Guest Reviews
- Roger (8/5): - Lovely hotel Small shower
- ANN MARIE (10/5): Very good - Food is amazing all freshly cooked and good quality produce used
- Andrew (7/5): Check in immediate on arriving, Room clean with splendid views. - The breakfast was good and served promptly. The staff were courteous and efficient. The shower/toilet room extraction fan did not work which made the room unpleasant at times.
It was difficult to use the Kettle as the flex was so short. It needed some ingenious positioning on an upturned waste bin.
- John (6/5): Used to be so good I stayed regularly … but not sure I will be back - Beautiful old house. Independent. Clean. Restaurant onsite Previously very friendly but some staff didn’t even acknowledge me.
Restaurant is now expensive.
On check out wasn’t asked how my stay was.
Shower still broken over a year later.
Bed uncomfortable (uneven)
- Luba (10/5): Beautiful large rooms, comfy beds, fabulous full English breakfast! - Fabulous breakfast. Love the large rooms & deco, very clean. Beautiful building, slightly tired looking but this is expected considering the age of the property. Staff very friendly. Would definitely return next time we visit the area. Staying for only 1 night. Next time we'll stay longer
- Hazel (10/5): - Location, meals abs welcoming staff all the best we’ve encountered across our travels.
- Ronak (8/5): -
- Michael (9/5): Lovely stay at a great hotel and would return, highly recommended - Breakfast was lovely as were the staff and the room was spacious and clean. Had a lovely experience there and will definitely return. Evening meal was great too. Shower water pressure was poor so had baths but overall everything else was great
- jeff (7/5): will use consistently over other hotels in the area - Breakfast options were great and i ate it all on both days. the shower in room 12 was terrible, it's my only gripe
- John (10/5): Lovely stay as usual, lovely staff as always. - Had another lovely stay at the Greenhill Hotel. The very attentive and knowlegable staff. I think its our fifth stay at this wonderful hotel. The Shower in room 11 was to small, for a couple of heavies like our selves.
- Patricia (9/5): Excellent short break - Lovely location, exceptional staff and great food. Attended a wedding anniversary celebration and the function was excellent . Stayed overnight, comfortable room
- Julie (10/5): Overnight stay - It was great value for money, the staff were lovely and very helpful, and the food was lovely and great value for money Next time we book we will get room with a bath
- Andrew Finerty (8/5): -
- Madeley (8/5): Nice comfortable quiet hotel and the full English breakfast was delicious. - Nice varied choices on the breakfast menu. Staff very friendly. The lights around the exterior of the building made it look welcoming. Nice large room. One of the lampshades in the bedroom was peeling and looked shabby. Only enough milk for two drinks and some of the furniture looked a bit 'tired'.
- Mehmet Emre (9/5): Great hotel to stay at with family - The hotel room was impeccably clean with towels clean and we all liked the place. Facilities were nice, breakfast was good. We enjoyed it for real. Nothing. Everything was great.
- Colin (9/5): We really enjoyed our stay and happy to recommend - All the stuff were very friendly and helpful, and the food in the restaurant was very good and hearty portions l
Plenty of hot water in bathroom and lovely fluffy towels The mattress was less firm than we are used to in a hotel of this quality
The shower cubicle was very compact and might be awkward for larger clients
- Brian (10/5): A small comfortable hotel with easy access to the Lakes, the sea and the Scottish Borders - Ha that small family run feel to it. Food was excellent and big portions. Other than the bar there is no lounge area
- Shahanara (9/5): -
- Emma (9/5): Comfortable stay with great breakfast - Excellent breakfast and staff so friendly and helpful Nothing
- Emily (9/5): Stayed here as doing the Cumbrian way walk. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Great value for money. I just feel - The staff were very accommodating and it was very clean. The food was lovely and big portions Needs modernising
- Neil (9/5): Ideal short stay - Lovely building. Spacious, peaceful and quiet surroundings. Countryside views.
Friendly and helpful staff.
Good food.
Ample parking.
Pet friendly. Nothing really.
- stephen (8/5): -
- Russell (8/5): -
- Rachel (10/5): Amazing stay! - Everything was wonderful Nothing
- David (10/5): - Excellent breakfast Heating was on all the time, not able to turn off radiator.
- Emma (10/5): Great location, friendly staff and delicious food - As always a welcoming visit, staff are friendly, rooms are lovely and clean and the food is delicious Nothing, all very good
- Amy (8/5): Lovely hotel with great staff. - The staff here were really lovely! The estate cat was an added bonus!
- Andrew Finerty (7/5): Greenhill hotel - Food was excellent. Staff very helpful and freindly Room was very tired although very clean. Wardrobe facility not great if you are stopping a week bathroom was very small.
- Ian (10/5): Short stay on way to bonny scotland - Gorgeous country house hotel. Lovely bedroom....really nice and warm. Comfortable bed and great breakfast. Nothing
- Rolf (8/5): Traditional Country Hotel - Fantastic staff, welcoming, chatty & helpful.
Beautiful building, lovely location and Gizmo, the hotel cat is a stunner. Appreciate it is an old building, but the bedroom was a bit 'tired'. Shower room needs an upgrade/refurb.
Two comfy chairs and a mattress topper required, bed very firm and nowhere comfy to sit in room.
No comfy lounge to sit with a coffee & newspaper or book.
- Karen (10/5): Lovely hotel great stay - Beautiful period hotel - immaculate, lovely staff, lovely room and great breakfast I booked the wrong town I wanted to go
to Wigtown not Wigton but still enjoyed my stay in the wrong hotel in the wrong country!
- Ian (7/5): -
- SHARON (10/5): -
- David (8/5): -
- Kim (8/5): - This was a friendly and comfortable hotel with a lovely cat. We were there for a funeral so it was a sad occasion for us. Nth
- Jon (9/5): - Food was lovely. Hotel is situated in a scenic setting. All staff were so helpful and very friendly Dining room was not well lit in the evening
- Alfie (7/5): The hotel on the whole was ok, but didn’t live up to my expectations - All the staff, especially the restaurant staff were excellent and very helpful. The food was very good, and plenty of it. Although the room was spacious, the shower and the comfort of the mattress left a lot to be desired. I mentioned this to the reception staff who seemed very sympathetic to the criticism.
- Erika (9/5): Great! - Wonderful food! Hair dryer had a very short cord which made it challenging to use.
- Lin (9/5): - The hotel had fabulous views over the Solway Firth from our room and was convenient for visiting friends nearby. The only thing we found difficult was the heat of the bedroom as it was much hotter than we were used to, but that is a personal preference.
- Claire (10/5): -
- Claire (8/5): Comfortable. Good value for money. Friendly staff. - Lovely location. Friendly staff. Comfortable hotel. My Aperol spritz was expensive but below standard (little Aperol, no Prosecco)
- Katrina (10/5): - Easy to find in a peaceful location.
Hotel was clean, staff were welcoming and friendly.
Excellent value for money.
Breakfast was good.
- Catheryn Tracey (7/5): Loved the hotel and the food was great, not sure if i stay again due to the firm bed. - Great location, loved the building, history and the decor, the food was fabulous and the whole stay was good value for money. Would have loved to have sofas in the lounge and bar area for us to relax, there were table and chairs everywhere in the conservatory the bar and the restaurant. The bed in room 8 was very very firm did not sleep well at all. Shower too small and shower screen nearly falling off bathrooms need to be updated. It Would have been nice to know about the cat as some people are scared or allergic to them and I don’t think it should be allowed to roam into the restraunt when people are eating.
- Lyn (7/5): Served its purpose - We stayed here for a function Very dated shower had no pressure bathroom needs a serious makeover
- CHRIS (10/5): -
- Mark (10/5): - A proper small well run hotel. Fantastic staff and great value for money. Nothing
- Frances (8/5): - The building was lovely, well decorated and warm. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. We enjoyed our meal and a good selection of drinks. Nothing to dislike.
- SlowCoach (9/5): Lovely comfortable stay with good food! - Lovely country hotel. Nice and clean. Spacious well appointed bedrooms, some with interlocking doors for families. Good choices for evening meal and tasty. Breakfast also a great selection. This is our second visit. No complaints!
- Chris (9/5): -
- Pam (9/5): -
- Tim (9/5): Fabulous stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay again. - Great breakfast (kippers - delicious). Very friendly and welcoming staff. I find the water pressure in the rooms (shower) fairly low
- Trevor (7/5): Good really good but you need a car to get about - Traditional hotel with cooked breakfast made to order and the porridge was exceptional. Staff very helpful and friendly Hot water was a bit hit and miss and bathroom a bit cramped.
- Susan (9/5): Lovely country house stay- excellent value B and B - The staff are super helpful and friendly. The family room was spacious and clean. We enjoyed a good evening meal in the bar. Excellent cooked breakfast. Dog friendly.
- DAVID (8/5): -
- Anna (10/5): Really great - Booked because it was a convenient point to break our journey and had a restaurant with a children's menu and parking. Turned out way better than expected - friendly staff, beautiful historic building with halloween decorations, very nice food, extremely good value for money.
- Baxter (8/5): - Beautiful place The water system was a bit loud!
- John (10/5): -
- Tim (9/5): -
- Andrew (9/5): - Friendly , clean No visible area to relax
- Tobias (8/5): -
- Lee (7/5): Lovely place and staff but the room was very hot and noisy. - Lovely property and great staff with an excellent cook to order breakfast. The reason I've marked it down a bit is that the room (7) was very hot and the central heating was not adjustable at all. The weather is colder than it was but the day I stayed it was mild at about 15C and the heating was in full flow. I had to open the window which only opened a few inches. And therefore it became very noisy throughout the night. The room was over the back of the property near the bar I think and there was a fridge or a freezer running on and off all night. And then a delivery around 630am. I should have worn earplugs but tbh I didn’t expect a beautiful quiet hotel to be so noisy. The room also had a strong air freshener smell too which was over powering.
But like I said the place and staff were lovely. Just giving feedback.
- bart41 (9/5): Great place to stay - Great room quiet location fabulous food great staff and very VERY CHEAP Shower too small only problem
- Michael (8/5): -
- Susanne (8/5): Great location with friendly staff - Loved the location and views. Staff were really friendly. Loved it because it was dog friendly. We ate in the restaurant and the food was really nice. Breakfast was also good. The room was fairly spacious. For us the bed was too hard and the pillows were too flat (we are spoilt with our bed at home). The room was too hot during the night even with the window open(mid October). Even if you turn the radiator off, the big pipes that feed the radiator are still hot. The shower wasn't the best but it did the job.
- Peter (9/5): So this is our third year on a row at the Greenhill and is a perfect location for our annual visit to Carlisle and frien - The hotel is really spacious and beautifully decorated, so you never feel hemmed in.
The staff are lovely, the food was very good as usual and we will certainly be back next year!
- Steven (10/5): - Excellent food. Excellent staff and cat. Nothing springs to mind.
- Jane (8/5): Comfy stay near Wigton - Friendly, helpful staff.
Good breakfast
Nice clean linen
Peaceful ,pretty location with parking Rusty grab rail in bathroom
- Karen (8/5): - Staff are really approachable, we had issues with our room, three people sharing a room and only set up for two of us. This was resolved by taking the duvet from a spare room. We didnt book in until late afternoon. We couldnt get the new shower to work. Not sure what the issue was. Will stay at the hotel next year & find out how to use thr shower!
- Douglas (10/5): This is a beautiful, comfortable, clean hotel. The food is delicious and people kind. Thank you! - This is a beautiful, clean and comfortable property. We arrived for a late dinner and they were able to immediately accommodate us. The food was delicious as was breakfast the next morning. Exactly as pictured ,bed was comfortable and people very nice. Thank you for your hospitality, wish we could have stayed longer! cannot think of anything.
- Michelle (9/5): -
- Chris (7/5): - The room was a lovely size, I enjoyed the length of the bed and had a great nights sleep. The food was great and I enjoyed it a lot. The service was great albeit a little rushed. The bath had a crack in it which made me feel a shower was the only option. I enjoy powerful shower but it was weak, but satisfactory.
- Helen (8/5): -
- Mike (6/5): Could have been better. - Friendly staff. Bed was very poor. Worried about turning in the night and falling out of bed it was so soft and saggy at the edges. Room was hot and noisy.
- Alderton (9/5): - Lovely atmosphere. Nothing.
- Richard (10/5): - Friendly, comfortable service with an absolutely wonderful Sunday evening menu!
- Debra (7/5): -
- Clare (8/5): A pleasant 2 night stay. - Beautiful building. Great parking. Downstairs rooms were beautiful. Breakfast was great. Staff could not have been any nicer. Many, many positives.
However. Our room (6), which was a quadruple room, had a few issues.
The beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever experienced. The windows were very dirty and painted shut. The bathroom needs a complete upgrade.
Having said that - if we were in the area would we stay there again?
Absolutely. Just please get new beds!
- Chris (8/5): - Wonderful building, great staff Hen party made a lot of noise!
- Louise (7/5): - Shower not great poor water pressure
- Andrew (8/5): Good stay but definitely need a car to get anywhere. - Friendly staff, good breakfast, bar prices were good for a hotel. Shower was a bit small and you couldn’t walk down the main road it was very busy and no footpath.
- Euan (6/5): Disappointed - Nothing wrong with hotel, staff or service etc.
My issue was I booked a superior room at £120 based on the image of the shown on Hotels.com; my room was in fact the exact one noted at £92 as a standard double room. Nothing superior about it, en suite was tiny, shower was very poor.
- Paul (9/5): -
- Susan (10/5): Beautiful historic building, spacious room, good breakfast - Plenty of parking, beautiful historic house, The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable, Beautiful view of farmland, The breakfast was well presented and plentiful. Staff were helpful. Nothing to complain about. We only stayed one night on our way home from Scotland.
- Josua (9/5): -
- Ros (8/5): Great service lovely food. - Lovely country house. Bathroom was very small.
- Daynes (8/5): - Nice building, staff and food. The room was a little tired for the money. Although nice view nothing near by.
- Ian Robert (8/5): Had a great time here. It met all of our needs - The location was great giving easy access to M6 South. We had dinner at the hotel and the food was superb. Huge quantities too! Breakfast was excellent We thought the bathroom area was a bit tired.
- Morris (9/5): Brilliant hotel try to visit once a year - Stopped at greenhills before so know what to expect and just love the place so relaxed atmosphere brilliant staff so chilled
- Kirsty (7/5): We had a wonderful stay in Wigton - close to Keswick and the lakes district - Wayne and Kaye are lovely people and great hosts. Very friendly and happy to assist with anything including information of local surroundings etc. The hotel itself is a gorgeous old worlde building with lovely large rooms and high ceilings. A wonderful Gone with the Wind staircase up to the first floor bedrooms. We had a twin room with plenty of space between the two beds. Bathroom was adequate however there was definitely a plumbing issue with a terrible noise when you flushed the toilet or turned on the water. The noise was frightening to be honest and would definitely wake a sleeping partner in the middle of the night. Breakfast was amazing. Great cooking and excellent service. The dining room is gorgeous with lovely high ceilings and there is plenty of space between the tables. They have pet highland cows on the property who are gorgeous and happy to be photographed! I thought it would be better that every guest ate in the dining room rather than in the bar and the dining room. One evening we had dinner and it felt strange as we were the only people eating in the dining room with everyone else in the bar. The waitress also had to split her time running between rooms which would have been extra work.
- Adele (8/5): -
- Conor (9/5): -
- Tim (8/5): -
- Debbie (10/5): Relaxing and peaceful place to stay overnight. - Location was very peaceful. Staff very friendly. Lovely view looking out over the grounds. Breakfast was an added bonus. Nothing
- Penny (6/5): - Staff friendly. Good location for me as have family locally. Dated and mouldy bathroom. Hard bed. Dust and cobwebs in room.
- Sara (9/5): - Very helpful friendly staff.
Good size room
- Hearn (7/5): Family sleepover - Lovely building and setting. Breakfast was excellent. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Room was cramped for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Bathroom was very small with sliding door, which reduced privacy.
- Scott (8/5): -
- Helen (8/5): -
- Steph (7/5): Valve for money - Clean comfortable room Room was too hot however fan was provided but didn’t make much difference. Room was above the kitchen so a bit smelly.
Staff could have been friendly. Breakfast was very late considering we were the only ones there. Took over 3o minutes to arrive. Poor quality breakfast
- Chris (9/5): A charming, historic and characterful hotel in a tranquil setting, with friendly staff. - We really appreciated the characterful elegance of this hotel, with attractive period-style decor and furnishings throughout. The bedrooms were well-equipped and spacious, yet felt cosy. The staff were particularly helpful and friendly. The breakfast and dinner were very good. Charming views of a tranquil field of cows from our bedroom window, including Highland Cows) Many thanks for everything! Minor things - more hooks in the bathroom and somewhere to hang up towels would have been good, but over all, a lovely place to stay!
