Obwohl das Hotel kaum belegt war ,forderte man für einen nur zwei Stunden früheren Check in 400 Bath extra.Das Personal war insgesamt unfreundlich - die Herzlichkeit ,die man sonst aus Thailand kennt fehlt hier völlig..Der Zustand des Zimmers :Inakzeptabel,Wasserschaden an der Decke,fleckiger Teppichboden und ein Bad das mehr als nur eine Auffrischung benötigt. Frühstück und Hygenie: Frühstücksraum war unappetitlich mit schmutzigen Tischdecken. Das Frühstück selbst war erbärmlich und lieblos ,man konnte das aus den Gesichtern der Gäste ablesen. Treppenhaus wird Sperrmüll gelagert. Fazit : Ich kann jedem nur raten ,dieses Hotel zu meiden.Es gibt in der Umgebung weitaus bessere Hotels für das gleiche Geld. Das Preis Leistung Verhältnis ist unterirdisch,für den geforderten Preis erhält man ein völlig vernachlässigtes Haus mit einem Service der den Gast nur als Einnahmequelle sieht. Mein Aufenthalt war leider sehr enttäuschend.

- DAVID (6/5): - The buffet breakfast was very good, all of the staff were friendly and accommodating and the room and public areas were clean. The shower in our room could not be used. There was a large crack in the bottom of the bathtub where black water seeped in when using the shower. The hotel was full, so we were not able to change rooms.

- Joseph (8/5): - This was just an overnight stay in the provincial capital to meet friends for dinner and hang out a bit, as our home is about 30km away from town. The hotel is decent, a bit dated in design and décor but clean and like most Phayao hotels very inexpensive by Western standards. There are shops and a few small restaurants in the immediate area, and the Kwan Phayao lakefront is almost walking distance, though we didn't go to the lake as recent flooding in the area meant some restaurants were closed. In the hotel itself, the pool was closed for renovations, which was disappointing; the fitness center was open, and fairly large and well equipped. Breakfast was included but nothing really to "write home about."

- Sky (1/5): Would not stay here again - The staff including security were really nice. Great customer service from the receptionist. The hotel it self is quite old and run down. As we entered our floor we were greeted with 4 mouldy mattresses casually sitting in the hallway. In our room, there was hair on the floor in bathroom. Shower was not scrubbed at all, black fly poops all over. Black handprints on walls and ceiling, I’d assume that those are from the maintenance guys fixing lights and aircon according to the location of the prints, however cleaners did not clean them. Floor has clearly not been vacuumed properly. For the price I was charged staying here honestly not worth it at all. There’s better places to stay in if you care about cleanliness.

- Marc (8/5): Faire Preis-Leistung für kurze Aufenthalte - Das Phayao Gateway Hotel in Phayao ist ruhig gelegen. Das Zimmer (Superior Twin) war groß aber sehr schlicht und deutlich abgewohnt. Die Betten sind etwas durchgelegen. Sauberkeit und Aufgeräumtheit im ganzen Hotel könnten besser sein. Das Fitnessstudio ist ausgezeichnet. Das Frühstück war okay, ausgestattet mit dem nötigsten. Es gibt ausreichend Parkplätze auf dem Hotelgelände. Gemessen am extrem niedrigen Preis ist die Leistung okay und wir können das Hotel für kurze Aufenthalte ohne Komfort-Ansprüche empfehlen.

- Vedat (10/5): Wohlfühl Atmosphäre - Mein erster Besuch in Thailand und ich wurde so herzlich willkommen geheissen. Die Mitarbeiter waren sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Das Zimmer das ich bekam war eher ein altes noch nicht renoviertes Zimmer aber ich fühlte mich sehr wohl darin. Die Zimmer wurden täglich gereinigt und das gesamte Personal war sehr freundlich zu mir. Das Frühstück war stehts asiatisch und sehr schmackhaft. Ich danke dem ganzem Gateway Team für die schöne Zeit🙏☺️🎙️🎼🎶

- LifestyleStrategist (2/5): Terrible - This is one of the worst hotels I’ve stayed here in Thailand. The hotel is very old & very very dirty. In a real need for a total renovation. We canceled our stay early we’re charged a cancellation fee. The pool was out of service which is why we booked there in the first place. The breakfast was awful. Cold food. Cold coffee. Very little selection. Certainly NOT 4 star. Maybe one star at best & the price was a rip off. But the worst was we were sleeping under the aircon which had mould all around it so we had to stay without running the aircon. I used booking.com & as we needed to cancel our stay was a nightmare to explain to the staff that they need to help as the staff wanted me to contact booking.com. Anyway I would stay away especially for those with children.

- Kathy (4/5): A hotel in dire need of renovation - We only stayed one night on a stopover on our way back to Chiang Rai. There were plenty of shops and restaurants near the hotel and it was only a short walk to the lake. The rooms were large. This is a large business type hotel which has seen better days. Renovation is needed. There was mould around the bath and the rooms really need updating. We were allocated a twin room initially, when we had booked a double, so had to go back down to reception get this changed. The breakfast was poor. The advertised swimming pool was empty and this wasn't mentioned when we booked or checked in. The wifi and the electricity was patchy on our floor.

Room service brought nice bucket of ice on request Slept on box springs, I think the mattress might have been upside down even, very old mattress, very uncomfortable. Bathroom was semi clean. Room was very old and kind of smelly. One elevator was scarry, got inside and the doors went back and forth and wouldn't close, naturally I got off. Breakfast was stale and cold before 8 am.

- H.a.m (8/5): a pleasant hotel convenient situated - a very pleasant hotel on walking distance from the lake with the promenade. also close to the bus terminal. breakfast was simpel and no fresh fruit, in all other hotels we had next to the hotel is a club, Hollywood, when it closes at 03.00 am there is some noise at the parking lot in front of the hotel. a room at the backside could be beter. I don’t need clean towels everyday, but it would be beter if every day, toilet paper etc are filled up. that did not happen in our case.

My car was blocked in early in the morning because of tour vans parked behind my car. The halls were a bit dirty . There is no actual restaurant, only the included breakfast which was pretty good.

The shower was cold in the morning, we couldn't get the hot water to work. The breakfast buffet was fairly limited and our little one was sad there were no pancakes/waffles/french toast. There's a bar attached to the hotel, the Hollywood bar which had some fun live rock music going on and we adults enjoyed that in the evening. The fitness centre is also good. The lake view was beautiful though note it's not close. Oh, the swimming pool was also under maintenance so we were quite disappointed as it was super hot.

- martinaP5357II (6/5): Nice hotel with a few flaws. - There is no doubt that this hotel used to be a top hotel. You can see that from when you walk in to the lobby. But it is also obvious that the hotel has not been cared for as it should. That being said, the rooms are nice, but I would recommend the rooms with double bed as my family experienced novice problems in the rooms with the two single beds on the 10th floor. The breakfast is fine, it is not big but it has everything you need to be full. Overall I would recommend this hotel, the staff is friendly and at least one of them speak good English.

- RoryE (10/5): Top Value - The Gateway is a good find and a good location. One of the larger hotels in town yet still with a great price. Undercover parking for the motorbikes and easy access to the lobby/reception to complete our booking. Up to the 10th floor, great views out over this area of town and out over to the lake. The room was gi-normous and well laid out. With a pool and gym on the 4th floor to help cool down. A large dining area of the lobby for the buffet breakfast, standard eggs, coffee and juice for me. A tropical storm that night caught us out down at the lake, a call to the hotel and a courtesy car came to get us, very thankful for that.

- James (4/5): Location only redeeming feature - This is the only place near to bus station . There are strangely no taxis in Phayao . other hotels are a long walk away . Room was just OK . Bathwater only lukewarm . No English TV channels . Breakfast choices are v. limited & mediocre - strictly Asian . it is a long walk to lakefront entertainment area .
- John (8/5): Surprising Gem - The Phayao Gateway is probably the most well known hotel in Muang Phayao. The hotel is 10 stories tall with rooms starting on 5th floor. Snooker, massage, outdoor swimming pool, and a workout area are located on 4th floor. Rooms have a mini fridge, satellite TV, AC, and bathtub/shower combo. Fair warning about the shower head: it is really low (I'm 6'4" (196cm) and have to kneel to take a shower). It is a little strange that they have a higher price point for a room with a double bed than a room with two twin size beds. They offer the standard international buffet breakfast, and sometimes have an egg station. The offer free wifi as well. Lunch/dinner are served in the same area and seem popular and affordable, but I didn't sample them. The hotel has convenient access to the lakefront with a 10-15 minute walk. There are shops and restaurants in the immediate vicinity and the bus station is next door to the hotel. I would compare this hotel favorably to the Topland Hotel in Phitsanulok, but without the attached shopping mall and late night noise from the disco. For the price as well, you could do significantly worse. Overall, this hotel was quite lovely and above my expectations considering that it is not generally geared for Western tourists.

- Charlesschild (8/5): Great! - This is our first time to Phayao. We love this hotel. We booked a suite and the view is amazing. The service at check in was wonderful. The fitness is great for a hotel. The only down side is the internet is slow. Down load is 5mbs. But everything else is great. Also, there is a 7-11 right down the street.
- Jim (4/5): Central Phayao location - This hotel does not cater to Western tourists . Pros: Close to bus station & 7/11 . Room facilities are very limited . No in-room kettle , coffee , etc . Very low water pressure & limited hot water . Breakfast is poor - maybe fried eggs , toast & those dreadful Wiener "sausages" beloved by Thai hotels . The newish bar/restaurant strip on the lakeshore is a good 20 mins walk . There do not appear to be taxis or full-time in Phayao
- Oxenways (8/5): Everything I needed - clean and spacious room - I stayed there for one night with a tour group travelling through Northern Thailand. It's not a luxurious place but offers everything you would need for a short stay. Breakfast buffet was simple but good enough to load up for the start of the day. Phayao town and the lake can be explored on foot from here, so it is in a practical location.
- Clarence (6/5): Bathroom in need of attention - Exterior of the building was very appealing. The lobby very welcoming. The frontdesk people were outstanding. Check in was a issue free. The room was neat and clean. The view of the lake from the 9th floor was incredible. Everything was in good working order except for one of the night stand lamps. It worked however the socket was broken and the lamp shade was askewed. Then there is the bathroom which is in serious need of updating. My review would have been at least a 4 but the bathroom condition dropped it to a 3. The hotel had a nice breakfast buffet. Not hugh, but enough to make anyone happy. Check out was easy, returned the key to the front and on my way.
- TravelFanaticDD (6/5): Good service, average accommodation - Good things about this hotel: it is in a good location and walking distance to the lake and restaurants. The staff was very friendly and service overall was good. The rooms are nice and big and prices very reasonable. Bad things: nice big rooms but very dated. Some of the people in our group complained about rooms being extremely noisy. Cleanliness leaves much to be desired especially the bathrooms which can do with a proper cleaning. Breakfast was quite average. We tried the restaurant for dinner but there was a party going and we couldn't hear each other talk. Food was very average and the restaurant lacked atmosphere. Rather go elsewhere for dinner. Overall a budget hotel and that is what you get.

Average facilities and service. - The hotel, established many years ago, used to be one of the coziest place since it's located just a few steps away from the only department store and bus terminal. So it's convenient for transportation, food, or walking to the Kwan Phayao lake. However, the condition of the room is not as good as the price. Good for big business group or family vacation. Breakfast is fine.

It is a classic bad example of a high rise cookie-cutter commercial hotel - tired furniture, water-marked carpets, glaring neon lights, and a really terrible breakfast. Give it a miss -- there are better options in Phayao.
- 323mdcd (4/5): Big in size, average in amenities - The Gateway looks impressive from the outside considering the size of the town it's located in. Now let make one point before I delve into the hotels short comings. The staff were absolutely wonderful, friendly and sincere in there wanting to be of service. The hotel itself is what looks like a 70s era multi story building of around 10 floors, the standard rooms seem to be of an average 40 square metres with dated decor and hard beds. Cleanliness was on the boundaries of acceptability, it's quite difficult to tell due to the age of the fit out. The bathroom on the other hand is quite unacceptable, Cleanliness was not up to any standard, the tiles were dirty & the grout was black with mould. The fridge did not work & overall the room was what can only be described as tired. The cost for one night was 1100 Baht, that includes wireless internet access which was good & breakfast which was not. All in all a hotel that gives you what you pay for, a cheap room with reasonable amenities.
- TorretjedeCorse (6/5): Big bussiness hotel - No special hotel, staff is friendly and helpful. Very near the bus station, a bit far from the lake restaurants. One very good little vegetarian restaurant nearby. Look at website The happy cow for a picture so you can find it. No English sign.
- AliArchAU (6/5): Dated but comfortable & clean - I enjoyed my stay here. For the price you pay, you get a large, clean room with fresh linen and breakfast included. The breakfast is buffet style, and whilst it didn't have the bells and whistles that other hotels offer, it was still a nice way to start the day. The hotel is in the centre of town with a supermarket right across the road, and offered massage services and karaoke at night. having stayed in all 3 of the main Phayao hotels, I would recommend this one.
- MichaelW_Sydney (8/5): It's a proper hotel ... Thai style - First things first ... It is tired and slightly worn out. Part of the ceiling in the bathroom looked like it might fall down pretty soon, the carpet had been worn through in parts, the pillow case had a little tear forming, and water reached " warm ". And I really loved it. Charming in its way ... After staying in pretty pokey places in smaller towns I really enjoyed the massive, light and generous room. The staff were wonderfully polite and helpful. The breakfast was fine, and the location is good. Very near the bus station and a short walk to markets, food, and 15 minutes to the lake. I would certainly stay their again. Paid around 1100 baht for a big room.
- alant1955 (6/5): A Very Thai Hotel with more than most. - The Gateway hotel is the style of hotel that I have seen a lot of Thais enjoying. Like a lot of hotels in Thailand it offers exceptional value for money with a double room including breakfast for just over £20 a night. There is a large lobby area and a dining room of it where meals and drinks are served to your table (there is no "bar area"). In the evening there is live music on a small stage. All very typical of many Thai style hotels. Prices for food and drink are reasonable. The room was adequate, aging a bit, but everything worked, a basic TV, air conditioning and a shower over the bath. On the 4th floor there is a massage parlour plus a number of full sized snooker tables, some in private rooms. There is also a Karaoke bar which opens at 9pm I think. Breakfast was a little cold and the choice was limited but it did the job. It is a short walk down to the lake where there are some good places to eat and drink.
- EricF22 (6/5): Rough around the edges - We spent two nights while on a road trip to northern Thailand on the way up and back. The rooms are dated and not it the best of shape. Stained carpet and the ceiling over the bathtub in the room I stayed in the first night was crumbling and barely staying up. The desk staff was helpful and the evening in the Karaoke Bar was enjoyable as I made some new friends and contacts. The price was reasonable and the breakfast gave you a chose of Thai or American and was well prepared. Got a better room the next night and was in a little better shape. Also both nights we took a walk to the lake not far from the Hotel and found great restaurants and a very pleasant place to walk along the river. Lanterns being lite and kids setting off fireworks while families picnicking next to the river.
- RuAlAmsterdam (6/5): Simple hotel in downtown Phayao - Another stop during our drive through the Golden Triangle in the small city Phayao which is located on a large lake where catfish are cultivated. The hotel is simple and the rooms comfortable. Our room was on one of the upper floors and there are beautiful views on the lake. It is an easy walk to the lake, restaurants and the markets. The rooms are simple and comfortable and the air conditioning works well which was much needed as it was very hot when we were in Phayao. Unfortunately, the hotel charges for Wifi which is not what we had experienced at all the other hotels we stayed in during this trip. The breakfast is not as varied as other hotels but the food was of good quality. There was ample parking available. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- Sangsomset (6/5): Good basic Thai hotel at Phayao - Good basic thai hotel at Phayao. Clean rooms, friendly staff. One boy from staff drove us to kwan Phayao to eat in the evening. Really good thai food near the lake! Good tahi breakfast. Safe parking for motorbikes/car under the hotel. Also have a nightclub under hotel.
- engel60 (10/5): Friendly staff, great views, very nice hotel - I often visit Phayao and 'The Gateway Hotel' is still the best option for visitors to here, despite it beginning to show its age a little. The hotel is located close to the bus station and within a short walking distance of the lake and shops. The hotel is lovingly cared for and spotlessly clean, despite it beginning to show its age a little. Being a building of ten floors, the rooms offer wonderful views across the town and lake. The bedrooms are spacious with king size beds and a seating area, fully stocked mini-bar, cable television and air conditioning. They have en-suite bathrooms with proper bathtubs, as well as showers. The Gateway has an in-house massage facility, which can be had either in a massage room or in your bedroom. It also has a karaoke bar, a pool room, and Phayao’s best nightclub, ‘Hollywood’ attached to the premises. Don’t anyone worry about noise from the club; I am a light sleeper, but slept soundly and didn’t hear a thing. I am surprised by earlier comments made about 'The Gateway'. I would like to offer a special word of praise for the staff here, everyone I came into contact with was friendly, efficient, and went about their work with a smile on their face. Phayao is a town that has a lot to offer, yet doesn’t get too many visitors passing through. I would highly recommend a stay here.
