Pintxos night in the bars of the village plaza on our arrival - and arranged a tour of a 200 year old local bodega - in underground caves.
We drove to lovely villages like Abalos - and gorgeous wine centres like La Guardia
- always helped by their suggestions or advice.
I have travelled widely in different parts of the world - and this has been one of my favourite places to stay.
I would be really happy to return one day.
- beltrany2016 (10/5): Great hotel in La Rioja - The best hotel to enjoy in La Rioja. Rooms are big, clean and place is quiet and peaceful. The owners are amazing people. From the hotel you can visit wonderful places , sightseeing, bodegas...and food everywhere is great (not to mention tje wine....) We loved stay here
- hillyxx (10/5): Fantastic hidden gem - This is a small and perfect hotel ideal for discovering the rioja region. The room was wonderful as was the breakfast. Clara and Mercedes went out of their way to organize and book things for us and spent time advising us on the area. Would love to go back. We were there 2 nights and could have easily stayed longer
- PM62 (10/5): A great hotel - all the reviews are spot on - Absolutely superb little hotel (8 rooms).
You hope to find little hotels like this and when you stay here you know you have just rolled a double six.
The rooms are great, huge with enormous comfy beds and great bathrooms. Everything look exactly like the photos - they have picked a 'special' room to photograph like some hotels. Rooms are very quiet, both from any outside noise and other rooms in the hotel.
The included breakfast was lovely and the service from the two owners was superb - helpful with suggestions and offering to book restaurants, bodega visits, etc, but without being pushy.
Parking is not an issue - I don't recommend driving up the narrow road where the hotel is located unless you are very confident, but there is lots of (free) street parking 20 meters away.
The rooms do not have air conditioning but as an old thick walled building stayed reasonably cool when we stayed in June when it was warm but not hot.
- 7wintong (8/5): A great hotel and excellent service - We found the hotel very comfortable and the the hosts were exceptionally helpful in arranging restaurant bookings or any other needs. Very helpful in suggestions for day trips. Parking is on the street outside the hotel and easy. Recommended.
- seib (10/5): The reviews are spot on - I am reclining on a bed in room 5, getting ready for a tapas bar crawl tonight in the square a block away. Clara greeted us when we checked in yesterday. Her English is great and she provided maps with notes and lots of guidence for our Rioja stay.
The room is generously sized with a nice large bed. Excellent free wi-fi. Breakfast this morning was well presented typical fare of juices, coffee, breads, meats and cheeses.
We met Clara and her partner, Mercedes out in the square last night and they were delightful. We chatted about their town and the restaurants and nightlife and what we planned for today.
We will definately stay here next time we’re in the area.
- AC (10/5): - Great location in a small town that is central to tons of wineries and sights. Clara and Mercedes are the owners and incredibly helpful. Before we went finished check in, Clara had given us a stack of information and a map with tons of her favorite recommendations. Nice rooms and a big bed. Only downside: bed a bit uncomfortable. Still, I will be recommending this hotel to friends and family.
- Peter Lunding (10/5): Best Hotel in Rioja - During our 2 weeks trip in Northern Spain, this was our best stay. The owners Clara and Mercedes makes the whole difference compared to other hotels. They are extremely helpful and serviceminded and makes you feel at home. The Hotel is placed very well for excursions in Rioja and Clara arranged everything in advance.
- Chris & Kellie (10/5): Fantastic Experience - My partner brought me to this beautiful region for a surprise birthday short break. The hotel was absolutely fantastic. From its location in the charming village of San Asensio and the surrounding vineyards and plentiful bodegas, to the village “Friday” night pinchos in the rustic and welcoming village cafes/bars on the main square, to our amazing and welcoming hosts Mercedes & Clara, who were always on hand to advise on the local sights and tastes, to the fabulous local breakfast treats - we could not have asked for a better holiday! We will definitely be coming back here. Thank you Mercedes & Clara for making our stay such a fantastic experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Location, Location, Location - Great hotel to visit entire Rioja region. Comfortable bed and great shower/bathroom. Breakfast was reasonable and plentiful. The proprietors are very welcoming. The Vivanco Wine Museum is a must.
