Guest Reviews
- Jim (6/5): - Small room, clean bed. All towels are clean but old, worn out. You will need to hand in the room key every time you leave the hotel. The location is convenient access to MTR in couple minutes walk.
- Alexei (8/5): - The hotel is in a great location, the staff are friendly but the rooms need refurbishment and the lift is very slow.
- Mike (6/5): - Very tired and dated. Thin towels, hot water took forever to arrive. Location was good though...
- Verified traveler (2/5): -
- Kiyoshi (8/5): - Room and security is not good so much, but stuff were very kind and warm. It is enough to sleep and spend for a few days.
- daniel (8/5): - The staff is friendly, special the man
- jandjfromhawaii (2/5): Honest Review - Not sure how this hotel got quite a few 5 star reviews but our experience was far from it. We didn’t even stay the full 5 nights that we booked due to the stiff, squeaky bed and musty smell in the room. Also, the AC barely blew cold and unable to connect to WiFi from our room.
Ultimately I’m rating 1 star because management refused to refund the 3 nights that we did not use (we had no issue paying for the 2 nights we did stay). Usually hotels compromise as goodwill gesture, but Purple Garden unfortunately did not. We ended up staying at a different 3 star hotel and the quality and comfort was 10x better.
- Jodie (4/5): - Stay here if you want to deal with a sore back from the stiff beds, warm AC, and mosquitoes biting you in the room. There is a strong musty smell and the room looks very outdated. This is NOT 3 star hotel. It’s like staying at a motel. Booked for 5 nights, checked out after 2 nights. Property refused to refund the unused nights. Stayed at a different 3 star property and the difference is astounding. So glad we checked out early.
- Matthew (4/5): Amazing staff. Great location. Uncomfortable - Service was outstanding. Staff was wonderful. However the fact that you have to shower in three inches of water and the air conditioning literally made me ill (very obviously hasn’t been cleaned in a decade) took away from the experience. The location is premier, right by an MRT stop and walking distance from Taipei Main Station. If you don’t care about comfort at all, its perfect.
- Dongmyoung (10/5): Kind, comfortable, classic - All of staffs are very kind. I love the elevator. It's really classic. Cosy and comfortable. It will be more grateful if the air conditioning and heating system works well.
- Verified traveler (8/5): If a little cheaper, it would be the best Hotel - Pros:
- bathroom was decently sized
- bed was fairly comfortable
- big desk to work at
- really convenient location; super close to the Zhongshan mrt, very close to family mart, very close to some good restaurants, pretty close to shopping malls
Cons:
- toiletries were small packets that are kind of junk to use
- the room smelt terrible. Needed to buy an air freshener to help with the smell
- key had to be returned to the front desk
- no power remained on when you left the room, so you could not charge anything; wifi did stay on
- slowest lift on earth
- Julien (6/5): - Hotel was alright for the price. The check in time is extremely strict and I wasn’t allowed to check in 20 min before their check in time, which isn’t usually a big deal in most hotels… I mean, 20 min… really? They offered to hold my luggage but they do not put it away in a room or a closet, they just leave it sitting in the middle of the lobby for anyone to take. Not a great first impression. Elevator is slower than Christmas, the hallway carpets desperately need to be redone, and the shower temperature fluctuates uncomfortably. Overall the room was clean though and in decent condition.
- Jian Haw (8/5): - Construction site nearby
- Kuo Cheng (4/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- HSIN CHANG (8/5):
- Hsiu Mei (6/5): - 還好
- CHIA HUNG (8/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Joseph (10/5): Nice hotel at a nice price - The staff was very friendly and the hotel was very clean. The location was great as well. Lots of good restaurants and cafes nearby
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very convenient
- febepb (6/5): Location and elevator - The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of transpo., cheap food and shopping.
We were four pax when we visited Taipei but sadly the elevator of the hotel cannot accommodate us even without our luggages.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great Place to Stay at Halloween! - I looked forward to staying at this hotel as it has become so famous in my home territory as the place where the murder happened that started the on-going riots in Hong Kong. I'm not afraid of ghosts so no problem for me. Nice staff and well located place. However, whenever you go out of the hotel you need to leave the key. However, on return staff never ask for any form of verification. That means that basically anyone could walk in, say the room number and then get the key. This would be a big problem if the staff don't recognise the guests and especially so with western tourists because tin the eyes of the Chinese staff, everyone looks the same. By the way, the air-con has no remote and the control is pretty vague; it's either too hot or too cold.
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- nazrul6898 (10/5): Beyond expectation. - For the price I was paying for, the hotel is beyond expectation.
Room is spacious, clean and simple. Good toiletries are provided. Green tea bag and water kettle is also available should you want to make your own hot drink at night. The TV channels are a lot. Mostly non-English. There are some channels in English.
The receptionists can speak some English. The best part is they try to speak English however little to make you feel welcome.
Best of all is the location. It is in front of R5 exit from the Zhongshan Underground mall. The location gives proximity to Taipei Main station (so it is easy to get to airport MRT, the train station and high speed rail station). The hotel is also just some feet away from Zhongshan MRT station, giving you access to the Red and Green Line. These two lines are the key lines for you to explore Taipeinwith minimal station transfers.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (4/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- akikoe606 (8/5): Good Location for all activities - This places is very close to Zongshan station (中山) and you can also use Zongshan metro mall from Taoyuan Airport MRT station and Main Taipei Station. Use Exit R4. You can see sign in Purple ( of course! )after you get out under ground. Taipei under ground is so clean and safe for woman solo travellers even around midnight. Family Mart is cross the road. You have to leave a key every time you go out and this places is open for 24 hours. Mainly Chinese speaker but you can use little English at reception. All of stuff are friendly and helpful. My room was opposite side of EXIT and get really noisy after 6:30am. Room size are good and I would recommend someone looking for budget hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): Mosquitos! - I'd like to rate everything about this hotel more than average, except for several mosquitos which annoyed us all through the night. Funny for winter, in a place without any canals or ponds around. We swatted three, but there were more. Bummer.
Otherwise, a nice and friendly hotel.
- Simpson (8/5): Very close to metro good for Single traveler. - Very close to metro good for Single traveler. Room is small as expect but the price is very good
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- maRIEANNE (10/5): - THE ROOM IS VERY CLEAN. THE STAFF ARE VERY ACCOMODATING. THE LOCATION IS VERY GOOD.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Keith (8/5): - It was a great location for me. Metro very close
- Wen Ling (8/5): -
- 286Hazel286 (10/5): Great Location, food everywhere, great hotel staff. - Stayed 3 nights at Purple Garden and found the hotel to be well-located with many local eateries, restaurants and shopping centres around. The staff is very friendly and helpful and converse in Mandarin and simple English. Rooms are comfortable and clean and of reasonable size. Very wonderful place to stay. The only thing I found lacking (and it is really just a small matter) is that they only provide tea bags in the room and bottled water, no coffee, so just bring your own or buy from the many convenience stores around. Reasonably priced hotel and good value I feel. I have gone to Taipei many times before and stayed in many budget hotels, this seems to be the best so far. At Taipei Main Station, just use the underground path and look for Exits R4 or R5 which is just next to the hotel. On my first day of arrival, I used the street level to get to the Hotel and it just took me through one big round, when I could have just used the underground path and exit through R4 or R5. Purple Garden is highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Yuh Sheve (8/5): -
- Brendon (10/5): Highly recommended for solo travellers and couples - A cosy and affordable little establishment. Strategically located around local eateries, shopping malls and ZhongShan mrt station. It's within walking distance to Taipei Main Station but just far enough from the hustle and bustle of city traffic. There's even a park directly in front of the hotel entrance if you just wanna chill.
- Joe (8/5): Good stuff, but slightly old hotel - The hotel location is right in front of the R3 entrance (Zhongsan Underground Street), which is just 4-5 minutes walking to the MRT station. There is a Family Mart within 100m and many fast foods (McDonald, KFC, Subway etc) within walking distance (5-10 minutes).
The staff is very friendly, check-in/ out process is FAST and hassle-free.
Everything is good except the hotel condition, it's slightly OLD.
If you like NEW hotel, please skip this. Otherwise, it's a good choice for budget travelers...
- noelledeg (10/5): Charming family-owned hotel - Stayed here with my mother on our birthday trip. The beds were very comfortable and hotel was clean. Located midway between Taipei Main Station and Zhongshan Station, it can be a bit of a walk if you're used to being driven around all the time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Descent enough - They don't provide shampoo or shower soap/gel at all. The bathroom is fairly nice and clean. Price is comparable with other hotels in the area.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Recommended - Exelently convenient location.
- MirkoLiang (6/5): Good location, clean - The location is strategic: close to Zhongshan subway station, hence in Zhongshan area with plenty of places to eat and shopping, it can also be reached by one of the exits of the underground Zhongshan metro mall (exit R4 or R5 if I remember correctly), which connects Taipei Main Station and Zhongshan. So if you are in Taipei Main Station and you fancy a little walk instead of getting one more time the subway you can get in there in no time.
Now about the hotel itself. Not bad, not one of the newest but still in good conditions. The bed was comfortable, clean overall.
What bothered me the most was that in the bathroom there was no place to set your stuff while taking the shower, I mean come on, anything would do just give me something to place my soap.
The hotel staff was friendly and the reception is 24h opened.
A little too expensive for what it is.
- S Lai (8/5): - Good location between 2 subway stations with 7Eleven and family mart and local foods and major shopping nearby. it is a bit far away from Airport Express Station, so we ended up calling a cab for NT80 to station.
- Sarah (8/5): Great Affordable Hotel - This was a great, affordable hotel near both Zhongshan and Tapei Main Station. The room was clean and comfortable. They also provided breakfast (sandwich and coffee). I would definitely stay here again.
- Wib00nL (8/5): Good value for money
The room is not small and pretty new. All equipment works well. There's a hair dryer in room. Elevator is rather small and slow but I rarely use it, so no problem. Good location. Getting up the elevator from the exit R5 of the MRT connected passage (Metro Mall) then you'll see the hotel in front of you. Breakfast is just to help you survive but the porridge rice is wonderful, it soft and smooth. The hotel provides coffee and bread. The operators speak English well.
- raymondgonzales1978 (10/5): Best Hotel Near Taipei Station - 7 Minute Walk from Station! - The Purple Garden Hotel is a perfect hotel near Taipei Train Station. First and foremost, if you email the hotel directly, they can answer any question you have within 12 hours. They staff is friendly. The rooms are nice and I loved the decor. I took the bus from Taipei International Airport and walked to the hotel in less than 7 minutes. I would highly suggest booking in advance because it was sold out every weekend I wanted to come. For the price you are paying, this hotel is perfect. Another plus is the subway is right next to the entrance of the hotel. There is also a Family Mart about 1 minute away that is 24 hours. I also walked about 10 minutes for a 24 hour McDonald's as well. Maids are efficient and always eager to clean your room. I loved this place!

- Bee Guat (4/5): - Love the location, as it near one of the exit from MRT station. But the area in the room was very small, same as bath room , if too big size I don't think he/she can fix.
- wodeb (8/5): Simple cheap Asian hotel - Basic and cheap. Wouldn't go on my honeymoon but if you have done a lot of solo travel in Asia you have seen worse. View from window was a sprawl but it's very close to the station and cheap. Clean but beige! The on suite was nice and water was always hot and with right pressure at all times that I used it, was on third floor.
Most other guests were Taiwanese/Chinese/HK so breakfast was a bit unfamiliar for me. I stuck to the sweet sliced white bread with crumbly butter and jam. and weak percolated coffee. But there are plenty of places around to get a second breakfast, you would still be in quids in. The only cheaper option in the area is a hostel.
- 334vincenty (6/5): Just a simple hotel - The hotel location is just above Zhongshan Station (exit R4)and just a short walk away from Taipei Main Station. Do go out and explore the surroundings for really delicious meals instead as the cafeteria only serves breakfast with very limited choice of food (bread and porridge only). The room is quite small and simple but good enough. Oh yar! Do bring along your toiletries.
- conniel299 (4/5): Was just ok - The room was quite small. There were no toiletries included, not even handsoap in the washroom. Another funny thing was that the door and wall for the bathroom was frosted glass, so you get the whole voyeurism experience. The bed was hard as a rock. The positive was that it was right next to the metro and a. shopping area.
- suannchong (2/5): We're supposed to stay 3 nights. I asked for a refund. - We were supposed to stay 3 nights at Purple Garden Hotel. The photos on their website looks okay and most comments on TripAdvisor suggest that the place was good. We booked the place. When we got to the hotel, we were surprised at how close it was located - just right next to a MRT entrance/exit. However, when we manage to check into our room - it looked VERY, VERY aged and used, the sheets are worn and have stains on them, the room smelled really badly. The bedside lamps flickers occasionally and 5 minutes later, we were out and went down to ask for a new room. They gave us another room but it was the same - very aged, smelly, and had moulds on the headboard and ceiling!!! The place was just very eerie, scary, and old. We had to put up there one night (with our lights on) because it was a long weekend in Taipei and we couldn't find a new place in time. Thankfully they refunded our money for our second and third night. Please don't make this place your accommodation in Taiwan just because you want to save a little. It's a beautiful country with much much MUCH MUCH better places to stay at. Oh, they also don't provide shampoo or body wash - expects you to buy/bring your own.
- JVS06 (6/5): Basic, clean, very near Taipei Main Station MRT - As it was new year's eve, we didn't have much choice. I wrote directly to this hotel and they confirmed my reservation. They can reply in English but allow some delay in response. The room is clean, small and basic. It's location is ideal as it is just next to Exit No. R4 of the Zhongshan Metro Mall from Taipei Main Station MRT. It's also a stone's throw away from Nanjing Street which has lots of shops. If you don't read Mandarin, you would have difficulty finding it as the hotel name is written in Chinese Characters. The closest MRT is Taipei Main Station. Walk towards Zhongshan Metro Mall and take exit R4. As you step out from the exit, look left and the hotel is right there. There is a Family Mart nearby. The receptionist speak very little English. Breakfast consist of porridge and no coffee or tea. Free wifi is available. It also has a washing machine and a dryer which was helpful. It's a very modest hotel with great location.
- Jeff0088 (8/5): Worthwhile & very convenient - This hotel is located at R4 exit of Zhong Shan Metro Station Exit / Entrance. It's really a good deal for the budget minded and the hotel is quite decent. There is a vegetarian restaurant along the stretch of roads too. =)
I will definitely be opting this hotel in future if I travel to Taipei again.
- bmay55 (4/5): Not as expected - This hotel is located just outside the Zhongshan MRT Exit R4. The hotel was also kind to let us leave our luggage at the dining area before we could check-in. We saw good reviews of this place, however, it was rather disappointing.
We booked 2 twin and 1 queen rooms, only the queen room at Lvl4 had good working connection to WiFi, clean beds and toilet. Our room also at Lvl4 was a twin room, one of the beds was right beside the glass toilet wall. The wall was dirty for the toilet side but because it was glass, it felt dirty and unhygienic from the bed. Our room couldn't connect to WiFi, the AC wasn't working as well. Bed sheets and towels were grayish with some black dots.
The lift starts at Lvl2 and ends at Lvl5, so my friend had to carry luggage up to Lvl6 twin room, no WiFi there as well and beds were mere thin mattresses. The ceiling was just few inches above their heads.
We checked out after staying one night. Thankfully the owner though wasn't happy, didn't give us much trouble for our checkout request. We heard calls, so we hope they manage to fill up the rooms.
We found a much better place in Ximending with just a small top-up. I recommend for this price, there are definitely better places elsewhere if you plan your trip early.
- Siauching (10/5): Great location and affortable price - Just situated 2 mins from the train station and located near to cafes.
Welcoming receptionist and superb service.
The price is really affordable for Taipei and the room is nice and clean.
Highly recommended for a budget stay in Taipei and if you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Xi Men Ding.
If you missed the breakfast, there are Taiwanese breakfast shops just nearby the hotel and they are cheap and good!
They allow you to keep your luggage if you reach before check-in time or your return flight is late after the check-out. The receptionist were really helpful in helping us to call for a cab to the airport as well.
- AdamP766 (8/5): If you're looking for inexpensive and location this is ideal - I have come to Taipei many times. The Purple Garden is a very exact type of hotel. It is not the most luxurious, but if you're looking for a inexpensive hotel a short walk from the Taipei main bus and train station, then this is the best I've found.
Literally you walk 7 minutes and you're there from the station. There is easy transport with a metro nearby. Movie theater, restaurants etc.
So, the pros of staying here is the cost (very inexpensive compared to other hotels) and the location.
On the downside, the rooms are only moderate. Beds are a bit too hard. No closet (but has hooks on the wall for hanging clothes). Breakfast Chinese style not American/English breakfast. Kind of like similar to any of the hotel chains in the USA on quality (like a Best Western, Days Inn etc.) I've never seen anything bugs in my room or had them be dirty though. And they do have WIFI and Air conditioning.
I guess it depends mostly on what you're looking for, but hopefully this gives enough data to help decide if this would be the type of place for you.
- susanwais (8/5): Great location in city center - We booked this hotel after reading the comments in Tripadvisor. The location is great. Just next to the subway exit which is very convenient. Room is clean. Aircond works well. Bed is nice to sleep. Bathroom is clean with transparent glass. Flat screen tv with many channels. Breakfast is simple with porridge and condiments. They have luggage storage available. Lift is located on first floor with max 3 adults only. It is worth the price we paid overall and it is not a problem finding the hotel. Will recommend friends to stay here if you are in budget.
- mollythefish (8/5): location is good . - The hotel is in between zhong San station and Taipei main station. If we are exit R4 or R5. If u exit from r4 the hotel is just at your left side. And behind a coffee joint call 85c . The main entrance is small.
The hotel is about 10mins walk from Taipei main station. ( underground )
Room size acceptable. Non smoking building ( all Taiwan hotel ).
staffs are helpful enough.
Breakfast OK. Taiwan porridge. Room is clean.
