None of this comes cheap but go and enjoy.

The room gets daily cleaning and restocking, but the reception/concierge is not really present (they can be summoned with a phone call from the front desk). Overall, a unique, high-quality hotel in an excellent location.

- OhFranklin (10/5): Would stay here again - What a swell spot. The room was lovely. We had a nice view of the river and would have our coffee in the morning watching people stroll by and the birds hopping around in the water. Location was pretty ideal: Quiet but close to the metro, restaurants, and shopping. Radiant heat in the floors. An almost fully equipped kitchen with coffee and small refrigerator. They don’t have a restaurant on-premise (or really, anything other than the rooms) so we’d buy yogurt and things the night before and make coffee (provided) in the morning. A number of convenience stores nearby. Washing machine for mid-vacation cleaning. Handsome bathroom although maybe a bit dark for putting on makeup (or per my wife). Fancier robot toilet than other hotels. Lovely linens. The bed was comfortable but will be a bit on the firm side if coming from a plush hotel before your visit here. Room had a good sized tatami area as well. Desk staff were friendly and efficient.

- Littlefoodmonster (10/5): Our most favourite hotel in Japan so far - This is the best hotel we have stayed in Japan so far. Location cannot be better - restaurant, cafes, shopping all around the corner. It is also within 10 mins walk to Gion where sightseeing can be done. The room is very spacious, clean and equipped with modern amenities. We stayed in a studio with a Japanese bedroom - perfect for our baby who is sensitive to noises. They provided us with a baby crib and a baby bath tub. Before we arrived, they have helped us book dinner and provided us with info about airport transfer. They also helped us book limousine from Kyoto to Kansai airport and taxi from hotel to bus stop. They are responsive to our emails and always think one step further for us. I just cannot wait to stay in this hotel with my family again!
- rachellK492WO (10/5): Best Stay in Japan Ever! - 교토에서의 마지막 날 이곳에 묵었습니다. 위치, 시설, 직원들의 친절함 뭐 하나 나무랄 게 없었습니다. 도착하기 전에 이메일을 주고 받으면서도 직원들이 너무나도 친절하다는 것을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 교통도 편하고, 걸어서 10분 이내에 갈 수 있는 곳도 많습니다. 관광지, 쇼핑(전통시장, 백화점), 식당 등등 정말 완벽한 위치입니다. 이번에는 아쉽게도 1박 뿐이었지만, 다음에는 더 오래 머물 생각입니다. My parents and I stayed at Room 101 for one night before we leave Japan. The stay was filled with surprises all very pleasant. The staffs were extremely kind and helpful even before I got there. I can tell they were trying their utmost to make our stay as enjoyable as possible and it was. The location was perfect. With only 10 minutes of walk you can get to historic area, bustling shopping district including traditional market and more. But we didn't have to leave the room at all. Overlooking nice stream we could easily stay the whole day in the room enjoying the view and relay. The room was very spacious and with well thought-of amenities. I would love to come back to Aoi Hotel Kyoto for a longer stay next time.
- lolly616 (10/5): Excellent - My wife and I stayed at Aoi Hotel Kyoto for five (5) days in November, it was perfect. The location was fantastic, walking distance to Gion and many, many restaurants. Our room looked over the river, extremely well appointed. It was extremely spacious and perfect for a longer stay. The hotel is similar to staying in a modern apartment or condominium. It is not a full service hotel but the staff is extremely helpful. I would highly recommended staying at Aoi Hotel Kyoto.
- GeoWall (10/5): Unique experience in Aoi Takasegawa - We stayed 5 nights in the small traditionnal house Takasegawa belonging to Aoi Stay in Kyoto with our 2 children aged 8 and 9. The house is better than shown on the pictures. It has a small living room with a small kitchen and is directly on the steam behind the house. Although we went in winter we sometimes opened the window to see and listen to the small stream. Upstairs is a tatami room whith 4 comfortable beds. We also particularly appreciated that there were 2 full well appointed bathrooms. The surroundings are fantastic with many small bars and restaurants. We mostly walked to main temples or rented bicycles. Aoi staff were very very kind and extremely helpful always trying to fulfill our many requests. We highly recommend this unique experience, very different from staying in a hotel.

- PatrickT79 (10/5): Such a wonderful hotel in the heart of Kyoto - We recently stayed at the Aoi hotel for four nights - What a fabulous place it is, perfectly located on the river and within easy walking distance of Pontocho, Gion Corner and the Nishiki market. The room we had was beautiful and had a wi Sergio bath tub overlooking the river. It’s a stylish hotel surrounded by fantastic restaurants and wine/cocktail bars but secluded so that it feels like an oasis of calm when you enter after a day exploring Kyoto. The staff were very helpful and our favourite extra was the complimentary handy phone which was so useful when exploring the city.

- Angela (10/5): - This hotel is in a great location in Kyoto. It was within walking distance of city center but tucked away on a quiet romantic street near the canal near restaurants and bars. The hotel is very Japanese - travelers will need to remove their shoes in the room. The bathroom shower was a little bit moldy, however. It was clean, but the wooden tub had some dark spots that really defy scrubbing. Otherwise, the room was spotlessly clean and perfect for a family. The washer dryer was great and easy to use and we liked have a refrigerator in the room.

The taxi driver didn't know it, and I must have walked past the narrow entrance six or seven times, in increasing desperation, before I found the nameplate of the hotel. To be fair, it does not look much like a hotel. Set slightly back from a busy butt narrow street, it looks like an out-sized traditional house. This is an illusion that was continued after we found our way up the narrow, bamboo-trimmed path to the front door. We were in the very lap of Kyoto hospitality. In three nights, we stayed in two different rooms, both lavishly but tastefully appointed in refined Japanese style, each ready to accommodate far more than just the two of us. Spacious, relaxing, everything we wanted was close at hand, whether in the tatami-floored bedroom, the handsomely equipped kitchen, or the large living areas. And the views! Looking out on the river. We watched the world go by for quite a while, hardly believing we were so close to the entertainment area of a huge city. We simply loved this place. My daughter and her husband stayed in a traditional townhouse a little farther down the road, which was, apparently, part of the same hotel. Exquisitely furnished, with an even better view down to the river than our own. No breakfast, but plenty of places around to eat. A little trouble when we checked in and were faced with an illegal demand for our passports, but apart from that a wonderful, wonderful stay.
- hammlittle (10/5): Wonderful hotel, perfect location! - My husband and I decided to book Aoi Hotel Kyoto on our visit to Kyoto. At first the price seemed a bit high but it was worth every penny! The staff was very kind and helpful. The room was very spacious and comfortable! The amenities the hotel provided were 5 star, from the bathroom products, to the tea/coffee, and in room washer/dryer combo. Not to mention the location is perfect!! Right in the heart of downtown Kyoto surrounded by the beautiful streams and old charm. I would highly recommend staying at Aoi Hotel Kyoto on your visit to Kyoto.
- M1582OSfredg (10/5): SUPERB STAY, SUPERB LOCATION, SUPERB HOSTS - We stayed at the hotel's Annex (which does not seem to be described on the website) and it was an excellent stay. When you arrive by taxi you may think that you are in a very old neigborhood, as the hotel is well hidden. It is a treasure of combination of modern facilities and amenities, with a zen accent (no shoes). The rooms of the Annex are not as big as the main building but are very spacious, very modern. The host spends a good 15 minutes explain to you everything about your room and your stay and the front desk is more than helpful with information of the area, etc. One thing the host told us that saved us tons of time is that the train.subway station besides the hotel has a train going to Osaka every 10-20 minutes, and takes only 42 minutes. Guess at what price? 400 Yens, that is 4$. No need for a taxi to the Kyoto station and the Shinkansen which is outrageously expensive. As for the Gion area, it is great at night but you have to pick your restaurant carefully. Many are not tourist friendly and simply put the menu in Japanese basically meaning stay away unless you know what you want to eat. Avoid the next door Italian (or as its business card says: Itarian! resto, very expensive and very small portions. In other words, when In japan eat Japanese food. Aoi hotel: Bravo.
- wendywdying (10/5): Aoi Bukkoji-Bashi next to Takase river - wonderfully located in the heart of Kyoto, next to the Takase river. A short walk to the shopping area and on the other side, very close to Kamo river so we can enjoy the daily Kyoto life like a local. this machiya (townhouse) is equipped with simple cooking facility with a small kitchenette and dining table, we enjoyed very much preparing our breakfast and one dinner in house and totally enjoyed it, although there are endless meal choices just a few steps away. there are two rooms on the second floor, one western style with two beds, and one Japanese room with two futons. Highly recommended for the location and it is a truly comfy and convenient place to stay in Kyoto.

I loved the large, clean bathroom and the fact that I could do laundry there before we left for hakone. The service is impeccable and the hotel even provides a phone for you to use during your stay. - fong_toronto (10/5): Excellent stay to experience Kyoto life - We stayed 3 nights in the Traditional row house called Aoi Takasegawa under AOI Hotel Group. This is two storey row house, the hotel is spotless clean and spacious, and convenient location. Their staff are absolutely helpful, friendly and polite. The house sat right beside the Takase River, you could almost touch the sakura when it becomes full blossom from the window of the house, we went a week or two early before full blossom. We found Sakura buds only at the time. The house full of historic, but well equipped. Train station, shopping centres, restaurants all are walking distance. We are so enjoyed to stay in this hotel. highly recommended.

- Kate432015 (10/5): Spacious, Well-Located Hotel - Apartment style hotel that is really impressive....spotlessly clean, safe and in a great location in Kyoto. It feels like you are in a friend's apartment. Checking in was weird because you have to go to building next door and never saw person sitting at front desk (there for 3 nights) but the room was fabulous! The washing machine was a godsend. Lack of dining is not a problem, there are dozens of options within 5 minute walk. Have already recommended to friends!

- fore51 (10/5): Perfect Location - We had the pleasure of staying at this amazing hotel, and it was amazing in everyway. I am not too sure where to start. 1. The rooms were one of the biggest we have ever stayed in. There was a huge western bed which was big enough for my husband & I (both of us are 6ft tall). There was also a large tatami mat - so the room could comfortably sleep four people. The bathroom was also incredibly large and had a small bath overlooking the river. We also had a laundry room which had a second toilet. 2. The view over the Takasegawa River - we had floor to ceiling windows and a rather long window seat - which was perfect for planning the next days activities. 3. The staff were incredibly helpful. We asked for recommendations for restaurants and within half an hour we were given a "package" of four restaurants which included google map directions and descriptions of each restaurant. This level of service was given to us through our entire stay. we did wonder whether some of the staff were new, as they did seem nervous - but the level of service and eagerness to help made our stay so much easier. 4. Location - perfect. We were just down the road from the Gion Bridge and generally most of the sites were in walking distance (Gion and the market was 10 minutes walking, the Imperial Palace was 20 minutes - and we did a half day walking trip through various temples up to the Silver temple via the Philosophers Walk). We did need to take taxis to the Golden Temple, Tori Gates and Kyoto Station. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. It really is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in.

- Verified traveler (4/5): Be aware Crazy building owner - CRAZY building owner. If you are assigned to any room in the building next to the receiption. Please be aware of a crazy Japanese guy. We arrived at Aoi Kyoto at around 11am in the morning, it's was pouring rain, we settled everything and ready to explore the city around noon. we stood in front of the hotel building stone walkway to check the map 1more time. 5seconds later, I felt someone pushed me on the right, my natural instinct was moved to the left couple steps and said "Sorry". Then I turned right and saw a 40+ yr old grumpy Japanese male came out from the restaurant on the 1st floor of the building waving his arm to gesture me to move, then he followed with his broken English "MOVE! GO! Don't stand here" I replied "sorry, I am guest of the hotel" He turned his way to the hotel building, and said "Are you the owner of this building? I am the owner of the building!" I was so puzzled, I wanted to walk back inside to read the map since the rain is getting heavier. After couple steps, the Japanese guy turned to me again, and shout “I am the building owner, when I walk, you don't walk! Go!" I was like "Is this real?" He shouted again the same thing and I got so angry so I ran to the receiption next building. I told the lady at the front desk what happended, she just said "We did received some complains, maybe he is a weird guy”. Very unpleasant. He lives on the 2nd floor of the hotel and he is a chef from restaurant on the 1st floor, he ruined reputation of Japanese really.
- Africapaddy (10/5): Perfect location - We made a last minute booking for Kyoto and secured a room in this hotel. It’s actually more of an apartment as they don’t serve food. But we were aware of this so it wasn’t a problem. We loved it. I think there are only 4-5 rooms. We loved ours as it was spacious with a Great view over the river to the hills on the other side. No complaints at all and highly recommend it if you are happy to dine out all the time or make a snack in the room. Very friendly and most accommodating staff.
- roadtripper00 (10/5): Beautiful Spacious Apartment Hotel - Aoi was the highlight hotel of our trip to Japan! We booked room 101 for 4 nights, which is on the ground floor right next to reception. We had a beautiful balcony and view of the river from both the living area and the gorgeous bathroom. The in-unit laundry was an excellent amenity to have as we were 3 traveling together and in dire need of clean clothes after being out in the Kyoto heat all day. We traveled with my MIL, who we gave the separate bedroom and half bath to, while my husband and I took the 2 twins in the main room. This worked out perfectly and I highly recommend it for families. We will definitely stay here next time we are visiting Kyoto.

Walking distance to Gion, Yasaka shrine, Kiyomizudera (via Ninenzaka/Sannenzaka), shopping malls on Shijo-dori. Area was picturesque with a small canal and many sakura trees which looks beautiful during sakura season/spring. Service and support from the staff was wonderful.
- NoelChak (10/5): Beautiful Historic House Aoi Takasegawa - It is probably the best place to stay in Kyoto. Alongside the River Takasegawa, you can enjoy the nice view of all seasons of Kyoto, not to mention the Sakura season. A lot of lovely restaurants nearby. It’s definitely our first choice!

- Louise (10/5): Super stylish boutique hotel in quaint street - Gorgeous little hotel in an amazing location. In a quiet and quaint street only a few minutes walk from Gion and from 3 different train stations, very pretty and lots of little restaurants nearby. The hotel is very sophisticated, both in design and the technology in the rooms. The room was spotlessly clean, very comfortable and super stylist to boot. I have a bad back and emailed the hotel before asking for a Western bed. They wrote back immediately ensuring me that this would be the case and that they would add 2 soft toppers to the mattress and told me not to worry, everything would be taken care of, and it was.
- sailgirlfader (10/5): worth the money, order breakfast before you arrive - Room 401 is amazing, laundry, deck, comfort, incredible location. Not a lot of places for breakfast. Hotel offers breakfast, but you have to order 3 days before your arrival! This wasn't clear to us and so we missed out. If you miss it, you have to go to the train station for breakfast.

The room (#401) I stayed at Aoi Hotel Kyoto was perfect because, in addition to the two twin beds, it also had an enclosed tatami room for two people to sleep in. This room also comes with a small kitchen and dining area as well as a washer / dryer. Everything about this hotel was perfect. - Beautifully decorated room with clean comfortable beds / beddings, auto-fill bathtub. - Great amenities - Great smelling bath amenities (Tamanohada brand), fresh ground coffee / green tea bags, green tea candies, etc. - Good-sized terrace with the view of Kamo river & Higashiyama mountains. - Convenient location that's close to main attractions in Kyoto.. - Service: They helped make a reservation for a restaurant and also kindly put a chair in the bathroom for my grandmother.

- M Mak (10/5): Looking for similar hotel around world - Hotel is managed with heart, which can be seen from home-feel decoration, cleanliness, welcome gift arrangement, and best of all, the professional staff team. This time, i cannot get a room with Kamo Gawa river view will surely be my next reason to travel Kyoto and staying in Aoi Hotel again.
- JDEB (10/5): Perfect example of what a botique hotel should be! - This hotel is not to be missed if you are coming to Kyoto and want to be in the heart of the Pontocho area overlooking the river. The room we were in was clean, spacious (slept 3 with plenty of space) and the large bathroom was like a mini spa featuring a wonderful wooden soaking tub. The staff are superb and friendly. Every question we had about getting to and from a location or getting a taxi or even getting food for an early train was answered and if not immediately, it was researched and provided. The restaurant recommendations (and reservations!) they made for us were superb as well. Again, highly recommend this choice. Now we just want to come back in the summer!

- S (10/5): Excellent hotel in Kyoto - We loved this hotel and wished we had booked it for our entire stay in Kyoto vs the 3 nights we had. The hotel isn't large: 4 floors with 3-4 rooms per floor. We liked that we weren't in a massive building with other people. The room is spacious and set up like an apartment: microwave, fridge, hotplate, washer/dryer, etc. The room even had its own wifi. Location was also good for exploring the Gion area and the Nishiki market. Staff was polite and helpful, providing us with info on things to do and places to eat. Will definitely stay again.

Felt like living (it large) in Kyoto.
