Guest Reviews
- Aleksa (10/5): - lovely hosts and staff, piece of paradise, nice rooms, awesome pool, abundance of greenery
Sehr gutes Essen
Viel Liebe zum Detail
Insgesamt sehr empfehlenswert.
- Helle (10/5): Lovely place - Beautiful and peaceful surroundings.
Really friendly staff and nice atmosphere.
Delicious food at the restaurant. It is a little out of town, but we loved to relax at Hillside - and afterwards we had two nights in Luang Prabang.
- Paivi (9/5): - Holger and team took great care of us. We enjoyed the peace and quiet for four nights. Could stay more, but holiday was ending. Nature was all around with its sounds. Location was secluded, but it was exactly what we wished for. Shuttle bus took us to visit town and back. Pool was nice, enough sunbeds and water was cool. Food was well prepared and fresh. Great stay, could come back any time!

- John (10/5): A Chill Out Zone par Excellence. - This has, without doubt been one of the highlights of our SE Asia tour. This is a chill zone par excellence. We only had 4 days there and would easily have doubled our time there if vacancies allowed.
The owner, Holger is just great and he and his wife have something they should be very proud of. The staff are all outstanding and the meals they provide are prepared, cooked and presented with care and pride.
There is an aura of tranquility that makes this place very special. For us, after frantic Hanoi we couldn’t have asked for better.
We wholeheartedly recommend this fabulous location and if we should ever venture back to this part of the world we will be here without doubt. Nothing
- Adriano Sebastiano (9/5): Autentico - Il posto é meraviglioso, autentico.

- Kirsty (10/5): Relax in the Laos mountains with a herbal steam room, pool, comfy bed and warm hosts. - Loved the mountain retreat location. I was forced to slow down and relax which I don't normally do. Holga was an amazing host, picked us up from our cruise, was relaxed about check-in and payment, and provided us with useful information. the rooms are spacious and very clean, beds are comfy and the restaurant food is excellent. The pool and herbal steam room were a treat. I would have liked the bathroom attended to over our 4 night stay (mainly the bin to be emptied). Otherwise, everything was perfect.

- Alexandra (10/5): - It’s a friendly home away from home! Amazing couple of nights just outside Luang Prabang
Nulla
- Mikkel (10/5): Almost perfect in every aspect - - loved the surrounding nature, ponds, pool and architecture. Classy but at the same time casual and cosy.
- There was enough to do not to be bored, and few enough things to feel fine doing nothing and taking it slow.
- Great food from garden and no MSG
- Our kids loved that the dog assisted us at every walk outside the resort.
- nearby nature park w. zipline and waterfalls is outstanding Ok a few minor things pool tiles looked dirty and low showerhead pressure faucettsr
- Dawid (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): - Everything lovely and beautiful The road up is terrible and the times of the shuttle are not great
- Elliott (10/5): - Unforgettable location and incredibly helpful staff Nothing
- Arigot (8/5): -
- Paola (10/5): Definitely coming back! - Fabulous location, wonderful owner and staff, great breakfast- a little gem tucked away in the mountains close to Luang Prabang
Great place to stay with kids - swimming pool, poneys, lots of board games, great breakfast
... Auch das Frühstück war Top!
Vielen lieben Dank! Nix!
- Frantalová (10/5): - Nádherná oáza klidu uprostřed přírody, ideální na relax a odpočinek. Výborné jídlo v restauraci, milý personál a krásné čisté pokoje.
- Erica (9/5): - A wonderful ecolodge. Beautiful! While a bit away from the town, it was a boon. Quiet, gorgeous.
- Uche (9/5): 'Country' living in Loas - Breakfast was delicious, good portion, with some variety. Tried two different ones classic international and a "rice soup", yummy! The staff was super helpful, place doesnt house too many people so small staff but they were great, very accommodating, especially since there were only a few of us at the lodge at that time. I really enjoyed our stay. The lodge is a bit out of town so going to and from places was always a calculation. They had a van that went into town twice a day, but if not during those times then you'd have to sort it out yourself which can add up. But that is sorta on us for choosing a place removed from the city, which ended up being the thing we enjoyed the most and part of its charm.
- Anete (10/5): -
- Ieva (10/5): - Our stay at Hillside Nature Lifestyle Lodge was one of the most memorable experiences of our entire trip to Laos. The place feels like a hidden sanctuary — tucked away in the lush hills, surrounded by greenery, birdsong, and pure tranquility. It’s the perfect escape from the city noise while still being close enough to Luang Prabang.
The bungalows are simple but beautifully designed — simple yet cozy, with every detail made to blend into nature. We especially loved waking up to the sounds of the forest and having coffee on our terrace with a view of the mountains.
The staff were exceptional — warm, genuine, and always ready to help. Everything felt personal and authentic. The food at the lodge restaurant was another highlight — fresh, flavorful, and prepared with care. Special thanks to the lovely family for creating wonderful evening for me and my friends with local Lao dishes and place by the fire pit to enjoy late evening.
We also appreciated the eco-friendly mindset — natural materials, quiet atmosphere, and respect for the environment are visible everywhere. The swimming pool overlooking the hills is just breathtaking, especially during sunrise.
If you’re looking for a place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the peaceful side of Laos, this lodge is a true gem. We left feeling deeply rested and grateful — would return in a heartbeat! 💚
- Gai (10/5): Wish we could have stayed longer! - What a stunning property to relax in away from busy Luang Prabang for a few days. I wished we could have stayed longer! Kids loved the large pool and the board games and the food! Parents loved the sauna and the serenity. Very comfy beds. Great host. Very accommodating to us with weather forcing us to change plans too.
- Leigh (9/5): Gorgeous Mountain Location - Fabulous place in the mountains. Perfect to wind down and relax. Hosts were friendly and helpful. We used the car service, massage and herbal sauna, and loved it all. We had previously stayed in town, so had explored Luang Prabang and were able to relax at Hillside and enjoy the location. It’s 20 minutes from town and a rugged road. We ate dinner at the property each night and the food was fabulous. Such a lovely stay.
- Si Thu (9/5): - If you had explored Luang Prabang’s architecture and culture, here’s the place to explore the nature. Nestled in the jungle surrounding and tranquil. The owner is very friendly and informative, Khan from reception was very polite, knowledgeable and helpful. Surprisingly, they have very delicious food except the preparation takes some time. The shower head could have been stronger pressure, and if there’s a curtain or partition for shower would be better.
- Wilbert (9/5): Genoten op onze eerste stop in Laos! - Het restaurant en het personeel waren fantastisch!
- Diane (10/5): Can’t wait to return. - Hillside is one of my favorite places to stay while in Luang Prabang. I enjoy the pool, sauna and the relaxing atmosphere. They make really good food at the restaurant!! Everyone working there is always helpful.
- Diane (10/5): Beautiful, restful, peaceful, comfortable. I loved it. - the meals were excellent. The pool lovely. I had a steam bath sauna which was also great. So quiet and peaceful there. I liked everything.
- Megan (9/5): Idyllic location away from the hustle and bustle - Beautiful, remote location. Perfect for slowing down
- Alison (10/5): Superb hotel to relax and discover local villages - We stayed here for 4 nights to mainly relax having already stayed in Luang Prabang itself. It is a superb hotel. Very relaxed and yet efficient, friendly staff, delicious food including many vegetarian and vegan options. We enjoyed walking to the two local villages which are untouched by tourism and also the nature park and read books around the lovely swimming pool the rest of the time. Nothing
- David (9/5): Lovely quiet paradise outside Luang Prabang - Location - pool. Quiet and in the middle of nowhere
Very good service Everything was great
- Rien (9/5): Superb - Excellent base outside of Luang Prabang for hikes, visiting the Nahm Dong Park (great for families with kids for short hikes, swimming in the waterfalls, and other activities), and just hanging out at the nice pool, going for a herbal steam bath, playing petanque, ... Highly recommended for a Luang Prabang getaway while still being close to the city.
- Janine (10/5): Beautiful place to stay - The setting was stunning, in the hills as the name suggests. Within walking distance to villages, trails and a nature park.
The host and staff were wonderful, really helpful. A lovely friendly warm ambience has been created by Holger, the owner, which made our stay feel very homely.
I loved looking out from the restaurant balcony onto a palm fringed garden and a hilly backdrop.
- Philip (9/5): Wonderful, peaceful, relaxing setting in the middle of nature - Wonderful setting surrounded by nature Very bad road leading up to the lodge
- Facundo (10/5): Amazing 10 days to relax in nature - I loved my stay here. I highly recommend it and will def come back
The location is paradise, 360 degress nature and only 30 mins away from town. The pool area itself deserves 10 points, i never expected a steam bath in SE asia, it was perfect.
The staff has been great, always ready to help and have a little chat.
Breakfast and food options were plenty, fresh and delicious.
Room was simple but great comfort which i only used to sleep as there plenty of chilling and social areas around the property. Never needed the airconditioning, and the room was quiet except one day i had VERY noisy neighbours which is not the lodge fault. I gave 10 points, so i will be picky, the matress was a bit soft for my taste.
Honestly i cant think of anything i didnt like.
- Ilyas (8/5): Very good - Very nice place, very nice host Holger : ). He really makes you feel welcome and provides exhaustive and very exact information about the place and surroundings. It was cold, but the AC was really working as a heater (unlike at many other places in Luang Prabang), so thank you Holger for this ). The staff seem to exist independently of the guests. They just get on with their lives, mostly eating or simply idling, and one feels like an unwelcome intruder - no-one is interested in you, no-one smiles at you, they just sit in your way without paying any attention and eat or browse in their phones. Very strange feeling for an hotel. If it were a homestay, maybe, but this is not advertised as one
- Krista (9/5): Excellent place to unwind - The food and views were excellent. The staff was extremely helpful in sharing information on the National Park and various activities we could do during our stay. There are games and books to borrow in the main house. We loved the "serve yourself" water bottles and tea. It is an excellent place to go and be as active as you wish or as calm as you need. There are no shops or restaurants, so it is what you make of it. The beds were very, very hard, so be prepared for that. We were pretty sore after two nights. Also, I am an animal lover, and while the animals at the property seem well cared for, I noticed the sweet ponies were left on their own a lot and were wanting attention. One of the two dogs has a sore leg that nobody was addressing. I hope it is soon cared for.
- Michael (10/5): A great place to rest and refresh - Holger and Mr Kahn prove that staying in Laos doesn't have to mean compromises. Everything works (or, if it doesn't, it gets fixed). Really good food. We stayed just three nights, and all of us wished it could have been longer.
- Tim (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely place, beautifull surroundings, tasty food, friendly crew. Loud children playing was bit less since we came for the rest.. but thats not something hillside can do something about... was impossible to relax by the pool due that
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional - The beautiful environment , lovely staff and comfortable beds.
- Celia (8/5): A pleasant stay in a very peaceful natural environment -
- Gunnar (10/5): - A wonderful getaway, peaceful and extremly friendly. Highly recommended if you a looking for a Lao countryside experience.
- Deborah (9/5): Superb -
- Denise (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice lodge - a bit away from the hassle of the town. Great swimming pool, super breakfast, lunch and dinner. Transport is available twice a day to the town and back - recommend booking it as the road is quite bumpy towards the end. Nice nature park nearby - with waterfalls and nice hiking trails. Be aware that you are going to the jungle - if you don’t like spiders the viewpoint might not be your thing
- Raphael (9/5): Nice hotel in the nature - Nice hotel in the nature. Cool swimming pool. Close to the park.
- K (9/5): Great out of town relaxation. - Great location for a few days relaxing out of the town. Views of the mountains. Great food (note there is nowhere else nearby). Walks from there to the park (approx 1km) and longer treks to the forest. Cooking course at park is highly recommended. I recommend the hotel viewpoint walk, note it is steep so wear good footwear and deet. Hotel Staff were helpful and happy. Note this is not adult only.
- Martin (9/5): Relaxing stay in hillside resort, great food - Comfortable room, great food, great position to explore local national park and good hiking Nothing
- Madeline (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joackim (10/5): Fantastic place - Absolutely amazing! Peaceful, relaxing, beautiful nature, friendly staff. Good hikes and very very good food.
They but a lot of love into the facilities and the food! The stay were to short
- Christoph (10/5): Exceptional - Hidden Gem in the mountains
- Gemma (10/5): A quiet break in a beautiful setting. - A little paradise on the mountains just outside of Luang Prabang. Perfect for a rest after travelling for a few months. We enjoyed the swimming pool, gardens, comfortable accommodation and the food was excellent. Thank you :-) A coffee refill at breakfast would have made it perfect.
- Ingrid (10/5): Kraftort!
- Sasha (10/5): Exceptional - A place in paradise. The food was excellent, atmosphere amazing due to the nature and the silent location. Host a as very nice and the rooms were clean and incredibly comfy. Nothing
- Oyvind (10/5): Exceptional - Perfekt location. Beatiful area. Friendly and serviceminded staff.
- Jafe (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay so much- so relaxing, and the staff were amazing. Khan was an incredible host and the whole family were so sad to leave. Spending time in the National park is a must! Nothing
- Sebastian (10/5): Exceptional - Lots to do, staff and service was amazing! Always smiling, and very organised!
- Ger (9/5): Superb - We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of this hotel, the clouds moving through the nearby mountains and beautiful landscaped gardens helped us relax. The hotel staff and family who manage accommodation all welcomed and made sure we were comfortable throughout. We would recommend to any traveller and / or family wanting a balance of adventure and peace. It is close to luang prabang, however has the natural edge which can't be faked. The amenities are clean and safe and there's many places to relax aswell as many things to do which keep you occupied and curious. Our family had an excellent time at Hillside.
- Bart (10/5): Fabulous location, wonderful staff - The Location -
- Virginie (10/5): Wonderful place on nature, very Nice people and welcome and very good food, all perfect! -
- Ken (9/5): Superb and tranquille resort - Great location inmidst of the forest and mountain area outside of Luang Prabang. Very quiet (the noisiest were our kids...) and tranquille. About 20 minutes walk from the national park which is also nice with numerous waterfalls and a scent garden.
The communication with the staff (especially Holger and Mr. Khan) was excellent, they did everything to make our stay really comfortable.
Free water in different temperatures always available, so were coffee and tea. The dinner and breakfast was excellent, a combination of both local (not too spicy, "unfortunately") and Western food, the drinks were fresh and delicious.
Plenty of games and books available. The pool has a decent size and a nice big hut at the side.
The transportation to and from the hotel was also arranged and without anything to complain. It was rainy season and quite a number of mosquitos; but I would guess this is not the lodge's fault...!
Horse-/pony-riding doesn't seem to be possible any more since Covid-times.
- Matt (10/5): Great place to relax and forget the world! - Had a wonderful 3 night stay at Hillside. As mentioned in their write up, it is quite far out of town so would be best to spend some time staying in town and then some time here relaxing. Khan was wonderful and helped us with anything we needed. We tried many things on the menu and they were all amazing. The pool was a great temperature, not too cold. My outdoor massage was amazing!! There is a village 15 minutes walk up the road to gather snacks and drinks if you want to and a small adventure park with some activities. There are boardgames and cards games available to use as well as petanque and table tennis. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend this resort! So relaxing! They have wifi but it doesn't work and there is no reception. You can walk to the road to get reception if needed but we actually enjoyed it being off the grid for 3 days. It was nice to unplug.
- Lthanhthe5s (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peyret (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marc (8/5): Quiet and relaxing spot - Quiet location in the hills away from Luang Prabang. Holger was a great host with clear communication and recommendations of what to do in the area. Very relaxing experience. There is some steps and a longer walk from room to restaurant to be aware of if you have mobility challenges.
- Karena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cecilia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rien (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! Excellent food, big pool, very nice surroundings. Very helpfull staff (before & during our stay). Shuttle service from train station to hotel & to the city. Nothing!
- Juliette (7/5): Good - Food was excellent, very peaceful place to wake up, surrounded by nature. Room was clean & comfortable. Swimming pool looked nothing like the photos and was murky & uninviting. Road into town incredibly bumpy and bad for my back (4km - 25 minutes)!
- Nick (10/5): - We had a wonderful time at Hillside Lodge. It is in stunning countryside (note there is a slightly bumpy 20-30 minute drive from Luang Prabang but we found this to be an added part of the adventure) with a great pool to cool down in either after a days activity or to relax around all day.
The team are amazing and weren’t super helpful in arranging transfers and activities. Khan was an amazing host and the food on site was great as were the fruit juices - kids (and adults) loved it all.
It is a short walk (1km) to Nam Dong park where we did a Laotian cookery course, dream catcher weaving, and treetop adventures with zip lining - all highly recommended.
We loved our time here (and buddy the dog was a highlight - super chilled) and hope to be back soon.
- Gavin (7/5): Very nice and very expensive - The setting, food, pool, staff and overall ambiance. The price. I booked what I thought was a room for 27 euros for the night. On checking out I had to pay 92 euros which included 2 x 30 minute shuttle transfers at 4 US each way there and back to the city centre, an evening meal and a breakfast. Without being able to break it down exactly, I paid around 70 euros for the single occupancy night in a twin room.
I should have said something but didn’t. Since this stay I have ceased to use bookingdotcom for stays anymore as I am and have been too often disappointed either with the photos not matching the accommodation or the prices changing between viewing and booking.
As I said it was a really nice stay and just what I needed but it was still an excessively expensive night taking into account the relative costs of living in Laos.
- Cinzia (8/5): Lush jungle around - The bungalow was very simple but really clean, a little bit dark for my taste . The beds are comfortable. We had a quite night after banging on the walls at 10 pm to ask for silence by the neighbors ( ABSOLUTELY LACK OF SOUNDPROOF, YOU CAN THE NEIGHBOR HEARING BY BREATHING ) who luckily cooperated. The sounds of nature was a bless . The pool was clean, I just used it to swim and then left because 2 families with children (a bunch) were monopolizing the scene , shouting and running around in circles while the parents were occupied by themselves . So: if you are looking for a peace spot , consider that such places set in the nature unfortunately in Asia ( we are often there, traveling for months ) nowadays tend to attract families who leave their children playing like savages just because “ they are in the nature “. The dinner was yummy , opposite we found the breakfast set very poor and absolutely super expensive for the local standard (more than 5 US dollars for an omelette, 1 coffe and one baguette with butter ). From the set we chose the orange juice never make it to the table and when I asked for explanation the employee ( the one who never smiles) told me that “ they were all very busy (5 tables ) and we left ( actually after 30 minutes we had breakfast we left , yes)”. Never apologized. Breakfast starts at 8. I gently asked the previous day if we could have it 15 minutes earlier because we had to give the car back in luang at 9. The employee agreed after being reluctant for a while , let s say he is not the warmest. But the following day we only could order from 8.05 am…Prices in the menu are in US dollars (?!) . In a place that claims a self local production of vegetables , you expect usually to have lower prices then the usual , especially in a country where taxes are extremely low . The road to get to the accommodation is bumpy and super dusty ( we had a car). Nice touches like refill water and free tea .
- Inge (7/5): Good - Great location, nice pool (with bathtowels) and a good restaurant where you can eat from 8am to 8pm. (No other restaurants nearby). They grow there own vegetables and herbs, free tea whole day available from their garden.
Nice surroundings to hike. We had a great tour to the waterfalls.
Nice and friendly staff. The bungalows needs a refreshment.
And our room was very dark, I think some white paint helps a lot instead of green walls.
The most dislike is the thin wall between the neighbours (2 rooms under one roof). Absolutely no privacy because you hear everything. It looks like they are in the same room. So, for us it was a bit of a bummer because we booked Hillside for having some rest but you feel you have to walk on tiptoes for the neighbours.
I think with some changes it can be a very nice hotel.
- Bo (10/5): What a gem this is! - 12 k outside Luang Prabang up a few dusty hill roads nesteled in a green slope lies Hillside Nature Resort. And what a gem this is. Cosy cabins and a very nice restaurant with great local food and more. Add to that a laidback and relaxed atmosphere and you have the perfect settings for some days in a quiet hill retreat.
Holger and his wife runs this place with the help of polite and friendly local staffers from the nearby village. Mr Khan is really great!
So we had a wonderful time here. Will be back! Thank you Holger and all of you.
Greetings, AM and Bo
- Jessie (9/5): Superb - What a beautiful and safe haven. It was a pleasure to stay in such a lush place with a friendly, polite vibe and excellent, cheaply-priced meals made by the staff. Holger was there as a cheerful and helpful presence basically 24/7. Thank you so much Holger, Aloun (I hope I have spelt her name correctly), Khan and the rest of the team. Genuine interest and effort made towards every guest. My daughter Greta felt completely comfortable and at home lounging by the pool all day! Also we appreciated the lack of endless plastic bottles and plastic bags. Only aspect is that the walls were so thin. This was only really an issue at night when trying to sleep, or if having to get up early and not wanting to disturb the neighbours...
- Dimitri (8/5): Very good - Friendly staff, clean and beautiful scenery. Quite far from town. Bad access roads.
