Guest Reviews
- Cristina (10/5): Hidden gem in Ambleside - Perfect B&B in a beautiful location! A very intimate and welcoming establishment and Debbie & Paul are wonderful! Very knowledgeable about the area. It’s clear that they love their job and the area they live in! We came to Ambleside for our wedding anniversary and the extra little finishing touches made it perfect. There was nothing we didn’t like.
Everything was catered for which made our stay relaxed!
- María (10/5): A most pleasant experience at the Lake District - My wife and I spent two nights and had a most pleasant experience. Debbie and Paul were the best hosts and made us feel at home. The room was lovely, with a very nice bathroom and breakfast was delicious!
- Ryan (10/5): Wonderful, will be returning! - Location is perfect, hosts are fantastic, very comfortable rooms, with added perks of breakfast and homemade flapjacks!
- Nirupam (10/5): Absolute hidden gem! - Such a hidden gem in Ambleside! The place is very central yet away from the busy streets. Debbie and Paul are such fantastic hosts and maintain the place so very well. Everything was well thought of and immaculate.
- Andrew (10/5): - Excellent hospitality and a willingness to make our stay perfect. So thought full and friendly I highly recommend you stay here if Ambleside is your destination.
Lovely little touches like home made flapjack, free parking pass and port to end your day. The breakfast choices were perfect, with locally sourced produce and dietary requirements met with out hesitation. We will definitely recommend to family and friends. Nothing. It's a great place to stay!

- Loretta (10/5): First class… - Exceptional B&B full of character and charm in the most perfect location, it is spotlessly clean and offers some wonderful touches like homemade tiffin and a decanter of port for a nightcap. Quality bed linen, quality towels…there is nothing that Debbie and Paul haven’t thought of!
Debbie and Paul are both lovely, very warm and welcoming and informative about the local area.
Breakfast was absolutely delicious, the full Cumbrian breakfast is a must, locally sourced sausage and bacon, perfect start to the day.
Thank you so much for having us and we hope to see you again soon. Absolutely nothing, this place really is faultless and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending to anyone visiting Ambleside

- Harris (10/5): - Waterwheel Guesthouse is located in one of the most magical places in Ambleside! Our window faced the old mill above the beck. The town and amenities are all 5 minutes walk away and we could walk out of the door and onto the hills with walks that the lovely hosts Paul and Debbie provided. We had a nightmare getting to the Lakes (car breakdown and a night in Travelodge!) and Paul and Debbie were both very flexible and generous when we got there. Breakfast was also excellent! I'm sure we'll be back at some point.
- Chris (10/5): Perfect weekend break location - The breakfast was great with local products. There are loads of little touches and details that can often go unnoticed and the hospitality was phenomenal. None
- ANDREW (10/5): Lovely stay here at the wheelhouse, Paul and Debbie were great hosts in their quaint guest house. It is only three bedro - Lovely little quaint guest house, with lovely little personal touches, like the brandy in a decanter for a night cap, locally sourced/home made cake/sweet. N/A
- Moore (10/5): - Perfect location, 1 minute from everything in ambleside No complaints at all
- Will (10/5): -
- Stewart (9/5): -
- Paul (10/5): Everything we hoped for. - The cooked breakfast was spot on. The home made flapjacks etc. provided in the room were much appreciated. The car parking permit was a great addition. Debbie and Paul were very friendly hosts.
- Malcolm (10/5): On of the best guest houses ever. - Location was so convenient. The town centre was 30 metres away, but we were away from any hustle and bustle, behind the main thoroughfare.
- Victoria (10/5): - The property is beautiful, everything is so clean and tidy and has such a cozy feeling. The attention to detail in the room was wonderful, home made flapjack, biscuits and bottles of water. Debbie and Paul were so welcoming, friendly and attentive. The breakfast was really good, even better that everything was locally sourced. The toiletries in the room were wonderful, again from a local company, felt very luxurious. We had such an amazing stay and literally cannot fault a single thing. Thank you for having us and we hope that we'll be able to stay again in the future!
Cura in ogni minimo dettaglio! Super consigliato! Complimenti da Stefania e Ruggero Nulla.

Not applicable - knew what we were booking
- Mary (10/5): Stylish, Friendly, clean and comfortable - Friendly informative owners. Comfortable bed and fan for hot weather appreciated. Parking made easy with pass offered and hints to help. Breakfast well cooked and especially enjoyed fresh fruit. Some folk might find the stairs steep but for us it was fine.

Great hosts
Attn to detail.
Lovely property.
- Denis (10/5): Cosy, comfortable, clean, close to everything, and delicious breakfasts with generous hosts. 10/10! - Everything. From the way our hosts warmly greeted us and transferred our luggage to our apartment where we were happily surprised with tasty homemade flapjacks, to the generous tips on what to see and where to eat around the lakes, not to mention the divine facilities all neatly and cleanly kempt, our stay in Ambleside at the Waterwheel Guesthouse was nothing but exceptional. I didn’t want to leave. Thanks so much for making a couple of Australians feel well at home.
- Crossan (10/5): A Wonderful Holiday Experience - Debbie and Paul were the nicest hosts we've ever had - NOTHING was too much bother. The room decor and facilities were second to none. Everything was absolutely catered for especially Debbie's wonderful homemade flapjacks and complimentary port. Paul cooked a fantastic breakfast every morning. Janis and myself cannot recommend the Waterwheel highly enough and definitely will return.
Thanks so much for such a wonderful experience
David and Janis (Crossan) Nothing

The room was beautiful and totally in keeping with what you would expect in the lake district. Beautifully restored with everything you need. Paul and Debbie were the perfect hosts and we will definitely return. Absolutely nothing
- Kathryn (10/5): Wonderful stay in the middle of Ambleside - Debbie and Paul could not have done more to make sure we had a lovely time. The beds were so comfortable and there was even delicious flapjack to come back to after a big hike! Breakfast was great too! Nothing - we couldn't have asked for more!
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -

From the moment you arrive, you're greeted with a warm welcome that makes you feel right at home. The hosts (Debbie and Paul) are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and go out of their way to ensure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. The breakfasts (& tiffin) are a highlight, setting you up for a day of walking in the Lakes, with a variety of options, including fresh fruit and full English breakfast with locally sourced ingredients. - Andy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Glover (8/5): Very good - Beautiful, quaint setting, glorious old building, incredibly convenient location.
Hosts provided parking pass for a carpark that was very nearby, and helped with our luggage when we dropped it off before parking.
Hosts were very friendly and thoughtful, with lots of lovely extra touches. Due to the glorious old building the rooms aren't spacious, and the stairs to the second floor were slightly daunting.
- Kantaporn (10/5): Lovely stay in the heart of Ambleside - Literally everything

- Diana (10/5): Exceptional - Great central location, very comfortable and spacious room. Lovely hosts and great breakfast! No parking at the property itself but they provide a free parking permit for a public car park 400yds away.
- Philippa (9/5): Comfortable, convenient with excellent hosts - Very central location but quiet too.
Very characterful
Paul and Deb went out of their way to make us feel welcome, and the little extra touches and vegan treats were especially nice. The spiral staircase was a little challenging with suitcases, but otherwise the property is lovely.
An alternative vegan breakfast would have been nice eg avocado on rather than processed sausage every day
- Julian (10/5): A delightful, central base to enjoy Ambleside. - Wonderfully central, delightful guest house tucked off the main roads. Compact and cute in every way. Debbie and Paul are super friendly and helpful hosts. The rooms are appointed lovingly and no request is too much trouble. Nothing. You need to park off-site at a public car park nearby, however the guest house kindly provides a pass for the duration of your stay.
- Robyn (10/5): Absolutely gorgeous stay at the waterwheel guesthouse! Great location, beautiful room, amazing and super informative hos -
- David (9/5): A delight calm peaceful relaxed just what we needed - Everything Nothing

- Sophie (9/5): Superb - Really charming b&b. The room was perfect, spacious and comfortable and an incredible bath tub. Breakfast was great. Can’t recommend it enough! Nothing - everything was great!
- Mike (10/5): Sharon & Mikes weekend away - The room was exceptional, full of character, spotlessly clean & had a great view.
Fantastic tea tray & Debbie's home made flapjack just added to it
Paul's breakfast used quality local ingredients, this was well cooked. Additionally, there was a choice of cereal & fresh fruit salad.
Overall this was a fantastic stay. We didn't find anything that we didn't like.
- Amehra (10/5): Fantastic hosts, beautiful guesthouse in a great location - I stayed at The Waterwheel Guesthouse for 2 nights at the end of June for my partner's birthday and had a wonderful stay! Debbie and Paul were fantastic hosts and made our stay very comfortable. We arrived before check in and were provided with a parking permit that could be used in multiple car parks. The closest is on 'Rydal Road'.
We stayed on the top floor in the Deluxe Double Ensuite. We were welcomed with homemade flapjacks which were replenished daily and were delicious! There was also some port and chocolates, a wide selection of hot drinks, toiletries and bath robes provided. You have the option to leave a tote bag outside your room and tick any items that need replacing. The little extra touches really made our stay unforgettable.
The room was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. We slept very well on both nights.
Breakfast was included in our stay. This included a selection of cereal, fruit, pastries, yoghurts, fresh juice, hot drinks or an English / Veggie hot breakfast if requested. We both had the veggie breakfast, which we loved. Portion size was great and set us up for the day ahead (The beans were particularly tasty).
The location is ideal, in the heart of Ambleside with plenty of shops and cafes nearby. I highly recommend the local Thai restaurant Jintana thai (4 min walk) or if it's a special occasion 'Blue smoke on the bay' (8 min drive).
Overall I had an amazing time staying at The Waterwheel Guesthouse. It was really lovely chatting to Debbie and Paul and I honestly feel they went above and beyond to ensure our stay was memorable. They provided us with lots of useful information regarding Ambleside, the history and surrounding areas and were always willing to offer assistance.
I also have to mention that prices stay the same and don't increase over peak season including New Year :) Absolutely nothing
- Jayne (10/5): Above and beyond expectations. - The words 'Absolutely Perfect' don't actually go far enough! The location in Ambleside was fantastic, the room exquisite, (with a view of the surrounding mountains) the quality of the food exceptional and the owners were marvellous. The attention to detail in every aspect was first class: in the room, the decor was well thought out, the amount of cupboard, drawer space and mirrors were spot on, the hairdryer even had a diffuser (I have wavy hair and much to my husbands exasperation I always take my own hairdryer and diffuser with me as nowhere I've ever been to before has ever had one!) Coffee and tea facilities were above average: ground coffee bags, luxury shortbread biscuits plus delicious flapjacks in a little glass dome which were replenished every day (even though we didn't ask for them) wrapped in a little parcel with a red tie and left on our door. Lovely toiletries and bathrobes were provided in the beautiful bathroom with a roll top bath. Breakfast was delightful in the little downstairs front room: fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, toast and a full English with locally sourced sausages, bacon and eggs all cooked perfectly. There were maps and copies of local walks provided in the hallway and in advance of our arrival, we were emailed information on all the restaurants and pubs in the local vicinity. Now let me tell you about the owners: Paul and Debbie. They just couldn't do enough for you and were exceptionally welcoming. Debbie was a fountain of knowledge and when we told her our plans for the day, her tips and advice were incredibly helpful and definitely enabled us to make the most of our time in the area. The property is located in a little lane opposite the river and an old water wheel, however the local car park is just across the main road and upon our arrival Paul gave us a parking permit which not only covers this car park but others in the area which was completely unexpected and a real bonus. The only thing I can say is that I couldn't find any future availability for another stay as it appears they are fully booked so if you find any, grab it while you can!
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jackie (10/5): Would definitely stay here again - Really lovely room, very welcoming hosts. Quiet accommodation tucked away, but still convenient for getting into Ambleside. Parking permit provided, bit of a walk to the car, but to be expected when parking is so limited, not a problem for me. Breakfast was delicious. Nothing
- Michael (7/5): Nice place in a nice location that needs some further consderation to the customer and less from the - The Water Wheel is an attractive cotage located along a short "Ginnel" right in the centre of town, which despite its central location was free from any road traffic noise. The guest house advertises itself as an "adult only" hostillery with chilldren or pets allowed which was perfect for my wife and I who are both in our seventies. The estabishment is to be highly commended on its level of cleanliness throughout the premises. Free off site parking came with the booking which was another big plus for us. The bedroom, although not the biggest, was well apointed with a comfy bed and an excellent deep set chest of drawers, the bathroom was spacious and very well appointed, even though most options on where to place your own bathroom items were taken up and covered with "luxury products". 1. On returning home I checked the billing for the Water Wheel but found no reference to the steep spiral stair case which although presented my wife who suffers from asthmer a problem ascending, proved to be a greater hurdle wilst trying to decsend.
2. Although initially the breakfast room appered to be 1st class with yogurts, juice and cereals etc the cooked breakfast was very poor. Because we didnt want a full "English" with a cumberland sausage as advertised on the menu, we were presented on a white12 inch plate, 1 x rasher of bacon, Half a small grilled tomato, 1 x potato cake the size of two fifty pence pieces (which on the second morning was cut in half) and a one egg omelette cut up pretending to be scrambled egg!! The following morning we opted to try the vegeterian breakfast only to be told that we had to give 24 hrs notice!! So we tried again for a cooked breakfast this time the single "thick" slice of bacon had morphed into a single supermarket economy rasher, again no sign of a hash brown and no second slice of bacon to substitute the Cumberland sausage that we didnt want! Maybe if the meagre breakfast had been presented on a smaller plate it might have look more substantial, but I doubt it. For the following days we opted instead for the porage option which saved the day as it was very good indeed.
3. The bedroom has a "Velox" window located in the ceiling above the bed which has no curtain/blind or any system to shut out the light unless, as told by the proprietor, we would need to stand up on the bed in order to reach up to pull down the blind, we are both in our seventies!!!!! This issue needs to be given serious thought to.
4. The bath in our room was of a modern designed roll top victorian style which looks stunning, that is until you try to get into or out of the bath due to its high sides and there is nothing to grab a hold of for support except the not very strong shower rail.
- Boon (9/5): Memorable - Breakfast was excellent The bed was a bit soft
- Jack (10/5): From now on, we won't stay anywhere else other than Waterwheel Guesthouse when in Ambleside! 10/10 - Absolutely everything! The attention to detail was spectacular, down to the last little thing. From arrival to the moment you (sadly) have to leave everything is brilliant. The owners are wonderful and full of local knowledge which was very handy when it came to the best places to eat / drink (Matthew's is a must visit for food).
The location couldn't be better. Our room was immaculately clean and even the bathroom products they use are very nice quality, unlike the throw away type of things you normally get in hotels / guesthouses. The breakfast is lovely, made fresh to order along with fresh fruit + more every morning. Little things like a tipple of port and daily homemade flapjacks in the room are just a couple of the many little things that made this stay memorable. We'll definitely be staying here again when we're next in Ambleside. We really couldn't fault a single thing, which is unusual!
- Michelle (10/5): Hosts were very accommodating and friendly. Food was Delish. Room was gorgeous and had everything we needed and more. ho - Great location, very clean, loved our room Nothing

- Jane (10/5): Wonderful - Breakfast was really nice, location was excellent loved the character of the property It was perfect 10/10
- Noah (10/5): Exceptional - both debbie and paul were lovely, brilliant breakfast and really accommodating!
- Lynne (10/5): Lovely guesthouse, welcoming hosts, perfect location - A perfect location, right in the centre of Ambleside, yet tucked away from the high street with the beautiful river and waterwheel right outside the front door. Breakfast was delicious, very fresh and well cooked with plenty of choice. No parking at the guesthouse so we unpacked in a small side road and were given a parking permit for the car park over the road which was a 2 minute walk away.
Lovely touches to make our stay special, a tot of port which was appreciated after a long day walking, as well as home made tiffin to take on our walks. Décor is lovely and the whole guesthouse is immaculately clean. Nothing was too much trouble and Paul and Debbie helped us plan our walks. Will definitely stay here again when up in the Lakes for walking.
- Victoria (10/5): Lovely stay, they hosts were very attentive and the breakfast was great. - Lovely building in excellent location
- Deborah (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful old property. Paul and Debbie extremely welcoming and accommodating. Beautiful little touches like the complimentary flap jack ( delicious) and night cap of port.

- Andrew (10/5): Paul and Deb were the best hosts and we wanted for nothing. Will definitely return - Immaculate and everything we needed Nothing

- Richard (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katie (9/5): Very comfortable, great location and lovely hosts! - Wonderful hosts- couldn’t do enough for you.
Lovely little touches like permits for parking and home baked treats. Not much! Staircase was narrow and twisty which might give some a problem but staff took luggage up.
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dmcguire (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was amazing. The hotel was exactly as advertised and Debbie and Paul were the perfect hosts. Breakfast was just what we needed to set us up for a day in the hills.
The little touches made the stay one to remember and we'll definitely be back!
- Ian (9/5): Great location, great room, great hosts, great flapjacks! Highly recommend this place! - Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Water Wheel. Perfect location in the middle of Ambleside, but nicely tucked away from any noise. Debbie and Paul were wonderful hosts, and just lovely people in general! The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was lovely and the flapjacks were amazing! The attention to detail and homely touches were very much appreciated. Would highly recommend this guesthouse to others!
- Andrew (10/5): Perfect guesthouse from which to enjoy your stay in Ambleside. - Waterwheel Guesthouse is the perfect combination of a characterful, historic property that still feels modern and comfortable. Wonderfully friendly hosts and a great location make this a hidden gem worth seeking out. Oh, and the homemade flapjacks that guests receive will be the best you ever taste!! Couldn't fault it.
