Right next to the roaring, aqua river so you hear the water flow from your room and around the property. Spacious room with beds from heaven and lovely forest views. Food was delicious, lots of drinks and ice cream in lounge. Beautiful hike to Joren Falls along the river. There was nothing I didn’t like. If I had to make a suggestion maybe a bigger variety of snacks in the lounge.

This ryokan was truly such a special experience… they really thought of everything for your utmost comfort and relaxation. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this relaxed in my life! The property itself is absolutely gorgeous, and the food and drinks delicious and plentiful. The staff were so warm and welcoming, as was the overall atmosphere of the ryokan. The bath options were all incredible, the futons comfortable, the game room and lounge with fireplace are excellent touches!! I truly can’t thank the wonderful staff here enough for making our stay so relaxed and welcoming, THANK YOU and we will totally be back when we are in Japan again. N/A

Toda a estrutura do hotel é pensada para o nosso conforto, e tudo isso com a aura mágica de um edifício tradicional, é uma viagem no tempo ficar alguns dias ali, os jardins, as vistas para o rio. Chave Michelin merecida. Acredito que para nós ocidentais a café da manhã seja um ponto "negativo", pois como é o café tradicional japonês, não espere por café, pão e manteiga, e sim por peixes e arroz. Mas como tudo é feito com carinho e esmero, fica mais fácil se jogar na experiência. Um ponto que achei negativo é que o hotel aceita crianças, e se imagine descansando no Onsen com um bebê de colo chorando por perto, acho que para o padrão de hospedagem proposto, seria mais agradável ponderar se a presença de crianças não prejudica a experiência geral dos demais hóspedes. Um outro ponto de atenção para ocidentais é que os quartos são tradicionais, ou seja, não tem camas e sim tatame (tudo super confortável, pode confiar), mas como já disse basta se jogar na experiência para desfrutar de uma hospedagem magistral.

The staff was exceptional, the food was delicious, the room was very comfortable, and the hot springs were amazing. Absolutely nothing.

- Luis (10/5): Get away from it all - I just have to say wow . The property and amenities makes you jump into a cultural experience of what is an elevated Japanese onsen, It may not be for everyone but give this place a try. Just be patient with the language barrier ; bring a poker translator and also be mindful of others and their customs (there a lot of locals who go here). My suggestion is , don’t stay for more than 2 days because you’re very isolated.

It was gorgeous, with beautiful rooms (both public areas and our actual room itself). The onsen were all STUNNING and incredibly calming - I wish I could be back there again right now! The meals were beautifully executed and incredibly delicious; and the staff was so accommodating and helpful. Ochiaro was the highlight of our trip to Japan! Nothing - this place was outstanding. Every detail is meticulously planned for you to enjoy the most relaxing and mindful stay. The property itself is stunning and offers many spaces for you to relax and unwind. The food is also incredible and one of the highlights of the whole experience. I just wish we could have late checkout.

We ate amazing food, read books in the lounge, used the beautiful baths, and sipped tea That’s all. And it was so wonderful. Fully restorative. - Gh (4/5): Exceptional... until the food poisoning - Location Hot tub Ochiairo is a historic Ryokan located along the river in Izu, offering a peaceful retreat with Studio Ghibli-esque charm. The property itself is beautiful, and the hot spring-fed hot tub inside the room was my favorite feature. It can get pretty drafty (historic charm!), so bring a warm sweater. Additionally, there are two public spa spaces—one outdoor, with hot spring water, a sauna, a cold plunge and breathtaking river views. Hotel will pick you up from the train station, which makes it more convenient. Food poisoning (!!!) Lack of consideration Our stay at Ochairo was wonderful until the second night, when my partner suffered severe food poisoning just hours after dinner. It was an incredibly difficult night, and we lost a day and a half of our trip caring for him during his illness and recovery. While mistakes can happen, I was disappointed by the hotel’s response. When I discreetly informed the team, the manager was dismissive, suggesting that my partner was simply tired. Given the high cost of the stay (nearly $1000 per night during high season), I expected better hygeine and a more thoughtful response. I believe management should take such feedback seriously, especially as hygiene and handwashing are crucial to prevent incidents like this. Ochiairo is a beautiful place with great potential. However, I can't overlook the lack of accountability and empathy we experienced. For the price, the value didn’t align with the experience, especially considering the impact on our trip. - Miklos (10/5): Exceptional - From getting picked up at Shuzenji station until the ride back, everything was taken care of for us, and we felt like we were pampered throughout the stay. We had an early dinner, choosing the 5:30 service, which meant we could later enjoy the private onsen by moonlight. The other onsen baths are worth a visit, the cave bath was especially beautiful in the morning, with the sun rays piercing through the steam. Wearing the yukata felt really nice, and the sleeve pockets are so practical! Dinner and breakfast were delicious, especially the choice of sake and the rice dishes. We were very pleased by the choice of complimentary treats and drinks in the lounge, and also in the room fridge — soft drinks and mineral water only, but all very nice after a warm onsen bath!

- Danielle (10/5): - What a decadent experience in low-key, authentic Japanese style. Not a detail was spared in the gorgeous historic building and lush forest grounds. The several course meals were outstanding, served in our private dining room and the staff was beyond helpful and gracious. The multiple onsens on property were beautiful and healing, you can even reserve one for an hour of private use. To get there, board a shinkansen and get off at the train station that is about 25 minutes away from the hotel and hotel staff will meet you with a private car to pick you up. It is top notch luxury, yet you are still immersed in the culture, and it doesn't feel pretentious. Out of our 2 week Japan trip with many destinations, this was the absolute highlight....we can't wait to come back next year.

- YOKO (4/5): 誕生日の次の日自分ご褒美 - まず出迎えは普通でした。 夕ご飯の時給仕して下さった女性があまり感じが良く無く、一人旅なので更に何だか一挙につまらなく感じられました。お食事は美味しかったのに残念です。 前日誕生日だったのに……宿帳に記入しても誰も気が付かないし、別に何かして頂きたい訳ではありませんが、私が接客業を長くしていた為かお客様に対して無関心さがどうしても気になりました。 お風呂は朝入りに行くと前日の夜私が洗い場のゴミ箱に捨てたシャンプー、コンディショナーの袋がそのままでした。 老舗の宿で数日前、動画でも観て、なる程そんな昔の職人技が見られる宿なのかと期待して来たのに。況してやおもてなしで有名な宿と伺っておりましたの残念です。 女将は声をかけて下さったりしましたが…… 伊豆は退職してから年に二三度来ますがあまり宜しくなかったです。 美味しい料理と立派な繊細な昔の技法が施された建造物なのにこれではリピーターにはなれないと感じました。
