Guest Reviews
- Jean-Jacques (8/5): séjour agréable en famille - standard aménagement PMR
- Iain (10/5): Wonderful and friendly hotel - The fabulous location right on the beach. Nothing
- Daniel (10/5): Stunning views, friendliest staff and best meal on the island! - The location and views and on location restaurant can’t be beat! The rooms were comfortable and good space for us even with extra luggage and an infant bed! The shower in our room wasn’t enclosed so water got on the bathroom floor.
- Alan (9/5): - Breakfast excellent, proper Scottish breakfast. Location superb, right on water. Nothing really.
- Patricia (10/5): - Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff
- Catherine (10/5): Lovely people good food et lovely place ♥️♥️♥️♥️ - Le personnel

- Magic Flute (10/5): A Wonderful Winter Stay Full of Warmth and Islay Magic! - Our stay at the Port Charlotte Hotel on Islay was absolutely wonderful from beginning to end! The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, always going the extra mile to make us feel comfortable and completely at ease. Their warmth and attention to detail created such a homely atmosphere — we truly felt like part of the family.
The restaurant was a highlight, serving delicious local dishes that celebrated the flavours of Islay beautifully. The chefs clearly put their hearts into every plate. And the bar — what a treat! The selection of local whiskies was fantastic, and we loved trying a few new favourites each evening.
Our room was spotless, cosy, and perfectly appointed with everything we could possibly need. Waking up each morning to those lovely views was such a joy. The location couldn’t have been better either — ideal for exploring the island, with easy access to places like Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, and Bowmore Distilleries. We also adored visiting the charming Windswept Farm Shop, reached through meadows and hills dotted with grazing sheep and Highland cows — pure magic!
All in all, it was an unforgettable experience, and we can’t wait to return. Better than this, dunno!

- Paul (10/5): Beautiful hotel in an ideal location on the beautiful island of Islay - Great location, rooms were modern and clean. The food was excellent and there was a well considered selection of Islay whisky. The staff were exceptional, friendly and helpful and made the visit thoroughly enjoyable.

- Mark (10/5): - Great staff and restaurant
- Lucinda (10/5): - Beautiful views. Very welcoming and helpful staff in the hotel and bar.
- Kenichi (10/5): - Comfortable hotel, perfect for soaking up the spirit of Islay.
We had a fantastic stay at this hotel. It's the ideal place to experience the unique atmosphere and character of Islay.
The restaurant was a true highlight. The chef is a master—the food was exceptional and a huge step above typical British fare. We especially recommend the smoked kipper for breakfast; it was absolutely delicious.
Live music by a band at the bar on every Wednesday and Sunday.
- Heinrich (8/5): -
- Jan (10/5): - Best hotel from three we stayed at on Islay (staff, room, bar)
- Bill (8/5): -
- Sophia (10/5): - Absolutely fantastic hospitality, a warm welcome, delicious food and very comfy rooms. Also enjoyed a paddle on the lovely beach in front of the hotel. Staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful, we would not hesitate to book again.

- caroline (9/5): Last minute decision to come to Islay as weather was good. Picked this hotel because of location and reviews, lived up t - Very friendly. Great location. Nice staff. Excellent food. Nothing
- Keith (10/5): - Cute hotel with great service and nice rooms in a cute village. Not far from Bruichladdich which was convenient as we were cycling.
- Bernadette (10/5): Alles Top - ein wahres Highlight - wir kommen wieder -
- Pam (9/5): I very much enjoy staying at the Port Charlotte. This last time was my third time - The staff was very welcoming. The location is awesome and the pub is so fun. Nothing
- julie (5/5): Good location/dinner but accommodation massively overpriced for what is provided!! - The views were stunning
The food served in the bar in the evening was good
Staff at reception friendly and welcoming This hotel is massively over priced for the standard of accommodation provided. £345 per night is a total rip off!
The room was underinvested and needs a big upgrade. The blinds were poorly fitted so the light woke us very early.
The carpet had stains on it
The fruit served at breakfast was woeful. Tinned peaches and pineapple do not go with the piece tag of £345 per night. When we asked for fresh berries and /or melon we were dismissed by the waitress!
- Grace (9/5): Superb -
- Anne B (6/5): - I felt snubbed by one of the staff members.
- Mary (8/5): Very good -
- Bret (9/5): Great central location if you are visiting more than just the Port Ellen distilleries. - As we were transiting to Islay on the ferry, Rob from the hotel called to ask if we wanted to reserve a table for dinner since I had neglected to do that from the booking confirmation email. It was very helpful that Rob was proactive in reaching out to ensure we had a convenient place to eat each night. The location was excellent, particularly since we were able to book Stuart to take us to/from our Port Ellen distillery tasting experiences and he recommended a visit to Portnahaven where we did see some seals in the harbor. Finally, the clean clear water off the hotel beach was perfect for a quick chilly dip one afternoon. The tiles near the tub in our room were cracked and a tad loose, so a little disappointed with that. Also, water pressure wasn't great, but that seemed to be a common theme across Scotland so we got used to it. Finally, some of our fish dishes were very much over-cooked to the point of the halibut being dry. We were told that was per Scottish / UK food safety rules, and yet in Glasgow we were able to get med-rare beef so that was confusing.
- Sarah (9/5): Islay's finest - Beautiful views and great dog walks. Delicious food and wonderful staff. A very comfortable and welcoming hotel, also for the dog. The room was quite hot and it was a long way up a lot of stairs with the dog and all the luggage.
- Stuart (9/5): Superb -
- karen (8/5): - Rooms small an needed updating. Broken floor tiles in bathroom. Great friendly staff
- Clare (9/5): Such a lovely hotel in a perfect location. Friendly staff and clean. A bit pricey but think that’s just island prices! - Clean , friendly staff, amazing dinner menu, great location Price!
- Clerkinj (9/5): Superb - Had a lovely stay, the rooms had super comfortable beds with a sea view also. The bar was a lovely place to retreat to for a drink, they had a really good selection of craft beers and ciders. The food served for dinner and breakfast was great quality too. Bath tub showers are the worst. Unfortunately there's very little else in Port Charlotte.
- Rajat (10/5): had a wonderful stay at the hotel in Port Charlotte, enjoying stunning views, delicious meals, and exceptional service f - I had such a lovely time at the hotel, which is perfectly located in Port Charlotte with stunning views from my room. Everything was spotlessly clean and maintained to a very high standard.
I also had dinner there for two nights, and it was fantastic! Do try the Fish & Chips and the Tiramisu :). The bar had a great selection of whisky, beer, and wines, making it the perfect spot to unwind. The full scottish breakfast was equally delicious.
But what really made my stay special was the amazing staff. A special shoutout to Lorna—she has a way of making every guest feel at ease and at home. Her friendly chats and laughter created such a warm atmosphere. I also appreciated how the staff went above and beyond. I was feeling a bit hungry while sitting in the lounge, thinking if I should ask for a table, and someone kindly checked in on me. Before I knew it, they had made space for me at the bar and brought me a bowl of chips! Thanks also to Ajith and Divya in the restaurant, who were incredibly attentive and really made me feel welcomed.
I would say overall Port Charlotte has a very a cozy and inviting vibe. I would love to come back and stay here with my family next time!
- Ian (9/5): Very nice, clean, well located hotel with excellent service levels. - Location, views, restaurant facilities and food. Thought the music night band were a bit dreary
- Bruce (9/5): With the possible exception of the music on Wednesday night I had an absolutely wonderful time. - Terrific breakfast and excellent service. Just right. More milk and butter!

- Craig (8/5): Nice hotel. - Food was very good, staff very friendly Bathroom layout was poor, seal on the shower panel not working

- Malcolm (9/5): Superb - Super location. Staff were exceptional. Great pint of Guinness. Always a joy to stay here. Room with a desk always a bonus when working. Out of season the price could have been kinder, but will not stop me booking again if possible.
- Ian (10/5): A wonderful classy and beautiful hotel, the staff make you ao welcome - Welcoming, charming and warm Nothing

- Joonsik (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kalia (10/5): Lovely place to stay in Islay. - Great views of the bay from our room. Friendly and helpful staff. No elevator so have to carry bags to your room. This was fine for me, but could be a problem for some.
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional -
- Massimiliano (10/5): Stunning place in the best part of Islay - The location is exceptional, we loved Port Charlotte and we had really good days in this hotel Nothing to say here
- Charles (10/5): Great experience highlighted by the bar, view, staff, food. Just a fantastic experience and will definitely be going ba - Great location with unbelievable view from room, incredibly friendly staff, fantastic bar and whiskey selection, excellent food. Nothing not to like

Outstanding & consistent food.
- Richard (8/5): Very enjoyable. - Staff were very friendly and the food, breakfasts and dinner, was excellent.
Great location.
Very good selection of Islay whisky available in the hotel bar. Hotel was very expensive, but that is partly due to it's island location I think.
- Sara (10/5): Beautiful hotel in fantastic location - Everything. Location, friendliness of the staff (Lorna and the team are great hosts), room (large and comfortable with a very nice view), food, the cute bar where we'd have drinks in the evening, the great selection of Islay whiskies. We had a fabulous time in Islay and the Port Charlotte Hotel definitely played a bit part in it. Would definitely recommend and go back Only that we couldn't stay longer!
- Ruth (10/5): Exceptional - Great staff, especially Lorna and Kate..Kitchen staff are very efficient.
Loved the bar with live music.
I especially loved all the artwork from Scottish artists.

- Carol (10/5): fabulous views, wonderful food. - The location was beautiful. We gave our friends the rooms with the really spectacular views of the ocean and they absolutely loved it. We were a group of 10 and the staff was so incredibly nice. It was just a great experience.
- Caico (10/5): Hope i get to atay here again sometime soon! - The staff is amazing. Very efficient and super friendly. The rooms are very comfortable and the restaurant is top knotch.
- Scott (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the hospitality. The meals in the restaurant were very well prepared. The pub was charming. Convenient to the distillery we wanted to visit.
- Brock (9/5): Beautiful cozy hotel in a small waterside town on Islay. Great people, great food, great whisky. - Breakfast options are limited but tasty and well executed. The staff was always friendly and helpful. The trail between Port Charlotte and Bruichladdich is a great little walk! Nothing to complain about with the hotel itself; it's a beautiful location with great views and great people. Make sure you have your food and tourism plans sorted in advance, as reservations and transit options can be limited.
- Adam (10/5): Already planning the next trip - We arrived at Port Charlotte on our honeymoon and were warmly welcomed by the fantastic hotel manager, Lorna. The local seafood available in the restaurant is delicious and a great range of whisky’s at the bar too! Clean and comfy room with lovely traditional features. Can’t wait to come back!
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable, superb location, spotlessly clean. All the staff without exception were very friendly, helpful, and just the right level of attentive. Nothing
- Isaac (9/5): Superb -
- Daphne (9/5): Lovely - Beautifully situated and cosy A little overpriced
- Gillian (9/5): Fantastic hotel with a welcoming and friendly vibe. Can’t wait to return. - Superb small hotel where the staff are excellent. Perfect location beside a small sandy beach so ideal for swimming. Special shout out to Lorna and Madeleine who made us feel so welcome. No complaints at all except perhaps a little on the expensive side. That said, we appreciate things cost more on an island. The location and wonderful staff made it feel like good value .
- Drew (8/5): Lovely stay on Islay at Port Charlotte - Comfy bed & excellent breakfasts. The dinners we had there were also superb. Throughout our 5 day stay the service we received was excellent. The staff were all very friendly, approachable and helpful - especially Lorna. Albeit the bed was very comfortable, the room was somewhat pokey and a little disappointing for the price.
- Neveen (10/5): Exceptional - The staff are friendly cooperative and helpful
Which you actually need on that island
The rooms are spacious
Bed is comfortable
- May (10/5): The location and view was amazing, food and services were great and the staff were wonderful - The staff from the moment we walked through the door were welcoming, helpful and smiling. They showed us to our room, showing us the facilities on route and telling us about the service, times of breakfast etc. There was a back door entrance which we could take the dog out for walks. The restaurant was comfortable, again the staff were wonderful and the food was delicious. The bar was also very comfortable, selection of drinks was great, live music twice a week and again the staff were great. The location and view over the loch was amazing Nothing
- Alan (9/5): Expensive but the staff and quality of food made it worth every penny, would 100% recommend - Food in the restaurant was outstanding 10/10, the staff were incredibly friendly 10/10 Hotel is a little tired in places
- Gemma (10/5): Wonderful staff - The staff were wonderful, really welcoming and attentive.
The location is great with amazing views over the coast. There is another hotel over the road with a bar and restaurant, and a lovely seafood place just down the road.
The hotel food was great, albeit pricey and a little repetitive after 4 nights.
The live music made for an excellent evening. Bed was a standard double which felt small
- Jennifer (10/5): Lovely stay in a quiet community. Excellent bar and restaurant on the property and great patio in the back to take a dri - The hotel is situated in a little bay with gorgeous views of the water. We had a lovely room with a water view. The rooms were spotless and nicely appointed. If you’re going to do the distilleries tours, just be mindful of the distances from Port Charlotte to the other parts of the island. We had a tour guide who arranged everything for us so it wasn’t a problem. Nothing to do with the hotel itself though!
- Martha (10/5): - The staff was incredible at Port Charlotte and made our stay a real treat. Thanks to Lorna, David and everyone else! We would definitely love to stay another time.
- Ken (10/5): Exceptional - Lorna the manager treated us like VIPs or long lost family. The pub and whisky selection is amazing as were the whisky enthusiast guests. The food and variety at the restaurant were equally superb.
- Narayan (7/5): Good - It was very far away but that’s not a complaint it was just hard to get around without a car
- Carmen (10/5): - The staff, from Lorna to Magdalene and the owner were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We truly felt at home!
We hope to return someday!
- Clive (10/5): Brilliant as always -
- Julia (6/5): - Convenient location.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pamela (10/5): Excellent, can’t wait to return - Beautiful position, brilliant bar and atmosphere , all staff excellent and could not do enough for us Nothing
- Gareth (6/5): Pleasant -
- Bryan (8/5): Great hotel and friendly staff. - Really nice hotel with friendly staff and the views were spectacular even on a wet and windy day. :-) Nothing, all good.
- Kimberley (8/5): Great stay - It was a very comfortable nights stay in the hotel and was relatively quiet. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating; and the area in general was great. The facilities in the room were grand as a well. The parking at for the hotel itself wasn't great and I struggled to find a space that was available. I also waited around 45 minutes for my food- however it was very busy and the staff were really friendly.
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Ramon (9/5): Comfortable and warm - Great hotel, great location, with warmest of staff. Enjoyed evenings in the bar, where Islay visitors come together! It is a place to recommend. I am sorry that i missd out on the BBQ, but with -1C i have to come back in summer(s)..
- Ronald (8/5): Very good -
- Jason (10/5): - The staff were awesome and so helpful. Giving us excellent recommendations and introducing us to locals that expanded our experience.
