Guest Reviews
- gary (1/5): Stay as far away as possible. - The whole place was awful. If I could post pictures of the dirt and state of the shower area I would. Worst place I have stayed at in many years. Reception was awful didn’t know I was coming. Couldn’t remember my name. Poor personal hygiene. I could go on!!
- Terry (6/5): - Room was comfortable and large, compared to modern hotels, but dropped a little chilly in the evening, and it was a very interesting building. Check in at 4.00pm ? What's that all about, no one on site at all apart from other guests, breakfast at 8.00am "not served" that's when the one member of staff turned up to set out the breakfast room and then promptly disappeared so no order taken and only toast and pastries available, not good. My room was clean but as for the rest, a proper arachnids nightmare with cobwebs everywhere. Booking.com states food and drink but non available, and my last couple of gripes, the TV ... all channels were poor reception unable to watch or listen correctly and my business invoice staff member was nowhere to be found once the breakfast room was laid out. Very poor.
- Guy (5/5): -
- Andrea (2/5): -
- Christopher (1/5): Not as pictured - Looked nothing like the photos - the photos must be 10+ years old.

Zestaw do kawy i herbaty.
No había nadie, no reponían. No había servilletas, cubiertos…
- PETER (1/5): Memorable for the wrong reasons - Looks great from outside No staff no reception no breakfast no facilities
- lisa (4/5): I don’t know what to say - The property is magnificent at first glance and what a terrible shame it is now just budget rooms. You walk through amazing original wood panelled rooms and past bar and restaurants you can imagine where once bustling with life.
On the positive the towels were large and the bed comfy. Such a pity this is now In use for budget stays. It appears most of the building is not in use and left to almost ruin with a few rooms having been allocated to keep ‘ alive ‘ to bring in a quid or two. Feels a little upsetting. The one staff member we saw appears to be an overwhelmed caretaker of sorts who showed us to our room then completely disappeared. The room was okay but the shower completely cold with a very noisy macerator. There was a missing wall light with the wires left dangling .Breakfast was actually continental not cooked a consisted of bread( only one slice available and not replenished ) stale croissant, yoghurt and cereal that looked like it had been in and out the original box several times. Not even a coffee which I had decided I was gonna grab and run.
Everything feels a little unsafe, we were only there one night and witnessed a sizeable leak , out of order facilities ( not good when you’ve been travelling and who doesn’t arrive desperate for a wee ) and fire extinguishers that haven’t been checked for some time. I mean I slept o’ but it all feels like a disaster waiting to happen.
- Suki (6/5): - Room large, clean and freshly decorated.
Friendly staff. No lights above the bed; very small double, needed a mirror in the bedroom (there was a mirror in the ensuite).
- Marcia (6/5): - Friendly staff member (we only saw one) great location for what we needed. We didn't see the pool area so can't comment on that. Cheap breakfast, selection of a couple of cereals, juice, toast and pastries. No cooked options, fine for us but depends on what you are looking for. Room was clean. Hotel is very tired. The photos on booking.com make it look fresher than it is. I had read the reviews so I knew what to expect, I would have been disappointed otherwise. We only needed somewhere to sleep for one night to attend a family party nearby, so it did the job. It's not the sort of place you would book for a weekend away and plan to spend time at the hotel. We arrived at 8pm on a Saturday and didn't see a soul. No bar or anything open. The bathroom needed a good paint and descale. £88 for the night was expensive for the room we had. Maybe other rooms are in a better condition.
- Barry (8/5): - Helpful owner. Nil
- Shivon (9/5): Pretty good! - The hotel was beautiful, the area was great and the staff we met were lovely!! Thank you!! The bathroom was a little grubby around the seal and door but overall the room and bathroom was clean, just maybe a mold treatment here or there and a deep clean once a month!!
- Folland (6/5): - Very old and dated. Needs some TLC. Didn't want to use shower as so old and not nice.
Very basic breakfast cereal, toast, few pastries.
Wouldn't return or recommend
- Sarah (7/5): An interesting venue - The look of the building, character. Friendly night staff helping me in when I couldn't get my key to open the door to get into the building . Reduce of staff due to winter season.
I like a carpeted bedroom, it was wood flooring. I understand it was a dog friendly room so easy to clean might be the reason.
- Richard (8/5): - We loved the building.
- Alan (7/5): -
- Guest (8/5): -
- Nathan (4/5): Very disappointed and not what was expected or advertised. - Nice and secluded
Helpful staff member Very dated, not many things were in working order, no internet, terrible checking in process, in need of much decoration, dark in many places, breakfast, location of room plugs, not very clean in places, filthy mug, and only one member of staff who also appeared to be the handyman trying to fix everything including breakfast.
- janet (5/5): Very disappointing - Location and breakfast I emailed twice and left phone message requesting twin beds. Had no reply. We were told on arrival we had a double bed. They then provided another bed
after I requested a full refund. Room was very cold. Swimming pool sauna not available as advertised.
- Lauren (7/5): - Nice and quiet location, beautiful building and common rooms. Bedroom was redecorated and clean. Tea, milk and sugar replaced after day 1. Location was ideal. Bathroom ceiling was falling away and mouldy unfortunately. The toilet would not flush well either . Our towels were not replaced at all during our 3 night stay and I couldn’t find anyone to ask about fresh ones.
At check in there was a bit of confusion as to if we were in the right location, even though we arrived at 5pm, the check in desk was unmanned and we had to go hunting around the venue to find someone to help. The phone number displayed on the website was not working and messages via booking .com regarding early check in, that I was enquiring about in the lead up, went unanswered.
The man we spoke to was friendly and helpful once we got to check in, just overall the place has a little bit of an eerie vibe at the moment while there are still works ongoing.
It is a beautiful building though, with lots of potential with the right care. I hope it will better for future customers to enjoy soon.
- stephen (1/5): Not worth the money - Nothing The room was filthy bed was not a double. In the bathroom the shower was looking tired and the cobwebs like it hadn't been cleaned for months. Had booked for two nights but left after one as i could not spend another night there. It was also very noisy could not sleep at all
Cant realy comment on the pool or other facilities as i did not see or use them.
- Alistair (6/5): -
- Watton (1/5): Would not stay here again. - The building itself. This is a magnificent building with beautiful architecture. The wall mountings and architecture was Victorian in its design. It was run down and extremely dirty with only certain areas open. The gym and swimming pool were closed and in the dirty side of the building. The 1 x staff left at 1900hrs and locked up and I don't know what time in the morning the place was opened up as I left at 0830hrs and there was nobody around.
- Jodie (2/5): -
- Mills (4/5): -
- Maureen (5/5): Okay, the stunning property alone doesn’t make a stay worth it - Charming building, not used to its full potential (yet?)
Okay for 1 night. Swimming pool closed for a long time. The pool was the reason we booked this property in this area.
Hostel or backpacker vibes.
- Poole (10/5): Quirky, friendly, good value. - Quirky! Friendly Richard. Informal. Very accommodating.
- E5464BRhelenb (2/5): AVOID AVOID AVOID Not Fit for Purpose - AVOID AVOID AVOID
Simply AWFUL not fit for purpose
Freezing cold, Dirty, Dusty, Tired Old Saggy Soft Furnishings, Mildew, Musty, Filthy Carpets, dark panelled rooms with faded furnishings.
Reception desk not in use the scruffy guy checking me in had to go to messy dated office to use pc to obtain check in details
Toilets NOT in use!
I requested to see the allocated rooms as the welcome and environment was presenting me major alarm bells!
Bedroom was Dated, Dirty, Bed linens creased and old.
Bathroom again dated with mildew and dirty seals and broken jagged tiles visible
The scallop corner bath was dangerous with jagged tiling
NO LEISURE FACILITIES
Closed during Covid never re opened
NO FOOD
NO BREAKFAST
Probably just as well as you would not want to eat food that was prepared here!!!
The 10 minutes I spent here prior to finding an alternative was 10 minutes too much! Either they are disillusioned or have no clue about hospitality!!
This is not even the most basic level it should not be marketed as a hospitality establishment.
Please do NOT BOOK and waste your £££
- White (7/5): It is being modernized atm. Owners great and breakfast good simply and no stress! - Amazing building Nothing
- Heather (8/5): It served it’s purpose and was quiet. Staff were nice but the building is tired. - The staff were good but the property needs updating but for the money it was ok. The mould on the shower and the radiator was too hot and the thermostat didn’t work.
- Joel (8/5): -
- John (5/5): OK for a stop over but not for a holiday. - The location was fine for our purpose as we were going to a funeral nearby. It was OK for one night but not for a longer stay. Although the bedroom was warm most of the rest of the building was cold and uninviting. We didn't use the shower as it was rather unclean. Also we could not get the TV to work.
- robin (2/5): Awful - The outside of the building and the location are great, Richard on reception was very friendly and welcoming. The old fashioned wooden library was interesting and the building itself is quirky, the grounds look good but it was dark the entire time I was there. The Wi-Fi is non existent, I located the network but it was so weak nothing could be detected. Even the 4G was incredibly poor, so I couldn't access the internet to watch anything. The TV switched on eventually, after pointing the worn out buttons at all sides of the TV, but there was no reception so basically useless, just a blank menu. see pic
The door handle was bent and the door damaged as if someone had tried to force their way in to the room, see pics
The walls are paper thin. 2 other sets of guests arrived after I got the room. 1 pair adjacent to my room, the other directly above me. They came back from wherever they'd been at about midnight making a lot of noise, doors slamming, shouting etc. Then came the noise through the paper thin walls. They did what young couples do in hotel rooms, obviously greatly enjoying each others company. When I say paper thin walls I mean you can HEAR EVERYTHING through them. Why they couldn't have been put rooms at the other end of the hotel is a mystery to me. The management must be aware of how thin the walls are??
Not being able to sleep a wink I eventually packed up my belongings at 3am and drove home, (cancelling my plans for the following day.)
This place has so much potential, the shell of the building and grounds are stunning, just needs attention at every level.
- Wendy (1/5): Very disappointed the inside needs to be done up ,better staff look tidy , - From the outside looked lovely,
We went to check in the door was locked ,
Tried many times finally some one answered ,
Th be told it’s closed no one there ,check in at4.00 , i don’t under there guess staying for sure there should be some one there if u need anything bad check-in ,
We was hopping to leave our luggage there,
Like u do in most holtel ,
We was going to leave on the first night but it was to late to find anywhere else ,
Next day we checked out again there was no one around no staff just the breakfast lady, The rooms was in a bad way , our room was like a sauna there was no way we could turn down the heating it was broken,to be told this side got heating, the other side was freezing ,
We couldn’t shower cilling had cracked mold and damp, kettle cups disgusting,
My bed uncomfortable ,dirty like having been cleaned smelled awful like damp ,kept windows open all night ,
Hate the bed next to the bathroom when u open the door was not nice ,no where to hang clothes
Worst holtel I have stayed in breakfast room needs a good clean cups were dirty ,
Went to have some toast little inserts was flying around it has it was not clean ,
Leaving that place not feeling clean ,
Shame would be lovely if it’s done up,
Warn people don’t stay here ,
There much better place to stay
- Gary (9/5): Nice - A nice hotel, family room was big enough for us all. Staff was welcoming.
- gayana (8/5): Sue at the FO was very polite & kind to show me around the facility and information abt d town - Hair drier and Ironing facility including the iron box were missing. The room did not have a full length mirror.
- Thomas (6/5): -
- Brian (4/5): Lovely building that has bags of history and so much potential. - the look of the building and some of the features, breakfast. Arrival could of been better, rooms need drastic updating, no bar or restaurant , grounds need looking at from a window perspective.
- Malcolm (9/5): -
- Jayne (8/5): We’ve stayed many times it’s a great location for us and great value for money - Vegi brekkie was exceptional Greeting ?
- Jessica (10/5): Enjoyed the building and staff were friendly and very helpful - Very kooky and absolutely loved it Nothing
- Jessica (10/5): Clean beds and bathroom, very comfortable - Beautiful building inside and out. Like the fact it hasn’t been altered too much. Odd spiderwebs and dust add to the charm!
- Malcolm (9/5): A good stay, I have been to Fieldways before and would use this hotel abain - The breafast was very good, I had a single room which was good
- Philip (10/5): Very convenient - Very good and cooked to order
- Shaun (5/5): - Breakfast was good. Amazing looking building which promises lots but the reality is rather disappointing
- Premier Inn next time. Location was good for what I needed, but the rooms were not very clean and the whole hotel is very tired and in need of a lick of paint.
My room was split from a larger one with a no sound insulation wooden divide - could hear the next door guest snoring and even turning in bed, probably the same for them.
Smallest shower in the world in the largest bathroom - looks like it was a entrance hall from court yard before a bathroom. Just left the room key in the door and walked out of a side door, as the reception was all closed up and no one about to check out with. Oh well you live and learn.
- Andrew (9/5): Relaxing accommodation - Clean and tidy.
Easy to find your way around. As above
- Robin (10/5): Seeing Fieldways for the first time, was breath-taking, and everything else was too. I recommend it! - Top breakfast. Well cooked and presented meal of quality products. Good pre cooked meal selection of cereals, bread, fruit, yogurts, jams etc. Nothing I didn't like, but being an old (and beautiful) building, there was a problem with plumbing and hot water which is often the case in older buildings, so maybe something they need to know.
- Henryk (2/5): Not recommended. - Location. Peeling wallpaper, mould around the base of the shower, shower head dirty, unable to change the temperature of the shower, ie hot on hot summer day, not nice, very noisy toilet, no change of towels on multiple day stay. Microwaved scambled eggs on untoasted bread!
- Graham (1/5): Disappointed I was denied what I had paid for. Submitting a complaint and asking for a refund - It’s was a beautiful building that has a lot of potential I was denied breakfast, that I had paid for, due to the hotel having a dispute with booking.com
I was denied use of the facilities, specifically the pool and gym, which were primary reasons for booking this hotel.
- Adrian (7/5): - Staff were very friendly and helpful, the location is great. The hotel is clean and dry but needs some TLC
- Roger (8/5): Very enjoyable, and the staff work extremely hard. - Very good value for money and lovely location, such a beautiful house, and breakfast was nice and included in the price of stay.
I only hope that the house can be used again like it was pre COVID. All in all a very nice stay. It was all good, but as I said before, I wish and hope that the house could be used as it was before COVID, it was the place to be back then,
COVID has a lot to answer for......
- John (5/5): -
- Billy (10/5): Definitely stay again - Had a great time. Friendly staff. Good facilities. Enjoyed how quiet it was. Definitely stay again Was great, could do with a bit of landscaping in the outdoor area but no complaints at all!
- LOUISE FIONA (3/5): Interesting building. - The cooked breakfast was really good. Beautiful building with so much potential. Loved the gothic vibe, would be a great location for Halloween party. Lots of hot water in bathroom. Very dated, a jolly good deep clean /total renovation is desperately needed. Saniflow bathroom pump very noisy and randomly went off at various times in night. TV was super small, that didn't matter as we could get absolutely no signal. Building layout is very confusing.
- Aaron (9/5): Beautiful site! - Lovely building, beautiful area. We had a family room for two of us but it was the last room so overpaid for the two of us but as it was meant to be for four, it's a good price! Quiet and peaceful. Lovely!
Receptionist was amazing and showed us to our room. Cooked breakfast was small, not value for money, even though you had options for toast, cereal and yogurts, the price is expensive for what you receive. The cook was also the waiter and clearing tables. Tables not being reset and no option to get yourself a replacement knife and fork, as I said only the chef on. Understand it is a low operation and low costs but a few tweaks could make the experience a little better.
- Sonia (8/5): -
- Mary (7/5): -
- Mary (7/5): -
- Shaun (8/5): Very good - Room and breakfast very good, lovely old building staff friendly. However disappointed that pool wasn’t open Pool as advertised wasn’t open
- Andrew (8/5): -
- jonathan (3/5): - Location Hotel is rundown, no heating , no hot water, single room bed mattress extremely soft .
Moved to family room ,no thermostat on radiator so just hot , taps facing different directions. Paint peeling off ,mold above shower . Gutter leaking above entrance, not enough lighting by entrance at night.
- Arkadiusz (8/5): No breakfast - I was prepared for breakfast the next morning, which was included in the price, but when I got there, I was told the kitchen was closed and there would be no breakfast. I had to leave in the morning. It depended on
- Timothy (1/5): -
- Helen (3/5): Would not recommend - It’s an attractive building, from the outside. The building is in desperate need of renovation and the room, particularly the bathroom needs more than a good clean. It was worn and really dirty. I was informed I needed to try and check in by 7pm to get my key as the receptionist was finishing his shift then. On arrival I was told that although they were aware that I’d paid for breakfast for both mornings, I wouldn’t be getting any as they don’t do breakfast anymore but I was to take that up with Booking.com and not them. The leisure facilities were only available between the hours of 4pm and 7pm. After seeing the state of the bathroom, I had no desire to venture to any other facility on offer.
I didn’t expect a lot from a 2 star hotel, but for £85 a night I did expect the room and bathroom to at least be clean.
- Avalana (8/5): -
- Steven (6/5): Functional. - An interesting old building. Warm enough and a comfy bed. I needed a proper table or desk to work at. Also breakfast at 08:00 is far too late for business travellers.
- Nick (1/5): -
- Katie (9/5): We’ll be back! - Great location, fab breakfasts and easy to travel with dogs.
- Claudine (7/5): Agréable -
- Compass63217288743 (8/5): Great value for money - Great value for money. Not many grade 2 listed hotels available for such a reasonable price. Perfect location for day trips to Bath, cheddar gorge and puzzlewood.
- Nicky (9/5): Lovely - Although now in need of a lot of tlc in a lot of areas, which we noticed as we had stayed last year too. If you want a clean room with a friendly welcome and a lovely breakfast for the price this is excellent. If you expect 5 star this isn’t for you. It has some unique features and we love it there! We would choose here.
- anthony (9/5): very good - room was excellent very comfortable
- Cassandra (9/5): -
- wellard (9/5): -
- Marco (10/5): -
- Mathew (5/5): -
- Jonathan (1/5): Possibly one of the worse hotels on booking.com - The upgraded room, due to booking being different to what was actually booked. Didn't make a fuss. Just upgraded the room from twin to double, even though I booked a double. Where do you even start - entry to the hotel, no outdoor lighting, or not working. So the drive way and entry point is unclear. Check in, poorly lit outdoor area meant finding reception was a mission. Incorrect booking of room, after walking around the hotel with bags through 100 doors but free upgrade. Sauna not working, Pool not working, Very poor signage. No bar, no evening meal. Not advertised online that these services were not available.
Hotel smelt damp and unclean. Upgraded room was dirty, damp and smelt like urine.
Beds were clean but obviously 100 years old, and very lumpy. Envelopes for pillows. All the damp and such has caused paint peel, mould and plaster to come off walls and ceiling. Ripped off wall paper made for lovely addition to the 1970's décor, however shower was luke warm and the paint peel and mould hadn't escaped the bathroom. Towels felt harsh and smelt fishy.
The evening route in or out of the hotel had very little lighting, and is clearly a danger. No staff onsite after 7pm. Finding it very difficult to say anything nice at all. Breakfast was average at best, staff were rude, huffing and talking to themselves under their breath all the time. In the light of day, you can clearly see how run down the hotel is, the ground are unkept and signage is no better during the day.
- Elaine (1/5): very disappointed - i haven't received my refund yet - would not recommend this hotel - nothing the room was cold - radiator not working, - small electric heater supplied - wasn't powerful enough to heat the room
tv had no signal,
no hot water to the shower - in the evening or in the morning
rang/messaged to complain as my guy refused to stay there again - the hotel agreed to a refund - still haven't received it nearly 7 weeks later - so very expensive week as i had to pay for another hotel for him
the hotel are not even answering booking.com - who i booked with
NOT IMPRESSED - Not recommended
- Woollven (8/5): Very helpful staff. Great value for money - Good value for money, comfortable beds Bathrooms need updating
- Matt (5/5): Lovely but tired. - Great location, beautiful venue, pleasant staff, quirky surroundings. Dirty bedding, broken bed, dirty showerhead. Needs going back to basics in general upkeep and housekeeping.
- Vittorio Gatto (7/5): -
- Ian (1/5): Read the reviews, Don't be a Linda! - Not much. Staff, bedrooms, atmosphere.
No staff about on our arrival, we walked through the building calling out, ' is there anyone here'. It was like the Marie Celeste. I tried calling the hotel by phone, no joy. We saw three sets of keys on the reception desk, the pc was open and I could easily see which rooms we were in. We took the keys and left a note to this effect.
A bit later as we left the hotel for a meal, the receptionist said people often book themselves in and saw nothing wrong with the PC being left unlocked, even when we pointed out the huge GDPR breach. When someone in our party said we had walked right through the hotel and it was just as well we weren't armed intruders, the man said, You must come from London if you think like that '. How judgemental. This person was NOT guest friendly. If he is the owner god help him. If he's not the owner sack him now to prevent further damage to your business. There was no customer service here and this was backed up by other guests, yes a few at breakfast who also said the receptionist was very rude to them too.
Breakfast was ok but again the member of staff needs training on dealing with clients instead of calling across the room to speak to you!
I had read reviews and thought it's only one night, it can't be that bad, but it is!!!
We had 2 rooms - both bathrooms replacing, the beds were not stable, the curtain rail was hanging off the wall, the bathroom lock was half missing, there were cupboard handles missing. The bath was filthy, the sink looked clean but didn't feel clean, tiles around toilet missing, dirty floor, there had obviously been leaks which left stains on the floor. There was damp and mould in the bathrooms and bedrooms, and an area near reception was particularly bad. I could honestly go on.
This building could be beautiful but it is uncared for and needs a lot of money spending both inside and out to bring it up to scratch.
- Natasha (4/5): - The gentleman who check us in was very accommodating
We had english with was good The room was dirty and in desperate need of repair and too hot for my liking and we couldn't turn the heating down.
The staff at breakfast made us feel as though we were inconvienceing her as she huffed around the breakfast room.
- Richard (1/5): Offer rooms at prices that they won’t honour. - Made a legitimate booking through booking.com 3 months prior, as they were advertising at a too good to be true price. Booking was accepted and no issues raised at that time. On the day of arrival I received a message to say they couldn’t take the booking at the price paid. I replied to their message and they never followed this up.
Anyway I didn’t turn up, as couldn’t be bothered with the hassle that might have occurred at checkin and decided to just drive home after the event I attended, so cannot comment on the place, but it seems their admin and organisation is not good.
- Bethan (8/5): - The staff were very generous in allowing and organising a late check in that I hadn't pe- arranged.
The room was warm and cosy and perfectly adequate. The hotel is in serious need of a refurb. There is a funny smell in the corridors and it looks very tired.
The television in the room didn't pick up any channels.
The door to the balcony wouldn't close fully although that didn't seem to cause the room to be too cold.
- Jerry (3/5): Very dated. - Balcony door did not close, letting out heat from room.
Masticating toilet made extremely loud noises randomly throughout the night.

- Tara (1/5): - Nothing I made a complaint for a full refund
- Jenni (9/5): Pleasant stay in a lovely location - They were very accommodating for the fact we were arriving later than check in time. The chap who checked us in was very pleasant.
The following morning we had breakfast. Again staff were pleasant. Food was nice.
Our room itself was massive. We had a family room. I was expecting 2 sofa beds. If they were i couldn't tell as they were very comfortable. The decor was a bit dated but that didnt affect our stay. The cleanliness could have been a smidge better but I wouldn't say it was dirty.
- Natalja (10/5): - Very quirky, charming building. Very quiet area and house himself, even all rooms was booked. We travelled with our Samoyed dog, who is usually very unsettled in not familiar places, but even she slept well through the whole night. Warm blankets, adjusted heating, nice shower, cattle in the room with range of teas, that what we need after soaked by heavy rain in Bath. Beatiful autumn walks with a dog just crossing the road. We found a lovely Thai restaurant just 10 min from the hotel, and their was a beautiful Bradford on Avon just 10 min from the hotel. Lovely location.
We booked a hotel with breakfast and had a full English breakfast in the lovely " poet's restorant" room.
There also pool and sauna which we not experienced because our decision to stay was made on the trip and we have no swimming clothes.
Thank you to the owner. We like it and can/will recommend it to friends.
- Lee (2/5): You get what you pay for - Staff were friendly Most of the experience
