Guest Reviews
- Thu (10/5): A beautiful, peaceful stay in a traditional Japanese house. - The property is a beautifully preserved traditional Japanese house, where every detail evokes the charm of the Showa era, blending warmth with thoughtful design. The view overlooking the zen garden was absolutely breathtaking, and the open-air onsen truly became the highlight of my entire trip. The house is quite old, so you might hear some creaking when walking down the hallway. It can be a bit noticeable if you’re sensitive to noise.
- Apolline (10/5): - One of Japan’s best ryokan ⭐️ It was perfect 💫
- Dylan (9/5): Amazing with great staff, location, facilties, etc. - It was fantastic.
Staff where really nice, and their was one commonly around that spoke perfect english.
The private, reservable, outdoor bath was stunning. Im an anxious person by nature so the public indoor bath, seperated by gender, was very overwhelming for me as they are where the showers are. But it wasnt too hard to jusy find a quiet window and suck it up.
- Carine (8/5): I recommend the place! - Lovely Ryokan with a private Rotenburo, nicely decorated interior and kind staff. Nothing, it was great
- Oliver (10/5): Perfect traditional ryokan experience in an enchanting city... - I loved my stay at Yamada Bessou Guesthouse in Beppu, a beautifully preserved traditional Japanese inn with a quaint stone garden. The architecture creates an immediate sense of calm, enhanced by the option of a private onsen, which can be booked in 30minute slots, was blissful. The guesthouse was quiet, ensuring an excellent night’s sleep. My room was equipped with a fridge, heater, kettle, towels and a dressing gown, and featured beds on a charming mezzanine. A projector allowed streaming of Netflix onto the wall which was a very cool feature. The staff were really attentive, friendly and accommodating explaining the 100year history of the inn. Its central location near shops, cafes, restaurants and the main station was ideal, and the traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious, in the tranquil dining room, making the stay truly special. I would love to return! I was generally very happy - nothing significantly negative to say!
- Elisa (10/5): - Beautiful and charming traditional japanese house, the staff was incredibly kind and friendly and the hot bath was perfect after a long day of walking
- Tomoaki (10/5): -
- Daniel (10/5): A perfect experience of Japanese hospitality - Our stay at Yamada Bessou was truly unforgettable. From the very first moment, we felt genuinely welcomed and cared for in a very special way.
The hospitality of the staff is exceptional. The tea ceremony with matcha upon arrival was a beautiful and thoughtful gesture that immediately made us feel at home and at peace. Every detail was handled with great care and warmth.
The breakfast was outstanding, prepared with great excellence and attention, and it felt like a moment to be enjoyed slowly rather than just a meal.
The outdoor onsen is absolutely beautiful. Once there, you simply do not wish to be anywhere else — it is a place to relax, disconnect and truly experience the spirit of Japan.
Yamada Bessou will always remain one of our most special memories of this trip. We are deeply grateful for such a warm and authentic experience. Honestly, there was nothing we didn’t like. If anything, we only wished we could have stayed for more nights to enjoy this wonderful place for longer.
- Venkatesh (10/5): A traditional home where you are treated like family! - Traditional design with modern conveniences and excellent staff. I was taken care like a family member. The kindness and sweet memories will last long after the trip. Thank you Mrs. Yamada! My room had shared bathroom which was very clean but outside the room
- Christopher (10/5): Charming traditional ryokan - A wonderful traditional guesthouse, with friendly staff (who gave excellent recommendations for cafes and restaurants), a nice private outside onsen, and a really delicious traditional breakfast. The room was comfortable, with a projector. We struggled to connect the projector to Netflix/YouTube (minor complaint as we were trying to get away from normal life!)
- Jade (9/5): -
- Ryan (10/5): Traditional Inn in the Heart of Beppu makes you feel at home <3 - Beautiful old inn run by 4th generation owner/original builder. The rotenburo was easy to reserve multiple times and really special. Mrs. Yamada and Kenji were the highlights of our trip! We got to see a koto performance in the inn and also a show in downtown Beppu! Kenji's recommendations made us feel at home in the city and Yamada Bessou was a great base to explore from. Couldn't recommend this traditional ryokan more! We had massages in our room as well and highly recommend! Male and female bathing areas leave a little wanting but it's easy to overlook with everything else outstanding.
Rien
- Andreas (10/5): Wonderful experience in a traditional house - Excellent place to stay, such nice staff and a very cute and traditional Onsen. A wonderful stay and the futons were extremely comfortable Only negative side would be that it was a little bit cold in the room (but we had extreme cold weather) and a heater like the one in the breakfast room would’ve helped a lot

- Lenne Liisa (10/5): Had a lovely time in the ryokan and one of the best experiences of onsen. - We liked everything, the house, the room that we stayed in, the hospitality of the staff and the breakfast. Everything was very traditional and we were glad that we could experience it. The ryokan had perfect location as well, very near to the port of Beppu and 10min walk to the Beppu Station. Nothing, everything was perfect.
- Dorothy (10/5): - Had such a lovely time at this ryokan! The location is superb and the entire property is so beautiful and perfectly maintained. We were able to use the private onsen multiple times, which was a pure joy. The staff are all absolutely wonderful and were so helpful in making our time in Beppu so much fun -- it was also fun to try out their various restaurant recommendations! Highly recommend staying here.
- Nicholas (10/5): - The house was stunning. It was exactly what you'd expect of a traditional ryokan. The staff were wonderful, always on hand to help, and their morning breakfast service was stunning. The private onsen was beautiful as well, and was bigger than we had expected.
Couldn't expect anything more. If I'm ever lucky enough to be in Beppu again, I'll be coming back.
- Sara (10/5): -
- Stewart (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jimmy (10/5): An accommodation not to miss in Beppu! - This property and its staff is top notch. It’s genuinely a great value with its old charm while still being excellently maintained. The staff (Kenji) was very fluent in English and made check in the smoothest I’ve had across my travels in Japan. He had printed recommendations for food that were all well received from my group so I felt we can trust the staff put a lot of care to these details. The outdoor private bath was a treat to reserve and they have a nice easy system for you to book a time slot. The private onsen was also great amenity if you are feeling tired from seeing the other sights. The space was large and everyone felt comfy and cozy, especially with the kotatsu. The location is less than 10 minutes walk from the station for those commuting by train. Overall I would definitely rebook here if I were to come back to Beppu. Definitely one of the highlights of my time in Beppu. N/A
- Bastien (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful Ryokan. Warm welcome. Traditional room.
- Han (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dan.pi (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel and the Amazing onsen
- Alexandre (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jiawei (10/5): Nice Ryokan to stay at. - Location was near shopping and food area, also quite near to the train station. Room was quite spacious and comfortable. Check-in process was smooth as they explained and showed us around. You can book a private onsen 30mins once per day. You get to choose the Yukata to wear! Nothing.
- Kang (10/5): Exceptional -
- Niti (10/5): Exceptional - Everything All around
- Kimberley (10/5): Exceptional - It was our first time staying at a ryokan onsen. The staff was so friendly. The property was wonderful. The breakfast was above and beyond. We were full until dinner time! The public onsens were great but the private one was amazing!
- Victor (10/5): Exceptional - The private onsen was a great way to cap the night and unwind. I didn't like that I couldn't stay longer.
- Aleksander (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful ryokan close to Beppu station or Beppu Tower. Private outdoor bath, room, and ryokan interiors were super nice. Breakfasts were tasty. Thank you!
- Panops (10/5): Got a great stay and real relaxation with full of japanese culture. - I am very appreciated the japanese welcome and japanese culture. The service is really great and warm welcome and the room is so comfortable and can touch the japanese culture. Beside, japanese style breakfast is so delicious with warm service. None.
- Rina (10/5): Beppu is a very nice place to visit and Yamada Bessou is a great place to stay! - Private outdoor onsen, the staff, the beautiful old Japanese house, large room, location…
On the day of checking out, Rumi san insisted on driving us to the train station even though she was busy! A private bathroom with a couple of chairs would make the stay perfect.
- Noa (10/5): Exceptional - It was wonderful! The staff were incredibly kind and helpful, offering great recommendations for restaurants and sand baths. The house itself was beautiful, clean, and pleasant. We truly enjoyed our stay!
- Thibault (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were so very friendly, Kenji was a pleasure to see each morning Nothing
- Matthew (10/5): Beautiful period Ryokan in great location with helpful staff and relaxing atmosphere. - The atmosphere within the period property was fantastic. Very helpful staff, and in an excellent location. The property has bikes that made exploring the city really fun. The private onsen can be booked and I used it twice, once in the evening, and once early morning before breakfast. It is beautiful Nothing - I thought it was fantastic!
- Soon (10/5): A perfect onsen getaway! - The furnishings are beautiful, and the outdoor onsen was a real privilege to use. Everything was clean and comfortable too. NA
- Mills (10/5): An Absolute Favorite! - Yamada Bessou is one of the most beautiful hotels we stayed at in Japan. The owner and the staff are absolutely wonderful and helpful. The rooms and the grounds are beautiful and the private onsen is the nicest we have seen during our month-long stay in Japan. If you are going to Beppu I would highly recommend staying here!
- Michael (10/5): Charming, traditionell Building - Great Hosts, beautiful Onsen, very good location, Great experience.
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional - This property is stunning. The room was gorgeous and very comfortable. The onsen was wonderful. The traditional breakfast in the morning was delicious and staff were extremely attentive. Would definitely stay again if we returned to Beppu. The surrounding area isn’t overly enjoyable to walk around. It was very very quiet and not many restaurants. Beppu in general was mostly underwhelming, however it was worth the visit to stay at Yamada Bessou.
- Daniel (10/5): Ryokan rich in history and character - Authentic ryokan rich in history and character. Breakfast service highly recommended.
- Lavonne (9/5): Yamada Bessou, a lovely ryokan, with a beautiful private onsen and easy access to transportation. - The outdoor private onsen is gorgeous, I wish I had stayed longer just to use it. The indoor onsen was comfortable. The room was very comfortable but you had to use a communal bathroom down the hall. The bathroom was always clean and available for use luckily but I did hear other guest needing to use it when I was in there. Not having a bathroom in the room or closer to the room. Only because I often need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and it made it inconvenient. But it is an older ryokan so it was expected that there wouldn't be a bathroom in the room.
- Ralf (10/5): Enjoyed our stay a lot and will come back for sure! - It’s a traditional Ryokan with family history in their 4th generation!
We were very lucky as we got there early and were offered the big room upstairs for a little extra money and it was our best decision as the room was just spectacular!
Breakfast is also highly recommended as it is a traditional Japanese breakfast, nicely prepared and served in a tatami style room.
The Ryokan also counts with one of the most beautiful private outdoor Onsen in a nice garden that we have seen in all of Beppu.
The owner Rumi and her staff are extremely friendly and helpful and it was a pleasure to stay at this Ryokan and we will for sure come back again! Nothing negative during our stay!
- Daniel (10/5): THE Japanese experience. - amazing Ryokan that truly gives a Japanese travel experience that every foreigner is looking for.
The rooms are great tatami style, breakfast is amazing and the reservable onsen is truly wonderful. not much
- Guy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lee (7/5): Pleasant - Good old fashion ryokan ! No ensuite facilities
- Yoni (10/5): Highly recommend, excellent value for money. - Excellent staff, very nice and helpful. The common areas are pleasant, and the room is great (tatami area, and a western-style coffee table by the window). We enjoyed the outdoor bath a lot, which is booked in slots for privacy. We loved the Japanese-style breakfast. The neighborhood surrounding the hotel isn't especially attractive.
- Marion (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect. Amazing place, great atmosphere and very clean. Helpful and friendly staff. Highly recommend the japanese breakfast.
- Arina (10/5): Great and enjoyable stay at ryokan - Love the comfort of the place. host and staff are very friendly. a great experience to stay in a 95 years old Ryokan. Kenji is very helpful as he speaks good English. if only they can extend the checkout time at 11 am will be great. Also breakfast is a bit too early for 8am.
- Carol (10/5): Exceptional - the onsen was lovely - especially the private bath. It was nice to be able to reserve times in the afternoon / evening and again in the morning. Our room was very comfortable and cozy.
the location was great - a quiet street away from the traffic but close walk to neighborhood restaurants
staff were very friendly and helpful the indoor bath area is small and a little bit worn, compared to some of the other places we have visited, but still very pleasant for a quick soak and a shower
- Andy (10/5): Best place we’ve stayed in Japan - Amazing hot springs. Great room and so friendly staff.
- Mae (7/5): A beautiful historical place - On site parking was helpful. Our host, Rumi, was most hospitable. The ryokan itself is a historical treasure with many nooks & corners to explore. Walking the corridors, i imagine they hold many stories. The outdoor private bath was un unexpected treat. Breakfast was simply excellent- rice, miso soup, grilled fish served alongside green tea/coffee and yoghurt! My favourite would have to be raw egg & nori mixed with hot rice (tamago kake gohan)… YUM! Well… neighbouring guests were rather loud. We could hear their conversations & phone notification sounds. It was part of the experience of staying in a traditional ryokan. They quieted down by bedtime!
- Jennifer (10/5): We felt so comfortable and taken care of- me will most definitely be back next time we are in Beppu! - Everything was outstanding. Staying at Yamada Bessou was like being transported back in time- everything is so thoughtful and nostalgic. We loved the private onsen, the Japanese style breakfast, even the check-in was such a lovely process. There was nothing that did not exceed our expectations. I would say the only thing that was just a tiny bit difficult was getting there- google maps tried to have us go down a one way street- just a heads up!
- Roy (10/5): Amazing Ryocan in Beppu. The design and atmosphere are beautiful. The staf was very welcoming, the rooms are specious an - Design, atmosphere, service
- Pam (10/5): Fabulous location, great staff and a beautiful environment - The 1930's Ryokan was beautiful... inside and out. The staff were fabulous. Having some English speaking staff was really helpful for us. As 2 travellers in their 70's they went out of their way to organise our breakfast in a room where we could sit on chairs... not on the floor. Breakfast was very reasonably priced and they also organised a western style breakfast for us.
- Kiran (9/5): Excellent hospitality that felt very authentic - The property is very peaceful and the building is full of character. The staff were very welcoming. The onsen was very nice, especially the private outdoor bath (reservable in 30 minute slots) was very relaxing. The cooked breakfast was very tasty and good value.
- Eric (10/5): Perfect ryokan stay! - Staff were incredibly friendly and prompt with answering questions and messages via booking.com messenger.
Accommodations were lovely, traditional style Japanese with a comfortable floor mat and bedding.
Both the public and private (through reserved time slots) saunas were incredible experience.
Breakfast was delicious and the value for what you pay is great! Highly recommend
- Georgie (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! The staff here were so lovely and attentive. The building is stunning and really boosted the experience of a traditional
- Nachanont (10/5): Homie atmosphere with very clam environment - nice location, room and facility. feel like home and very comfort N/A
- Ranu (8/5): Very good -
- Susan (9/5): Superb - This is a wonderful traditional Japanese hotel with onsens (baths). The staff were very kind and made our stay very memorable.
- Favio (10/5): Perfect spot to relax - Excellent location. The building is beautiful, well kept, and with all the required amenities. The room was spacious, and very comfortable. The private onsen was just the icing of a cake. The staff was very polite and helpful as well. I'll surely be back!
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Daniel (10/5): Perfect place to stay in Beppu - It was literally perfect. The inn is super old (from 1930) and authentic and you can enjoy the scenery of chirping cicades while sipping the ice-cold tea the staff instantly hands you when arriving before you get shown around the whole place and getting everything explained. The staff is super friendly and they always try their best to make this experience unforgettable (in which they succeeded).
The private onsen which you can book for 30 min at a time multiple times a day is very relaxing and has a nice moody scenery, especially in the evening.
There also is cheap rental of E-Bikes.
The room is very big, beautiful and clean. You get some free snacks, tasty green tea and a can of hot and cold water every day. Everything else you need is there too.
Another highlight are the traditional Yukata which you can wear whenever you want. You get one for every day.
The breakfast also was very authentic, tasty and very cheap for what you get.
The place is just a 8 min walk from the main station and close to multiple bus stops.
I can't recommend this place enough. We'll definitely come back. Nothing to write here.
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gayna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Samuel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paola (10/5): I need to come back! - Everything was great and beyond my expectations. The room was beautiful and bigger than I thought, the shared bathroom was clean and not uncomfortable to use at all. The whole house was so beautiful, the onsen was such a treat.. I wish I had stayed longer! Breakfast was delicious too! I can't find any downsides to be honest.
- Christine (9/5): Superb -
- Denaje (9/5): Superb -
- Brandon (10/5): Beautiful accom in Beppu, close to the station, would not stay else where - Beautiful well maintained property from the 1930s. Feels like you’re living in history but also at your Japanese relatives house.
Staff are so warm and friendly - like genuinely not in the mandatory customer service kind of way. I left my adapter there and they promptly notified me and sent it to me without charge !
- Kang (9/5): Superb -
- Danny (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alexandre (10/5): Exceptional - The house is exceptional and offers a unique experience, and so is the service and the staff. Would definitely come back ♥️
- Terence (9/5): It was a very comfortable stay - Very traditional I liked everything
- Beat (10/5): Amazing and relaxing - Amazing stay to relax and enjoy the calm vibe if this place. Beautiful details everywhere including the onsen and the best breakfast we had in a while. Staff super helpful and kind. Thanks Beat
- Wee (10/5): Peaceful stay in a traditional ryokan - I was essentially living in a piece of history. It is tranquil, rustic, and comfortable. The in-house hotspring was amazing after a long day of travelling. But the real gem are the staff, they were incredibly nice and helpful. Special shout out to Kenji for helping me find an item I left behind and safekeeping it till I return. I had a really good sleep there. It is difficult, if not impossible, to pick a reasonable thing that I don't like about Yamada Bessou.
- K (10/5): Exceptional - Historical Japanese house. Well preserved rustic architecture. Great breakfast. Staff were super competent and available to help.
- Alexander (9/5): Lovely ryokan experience - Incredible hospitality, beautiful old house, and an open air private onsen to enjoy. They even asked about my diet and had a vegan meal as an option. Really good traditional Japanese inn experience in an ideal part of the city. It's less than a 10 minute walk from the ocean, shopping streets, and Beppu station which is also where the buses to the "hells" hot springs and ropeway can be taken. The closest toilet to my room did not have hand soap, but there was soap and a sink in my room, so not a big issue.
- Miroslav (10/5): Exceptional - The staff is incredibly nice and friendly. Our butler learned some basic phrases in Slovak to be more kind.
The ryokan is elegant, cozy, very aesteticaly decorated, with private outside onsen and shared onsen in the bathroom.
Such an experience!! The street address is quite including the house., It is even a house rule, because of the construction of the ryokan. You can very easy to hear your snoring neighbour.
- Merry (10/5): Old world charm and elegance - We were warmly welcomed and we'll looked after throughout. The hotel radiated old fashioned charm and hospitality. The breakfast was delicious and the surroundings took us to another time. A very pleasant haven. Everything was taken care of...
- Katherine (10/5): A very friendly, warm and relaxed place to stay with a great atmosphere and warmth - The property was beautiful, very loved and cared for by the owners and staff. The staff went over and beyond at all times and were incredibly generous and helpful. The breakfast was a highlight as was the room and the view from my room. Overall an incredible experience in warm and generous hospitality. I would highly recommend staying here.
- Ryan (10/5): One Night Stay - The staff were really friendly and accommodating! The breakfast was also really good. The facility itself was very homely. The private open-air onsen was relaxing. I think 30-minute increments is just about the right amount of time to enjoy the private open-air onsen, at least for me as a solo traveler.
