Guest Reviews
- Raidys (10/5): - Bad
- Angelia (10/5): - The rooms were clean. Beautiful view of the lake from the balcony and very private
- Jeri (10/5): - Pet friendly, not crowded, the property was beautiful!!!
- Tracy (10/5): - We had a great time as usual. First time being able to go to the beach and swimming pool. Was not able to swim due to husband just having surgery but still got to visit pool and beach. Was a great place to go while husband was recovering.
- Ruben F (10/5): - Beautiful and well preserved! Very friendly staff.
Highly recommended!
- Dennis (10/5): - Wonderful place to stay nice staff,, internet wasnt good and no cell service
- Christina (10/5): - I really liked all the different activities at the park. The cabins are wonderful!!
- robert (4/5): - Bathroom ceiling had mold in it and there's holes in the wall behind the dresser letting bugs in especially them thousand legs that sting you and bite you killed two of them in the room
- Venita (6/5): - Cabin bathroom floor was wet and slick. Not good 4 Handcapp person. Window locks in kitchen wouldn’t lock just sitting on window. AC worked great. Location was great
- Patricia (10/5): - I normally stay at Barkley Lake State Resort but decided to make the extra drive to check out the Pennyrile Golf Course. So glad we did. The lodge was just as beautiful as well as the grounds and the area in general. Will definitely return with couples for more golfing next year. The place was practically empty, not sure why because we had a wonderful stay. You'd think it would be hard to secure a room. I have NEVER seen any marketing or advertising for Pennyrile other than flyers at the park shops. Kentucky sure knows how to run a great State Park system. Kudos.
- Bethany (10/5): - Gorgeous, clean, safe, friendly, incredible amenities!
- Halbert (10/5): - We loved the view. The room was nice and cool when we arrived. We just stayed one night. The free breakfast was great! We spent some time at the pool and enjoyed it. Only wished the pool opened a little earlier. We also went to the beach and enjoyed it very much. We rented pedal boats which were affordable and lots of fun.
- Kelly (10/5): - I love this state park ! Offers alot of activities . Its alot of fun and cozy!
- Dorothea (6/5): - Pros: Beautiful wooded area. Winding road with deer. Cute set up. Reasonably priced. View of lake. Informative hand out. Non- smoking. Pet friendly. Lots of towels. Very clean. Comfy bed. Didn't use it, but the pool looked beautiful. I did not see the beach. Everything is kind of spread out. It looked like it could be a nice chill place for an extended stay. It's out of the way for one night. Lots of activities.
Cons: Slow check-in. Couldn't buy M & Ms sitting on check-in counter because the money was submitted at 9 PM. Note this is 930 and she's taking my credit card for the room. Senseless. Opened my patio door to look on the balcony and the door would not shut or latch. The woman did come to confirm that the door would not shut or latch and it stayed that way overnight. The TV and lamp are connected to a plug that is shorting out. When the TV would come on, it's nothing but fuzz. No reception. The Internet/Wi-Fi might as well be dial up. It is awful. The breakfast was unremarkable. Walking around the lodges there was someone smoking on their balcony. That was disappointing, but it did not reach my room. The trail could use some upkeep. The room had no refrigerator and no microwave. There was a black wasp. We decided to respect each other's space so that turned out ok- and probably to be expected in the woods.
Advice: the cottages are actually on the water, they would probably be a better choice than the lodges. More privacy and have direct access to the lake.
- Charles (8/5): - Nice, quiet getaway!
- Dorthea (2/5): - I got there and I didn't have a a room reserved for me. Lucky their was a room available and they matched the rate I got online. Why y'all charged me near 12.00 for what?I would like that back never seen anything on a charge from Expedia when I went online to book. And y'all failed to book me a room so I feel I should get that back. Overall stay was nice . Breakfast sucked no frig. Or microwave but overall was nice.
- Delia (10/5): - beautiful and perfect for relaxing, a place to have a good time with the family
- David (10/5): - Lodge restaurant not the best. No fridge/microwave in room. No real dining options here. Bring a big cooler for any drinks or food you need to keep cold. Pool was nice, beach was good after it opened. Staff super nice. A little dated but comfortable and peaceful. Definitely will revisit in the future.
- Michael (10/5): - The place is located overlooking the lake. It has beautiful sites. The pool was very clean. The breakfast is Continental for those wondering, they had waffles (the ones you make on the spot), a good selection of fruits, danishes, oatmeal, and coffee. The room was very clean and mine had a balcony as well. The only complaint I have is, overnight the fire alarm kept going off. I hope the manager can fix this situation, because it kept going off randomly for all the rooms in the lodge.
- Laura (2/5): - The stay was pretty awful, won't be back, spiders, roaches.. and horrible customer service ... The pool the pool was overrun by folks who admitted that they lived down the road with their kids everything I don't have a problem with children but I mean come on I paid to have this experience and it was absolutely awful got a baked potato at the restaurant had to send it back cuz it wasn't cooked it came back it still wasn't cooked but I didn't send it back again I don't want anybody spitting in my food and then this morning went for breakfast and your people that are cleaning or whatever they're like I mean screaming it wasn't like you know they were talking amongst themselves I mean I'm kind of like man I'm trying to have like this quiet breakfast and they're screaming so I went up and I I said to the desk woman you know like hey hey you know like tone it down a bit and when I checked out she was very rude she just threw my stuff to me I definitely won't be back and I will not recommend you
- Penny (10/5): - From our balcony we watched the fireflies in the evening
The view of the lake was so tranquil
We saw fish jumping , birds.
We hiked a short trail trails and walked the garden paths and grounds, all well kept
An older property with a cozy feel.
- Lori (10/5): - The views of the lake and natural surrounds were amazingly beautiful. I spend a lot of time sitting on my balcony enjoying the view of the lake which is what really earned the 5 star review. The room did need some more updates although I really appreciated the laminate floors versus carpets. The food at the lodge resteraunt was edible but could not be considered good which was a disappointment.
- Beverly (10/5): - They need more funding to make the area more beautiful
- Shelley (10/5): - The room was wonderful in the lodge nice view of the lake. The carfish and fried chicken in the restaurant wad great.
- Donald (10/5): - Good value for the money.
- Aleta (8/5): - I loved my time at Pennyrile. I only have three complaints. The rooms should have fridges and microwaves, the dining options were limited due to no chicken (I do not eat beef or pork). But the waitress was very apologetic about not having chicken. And I understood. Overall, I had a great time and will be back!!
- Rebecca (2/5): - Quiet but overall nothing. The rooms have no microwaves or refrigerators in them and they have no pop machines or no way to get snacks or anything they have no vending machines they lock the doors after 11:00 so you can't get in the lodge where they say you can use a microwave so you can't get in there to do that so basically all you have is two beds a TV and a bathroom and they will not move you when there is complaints and concerns with your neighbors I'm calling and complaining 5-10 minutes after you get here because they put you in an adjoining room with them and so they will not move you and they don't take taking that as a curiosity so basically nothing and it took me 25 minutes to check in after I was already booked online and I would not recommend staying here for $100 a night when it should be a $60 or $40 motel with no way you got to drive at least by about 10 miles out to go to the nearest store to get anything like drinks anything you better bring your own cooler to keep your stuff cold if you bring stuff but like I said there is no way to oh and as far as if you have dirty clothes you have to go down to the campground because they don't have laundry rooms here at the lodge so no no I would not recommend nobody saying I had a horrible experience
- Joanna (10/5): - I am having an event tomorrow at the lodge. Everyone is super helpful. They have provided everything I need for a successful program. I am excited to be here. Pennyrile State Park is a lovely spot in Kentucky.
- John (10/5): Fabulous stay in town for a wedding! - The facilities and the location were fabulous. While most amenities weren't open because it's still the off season, we were in town for a wedding and couldn't have picked a better place.
- Barbara (6/5): - Lovely state park but not winter friendly. I chose this lodge for the warmth of the lovely pics of lobby fireplace and lake view. I think there were only 3 other rooms rented on a Friday night. When I asked about fireplace not burning, employee at check in
told me their wood was too wet. But the next morning a different employee had started a fire.
The room was basic but very clean and had nice towels. There is a balcony looking over the lake. Rooms require outside walk to lodge. Many nice property amenities for warmer weather. Many things were “out of order.” No coffee out our whole stay. I understand there were few guests to serve but I still paid for my room with expectations. Very limited continental breakfast. We ate in dining room Friday evening and food was very tasty. Service was very friendly at dinner. Again very few guests. (6)
- Melinda (8/5): Cold winter nights stsy - Love the rooms at this resort- wish they would come and make the beds each morning- really the only issue. Rooms were clean. Staff was friendly and the view is Spectacular!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Definitely check out the beautiful lake! Stay at the lodge for easy access to all of the amenities.
- Gaby Merary (10/5): - Todo muy tranquilo y bonito
- Samantha (8/5): - We were so surprised at just how cozy and wonderful it was! Parking was a breeze. Beach and water were AMAZING. Room was super clean. Just really, really NEED a mini fridge and microwave. It's just a must, especially with stores and such a minimum of 15 minutes away. The food at the restaurant was the most bland, luke warm, unseasoned, sketchy food I may have ever had at any restaurant. It was honestly inedible and I hate that because I love comfort food and especially in a buffet option. I was at least able to eat mashed potatoes but that had to hold me over for 12 hours after a long day of swimming and sun. The breakfast was almost better. Thankfully! Other than that, we absolutely loved every moment of our stay and my daughter asked if we could please stay another night. I was impressed with the comfort and beauty we were surrounded with at the lodge and its areas just outside the building. My goodness did it feel like a wonderful step back in time when people actually interacted with one another. We played board games in the lobby areas, air hockey in the arcade. Browsed books in the library area. Sat and chatted by the windows overlooking the lake. It felt so wonderful to see my daughter put her phone down and truly appreciate her surroundings. She and I were so happy we chose to stay here as we had never been even to the beach area before. What an amazing time! We will absolutely be back! Can't wait to try it in the fall with a hot cup of apple cider in the lobby!
- Amanda (10/5): - Very nice and clean
- lisa (10/5): - Beautiful State Park. The accommodations and staff are fabulous. Wonderful clean rooms with a view of the lake. I absolutely love
this State Resort. The
food at the
restaurant was not very good but besides that the staff and hotel were great and the park is amazingly beautiful.
- Amanda (10/5): - Staff was very nice and friendly.
- Evelyn (8/5): - Peaceful area with great amenities when visiting with family. Did not realize lodge doesn't come with microwave or mini refrigerator definitely would look into cottage next time or bring cooler. The area doesn't have lots of food options so bring your own food is a must unless you're going to eat at lodge restaurant every day. Amazing trip with my sister will be back next year.
- Linsey (10/5): - Peaceful welcoming
- Diana (6/5): - We didn’t stay. They were using for storm shelter
- Herbert (8/5): - nice serenity, low key
- Rachel (10/5): - Everything was great!
- Dianne (10/5): - So nice to find this nice clean place. We were in the area for a funeral. So beautiful!
- Jeffrey (10/5): - We had Thanksgiving dinner there and the food was excellent. We want to compliment your volunteer greeter Mary Beth. The food was amazing. We will definitely come back.
- Amy M (10/5): - Will be back
- stanley (10/5): - just a real nice place to relax.
- Marilyn (10/5): Wedding Anniversary Celebrating - The weekend was beautiful. Very relaxing. We enjoyed the view from the room and slept well. We were not happy with the food. All state park food has not been good since Covid. The buffet has always been a family favorite but not this time. Staff was pleasant and eager to make our stay pleasant.
- Mary (10/5): - Beautiful area
- Brian (6/5): Wonderful view - The view was wonderful. The room was dark, quiet and great for sleep. The room is very clean, but seriously dated. No USB or refrigerator. Tiny TV by today's standards. Dining room hours were not convenient. They were open 11 - 2 somedays, 11 -3, 11-7. The exterior lighting was mostly out, leaving the walkways and parking lot very dark.
- Rebecca (10/5): Peaceful - This place is beautiful. Very serine and peaceful! Rooms are old but clean. My favorite state park area so far.
- Kimberly (8/5): Weekend getaway - The resort was clean staff was friendly. Dining area was very clean meals very affordable. Typical motel free breakfast. It would have been nice if they had mini refrigerator i room but i brought a cooler and free ice is available. Pool area very nice separate area for small children.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Acceptable not outstanding visit. - Room was clean & comfortable. Sink & tub would not drain. Maintenance came & said tub should drain after visit. It did not! My husband cleaned sink drain with coffee stirrer to get it to drain better.
Disappointed with dining room buffet. We were part of a high school reunion group. We went through line little after 5:30 & very little food left. Buffet was not replenished.
Staff was very friendly & helpful with our needs.
- Charity (10/5): - Our room was ready early, and was extremely clean.
We had a great view of the lake. The property is beautifully maintained. Other than rough weather, it was a great few days away.
- Tracy (10/5): - Very clean rooms and friendly staff! Free contenital breakfast a d lots of things to do! Cant wait to go back!
- Nancy (10/5): - Loved our lodge room over looking the lake. Peaceful and quiet. Restaurant just ok.......it closed early the day we arrived. Would of been nice to know that ahead of time but other then that, we enjoyed our stay. Played the golf course. Great deal for $30 - 18 holes with an cart.
- Cindy (10/5): - What a gem!! The grounds are beautiful! The people were so kind and friendly. Lots to do, great place for families.
- Anthony (8/5): - Beautiful wooded surroundings, very friendly staff , excellent beds .
- Karine (10/5): - All great except the food was so-so. Hush puppies were rock solid.
Room was very clean, comfortable and quiet.
- LAURA (10/5): - Room was very clean and all staff members were friendly and helpful.
- Phyllis (8/5): - Peaceful place, well maintained, clean and friendly.
- Marianne (10/5): - Just that there were a few dead bugs on the windowsills.
- Amanda (8/5): - Pennyrile is a unique property with lots to offer. The rooms were extremely clean but the staff isn’t allowed in your room while you’re there so there is no upkeep while you’re there. The property needs some updating. This place has tons of potential. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip, it was like taking a step back in time.
- Ashlee (10/5): - This place was very beautiful. I enjoyed seeing all the wildlife. The pool was enjoyable and clean. The cabins were well equipped and clean. Will definitely return.
- Damian (10/5): - This place is a hidden gem.
- Harold (10/5): - Great place to stay. Folks were friendly. Great view of the lake.
- larry (10/5): Great - Great place. Very peaceful. Friendly staff.
- Charles (10/5): - Lack of dining
- Stephanie (8/5): Nice place to stay - Comfy bed, great location, beautiful view! Only complaints are that while the room was “reserved” we almost didn’t get a room because they are “first come first serve” and we arrived around 8pm. Plan to get there early to guarantee your reservation. Also, there was no refrigerator so it wasn’t infant friendly.
- Dannie (8/5): Great get-away! - This was our first trip to Pennyrile & we were very pleased with our stay. The food was delicious, property was very clean & well-kept, & staff was very friendly. The only thing I would suggest is putting a small microwave & fridge in the rooms. We brought our own when we noticed they weren’t provided in the lodge rooms.
- Teresa (6/5): - Beautiful area
- Verified traveler (10/5): Worth driving five hours. - Once in the room I began to notice the many eco friendly features: Large dispensers of soaps, etc. in shower. Water saving toilet tank. Spray rather than constant water stream in sink. No styrofoam. No micro or frig.
The flower gardens added much pleasure. Please tell the gardener.
Hiking trails in good condition and signed. Serene surroundings.
Beautiful white sand beach with chairs and loungers.
I definitely look forward to another visit.
- Jim (10/5): Good option, nice accommodations - Very pleased with the lodge and the room. The bed was softer than I would have preferred. The room, as well as the common areas were clean and well maintained. Good choice for your travel plans.
- David (10/5): - Great family getaway. Paddle boated, putt-putted, hiked, biked, swam in lake and pool, fished, golfed, and relaxed a little…
- Maritza (10/5): - The staff was wonderful! The area was beautiful and very relaxing! Rooms were very clean and the food at the restaurant was delicious. One of our best getaways!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Rooms, restaurant, lake and beach. - My husband and stayed at the Lodge. The room was excellent, quiet and clean. Linens and towels were snow white. Food was simple but tasted great, like home cooked. We rented a pedal boat on the first day (rates are great). The cleanliness of the lake and the beach was amazing. We had a wonderful time and will come back for sure.
- Maranda (10/5): - I liked everything about the stay. We stayed at the lodge. I would only suggest mini fridges in rooms
- Mary Jean (8/5): - .
- Judith (10/5): Clean bathroom - The grounds are beautiful. This is a small thing but to me impressive. The bathroom had 4x4 tiles used 30 years ago. The grout was CLEAN and no signs of mold or mildew.
- Vicki (8/5): - None available to rent boats, paddle boards, kayaks etc from, basically one of the reason to come and have things to do with older kids
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Staff was very nice despite some of the reviews I’ve read about rude or lazy staff! Being African American we were somewhat skeptical after seeing some of the reviews but had no problems what so ever! The staff treated us nice and was very friendly!
Room view was excellent! Kids had blast at beach and pool. The other guests were friendly as well! The kids even made some friends to!
Arcade was added bonus to keep kids busy!
Tips… bring coolers, tons of snacks and grill or hot plate as there are no refrigerators or microwave in rooms. There are no elevators be prepared to carry up or down stairs.
Hubby and I bbqd which was a money saver! Cell service sucks will need to use WiFi!
Overall we will definitely be back next year!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very pretty and peaceful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice get away. What I didn’t like was the late check in and early check out. Not worth what I paid for such a short stay. Should be a later check out time to get ur money’s worth.
- Amber (10/5): Beautiful place to stay - This place is a gem! Excellent staff, the cottage we stayed in was so quiet and clean and comfortable! Beautiful stay!!
- Brent (8/5): Very Basic Hotel - Very basic Hotel, no mini refrig. no microwave, very slow wifi, bad tv reception, small tv. Large room, Very nice park with pool and beach. free continental breakfast. Nice view of the lake and very Quiet place to stay, but if you needed to use your computer for work then you would be out of luck. Extremely nice people
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property was beautiful and the grounds were well kept and clean. Dislikes would be the low water pressure in the lodge rooms and the "issuing" of towels/supplies each day. You had to ask for additional towels, toilette paper, etc. each day instead of being sent with linens for room. We were disappointed that there were no community firepits or grills for the lodge areas, only for cottages.
- SHANNON (10/5): - A great spot for a relaxing getaway
- Rhonda (10/5): - Very attractive property and friendly staff
- Roman (10/5): - Awesome. Go there!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The view from our room was amazing!! The rooms were fantastic, but definitely need mini fridges in the room..
- Chrystal (10/5): - Great place to stay. Friendly and attentive staff. Beds are kinda small for a couple to share
- Chuck (10/5): Refreshing - My stay was refreshing, the staff pleasant and the view restful. Hope to visit again later this year.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Friendly staff - Friendly staff, great scenery. Good place to relax.
- Martin (8/5): - Clean, quiet, comfortable beds, friendly staff. I'll be back.
- Jason (10/5): Beautiful area - Clean, comfy room. Helpful, friendly staff. No complaints!
- Vonna (10/5): - This place is an absolutely beautiful hidden treasure.
- Riley (8/5): - We had a lovely stay in a one bedroom cabin. If I had to pick a negative it would be the beds were not the most comfortable. I think this is expected at a state park resort and did not impact our trip.
Emma at the front desk was really helpful and friendly.
- Kenneth (10/5): - Wonderful!
- Stephen (10/5): Perfect stay - It was excellent.
- Ron (10/5): - We had a great time. Staff, lodge, beach, pool, and hiking was awesome. Had fun on the rented paddle boat around the lake. Food was good we ordered from the restaurant but ordering from there for every meal would get expensive, so I would bring some food next time and have the restaurant food a few times also. Putt putt greens are worn down and debris due to all the trees. Looking forward to going back and hopefully staying in a cottage. Thanks Pennyrile for a great time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely grounds, but beware the stairs! - I bear the responsibility for not asking for a handicap room in advance. My sister is disabled and has difficulty walking. She doesn’t require a handicap shower, but I never dreamed we would be in a room that required walking down 15 stairs and hauling our own luggage. (It’s been years since I’ve stayed in a State Park Lodge, so I just wasn’t thinking.) Thank heavens we had only one night scheduled here. That being said, the grounds are absolutely lovely and our service was good.
