We had a safe dry place to store our bikes and had a swim in the salt water pool to ease our muscles. The owner had a list of recommendations for dinner which was helpful in a season when things are often closed. Would 100% stay again if in the area.

- Timothy (10/5): A haven of style ,peace and a warm reception . - From start to finish ..from the warm welcome ..to the amaaazing room ..and an awesome breakfast ..plus the pool for cooling off during the canacule...all totally fab ! Getting beaten at Petanque by a French couple (Marie and Mark ),fellow lovers of cycling ...but it was a drubbing ..France 1 England 0 ! However ..if it was darts ???

The welcome was warm and made us feel right at home immediately. I had been a little concerned as we had windows facing the front it could be noisy, but not in the slightest - we slept well and I am very sensitive to noise. Nothing really - the parking was a little hit and miss in terms of not being right outside the house, but we never had problems finding a place nearby.

The pool was particularly welcomed as we had to walk over 1 km with our large bags from the train station due to no taxi availability. The host provided an excellent dinner recommendation and an excellent breakfast. No taxis at the rail station to transport us to the accommodation - it was a Sunday and the local cabs often are not available on a Sunday apparently.

- David (10/5): I would definitely recommend a stay at La Porte Rouge! - This is an excellent property, with spacious rooms and bathrooms. It was a delight to stay there, and the breakfast was just divine! The location is a ten minute stroll to the centre of town, where there is a huge selection of Bistros, Bars, Restaurants and food for different tastes. The Market Place is another source to investigate for lovers of food! There is nothing I can think of which would enhance our stay...!

Veronique was an attentive hostess and made us feel welcome. The breakfast was lovely: more than adequate and plenty to eat. The location was within walking distance of the historical area and we spent several hours exploring the places of interest. Nothing to dislike.
- Suzanne (10/5): A relaxing stay in a gorgeous mansion owned by a kind and intelligent host. - I stayed for 3 nights as a single, female traveler traveling by train. It took me only about 15 minutes to walk to it from the station. It also took me only about 10 minutes to walk to the old city and the medieval dungeon. The house is stunning. I believe it is a 19th century mansion. The host met me at check-in time and provided me with easy instructions for getting in and out. I was able to buy some food at a supermarket that was only about a 5 minutes walk. One night I picked up a pizza from the restaurant across the street and it was delicious. My room was on the first floor and had a lovely view of the front garden and the road (it was very quiet at night). The room had beautiful furnishings, a comfy bed, and a hot pot and a great selection of coffee and tea. The rainwater shower was fantastic. The breakfast was superb, served in a gorgeous room overlooking the back garden. Most of all, the host was so genuinely kind and helpful to me as a solo American woman traveler, that the experience was unforgettable. One of the highlights of my three week romp through the Vendee and the Loire Valley. I gave it some thought and there was nothing I didn't like. Staying there allowed me to appreciate the uniqueness of Niort as a city and the kindness and intelligence of the people who live there. I wished I had had more time to sit in the back garden. Next time I will bring my husband and a bottle of wine.
