• Satisfied customers (7/5): Value for money. - The Ravelston was good for a short stay and would book again, staff were friendly and the room was clean and tidy, the food was very good also. The bar was rather noisy.

Need to know this is a pub, so expect loud music until late at the weekends. No hot water, so ended up having cold showers. Difficult to find staff during the day, other than in the bar.

• nisdan (4/5): Avoid if you want a good nights sleep. - Stayed for 2 nights, in room 2, mattress was horrible felt springs coming through, not comfortable at all. Room was okay, TV, tea/coffee okay size however the noise from the pub was ridiculous they didn’t stop till 11pm and was like sleeping in the bar. It’s more a pub than accommodation with only 6 rooms so it’s like an after thought.

Bathroom facilities were nice and the downstairs pub was great and the staff were all reallt nice There was a smell in our room perhaps from.the toilet. There was a wedding or something on and it was very loud until midnight. It did quiet doen after that.

No working wifi in room, very noisy fans/air conditioning from downstairs. Bed was ridiculously too soft.

No breakfast offered and was told that they don’t serve it anymore, the bar area looked like a home for the unemployed.

Offhand rather than welcoming. Left to own devices largely. Could do with more staff. A pity because rooms were very nice.
• A2827ICrebeccak (10/5): Great lunch for a large party - Great lunch, party of 10, 7 adults and 3 children. Visited for lunch with family. The service was great with friendly staff. Most of us had 3 courses. The food was outstanding, freshly made, large portion sizes and delicious. We stayed for around 2 hours as the children took a little longer to eat, we also had a baby in a pram and they had arranged suitable space for our group
• Alan (3/5): Would not recommend and very bad value for money. - Central location for the event we were attending. The rooms are very small and cold. I had to go and ask about the heating at 6.30 on a January night to be told it was on a timer and that they would put it on boost…surely the timer needs to be set earlier. The bed was very uncomfortable, old sunk mattresses. And although the bathroom seemed recently fitted there was an unacceptable amount of black mould in the shower.

The en suite bathroom was well appointed although the toilet needed to be flushed a couple of times. The shower worked well. The service in the restaurant was slow, we had to wait a long time for our meal even though the restaurant was not busy. The food was very good though.

No one was at the reception and no one answered the phone. This made the stay uncomfortable and unsafe. I would not recommend this hotel based on my experience.

There was nobody downstairs at all at 8.30- no breakfast was on offer ( which had been offered) We were left puzzled and disappointed. We stayed until 930 but nobody turned up and the bedroom was still cold. This is not acceptable . I don't like writing negative reviews but in this case it was deserved. I have finally responded to booking.com's constant requests for a review.
• Catriona (8/5): A good stay overall - The size of the room was very spacious and the bathroom had a roomy shower and was very modern. Lovely service by the waitress in the restaurant at dinner. There was only one bedside light on our bed. No toiletries were provided in the shower. No breakfast was available, although the “ good Breakfast “ was mentioned in the booking response.

Lamps need replaced. A fresh dusting would be good. Carpet definitely wasn’t hoovered. The smell of fish from kitchen was overpowering. Something smelly in room to mask smell would have been welcoming. Bathroom modern but again attention to detail needed. Shower edging mouldy. Tiling needing grouting. Wasn’t aware that breakfast wasn’t included in price. Website stated free breakfast. Breakfast itself was good. Bigger handle cups would be better use but for £125 a night plus breakfast itself definitely not good value for money… read reviews before booking

• rhonae35 (6/5): Nice food, not great customer service - Had a meal here last night and although the food was lovely the service was terrible. We waited several minutes to be seated to our reserved table, no one came so we sat ourselves down, there seemed to be one member of staff serving the entire restaurant which was quite busy. Finally our order was taken by this rushed member of staff, meal and drinks delivered and server disappeared. Within 20 minutes we saw the lady behind the public bar rush back and forth from the bar to get food to serve in the bar, no sight of server in restaurant, suddenly there were 3 younger members of staff coming in and out of the kitchen with food, then they disappeared. Finally we had to ask the lady at the bar to get someone to give us our bill, then again to ask someone to bring a card reader, all 3 members of staff seemed to have vanished. Although food was lovely, the lack of service in restaurant when clearly well staffed is an issue and I would think twice about returning which is a shame.

• Andrew (5/5): Totally dissatisfied - Room and toilet were spacious Heating went on at 4pm and off again by 10pm, which left the room freezing at night, where the room was situated, there was a constant noise from the bar t the bottom of the stairs, and had easy access for children running up the stairs and making a noise,it felt like the hotel was running a cost cutting regime.

Can't fault the lady who served us breakfast, she was friendly, helpful and cheerful. Had I known that there would be live music in the bar we would not have stayed on this occasion. Other than breakfast - staff were few and far between and often carrying out several roles at once.

Als we iets vroegen aan het personeel dan kregen wij dit. Al had het fijn geweest als we het niet hadden hoeven vragen. Zoals handdoeken en wc papier. Het bed was echt verschrikkelijk. We hebben dekens uit de kast gepakt en onder de lakens gelegd. De veren kwamen nog net niet door het matras heen. De eerste dag kregen we schone handdoeken, maar verder was er niets gedaan. Geen schone kopjes of nieuw wc papier. De tweede dag kregen we helemaal niets en zijn we zelf om handdoeken gegaan. De zaterdagavond was er live muziek in het restaurant. Dit lijkt sfeervol, maar het was meer een lokale pub. Veel herrie, slaan met deuren, schreeuwende mensen. Het had fijn geweest als dit beter beschreven was. Het was alsof ons bed in de pub stond.

• Jen (5/5): Disappointing stay - not worth the price, would recommend trying other options - The staff were pretty friendly and helpful. The location is good for what we needed it for, also close to Edinburgh Very uncomfortable bed, overpriced for what you get, no breakfast, no toiletries which is pretty poor considering the price. The extraction fan in the bathroom takes ages to switch off. The light system in the bathroom means you have to keep moving which is a bit of an issue, I'll let you use your imagination there!
• David (10/5): - An older property but refurbished to a high standard. We chose this property as a means of visiting Edinburgh without he hassle of parking our vehicle in town. We took the bus into Edinburgh from Musselburgh. Very convenient.

The rooms were clean and cute, however the water in the shower was nowhere warm enough and during the first night there was a lot of noise coming from the adjacent room (every time someone opened the door next to our room it felt like they were coming into our room instead which made it difficult to sleep) although all ok the other nights

It was a bit noisy with a singer on in the bar, his volume was ok it was some of the guests who were enjoying themselves that were very loud. Breakfast was fantastic, lovely fresh hot food. Shame there was no orange juice. Will certainly recommend and stay again if the opportunity arises.

The food arrived, and we emailed in our dietary requirements. Dairy Free and Almond free. The food arrived, and the Free From options were pitiful. The dairy free option. For two children was salsa veggie rolls. (Looked like a sausage roll) tuna sandwich, coronation chicken, and something else. Went to ask the staff in the main bar. Very rude, the kitchen is closed. The dairy free options are source external. Asked if there was just bread and ham. They did bring out later, but it was ham and mayo. Asked for a portion of chips to feed my kids as they were getting hungry. The kitchen is closed. Lorraine in the bar was extremely rude. There was a lovely bar man in the function suite they gave my two kids a pot of pringles each. Can't thank him enough. The free from / vegetarian options were not touched by any of the 100+ people at the event! Went to get two soft drinks £6.90. We are not in Edinburgh city centre!!! Definitely avoid this place if you have dietary requirements.
• Stephen (10/5): - If I'm honest I didn't expect much due to the price It was almost three times cheaper than other options further out of Edinburgh The room was small but clean and bed comfortable Cosy with tea and coffee facilities Hair dryer provided and shower small again but clean and modern Bonus is the bar downstairs offering a range of drinks including Tennants and Beaver town neck oil. Best take your own travel iron but nothing else really needed Are immediately round the area isn't great but has an Aldi and Lidl within 5 mins walk. 2 miles away from Portobello beach with hip cafes and takeaways so either take a walk along there and enjoy the sunset or even take a dip. Great location for a trip to Edinburgh Just 23 min drive passing Holyrood area. Beautiful! Well worth the stay No breakfasts at the hotel. We recommend 5 mins round the block go to Company bakery on eskmills estate. Very swanky and lovely coffee.
• Rui (6/5): - This review was nearly one star. First of all, this is not a guest house - it’s a pub with a few rooms. We arrived tired after a long journey on a Saturday night and our room was directly above the pub lounge that had very loud musical entertainment. The music went on late and then we were kept awake by the pub clients’ loud singing until they were sent home. Our room was large and clean but there were some stains on the bed cover. The bathroom door was broken and the WiFi didn’t work despite entering the correct password several times. The only toiletries provided were a couple of tiny rounds of soap. No body wash or shampoo. We had breakfast on Sunday morning and the lady serving was lovely. Sunday and Monday nights were thankfully quieter. We ate at the restaurant once more for dinner and again the same lovely lady served us and the food was good. This lady is why we have awarded more stars. In summary, if you’re looking for a peaceful place to stay do not book this place on a weekend. If it’s a week day and you don’t mind not having breakfast included (they stopped serving breakfast on week days) then it’s ok, made much better by the lovely lady in the restaurant.

• maureen (6/5): - It was a last minute booking with a small discount on the price so decided to go for it. The rooms looked decent, we were coming to Musselburgh and knew the hotel was central to where we wanted to be based. Unfortunately, the hotel is more of a pub with rooms rather than a hotel. The room is very small but is clean. The bathroom is very small, the shower cubicle far too small with absolutely no space to turn or bend down to pick up soap or shampoo, with no shelf to hold soap or shampoo. So, showering was not an enjoyable or relaxing experience. Add in the power-saving bathroom light that turns off and in unless movement is detected and it just becomes really annoying. There was tea and coffee available in the room but they were of average quality. All things considered, I definitely won't be rushing back.
• Lesley (8/5): Pub with rooms. - Spacious room, good shower. Very busy pub and when we arrived it was clear they were short staffed. Bit noisy but didn’t go on too late. Breakfast is only available at the weekends, there was some confusion as I had an email telling me there was no breakfast service. I had emailed back but didn't get a reply. Having said that breakfast was good and the man serving was really friendly and helpful. The bus stop right outside is great if you want to go into Edinburgh (stop is on Princes Street.

• Eric (8/5): Topkeuze dichtbij Edinburgh - Parkeergelegenheid is gratis, maar terrein is niet groot. Personeel is heel erg vriendelijk. Prijs is heel gunstig t.o.v. het dure Edinburgh. Tip 1: de haggis bitterbal in het restaurant! Tip 2: pak de bus maar Edinburgh: goedkoop en snel. De halte ligt aan dezelfde straat. Tip 3: ga kijken bij het haventje vooral met zonsondergang! Als je aan komt rijden lijkt het meer een restaurant maar laat je niet afschrikken door het feit dat je de sleutel in de bar moet ophalen. Je hebt geen last van het geluid daar! Ontbijt serveren ze alleen in het weekend! (Maar de Lidl ligt op 300 meter)

• Lucy (8/5): - Property was lovely and clean, the room was nice and spacious, bed was lovely and comfortable. As a side note, breakfast doesn’t start until 9am, which is quite a late start for most hotels, it didn’t mention this on the Expedia booking and we didn’t see any information in the hotel or in the room regarding meal times.
• Susan (10/5): Festival - Very nice, clean,comfy just what we needed. Staff very friendly would defo stay here again .
• James (4/5): Ravelston house hotel failings - Turned up at the dining room to find no service and told they no longer provide breakfast despite advertising stating breakfast available between 8 to 11 am Our room,toilet ,shower and bed not cleaned or made up during our visit. No staff were available to explain situation.we will not be back and will not recommend to anywhone.we will use ship inn in future

• M2275VCfrankm (2/5): Very Disappointing - Went for a nice quite drink so thought the Ravelston would be a little expensive but worth it for the quality etc.What a bitter disappointment.The lounge furnishings were disgusting.The upholstery was really badly stained.The tables were very sticky and definitely not cleaned properly.What a pity as the hotel looks lovely from the outside.

• Alec (8/5): - It’s an ideal place to stay to explore Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, including Portobello, being far enough out of the city for a bit of peace and quiet. Everything you need is easily within reach. Dinner was tasty enough and the beer went down well. Staff were very friendly and there if you needed them for the most part. A fantastic price, easy to get to, I would be happy to stay here again no problem.
• L2344ZAthomass (4/5): Poor stay st Ravelston House - Poor staff and room standards not good On arrival just given key no welcome or explanation re getting back into hotel later on On arrival in room only 1 cup and saucer. Went to reception who eventually brought just a cup no saucer. Then the handle on bathroom door came off this time reception hadn't a clue all they could say can you still use the bathroom. When we arrived back after 11pm hotel all locked up. Only by luck we tried a fob. In morning no one in hotel. I have twice sent e mail but no response. Certainly would not stay again and would advise anyone to think twice
• Alan (8/5): Very good apart from no Breakfast available - Comfortable room Good choices for food and drink (Bar and Restaurant) No Breakfast and Evening meal orders had to be in by 19.45 hrs Bar music went on well after 23.00 hrs
• Carolyn (8/5): Very good - Lovely hotel, bedroom was very good and great breakfast. Staff very friendly. The hotel no.longer offers bed and breakfast but because we had booked it, they happily made it for us!
• Angelia (10/5): - The inn was lovely. The food was wonderful. The locals were friendly. Overall, I would highly recommend.
• Noreen (4/5): - I’ve stayed previously but won’t be back . No hot water for shower and unable to make a hot drink due to faulty kettle. No breakfast availability either as hotel not staffed overnight or early am. I stayed Sunday night. I know it’s a budget hotel but if it says you are able to make tea/coffee then that should be the case and hot water is not a luxury
• James (8/5): - The hotel was busy for drinks and food when we arrived to check in. Unfortunately no breakfast available. The room was massive , no noise ,and we had a great sleep. I would recommend it if you could do without breakfast. Fairly quiet at night with the bar closing at 10. We enjoyed it though and would go back.

• Sharon (8/5): Our stay in Ravelston House👍 - We had a lovely room,bit of a mix up booking in as our name was not on the list,but was easily sorted,just a wee bit attention to touch i would suggest,a few cobwebs and a dodgy bathroom handle,couple of lil holes in the lampshade next to the bed but on thw whole would certainly stay again,fabulous price for our 2 night stay,also gr8 location for regular public transport,well don to the team at Ravelston House,hope to see you all soon,and on a plus side entertainment on Saturday night was top notch,Keith Dyer was superb😄
